2G Ram installed. Computer recognizes 1G only. Why? Can I do anything

Hi. I just installed 2 - 1G RAM sticks in my Satellite P105-S6147. They are Kingston KTT533D2 that I bought from Toshiba. When I check my system, it shows only 1G of RAM. This computer has two memory slots. The two I removed both showed 512MB, but my computer never showed 1G of memory, it always said I had 512MB. Now, even though I just installed 2G it seems to recognize only half the memory. I don't understand. Any ideas about what I can do? Thanks very much.

First thing to do is enter the bios and load Setup Defaults, then save and exit. See if it recognizes all of the memory now.
If that doesn't work you'll need to do some testing to figure this out. Turn the system off, remove one stick of ram, then see how much is recognized with just that one stick. You'll need to test EACH stick individually in each of the slots to verify that both sticks and both slots work properly.

When my computer is in safe mode can I do anything to fix a freeze-up that is happening in normal mode?

My Macbook Pro froze up while using imovie. It was completely frozen and would not respond to anything. I powered down and booted up in safe mode. That worked. I then powered down again and attempted to boot up normally. The computer would not boot up (the bar went about 40% of the way and the circle spun for a long long time). I then powered down and booted up in safe mode again. Can I do anything while in safe mode to fix the freeze that is happening in normal mode?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

HT4890 I simply want to add photos from my computer to my iPhone; why can't iCloud make it simple. Are the geeks not capable of explaining it in normal simple language?

I'm not a programmer nor am I completely illiterate. My computer gives me the message that it cannot find my pictures after I upgraded my computer to a new motherboard and CPU. The message comes from iCloud. I cannot remember how I set this up and cannot find out by using iCloud nor by looking up the info that iCloud gives me. Are they, the people who run iCloud, not aware that their info is not easy to figure out. Ordinary people like me have to use the iPhone and it is practically impossible to find out how to change the area where the pictures are stored. I looked into iTunes for the info and do not want to have to buy more music nor buy more stuff that I cannot afford.They keep sending me to their store. Now I paid for the annual download of the music from my computer but I don't want to pay again through the nose to sync my photos to my iPhone. Is that all they care about to make more money. Isn't it enough that we already paid for the phone and the annual payment to be able to get the music that we bought and stored on our computer???

All music that goes onto iphone must come from itunes.
You can only sync/manage music from one computer/itunes library at a time. If you want music from both computers, you will have to put it all on one computer, then sync.

Since installing my broadband modem & software why can't I shut down?

I have just got broadband,via a voyager 105 modem, but since installing it I have to hold down the restart button to shut down, and I get an error message on switching my mac back on that "Mac OSx shut down unexpectedly". I've tried clicking on the disconnect icon prior to shutting down but still the same thing happens. What's going on & how can I fix it? HELP!

If your using a BT voyager 105 this is a USB ADSL modem then you will experience difficulties. Unfortunately USB ADSL modems have never worked very well in OSX. USB ADSL modems require drivers to work on your mac. They have a history of being buggy and inefficient.
The only way to have a reliable ADSL experience is to replace your USB ADSL modem with an Ethernet ADSL modem/router.
An Ethernet ADSL modem does not require drivers and will work on any platform.

I plugged my iPhone 4s into a 2nd computer I own. Why can't iTunes transfer my music to my iPhone?

Plugged it into my MacBook, updated the iTunes software. But I can't transfer any of the music without syncing! I tried to drag files to the iPhone but it doesn't let me.

When I rent a movie from itunes library on my desktop it is not showing up under rented on my Apple tv? This has not happened before?. Can I rent or buy directly from Apple TV? I hope someone can answer this silly question.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can purchase or rent it direct from the Apple TV or from the computer. If you rent/purchase from the computer, it must fully download to the computer before it will show up under computers > rentals on the TV.

How do I block a website so it cannot access my computer? I am having problems with ad sites downloading ads that are so large they lag my computer so badly that I can't do anything. I need to block those sites from downloading their ads.

I enabled home sharing on my computer and iPad, but I can't access anything on home sharing. It doesn't appear on my computer or iPad, where you would be able to see the shared content.

Am I just not undestanding how it works or am I doing something wrong?

Creating ASM after installing grid infrastructure software only option

OS environment is Solaris 10 sparc (64 bit) with suncluster 3.2. Oracle version is 11.2.0.3.0... ASM configuration also..
Grid binaries (i.e. GRID_HOME) will be placed in local disk on both the nodes. Oracle Binaries (ORACLE_HOME) also will be placed in local disk on both the nodes..Oracle database only will be placed in shared storage with ASM...
My doubt is If i select "install grid infrastructure software only" option, can i create separate ASM instance on each node by using "$GRID_HOME/dbs/initSID.ora" file of each node?
Is it possible to create two ASM instance in the clustered environment since Single instance Oracle ASM is not supported with Oracle 11g release 2 as per "Oracle® Solaris Cluster Data Service for Oracle Guide"?
Please tell me the suggestion if anyone knows........

Hi,
First of all "software only installation" only places the binaries onto the local disks. This software only binaries later have to be configured either for GI Standalone Server or GI for Cluster environment. It differs in the root.sh script to be called, and in the need to use config.sh to configure the cluster environment.
So by configuring standalone server GI later, you will only have a local ASM installation.
However you will not end up with a initSID.ora file for the ASM instance, since the spfile of the ASM instance will always be placed inside the first ASM diskgroup to be configured. (the same for GI cluster, as for GI SI).
Now creating clustered ASM and SI ASM => you can only create clustered ASM for nodes which participate in the same cluster. So if you configured both nodes with clustered GI, but did not tell them to be 1 cluster, but 2, then both ASM instances will be separate. Resulting in beeing ASM1 instance on both nodes, and not able to mount the same diskgroup (consistent of the same disks) on both servers at the same time. So in the end having 2 clusteres consisting of one node each, does not really differ much from the ASM point of view, other than having ASM1 as instance name instead of +ASM (in GI SI). The difference is in the cluster stack below ASM, which simply has more processes and requirement for the clustered GI version.
And last but not least, yes you can have separate ASM instances on 2 separate nodes. If they are not part of the same cluster, the ASM instances are independent.
They are not really single instances, since they know that they are RAC ASMs, however they do not communicate with other nodes. However you may only have one ASM instance on each host (either physical or virtual host, as you can have an ASM instance in each solaris container).

Help! Why can't I erase my hard drive?

I'm trying to erase an 80GB internal hard drive that came with my MacBook. However, the erase button is completely greyed out. I have an external drive connected waiting with Leopard on it and it recognizes that so why can't I erase this thing? I don't think it's damaged because it works perfectly aside from this.

I think your problem is that you are booting from the disk you are trying to erase. If you have an external disk with Leopard, go to the startup disk preferences (under System Preferences) and choose to boot from the external disk. After installing from the external disk you should have the option to erase your internal disk.
I'm sure you know that, but I thought it worth mentioning that erasing your disk will cause your system not to be able to boot from this disk (which in many cases is the default option).

Why can't i open any previous pages

I have downloaded an installed this "new" software.
It can't open anything ... tells me that there is a newer version, sends my to the APP store and it's installed.
Awful I even went to a training because my work was all messed up and couldn't fix it, despite the tutorials which are usuaaly very easy and helpful?

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5.1 files can not be opened in Pages 5.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
