3.0 ghz prescott

last time i upgraded some parts of my system:
-cpu 3.0 prescott instead of 2.8 800 mhz 512 kb ht
-creative audigy2 zs sound card
and the problems begin, first the temp is normally at 50c even at bios, and i can't OC this cpu more than 230 fsb instead the 2.8 i can reach 250fsb
this cpu do a lot of crash and instability when playing games
when i play games such as need for speed underground, and during the game it freeze and the blue screen pop up, showing nv4.sys fault
when i did the benchmarking, using sandra 2004:
cpu 2.8 at 3.45  score is 10100 cpu    and     5090  ram
cpu 3.0 prescott at 3.45  score is 9600cpu    and     4060 ram
even the cache is lower than 2.8.
can anyone tell me what's going here???
m i screwed with this cpu
NB: i'm running bios v 2

"cpu 2.8 at 3.45 score is 10100 cpu and 5090 ram
cpu 3.0 prescott at 3.45 score is 9600cpu and 4060 ram"
well your CPU score will be lower on your 3.0 Pres because your 2.8 is OCed more at the moment and would have bigger FSB at 3.45 then your 3.0 would at 3.45.... make sense? that is why that score is the way it is.. on the other hand, your RAM is off... 5090 is about right with PC3200 at that speed, bit 4060 is WAY too low.. make sure you dont have ram underclocked (333 Mhz for instance)... i dont think that problem is your CPU, that is your RAM... 50C is a BAD idle temp, ESPECIALLY for a prescott... prescott's run cooler and LOWER vCore then northwood... 50 C on my northwood is about as high as i let it go before CPU life might start deteriorating... prescott would probably be a couple degrees celcius lower... my idle temp is 42, my max is 53 (full load) but thats ok for northwood... you need to post some other symptoms so we can all figure this out...

  • 3.0 Ghz Prescott+Mega 865+What AGP Card?

    First, sorry for my english.
This week Ill get a Mega 865 + 3.0 Ghz PRESCOTT + 160 GB SATA HD, and I think to buy a FX5900 AGP card; but it seems that prescott processors requires half height agp card... Why? energy prob? if yes, can I replace the Mega 865 original power suply?
And about the HD and his 160 GB, can I will use it until I flash the BIOS to secure the prescott support and the HD size bigger than 120 GB?
I dont want to find a comp that dont recognize CPU+HD!!!!
    All help is wellcome, thx.

Don't you wonder if people cannot press a search button ?
    A simple search on prescott 865 agp yielded  5 results among which ;
Why half size AGP card with Prescott CPU?
    Anyway
Half-height cards is probably a power issue, check around on the forum on peoples signatures to see what will work. Full height cards do work.

  • What is the reason behind not supporting 3.4 GHZ Prescott core?

I wonder why my MSI 865PE Neo2-LS (MS-6728) does not support the 3.4 GHZ Prescott core    . I thought all 865PE chipset could support 3.4 GHZ Prescott core  . My board support 3.4GHZ but Northwood core only, and you know guys how difficult to find 3.4c.
I am using now 2.8E and I feel that this processor is not enough for my Geforce 6800 GT, this card can do better with 3.4E for sure.
I managed to overclock the 2.8E up to 3.466 and it was stable, the difference in performance was clear.
My games run much faster now, but I hate to use program like Core Center to overclock,
I always prefer the BIOS to overclock my computer. After feeling the different between the 2.8 and 3.4 i decided to buy the 3.4E but i shocked when i check the  CPU support list for my board that it is not supporting 3.4 Prescott core,
not only the 3.4E also the 3.2E is not supported and all Celeron D are not supported. They wrote in the board website that the board is "Prescott Ready" and support up to 3.2 and higher speed.
MSI have boards lower class than my board and they are supporting 3.2E and 3.4E without problem and also support all Celeron D, I don't understand why my board does not support this speeds?

Your board was designed and produced before the final power requirements for Prescott cpu's were finalized.
I think that is the reason, and it may explain why MSI close the v-core option in their BIOS also.
I know that it is difficult to get an answer to my question in MSI Forum, because MSI Support should have the answer to my question, but if I send an E-mail to MSI Support all what I will get is the automatic reply only, that’s why I wrote this topic, because I know that I will find an answer that will satisfy me in this Forum.
Thanks a lot Danny, this mean if i want to change the CPU i should change the Motherboard too.
This time i will go for AMD and stop using INTEL CPU's .

  • MSI 875P Neo FIS2R + 3.4 Ghz Prescott / Northwood?

    Hello.
I looked a little around on these pages, but I couldn't find answers to my question.
I have a MSI 875P NEO FIS2R, and BIOS version 1.8. Right now I'm using a 3.0 Ghz Processor, but I would like to upgrade to a slightly faster one. Can I upgrade to either a 3.4 Ghz Prescott or a Northwood 3.4 Ghz without updating my BIOS?
I have seen so many on this forum failing to upgrade the BIOS and thus having a ruined MB
I know there used to be a schematic that showed which processors the diferent BIOS'es could handle.
-I hope someone can help me out.
Thank you in advance for your time

Thank you very much for your reply, I appreciate it.
I can see that my signature hasn't been completly updated, but now I have 2048 MB Kingston memory.
The reason I ask about the processor is, that I would like my PC to perform better in Microsoft Flightsimulator X, and they recommend a 3.6 Ghz processor or higher. But you don't think I'll notice the difference from a 3.0 Ghz to a 3.4 Ghz?
I'm definately not upgrading to just 3.2 GHz, that would be foolish as you say.
I have an additional question, if you don't mind:
I'm also upgrading my GFX to a X1950 pro. But again, Microsoft recommends a 512 MB graphics card, but do you think that I should just go for a 256 MB, or should I get the 512 MB card? Will I notice the difference?

  • Mega 865 & Pentium 4 Prescott 3.0G

    Hi all,
I'm buying a mega 865 PC, and I have it on order. But while browsing the MSI site I found that the prescott processor is not fully supported (not very clear on the site)
I cannot find if the 3.0 GHz Prescott processor is supported, can anyone tell me if it works ?
Also I found that the Prescott 2.8G is supported, however it states
"OK (Half-Size AGP Card Only)" what does this mean. I'm bying a Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro, will this fit in ?
    Thanx for any answers.
    Raymond

i think its a power thing
the half size vga cards are low end ones

  • ThinkCentre M52 (8215 D1G) CPU Upgrade - will a Pentium D 830 SL8CN (3 GHz) work?

Hello, as the title says.. Can I expect this CPU to work? Do I need something else than BIOS update -I have the latest 2EKT46A, dated 6/2/2009  (http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds000714) If not what are my other CPU options? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Well, it didn't worked The machine is M52 8215 D1G, original CPU is Pentium-4 640 3.00 GHz Prescott, stepping N0, SL7Z9The new CPU that didn't worked is Pentium D 830 3.00 GHz Smithfield, stepping B0, SL8CN In the specs here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd006096Pentium D 830 is listed as a supported CPU I am using the latest BIOS from here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd006096The changelog  mentions added support to stepping D0 CPUs - does that means that all up to D0 aresupported, or only D0? Also here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd000810 both Smithfield and Presler Pentium D arelisted as supported.. Somewhere I've found that only 8215 CTO types are with Pentium D. Mine is 8215 D1G..Is that a hardware difference or just different peripheral equipment? And last - in the BIOS update I noticed an option to change the machine type and serial number - will thatenables the Pentium D to work if I change the machine type from D1G to CTO or I will brick it? Many questions, some answered myself.. but If anyone have experience and knowledge - please share.. Thanks

  • PT880 w/ 3.0E GHz won't start up

This is the first computer I have ever built and I ran into a problem while trying to boot up my P4 3.0E Ghz (Prescott) and PT880 mobo. When I power on my computer, the fans start going but nothing shows up on my monitor. I've reseated and checked EVERYTHING but I still can't get it to do anything when I press the button. I've read that the only way to get around this is to install a Northwood core processor and then flash the bios. Is this the only way?
I have an Enermax PSU and its rated 26A for the 12V connection if you're wondering. Thanks in advance.

Yes, I can reach the bios by pressing del key. You can do a force flash without rearch bios by using bios recovery method. You need copy the 1.7 version to a floppy disk, I think you should rename bios file to something i forgot. You can check msi website for details.
I think I found it on their website.  Thanks!  So did you have the same problem of nothing coming up on the monitor when you installed your Prescot chip?  Some other people are telling me that the motherboard is bad if you do not have anything come up on the screen if the CPU is good.  Is this just a MSI problem?
You should got something on the screen if the combo is functional. My first post read cpu as 2.8G instead of 3.2G. If nothing pop up, maybe you got a bad mobo. what d-bracket signal you got after you start?

  • Pt880 Prescott problem :(

Hi there, now i will present my problem for you...
First some info of my comp:
    PSU Chieftec Model: HPC-340-201 ATX12V
    +5V / 30A
    +12V / 15A
    +3,3V / 28A
    -5V / 0,5A
    -12V / 1A
    -5VSB / 2A
    Motherboard: Msi PT880 Neo-LSR (601-7008-020)
    CPU: Intel Pentium 4,  2,8E Ghz Prescott 1,4V max, 800Mhz System Bus, 1MB L2-Cache, PGA-478
    Ram: 4x512MB TWINMOS PC3200/400Mhz DDR CL2,5
    Graphics: Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro 128Mb DDR, 256Bit
    IDE Drives and CD Roms:
    Primary Master: NEC DVD+/-RW 8X ND2500A
Primary Slave: Segate Barracuda 80Gb 8Mb Cache
Fans:CpuFan (The one included with the prescott) Only one 80x80 Chassi fan 3pins 15db everflow
I have 2 more 200Gb hdd's also but i havent put them in yet
    Now to my problem
First some notes: I get to the screen where i can choose setup, bootmenu, networkboot, and flash recovery, but when choosing one of the options it hangs
As i said   the system boots up normally untill it wants to boot up from the cd/floppy, i have tried to boot from floppy, cd, and even another harddrive with a windows 2kpro already installed with no sucsess, so i cant even flash the bios since the comp hangs right before it wants to read the floppy with the new bios drives on it :( I read in the forum where everyone tells people who has the same problem that they should buy a new PSU, Is this the right way? Or is there another solution to the problem?  A new PSU or another motherboard or another processor, that is the question
PS! I have already checked that the cables and drives and other stuff is working properly and they do...
Plz help a old comp nerd with this problem / snyggdia

    Couple of things:
First, to snyggdia, I would recommend trying to borrow a Northwood CPU in order to flash your BIOS first, as I was able to do that much at least with my POS PSU I used to have.  The reason I suggest doing this first is in case you decide to send back the Prescott and exchange it for a Northwood, you might not need a new PSU (I don't know the requirements for a Northwood, as I went straight from Willamette to Prescott).
Secondly, to Pikthulhu, I used to have a 500W Ultra brand PSU with 19A on the 12V rail, and I can assure you it would not boot WinXP with two HDDs, two Optical Drives, a Radeon 9600, and four case fans (could not even boot XP's install CD).  As far as your current issue, it seems at least possible to me that having been using your under-powered PSU, you either burned out an IC somewhere on your MoBo, or the PSU spiked at some point and bit you that way.  For the system to have been running, and now not run with even minimal load on the PSU, it seems like that has to have happened.  You definately need a new PSU, but you may also need a new MoBo, CPU, or possibly even RAM.  Examine everything for any kind of scorch marks, and more importantly *smell* the entire system, and I mean sniff thoroughly.  If you did burn out an IC (or any component) somewhere, chances are pretty good that it would have been surface mounted, which means the only scorch marks visible would be _under_ the damaged component.  However, the distinct smell of electrical fire will probably be noticable for several days afterwards, although most likely only very close to the component.
Hope this helps, and be sure to keep us updated on how things work out!
BTW, once you get your systems running, I think you'll be relatively impressed with the Prescott .  It isn't the best for benchmarking, but it handles my abusive style of multi-tasking quite well

  • PT880 problems, Prescott PSU requirement?

I was wondering if I could run a pentium 4 2.8E on a PT880 motherboard and a power supply with the following stats:
    +3.3 : 28A
    +5 : 40A
    +12 : 18A
    -12 : 1.0A
    -5 : 1.0A
I ask this because when I turn on my computer, it doesn't post and I can't access the bios. I checked my D-bracket and it shows 4 red LEDs. I checked all my power connections and everything is plugged in.
I tried replacing the processor with a friend's Pentium 4 3.0C, however nothing changed.
    My system:
-Motherboard : MSI PT880 Neo LSR
    -CPU : Intel Pentium 4 2.8E "Prescott"
-Memory: 512 mb DDR 333 Corsair XMS
-Video card: nVidia GeForce 4 4400
    -Power Supply: 420w

    i have a 3 ghz northwood  and a 3 ghz prescott ,
the northewood has never given me a simgle problem
the prescott on the other hand , well its a diferent story.

  • PT 880 Neo series MoBo & Prescott 2.8 CPU

Okay, my question is just to confirm my conclusion.  I just got my P4 2.8 ghz Prescott CPU and an MSI PT880 Neo-LSR MoBo.  I got everything put together and pressed the power button & nothing happened.  Tried reseating the RAM and that didn't work either.  I looked on the D-Bracket and it was showing 1, 3, & 4 LEDs were red and 2 was green.  I looked in the user manual and it said something about the memory detection test.  I know that my RAM is fine and nothing is wrong with it, oh yeah, I have two sticks of 256 megs of PC2100 (266).  I then looked on page 2-3 and looked at the chart where it looks like DDR 266 won't work with an 800FSB CPU.  I would appreciate it if anyone can confirm this for me.  Hopefully this will be quicker than holding on the phone.  Thanks in advance.

You must flash your bios because from what i have read the pt880 is not prescott ready.  I had the same problem with the pt880 and the 2.8 prescott.  So my best bet is for you to go out and borrow your friends cpu, installl it and then install the live update, and finally put your cpu back on.  Right now im stuck with my buddy's cpu and has my chip.  Hope this helps.

  • Reset CMOS, system will not boot

This is a long story but I will try to keep it short:
I just bought a new 875P Neo-FISR and a 3.0 GHz Prescott, which from reading the other posts could have been a mistake. I installed the CPU, memory, and the video card and pressed the power button and received a "CMOS Data Wrong" error. So I tried to correct the problem but when I saved and exited then the system would not boot back up. So, I reset the CMOS via the jumper and tried again. After MANY attempts I change just the month in the date setting. And what do you know...it would not boot back up. The D-Bracket LEDs were: 1-flashing red/green, 2-flashing red/green, 3-red, and 4-red
I must have read almost every post in this forum and tried many things such as:
disconnecting all componets except for video, ram, and cpu
the during boot to recover the BIOS
removing mobo from case, maybe a short
moving the memory to different slots
moving the PSU to a different computer...it works
disconnecting the PSU from the mobo and and removing the battery overnight. The first night I did not disconnecting the PSU from the mobo and I found that did nothing.
Tryed everything that I could think of and some stuff that others thought of but nothing worked. However the last item...removing the battery...did change things some. Now nothing happens, and I mean nothing...no lights, no fans, no buzzing...nothing.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The only recourse I have left is to RMA the board.

I tried one stick in all of the slots with and without the sound card. That did not work either.
The voltage for my memory is 2.6 so that is what I tried. But if I can get it to boot up again I will try 2.7.
    Tks.

  • 865PE Neo2-V memory issue

hey guys, i just put a fresh system together and i am having trouble with my corsair memory when i try to boot the system before i begin installing an operation system. I have 2 512mb pc3200 ddr sticks and 3 dimm slots to put the 2 in. My problem is that my system will only ask for a system disk if only one is plugged in (plugged into the purple one, the others are like neon greenish), if i plug in the second memory chip, i do not get the insert boot disk screen. Any sugguestions?
    -thanks!

i am trying to run a p4 3.0 ghz prescott 1 mb cache with 1 gig of pc 3200 ddr (2 512mb sticks) memory. My issue is with the memory, my board supports the memory but when i put both chips in the memory slots, the pc refuses to boot, but if i only but one of the chips in, the pc asks for a boot disk as it should. The hard drive has no OS installed currently. I am trying to do that now. The hard drive is 120 gigs 7200 rpm 8 mb buffer. I read the manual and it had something in there about Dimm slots but i never heard anything quite like it before. Basically i want to know why my motherboard is only liking one 512 stick rather than both of them together.

  • Big Thank You

I just wanted to say without this forum I would not have a working computer. I have worked in the computer field for 7 years and built countless systems. Imagine my surprise when I recently built a system based on a Prescott and learned that building a PC is not as straightforward as I though. I had three seperate issues that you guys helped me with, and I can confirm some issues with the prescott. My PC is built on the 880 Neo
1st issue-PC would not boot, so after browsing the forums I found that my power supply was way inadequate (250 watt CompUSA power suppy). After reading about PSU I went to a Antec true power 430, no worries. At least now my PC would boot to hang after Post
2nd issue-Would not boot off of floppy or CD. Prescott CPU would not allow me to boot, so I took machine to work and swapped out a P4 Northwood and flashed Bios to 1.4. After flash I was finally able to install OS
3rd issue- After looking on here I learned to get rid of CoreCenter and get speedfan. At that point I learned my PC was going to like 52-55 C at idle. I then applied another layer of Artic Paste, and then just to be sure I added a case fan. Now my machine idles ate 44 C and maxes to 61 C under load.
Thanks to you guys I got all of my issues sorted out and machine is working, and I must say I am very satisfied with my prescott. Thank you for all of you help, and for those that have problems it is possible to get answers here without even posting a question, just use the search function.
And I can confirm that 1.4 Bios or better is needed to run a Prescott. Here are my specs. very powerful machine
    Antec case
    Antec Tru Power 430 PSU
    2.8 GHZ Prescott
    880 Neo MB
280 GB Seagate HD space (80 Gig, 200 Gig)
    1 GB Kingston memory

    Hi,
As Danny said........ And thank you taking time to reply/post here.
OK upgrade BIOS too 1.7......... You will not be disappointed.......better POST and faster USB hardware detect times.....
Oh and write down BIOS settings before you update......then you can just set again as in 1.4 bios......

  • CoreCenter okward behavior?

    hello guys,  ,
so some guys replied to my corecenter behavior problem, well here is more trouble for them ok, here goes . Now my corecenter was running my PC fan at 2400-2600 RPM now after a few days it has not been as hot as 37 C or more in my City so now my CPU fan is running at the moment at 3245 RPM . well when i start my computer it is 2909-2960 then it shifts to 3125-3245. the system temperature according to CC is 36 C  . So guys what do u think i have not done anything except the following .
    Reinstalled windows xp SP2
    installed latest INF intel software
    Intalled Latest core Center 1.7.3.0.
Now my CPU temperature of Prescott is 46-47 C as average at doing nothing except net using .
So guys is this corecenter crazy?  .
What is going on . As most of u have asked for info of my CPU here it is .
CPU pentium 4 2.4 Ghz prescott 533 bus.
MSI 865PE Platinium edition Neo2 Motherboard
Bios version is 3.5 or 3.6
    MSI Geforce FX 5200 T-128  64 bit
Powersupply is Superpower china made 300 Watts
Casing has got one small extra fan
    Stabimatic 500 V stabilizer .
    bye guys help me out

    3. CPU fan speed increases to 3125-3245 RPM temp is 35-37
    4. Start heavy game like medal of honor or something
    5. CPU fan speed adjusts to 2200-2300-2400 RPM
Thats strange. It should be like this:
    1. start computer
    2. CPU fan speed is 3125-3245 RPM, room temp is 34-36 C
3.CoreCenter stars up, adjust CPU fan speed to 2200-2300 RPM, temp is 35-37
    4. Start heavy game like medal of honor or something
    5. CPU fan speed adjusts to 3125-3245 RPM
This is what its like in my system. Higher temp=>higher fan speed.
It is the CPU temp you are talking about, right?
Do you have any fan speed settings in BIOS?

  • System reboots in games

    *Edited*
Ok lets do this one more time.
First of all this is what i use. Windows XP SP2.
P4 3,4 GHz Prescott socket 775 with a Zalman 7700 Cu cooler. Soltek SL-915GPRO-FGR mainboard. Corsair 2x512 DDR Dual Channel memory and MSI GeForce NX6800-TD256E VGA with a AC Silencer 5 cooler. In windows i have no problems but when i start a game it freezed. Sometime almost directly and sometimes it takes a while 1-5 minutes. Games it has happened in yet is Everquest2, Battlefield 1942, Doom3, Counter-Strike. Systems freezes and sometimes after a while it reboots. Since i have good cooling on but CPU and VGA i dont think that the temp is the problem. Tried clocking down my card as i read in other posts but with the same result, it freezes. Using the 71.22 driver MSI has on its homepage. If anyone got any idea what the problem might be please post.

Sounds like you have been struck down by the 6800 "feature" that i have been plauged with.
Try these things to confirm it.
    1) Memtest86+ test for RAM
    2) Clean driver install (use Detenator RIP or DriverCleaner)
    3) Unplug all unneccesary CD drives/HDs.... ie bootup with only C: installed.
    4) Underclock to ~400MHz DDR (i.e 2x200MHz)
If the underclock works, you have a dodgy card.  A solution to this blackscreen problem has been found, and you have allready fitted a new fan = NO RMA.  My card worked at 300MHz core and 520Mhz DDR.  Should of been 300*700...
    Hope this helps
    Bila
PS: AGP voltage is irrelavent as it takes it all from the 12V line of the PSU directly.
