48"x48" poster PDF - graphics distorted

Good evening,
I'm having some minor difficulties tonight. Nothing that I can't handle via a workaround, but was wondering if anyone knew why some InDesign elements are getting distorted in my PDFs.
Here's the process I'm going through:
I'm working on a 48"x48" poster that includes a logo, some text and some multi-angled shapes that I drew with the pen tool in InDesign on a blank background. The shapes extend from the very top edge down to the very bottom edge.
When I look at the PDF that I generate, however, the shapes that I drew in InDesign have been squashed to about 2/3 their true height (it's not just missing the bottom third -- the shapes are actually distorted, the bottom of the shapes being pulled up and the angles adjusted accordingly).
And, to go over my PostScript file generation process:
I have a Print Preset in InDesign that I use to create a PostScript file, which I then drag to Distiller, which is set to the PDF/X-1A:2001 setting.
My Print Preset for generating the PostScript file includes the following settings:
Printer: PostScript File
PPD: AdobePDF 8.0
Paper Size: Custom (which automatically sets the size of the PDF to my document size)
Marks/Bleeds: (all off)
Is there something I'm missing? Is it just due to the 48" size of the InDesign document (I've saved a separate, half-size version of the InDesign file and created a PDF of that one and it looks fine)?
I've tried exporting the page as an EPS, resaving from Illustrator, dragging that EPS to Distiller to create a new PDF (same issue) as well as placing that EPS back into InDesign and re-creating the PDF (same issue).
The only thing that makes the PDF look correct is setting the InDesign file to a percent scale of the actual size ... or doing a standard Export and selecting Adobe PDF from the drop-down list (which can create unreliable files that may look fine on-screen but then print incorrectly, so I typically don't use this method).
One other note: on a separate test file I created, I added a black fill to the background of a 48"x48" InDesign file, drew a similar multi-angled shape on top of it in another color, used my normal PostScript file-to-Distiller method of creating a PDF, and the black actually filled the canvas in the PDF, but this new multi-angle shape was, again, distorted.
Any thoughts on why this might be happening?
Thanks!
Oops, forgot my versions:
InDesign CS2
Acrobat Professional 8.1.2
Mac OS X 10.4.11

There does not seems to be any preference that can be set. Clipboard text or images are placed as stamps.
One option for people who just need to paste text would be for them to insert a text comment field and paste their formatted text from Word there. (The reason to paste from Word is because the formatting will be maintained.)
Your customers may want to consider making their own custom stamp for their logo and/or any standard text that they want to appear on your newsletter. If they had their logo and text set up in Word, they could create a pdf using Acrobat.com or another free service. In Reader, they could use that pdf to define a custom stamp. A custom stamp would eliminate cutting and pasting and could be resized easily. The stamps could only be used in pdf documents that have commenting enabled, but they would not have to create a custom stamp for each newsletter – previously made stamps would be available to use in future newsletters.

  • Rasterize PDF graphics

I've built a presentation where almost every slide has one or more PDF graphics (actually Illustrator files). They load okay on the mac (slight lag when displaying the slides with lots of them), but I'm getting horrible lag on the iPhone version. I suspect its rasterizing each vector before rendering it, and that's taking forever on the A5 chip. Is there a way for Keynote to pre-rasterize all the graphics at their current sizes (meaning I don't have to export each image through Illustrator and put them back in, trying to make things the same size) so it'll load faster across both platforms? Is there a Rasterize command in Keynote that I'm missing?

Thanks Barbara, you got me on the right direction. Not exactly sure the difference between the different kinds of JPEG files. However, it seemed to me that the graphics were simply not liked by iOS. I found a post on a different forum that said if you open the PDF file up on a PC using current Adobe Acrobat, or on a Mac using Preview with current Mac OS, you should use the program to save a copy of the PDF file, which somehow comes out different than the original. I am figuring that the new file gets reassembled with current formats. I did this on Preview on my Mac. The new file was x4 the size. I took the new file, dragged it into iTunes, synched it over to my iPad and it worked! The pictures were there with just a little graphics degradation, but not enough to seriously matter. When I used Adobe on a PC, I could see that there were security features enabled on file. When I made a copy, all I got was a blank file. So, hats off to the Mac here.

  • Getting thumbs to show up from PDF graphics

I'm having trouble getting some of the thumbnails to show up in my Artwork palette - specifically, the graphics that are in PDF format.<br /><br />I've regenerated the palette by holding <Shift> on relaunch, removed & re-added the pdfs themselves, created new pdf graphics to test if THEY show up (they don't), even deleted the .db3 files for both media & thumbnails (folks, I don't recommend doing that unless you ABSOLUTELY have to) - but still no thumbs from PDF graphics.<br /><br />Anyone got another idea?<br /><br />Mike<br />http://www.graficalicus.com

Ian. I think the OP is states they purchased songs from WiFi iTunes off the iPhone. Went into iTunes to convert to ringtone but they are not showing up correctly.
OP if you could post better details about what you are experiencing and doing we can better assist. I think I have a good sense of what is going on but would need more info before anyone here can properly advise.

  • Posting pdf to Facebook

How can I post a graphic image from PDF to Facebook?

Perhaps easiest is to screen capture in Adobe Reader, save as JPEG from Paint (or whatever).

  • Lower PDf graphics quality after upgrade from v8 to v9

Some PDF Graphic quality is poorer whne using the new Acrobat compared to version 8.
I recently purchased Acrobat 9 Pro extended as part of the TCS2 and installe dhtis on a new machine. The installation replaces Acrobat 8 professional installed on a different machine.
I have checked the job options in detail on each machine and they appear to be identical.
The problem is most notable in a graphic header which appears on the first page of the Word document template from which the PDF is generated. The file is an imported PNG with a complex blue gradient band and the company logo across the top of the page. The band is underlined by a thinner grey band which fades vertically to white. In the resulting output, blue colors show too bright and quite different to the original PNG graphic. The grey band does not fade smoothly and appears as separate bands.
My colleague has installed Acrobat 9 on the same machine as the previous Acrobat 8 installation and is experiencing the same issue.
I have tried generating a PDf with an old known good file base don the same word template and the result  is the same so this probably rules out the Word template. Older PDFs generated with the v8 Acrobat do not do not display this way and i still can generate PDFs using the old machine and version 8 Acrobat without any problems.
Can anyone suggest how i might progress with this?

There are no display problems because i can satisfactorily generate the file using the Print option and selecting the AdobePDf printer.
I have set the Color Management Policies of the joboption to Convert all Colors to CMYK from Leave Color Unchnaged and this seems to improve the quality considerably so i'll stick with that. Some gray color gradient doesnt seem to convert smoothly and shows as varying bands of shades of gray but i can live with that, unless i can find a setitng that handles that.

  • Placing a PDF graphic into an existing XML hierarchy?

I have an existing XML hierarchy that has a picture element that looks like this:
    <picture href=""></picture>
which is already placed in a TextFrame.
I'd like to place a PDF graphic at the location of this element, in essence updating it.
I'm able to update the href attribute with the correct filename, but this doesn't create a placed graphic AFAICT.
I can place a graphic in my TextFrame, but don't understand how to specify this <picture> element as its location.
Any pointers to example code, or hints/tips?
    Greatly appreciated!
    Charles

Oh, right. Did we forget to tell you that trying to use XML in InDesign is usually a bad idea and that you could do much better without it?
    Anywhohowwhichwhywhere...
    In keeping with that theme, XML doesn't really come into play. If you have a rectangular frame rect and a filename filename and you want to place  filename in the rect then you just use: rect.place(filename);
So in your case, it's just about defining the two. I guess:
    var rect, filename;
    rect = app.documents[0].selection[ROW].associatedXMLElement.
        xmlElements[COL].xmlElements[0].xmlElements[0];
    filename = new File(rect.xmlAttributes[0].value);
    rect.place(filename);
Of course, if your filename is really a URL you'll have a spot of trouble there, maybe.
And you might be better off using XPath, i.e. .evaluteXPathExpression("//picture") to get your rectangle.
And what if href= isn't the first attribute of the <picture/> tag?
I suppose that perhaps you should consider using the .placeIntoFrame() and .placeXML() methods of the XMLElement class. I suspect you'll be sorry if you try, but go ahead :-).

  • Major screen/graphics distortion while editing in iPhoto.  Any ideas?

    Hi there,
I have a 13" MacBook Pro purchased in late 2011.  We bought the computer specifically for photo editing, as I have a DSLR camera.  The issues with iPhoto started almost immediately after the computer was purchased.  Here's what happens - I'll be editing in iPhoto (usually within the "adjust tab", not quick fixes).  After a few minutes, iPhoto starts seriously dragging, I get the wheel, then I start getting super crazy graphics distortions, but just within the iPhoto screen.  A few more minutes of this, iPhoto usually crashes (in rare cases, it takes down the entire system).  First I had the hard drive replaced.  No dice - problems persisted.  Then Apple replaced the logic board including the video/graphics card.  Still no luck.  I took it in again a week ago, and they are stumped.  They are apparently working with their engineering team and looking at "logs" (?) but it doesn't sound hopeful.  They tell me anything that could be hardware-related has been ruled out, but it's still happening.
    System stats:
Mac OS X Lion version 10.7.5
    2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
Has anyone had similar issues or hear of anything like this before??

First off the 13" Late 2011 Mac notebooks don't really have a add-on Graphics Card in them. They use the Intel HD 3000 graphics chip that is included in the Intel CPU. So I would guess when Apple said they change the graphic card they meant that the graphic system was changed with the logic board and the CPU.
Also the 13" MBPs aren't that great for Photo editing because of the Intel HD 3000 graphic system. But then I do run Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 4 on a Dell notebook that only has the Intel graphics and I have never had either program crash or give flaky graphic distortions.
I suggest you try Adobe Lightroom, Adobe has a free 30 day trial of it, and see if the same things happen. If Lighroom does the same things then it is hardware related in some way. If Lightroom doesn't crash and or give distorted graphics then it is something to do with iPhoto.
I personally don't use iPhoto as I already own Lightroom and Photoshop.
Lightroom is a very powerfull image editing program and a very good image cataloging and management program all rolled up into one package

I need to Extract a PDF graphic, crop and save as a new PDF. Not sure how to do this. Can anyone help me out with this?

There is a crop tool you can use. You can also use the select object tool and right click on the graphic and see if you can edit it in your preselected program (you can choose a default raster imaging editor and a vector graphic editor in Preferences -> Content Editing)

  • PS to PDF generation distorted

    Hi
We are generating PS to PDF via 3b2 platform. While generating the pdf, the pdfs were distorted.
Can anyone help me to sort out this kind of issue. I have the problem pdf in my hand and i am not able to attach.
    Thanks for all your help.
    Regards,
    Subbu

If you are having them print a PS file to the server and using Acrobat (or Distiller) for the conversion, you should read the EULA. Acrobat is not licensed for use on a server (including Distiller). For server use you should be looking at the Distiller Server.
In terms of the problems, they should probably be embedded the fonts in their PS files if the server does not have the fonts they are using.

  • Why there is some graphic distortion after i installed the new OS

Since I installed the New OS X mountain lion, i noticed that there is some graphic distortion specially when opening mails and playing games. i have macbook pro with i7 processor. anybody encounter problem like this? anyone can help me for a solution. thanks

Do you have something like this http://cl.ly/image/0c2y422p0r0f ? This is my screen shot from Mail.app, I didn't tested Mountain Lion in games, but one time 1,5h after instalation of new OS X my system has crashed, and reason was GPU problems (I hope drivers only, I read this in Console.app). ML was freezing about 4-5 minutes, on the dock were artifacts, so I had to do hard reset. My computer is MacBook Pro 13" i5 2,3 Ghz + Intel HD 3000 + 8GB Ram + SSD.

  • Safari tab opening is very slow with graphic distortion

When i open a new tab in safari, it takes quite sometime to open up, and when it does there is graphic distortion while showing the top sites. Sometimes safari hangs during the tab opening and might also crash. i recently brought the macbook, its been less than a month and this problem has been there since the beginning.
when i checked out the bugs fixed in 10.6.2 this bug for graphic distortion was supposed to have been fix, looks like this that hasn't happened for me. my mac is up to date.

    Ok... try maintenance.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594
Make sure Safari is running in 32-bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.
Relalunch Safari. If the distortion is still visible, go to ~/Library/Safari and move the TopSites.plist file to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari. If the distortion remains, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

  • Has 10.9.3 Fixed the Graphics Distortion Issues?

I have been running Mountain Lion for months now after having too many issues with Mavericks graphic distortion. I would love to eventually be able to upgrade my OS since it was Mevericks at one point and now I can't open any of my files.
Can anyone who was had the same issue confirm that it is no longer a concern?

  • Post PDFs online for continuing education credits

Does anyone have a recommendation for a program, other than Moodle, that can be used to post PDFs online for a continuing education course? I understand that Moodle is difficult to use and I need something easy to use and reasonable price.

If all you want to do is post pdf files, then any ftp client will do that. Most isp will allow you to setup your space for either ftp or http. If you upload your files, then anyone with a web browser or ftp client will see a list of files they can download. If you want something more sophisticated, then you can use either BBEdit ($49 educational) or Dreamweaver ($199 educational) to create a very very simple website. There are plenty of programs for creating a website with price points below BBEdit or between BBEdit and Dreamweaver.
Google will provide you with a free website and tools for creating content and space for uploading your pdf files. The cost is pretty good as well $0.00.

Possible in Final Cut, easier in Motion. But if you're talking money, they come bundled together in a suite anyways (Final Cut Studio).

    Hello lyon09,
Unfortunately i have not yet made it to the Genius Bar as of yet. I ended up canceling the appointment i re-scheduled too and haven't made another one. Basically, i was only gonna go in just because i said the Battery gave me a "Service Battery" error message, which means that "the battery isn’t functioning normally, and you may or may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. Have your computer checked by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP). You can continue to use your battery before it’s checked without harming your computer."
So that was gonna be my main reason for going in there, and at that time discussing and showing him what Top Sites is doing to me.
    1. Top Sites has a distorted graphics that have been there since 10.6 came out....10.6.1 was supposed to fix it, did not....then 10.6.2 was supposed to fix it, and as of right now it still is not fixed.
I have done an Archive & Install with no success.
    2. Battery showed me that Service Battery error message just that one evening. My battery was drained completely and when i plugged it in and got it working again, the Service Battery error was there for about 45 minutes or so until it got a sufficient charge it decided it would go away. I haven't seen it since.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/20865.html
It has now been about a week since i last saw that message.
That was my main reason for canceling the Genius Bar appointment, because the battery seems to be working for the time being. If i see that message again though, then i won't hesitate to take it in.
I'm starting to wonder now though, should i just take it in anyways. Because if i saw that message, on the battery, and they need to replace that - then if there is some other reason for the distorted graphics in Top Sites, like maybe the Logic Board....then i want to get it fixed. It's under warranty for 3 years.
I just haven't found reason other than having that fluke Service Battery message to go in and have it checked out. If my video gets really whacked out or i see that battery message again, then i'll go promptly.
Does anybody else have any input on this? Thanks!
