4gb limit on external drive (OT I know, but can't seem to post in Leopard)

I need to tranfer some video files to a PC, is there really STILL no easy way to do this?? Mac makes the file but splits it in 2, which needless to say leaves the PC scratching its head. I know about the Fuse thing, but that sounds a bit dodgy too now.

You can install NTFS-3G (freeware from: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10913782 ) on your Mac, then format the drive as NTFS and there won't be the file size limit that you encounter with FAT 16 or FAT 32 formatted drives.
Or install MacDrive on the Windows system and format the drive as Mac OS Extended (HFS+).

  • How to limit the external drives that Bridge searches?

I'm experiencing the problem that I find myself working on the files chosen from Bridge that have been selected from my external drive.
This can lead to catastrophic results, of course, when the user will overwrite the wrong files, etc.
I have looked all through the Bridge preferences, but I can't find anyplace to limit the searches to just the original main hard drive.
Of course it's nice to have backup on the external drive, (which I have cloned with Carbon Copy Cloner)... but often I look up from working on a photoshop file and realize I've been working on a file that originated from the external drive, and not the original HDD.
    This is driving me nuts!
So.... is there any way to limit the external drives that Bridge will search?
    Thanks!

Yes, in the find menu (cmd+F or menu:Edit/Find) you have a window that let's you select the source where to look in, if you choose your hard drive as source to look in it will only find the files there.
The folder panel may also be useful for your purpose, although I personally almost never have need for the find option in Bridge it might be when having Bridge pointed to a certain disk or folder the quick find field top right in Bridge window might also do the trick for you.
Of course it's nice to have backup on the external drive, (which I have cloned with Carbon Copy Cloner)...
I would not use Carbon Copy Cloner for back up but a dedicated back up application like Synchronize Pro, Just copy the whole content you want to use for back up to an external HDD and customize Synchronize the way you like it (when to back up, archive the older files etc etc). There are also a lot of other (some free) back up utilities.

  • After partitioning external drive network Time Machine instance can't back up

This is a re-post with additional background information requested by several responders:
I recently added a G-Speed Q RAID array to my MAC PRO to use exclusively for back-up with Time Machine.  I purchased this RAID array from the Apple store, so assume that means it's acceptable to use for this purpose.  Maybe that's a bad assumption on my part.  In any event, it worked great with Time Machine on my MAC PRO.  The G-speed array is connected to my Mac Pro via Firewire 800 port for now.  I am awaiting delivery of an eSATA expansion card for the Mac Pro which I intend to switch to when it arrives.  In any event, it is not configured or capable of acting as an NAS device.  It is a shared external drive on the MAC PRO.
My next step was to share the external device over my hardwire gigabit LAN with my wife's iMAC so she could back-up with Time Machine as well.  It also worked great. Both Macs are connected via hardwire gigabit, supported by an Actiontec Q1000Z router.  The LAN performs flawlessly for all other purposes, including over 30 network devices connected via either hardwire or 802.11n.  Both machines are running Lion 10.7.4.  (not server)
I then started reading posts that suggested the two Time Machine instances would compete for space on the back-up array and eventually it would fill up and I'd have problems.  The solution, everyone says, is to partition the external drive and assign one to each Time Machine back-up.  It makes perfect sense to me.  I did this following the step-by-step instructions (#22) from Pondini's site.  Both partitions are formatted with MAC OS Extended (journaled).  Everything seemed to be working great until the remote client tried to run back-up.  The remote Time Machine instance fails with the "Disk does not support AFP featues" error message.
Current status is as follows, local time machine back-up works fine on its partition.  Remote machine finds and connects to its assigned partition once I provide correct user name and password, but fails while Time Machine is "searching for backup device" with the AFP error message.  The remote (sending) machine is connecting as a dedicated user and not as "Guest".
I can write test files directly to the remote back up partition from either mac and I can read, modify and save files directly to this partition from either mac.
Please let me know if any additional information related to configuration is needed.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In my "dispute" with Pondini in the other thread, I came across some information that will certainly explain things, but not in a good way.
Apparently you cannot use an external drive as a Time Machine repository. People who use Snow Leopard and Lion Server to provide Time Machine services have already discovered this.

It may work better when your eSATA card comes in. My theory is that a Thunderbolt RAID would show up as an internal drive and would be useable as a Time Machine repository. There is a chance that an eSATA card would do that too. You'll find out. Apparently, one of the things you get with Lion Server is a warning pop-up if you try to use an external drive with Time Machine.
While I'm a big fan of Time Machine, I still consider it Apple Black Magic. You can use it, but don't get too clever. I don't like to take chances with backups. Simple is usually better. Time Machine isn't simple, but it is so convenient that I like to ignore the incredible complexity of it.
If the other machine were a notebook with local snapshots I might say you could manually plug it in to do backups. With two iMacs, I would recommend just getting another external drive.

  • HT201250 I've just used an external drive to back up my Mac with Time Machine. I have Lion, but didn't click and check the "Encrypt Backup Disc". What should I do? Can I delete the external drive and start again, or can I encrypt later?

I've just used an external drive to back up my Mac with Time Machine. I have Lion, but didn't click and check the "Encrypt Backup Disc". What should I do? Can I delete the external drive and start again, or can I encrypt later?

I guess if stolen or lost it would protect my "stuff", and if I'm travelling would protect my privacy.
You must understand the purpose and implications of encryption before deciding whether to use it.
Encryption locks your data with a password. If you forget that password, the data is lost beyond any chance of recovery. Neither Apple nor anyone else will be able to help you recover that data if you don't know the password.
By the same token, the password must be strong enough to provide the security you want. For example, if you're the potential target of industrial espionage by a government or large corporation, you need the strongest possible password. To create and manage such a password safely is a task in itself, not to be undertaken lightly.
If you're only concerned about casual snooping by someone with no special skill, a weak, easily-remembered password is appropriate.
But regardless of the strength of the password, if you lose it, the data is gone forever.
Another point to remember is that if you encrypt your data on one storage device, you must also encrypt it on all other storage devices that would be accessible to the same attacker. Otherwise the data isn't protected. For example, if you keep your computer and your backup drive in the same room, and the internal drive of the computer is not encrypted, then there's no point in encrypting the backup drive.

  • ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 external drive enclosure USB 3.00 can't see my data!

ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 external drive enclosure USB 3.00 can't see my data!
    Hello to the community,
So indeed a pretty self-explanatory title. However you might not think so later.
I just received the ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 today from ebay. (But it's a product of RaidSonic) over in Germany see link:
    www.raidsonic.de/en/products/external-cases.php?we_objectID=8887
    The problem:
I have a large 1.5 TB seagate drive (15mm in height) which was originally in a iOmega external case (which was poor, thats another story).
The ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 is an extremely portable hot swappable enclosure/caddy. (Please do see the images from the above link). However when I plug my seagate HDD into the ICY adapter, it, my Mac cannot see the data I have on it whilst using this adapter! But If I use the old one my data can be seen, see images!.
You see in disk utility, before the above. A small dialog box giving me three options "initialize, and two others" appears, initialize takes me into disk utility. Shows as "ASMT 2105 Media" (not one of the partitions on the drive).
Below see connected to new ICYBOX enclosure/case: (don't ask me why it inserted upside down?)
And below using the old USB3.0 sata cable and adapter from the previous enclosure. Note that it works, my data can be seen, read and wrote. On the monitor you can see my "Data core" partition mounted!
As you can see the above is the drive plugged in using the old adapter and cable (SATA chip + USB 3.0) from iOmega. This works no problems you can see my partitions mounted and yes they do work.
This is disappointing as far as the  ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 is concerned for me. It should just work out of the box. But no it can't mount or even in anyway see my partitions that are definitely there. I want to use the ICYBOX IB-AC6031-U3 for this drive and should be able to but I cannot reformat and don't want to as this is the biggest drive a have at the moment.
There has to be a way around this, I have contacted RaidSonic who make the adapter and await a response. I have also done some  web searching but nothing promising has turned up.
Your input will be greatly appreciated,
    Many thanks,

  • How to transfer iTunes library to an external drive (thats easy!) but keeping the playlists musics on the computer?

How to transfer iTunes library to an external drive (thats easy!) but keeping the playlists musics on the computer?
    Many thanks!

Select a single song with a broken link, press CTRL+I to Get Info, cancel when asked to locate the track and take a look at the Summary tab. Post back where iTunes is looking for the file. It begins file://localhost
    Where is it really?
Please post back both paths so that I can make suggestions. Full paths please, exact spellings, you can replace your user name with <User> if needed.

I've just got a new computer does any one know how to transfer my song to my new computer. I've installed itunes but can't seem to transfer the songs.

    you can use home sharing.
or, assuming you have all your media files in the default location, copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder) from the old to the exact same location on the new machine.
you can either use your network or an external HD for that.

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

Have i-Tones account have reached 5 computer limit. Need to "deauthorize" other computers but can't because I had to turn into my company when I retired. What do I do??

    I quote:
To deauthorize all computers associated with your account
If you find you have reached 5 authorizations, you can reset your authorization count by clicking Deauthorize All in the Account Information screen.
Click iTunes Store in the menu on the left side of iTunes.
If you're not signed in to the store, click the Account button, then enter your account name and password.
Click the Account button again (your ID appears on the button), enter your password, and then click View Account.
In the Account Information window, click Deauthorize All.
Note: You may only use this feature once per year. The Deauthorize All button will not appear if you have fewer than 5 authorized computers, or if you have used this option within the last 12 months. If you need assistance on using this feature, please contact the iTunes Store support via email (http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww/).
Once you have done this you can re-authorize the computers you need to.

  • Can i move garage band files to an external hard drive?  my mac air is low on HD space and i'd like to work on the files through garage band, but on an external hard drive.  i know i can do this with eye movie.  thanks.

hi each and all out there!
i've looked for answers through the help section of garage band and can't find any topics that fit my situation (so far that is :-)).
a friend recently held a memorial service for her husband and i both video taped and audio taped the service.
She would like some editing done on each (video and audio).
i have a mac air that is pretty much filled up and so i need to work on these files not on my computer, rather from an external drive.
through an iMovie discussion, i've been figuring out how to get video files onto an external drive so that i can work with them there through iMovie.
Now i'm wondering about Garage band and can i move the audio files onto an external drive and then work with them there, through Garage band.
and can i just move more of these files (not yet on my computer) directly to the external drive (like i do in iPhoto)?
Thanks so much ... any help would be greatly appreciated, chris.

Other than iMovie, GB always incorporates the audio files into the GB package. So just save or move the GB project to the external drive, and you're done - anything you import, edit or record will be saved to the external drive.

  • Can't save multiple folders to external drive. Get: "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." when dragging large folders to mac os extended journalled external drive from OS 10.6.8

    Hi
    I am feeling  VERY desperate!
After losing an external drive [dont ask....]  -   I got  another one :  2TB WD formatted properly [ OS extended journalled for mac ] ready for action to move  my thousands of files and images and ppts in hundreds of folders across from the laptop to this drive because I travel a bit with the laptop and this is too risky not to back up at home.
But this message came up after starting on moving folders across [** and not straight away, sometimes after moving  a folder  when  4 of 6 gb of files across  then the message comes up  = very frustrating]:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."
I am  dragging mixed sometimes large complex folders to this  os extended journalled external drive from my mac book pro OS 10.6.8  - it would take decades to move items one by one or even folder by folder and really confusing.
I have  dragged-copied  various small folders and files across successfully, but it is only working 50:50 and I can't leave machine with the idea of things copying eg: overnight - it just won't work....
I have been browsing google and find some people describing in CODE how they overcome this 'message'   .... but  I  [and I guess some other viewers of this in future & also in desperation]  would need  instructions for beginners....  to try this type of thing.  I don't know any code.
How can this be happening - I feel ANGRY at APPLE !!!!  for not posting easy fix instructions yet re; this, or better still  updating software so it doesn't happen [ that I can find at least  !!! ] .   There seem to be hundreds of people stuck with this stupid message and inability to back up their projects etc.
    Can anyone help ?
    Many thanks

    15 August 2011

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!
    Julie
