5-character password?

I went to the Verizon Wireless store.  I told an employee that my phone is broken and I would like to buy one.  He asked for my cell phone number and I gave it.  Then, he asked for a password.  I gave it and it was wrong.  He said that the password was 5-character.  My cell is in my mom's account.  I didn't understand what he was talking about.  Can anyone help me?

ask your mom
there is an account password that is needed to upgrade
it keeps people from upgrading on family accounts without the account holders permissions
in other words its working as intended

First make sure you are connecting to the right network. The next thing to do would be to change the password for the WiFi network to 8 characters.

    Hi
I've found that if I add a simple password with more than 5 characters in it and I can't authenticate to the netware server via cifs. if the password is shorter than 5 characters it works fine, what am I doing wrong or is this a limitation to the novell cifs protocol?

There is certainly no 5 character password limitaton for CIFS. What
kind of passwords are you using for CIFS authentication? Simple password
or universal password? How do you initially set your password?

  • 8 character password limit for root on 7x10

    Hi,
is there any good reason why the Amber Road/Open Storage Appliances make use of crypt, when other encryption algorithms are available in Open Solaris? This means that only the first 8 characters of any local password are significant.
    thanks

To my knowledge, there is no way to do so, short of using external authentication.

  • Non Working 13 Character WEP Passwords

I tried connecting my iPhone to my Wi-Fi network, that currently uses a 13 character password for its 128 bit WEP security. However, the phone keeps saying the password is incorrect, despite the fact that I have entered it correctly. I changed the password to a 3 then an 8 character one (While calling Apple Support) and the iPhone works fine with both of them. I changed it back and the 13 character one and it still won't take. Either the phone says "Incorrect Password" or that it could not log onto the network. I'm using an AirPort Express. Any suggestions would help, thanks!

I had problems that I posted in another thread where it wouldn't take my password in VPN, Mail, or on Web pages that authenticate. I had the character @ in my password. I changed my password to include only numbers and letters and it worked find after that! Does your password contain any special characters?
There's also been an issue since iPhone came out that wasn't fixed by the 1.1.1 update today. My IMAP display name is set to "Lastname, Firstname". The comma in the display name is causes it to display incorrectly in Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007, and Outlook Web Access running on Exchange 2003. Everything after the comma is ignored. Other clients seem to work okay. I blame iPhone, however, since it only happens with e-mails sent from iPhone.

You can try to increase the maxlength by running this code in the Scratchpad (Web Developer > Scratchpad;Shift+F4) or the command line of the Web Console (Web Developer > Web Console;Shift+Ctrl+K), but the server may not accept it.

  • Login password character limit?

Is there a limit to the number of characters you can use for a login password in OS X 10.4x? The Mac login screen can display 14 characters, but it seems that you can keep typing after 14 (you just can’t see the additional characters).
    Thanks,

    W.J.,
Thanks for the welcome and the help. I created a test account with a 32-character password (all numbers). I could not log in with the first 31 characters, nor could I log in if I added characters beyond the original 32; only the 32-character password worked.
Next I changed that password to a 50-character password. Again, 49 characters would not work, nor would 51; just the 50-character password would get me logged in.
So, it seems the password character limit is at least 50, but quite possibly more ... I just didn't take the time to enter more numbers to verify it. I'm wondering if the real login password character limit is 256, which from what I've been told is the login character limit on a PC.
I also noticed that I could enter more than 31 characters in the password assistant, even though the slider indicates a limit of 31. And the password I entered (again, a series of numbers) improved in quality as I increased the character count past 31 (think in this case the field itself had room for 39 characters).
In short, I haven't really found the limit to a Mac login password character count.

  • External HFS encrypted password change & Drive mounting in Disk Utility without password

    I have two questions:
    1. I have an external HFS encyrpted drive that was encrypted via Mavericks Disk Utility. I have the password for it in 1password but I cannot cut and paste it when it attempts to mount. It is a very long password and it would not be practical to type it manually. It seems that Apple does not permit pasting such passwords (I have also tried to copy the password to a sticky note and then into the drive mount password prompt with no results, thus it is not unique to 1Password). At any rate, to remedy this situation, I would like to change the password to something smaller and memorizable (which is very very unfortunate as I find this a gaping security issue for who, in their right mind will manualy type in a 60 character password every time?). I have not been able to locate a method to change this external drive's password. Any assistance would be greatly apprecaiated.
    2. Alarmingly, I AM able to mount the drive WITHOUT entry of the password if I do a verify disk and repair disk. This is horrifying. This means that without any password someone can mount the drive just by running these utilities.
    Thanks in advance.

You wrote: "It's definitely formatted for windows...I have Disk Warrior, but it doesn't see my drive "DiskWarrior only works on disks in Mac OS formats, e.g. "Mac OS Extended" (aka HFS Plus or HFS+), "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." It won't fix disks in MS-DOS/FAT32 format.
There are PC-specific disk utilities, akin to DiskWarrior for Mac, so if you have a PC as well, a PC disk utility might help repair the directory corruption if run from a PC.
External drives, whether they're formatted for PCs or Macs, can be subject to the same causes of directory corruption discussed in See my "Data corruption and loss: causes and avoidance" FAQ. Some of those causes have nothing to do with hardware failure and many are preventable.

  • How do I add a password to my wireless network

    Hello,
First time posting to the board.  So, in advance, thanks for you time and help.  I am a computer idiot..not proud just realistic.  I have read other posts and I just get lost in them as I do not have a strong working knwledge of computer knowledge.  So, after reading on the linksys help pages, I have become even more confused.  Basically what I need help with is just adding a password to my wireless network so the laptops in my house are the only ones that can use it.  Probably a very basic question, but any help would be greatly welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.
Where to find the router settings: The router's login password is usually on one of the "Administration" pages. The other settings are all found in the "Wireless" section of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1
First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".
Make sure "SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".
Next, leave the router at its default settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure it is working correctly. You must have a properly working wireless connection before setting up wireless security.
To implement wireless security, you need to do one step at a time, then verify that you can still connect your wireless computer to the router.
Next, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support. Common encryption methods are:
WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK, or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best
WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal" and "enterprise". Most home users should use "personal". Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any encryption method, you will need to supply a key (sometimes called a "password" ).
The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and key that matches what you entered in the router.
Retest your system and verify that your wireless Internet connection is still working correctly.
And don't forget to give your router a new login password.
Picking Passwords (keys): You should never use a dictionary word as a password. If you use a dictionary word as a password, even WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you pick your login password and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers, but no spaces. A login password, should be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 24 characters. Note: Your key, password, or passphrase must not have any spaces in it.
Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minumum of 24 random characters.
One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2. Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=893357 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.
    Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet. Even a long random character password will not protect you with WEP. You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2 encryption.

  • A Google Mail wrong password fix in iOS Mail

This one had me pulling my hair out. I recently decided to update my password for Gmail and once I did it recommended I setup the 2 step verification option. I thought what the heck and did so.  I usually look at Gmail in Safari but every now and then turn it on in Apple Mail on my iOS devices. Today when I did on both iPad and iPhone it would not accept my new password. After reinstalling the account, numerous different email attempt, searching Apple Dicussion and all over the web I finally found this and it worked. You need a different "special" 16 character password for each device. Good grief Google.
    https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en&ctx=ch_DisplayUnlockCapt cha

It isn't just Google. If you set up 2-step verification with Microsoft's mail or Yahoo mail or anyone else that offers it, the issue will be the same. You will need to use an application specific password because the applications (such as Mail) are not designed to prompt for and allow entry of the verification code.

  • How do I delete a wifi network when I don't have the password?

Yesterday, I had some work done on my home network, which affected all my wireless devices.  I was able to get everything up and running, but the Ipad.  I have a different type of encryption now and can't connect to my Ipad.  My nephew, who did the work, wants me to delete the current wifi and then start over so it will see the current wifi network.  The network that is showing is my new network name, but I type in the password and I get an unable to join/dismiss message.  I have tried to reset network settings, but I still see the same network.  My nephew won't be back until later in the week, I miss the wifi.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Nan

I'm not sure if this will work for you, but it's worth a shot.
    TRY THIS:
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > select 'Other...' > Enter Network Name and Security Password > select 'Join'
    MY SETTINGS:
The router is set to WPA2 Encryption.  The iPhone 'Wi-Fi Networks' settings is set to 'Ask to Join Networks'
    ISSUE BACKGROUND:
I had a problem where my iDevice (iPhone 4) would not automatically connect to my Wi-Fi router even though the name - linksys - was always present.  I didn't want to 'Reset Network Settings' yet as there were some  hotspots I didn't want to have to go through the hassle of entering 16 to 32 character passwords again.  I was planning to try the 'Forget this Network' option, but it wasn't present.  I tried the step above as a long shot and it worked.  Hope this helps.

  • Router No Asking For Username/Password

Having just upgraded from a WRT54G to a E2500 all I can say is that I'm disappointed with Cisco.
Having spent a few hours yesterday trying to resolve issues via Live Chat (ID 130105-001270 & 130105-002081) and spending more time today - I'm truly at wits end. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable with computers and networking.
I'm not sure if anyone from Cisco's Tech staff sees these posts but I don't know where else to "complain" in hopes that the next software/firmware update resolves these problem(s).
The first is my router's setup screens are totally open when using my desktop. The desktop is hardwired to the router and has the Cisco Connect software installed. I open the Cisco software and go to advanced settings. There I'm shown what my router's name is and its password. This is really strange - why would you wish to display this information PRIOR to requesting usename and password? However, once there you can go right into the setup screens by clicking OK.
I have also entered these screens directly without being prompted for username/password by using 192.168.1.1 or myrouter.local via Internet Explorer 8 or Google Chrome. At other times I am denied access because IE cannot display page.
I'm concerned because I can hide the Cisco Connect software however, anyone that uses my desktop has full access to my router via the web or Cisco Connect.
The second issue is that the password to enter the router and allow access to the internet IS THE SAME! When I had my WRT54G running I had one password (8 alpha characters) to enter setup screens. There was a router generated, 16 alpha/numeric character, password to allow outside devices such as laptops, TVs and game consoles access to the internet. When I set this router up I installed the 16 character password originally used so my laptop and Wii could connect without having to fool around with their settings. Everything was fine until I went into administration and changed the password to my old 8 character one. That is when I found out that the router uses this password setting under administration to control access to the internet AND access to the router settings!
I have uninstalled and reinstalled IE 8. I have ensured that my browser's history and caches are clear which they do when I shut IE down. I'm running Windows XP service pack 3 with the "proper" anti-virus and anti-malware software. My system is up-to-date.
I have ensured that the router is running the latest firmware 1.0.05 build 2 and software 1.4.11299.0.
I have seen other posts suggesting the removal of Cisco Connect however, I feel that this is a bandaid solution.
I'm not professing  to be a router technician however, I "feel" the problem might be the fact that the password issue is the problem. Since the same one is being used for both accessing the router and having the router grant access to the net, my desktop is allowed to access the setup screens without being prompted for username and password.
Again I hope SOMEONE from Cisco sees this and investigates.
Thanks for allowing me to "rant".
    Dave

Thank you zee29 for the reply however, when I change the router password under administration I'm presented with a screen that says the router's password has been changed on my next Cisco Connect startup. I click OK and then I'm presented with a screen that says BOTH passwords must be the same. This is crazy. My router is not secure on my desktop. Anyone who uses my desktop and wants to "fish" around can enter my router's settings without being presented with a password prompt.
And I'm still presented with the problem of connecting via 192.168.1.1. or myrouter.local using IE 8 in which a "page cannot be displayed" message appears. I can log in via Google Chrome however, once I enter the username and password once I'm able to access router without being prompted. The network isn't totally secure.
I have seen other posts where these Cisco routers are having "problems" when using IE. It would seem to me that Cisco would want to rectify this situation. Its not like I'm running a beta operating system that Cisco is not aware of. I'm running an XP system that is totally updated.
I've been running Linksys/Cisco routers for years and have never had these problems. If these "problems" continues I will have no choice but to purchase a router from another company such as Netgear and say goodbye to Cisco.
I want and need a SECURE network.

  • Weird 7.0 (7.02) wifi password problem

i have this weird problem wih wifi in 7.0 and 7.02 - it happened on my iPhone 5 and its happening on my 5S
At work we have a wifi network with an 8 character password - if i type the password the join button stays grey - if i add a space it turns blue but of course its then not the right paassword
At hom i have a wifi network with a longer password and there are no problems
I sent feedback to Apple about this but im wondering if anyone else noticed the problem and has any idea on how to solve it - ive tried resetting network settings
Unfortunately i cant ask our systems folks to change the password to something longer just to accomadate me

I understand where you coming from. Getting people to change passwords to accomadate you and I respect that you don't want to be a bother like that.
But I just want to say, that there is absolutely no magical setting or anything that will help with your situation. Unfortunately it is either Apple (probably not though), your internet provider, or your company that has gone wrong.
If it is your company that is the one liable for you not being able to connect to your internet, well then, like you said "I can't ask the system folks to change the password to something longer just to accomadate me".
If it is Apple's fault, you've emailed them and they'll probably tell you like I am that you, nor they can do anything (as there is once again not a magical setting that will fix the issue).
If it's your provider, I don't think you would have the details to contact them or the details as to the questions they would ask you.
Sorry man, but you're in a (as I like to call it) a three-way-corner. You don't have the details to go one way, the other way doesn't know how to help you (or can't) and then the third way would only annoy your "system folks".
... But if you're the boss or the CEO of some company, tell them to do it.
