Why did frame rate of video shot on iphone 5 change from 30 fps to 24 fps?

My understanding (which could be wrong) is that the iPhone shoots video with a variable frame rate. This is likely so it can optimize video for FaceTime. So uncomplicated scenes can be shot with a lower framerate, and active scenes will be shot with a higher framerate.

  • 24 fps to 25 fps please advise

    Hello,
I have a project which is recorded with HD camera, captured as 10-bit uncompressed, but most of material was recorded at 25 fps, some at 24 fps. I need advise how to convert 24 fps to 25 fps, i tried Compressor with duplicate 24th frame option, but that looks bad. Anyone have suggestion how to convert it????

You may have better luck pre-exporting media with compressor if you nest the clips into a 25 FPS sequence first. New frames will obviously need to get created, but turning on the frame controls in compressor can give you smoother results, though it'ss probably increase your encoding time significantly.
Another option you might try testing out is to re-conform the clips to 25 FPS in Cinema tools. This will effectiively speed up the clips, and the audio to match, with a slight pitch shift, however, this conversion is practically instantaneous and can be done in a batch. Keep in mind that this will most likely reconform the existing clips, so you may want to create some QT refrerence movies to reconform, particularly if you have started editing with the 24p clips - a reconnect won't be possible once the frame rates have changed.
    Hope this helps -

  • Convert 24 fps to 25 fps project.

I have accidentally made some recordings in 24 fps.
The need for a film which should also be on television - in a 25 fps project.
So the problem is that I have both 24 fps and 25 fps in the same project. it gives strobe flashes. Is there a way I can avoid it?

Personally, I'd say you're massively hosed...
You could try optical flow retiming - available in Motion/Shake/Compressor to generate new clips with the proper frame rate. But that takes a lot of time. Can you post an example of the flashes you're talking about?

  • Movie fps VS playing fps in quicktime inspector

using a 30FPS movie as example...
movie fps is the real FPS of movie.
playing fps is the FPS of:
    A. the movie actual playback FPS (meaning even though it says 30 FPS it might not be)
    B. the movie is indeed 30FPS but playback FPS is just FPS of playback as effected by system performance in qt player. but in an NLE it will playback true 30 FPS

The actual FPS might be 30, but the Inspector in QT Player will tell you how fast IT can play back the video. Might be 30fps, might be 27fps...whatever it can do. But the actual REAL FPS will still be 30fps.

  • 30p fps to 24p fps when no interlace is involved

Hello: I've shot my clip in 720p60, then uncompressed it, edited it in FCP in a 29.97fps timeline sequence, export (using QuickTime Conversion) as H.264 at 29.97fps and the result is very smooth. When I export as H.264 at 24fps the result has a slightly jerky motion (possibly because every 5th frame has been deleted ???). What is the best method to convert from 30p fps to 24p fps (no interlace is involved) ? Thank-You, MLR

Broadcast stations won't EVER want to air things in 24 fps. Here in America, when they get 24fps material they do a process called telecine and ADD (or Combine) frames to get it to 30 anyway.
    Leave it at 30.
Now, if you edited in 24 with native 24 material that would be a different story. You could add the telecine cadence onto your video and make it just right with a 'film-look'.
Here's what I suggest you do...
Call up MTV and ask them to send you their BROADCAST SPECS (often called a red book... or white book). They'll be happy to point you in the direction of it.
Also do it for PBS and maybe Discovery Channel.
Read EVERY word. Will be an education you couldn't EVER pay for. Might also open your eyes to how far over your head you might be.
    Good luck...

  • Converting  30 fps to 25 fps

    hi,
I shot some multicam footage on 2 7d cameras one was unfortunatly 30 (23.97) fps and the other 25fps any advice as to what would be best way to convert the 30 fps to 25 fps ?
I need to multiclip it in pro res 1920 x 1080 progressive sequence.
    many thanks
    ade

It can't be real 23.976. It has to be 29.97 with advanced pulldown, so recorded at the higher frame rate. You couldn't tell a one frame speed up, not slow down, by listening to it.
I think Graeme's tool is worth it, both for quality and equally importantly for speed if you're doing a lot of material. Compressor can be painfully slow.

  • Why does my iPad video shoot in 24 fps when 25 fps PAL is the standard for Europe?

At some point in trying to get my iPad 2 video into a viewable place ie my TV I had an alert telling me the iPad video at 24 fps conflicted with my iMac settings in iMovie (or it may have been iTunes) which was set up for 25 fps PAL. Is there a way to shoot 25 fps PAL on the iPad to avoid degrading quality when converting?

    Try the Settings app.
Tap on the left under the video button.
Look for the heading TV Signal.
    Change from NTSC to PAL.
    Perhaps this should/might work.

  • 24 fps to 30 fps

I built a slideshow (from stills, of course)  in FCPX with a fair number of "Ken Burns" moves on the images.  I set the FPS for the same rate as my DSLRs (23.98).  I'd like to up the frame rate to 30 fps to see if the moves on the images look smoother.  Is there a way to change the frame rate of a project, and not have to rebuild the slideshow or chage the timing of the images?
    Thanks,
    Peter

Either make a new project and copy and paste from one to the other.
    Or
Select everything. Cmd-A then Cmd-X then Cmd-J. Wrench in the lower right. Change the frame rate. Open the project. Cmd-V.

  • 30 fps to 25 fps

Does anyone know what settings in PPCS4 would give smooth playback when converting 30 fps footage (from Canon 5D MK II) to 25 fps? Every setting I've tried gives jerky output. I also tried the ConvertXtoDVD program, and it works beautifully out of the box, with very smooth DVD playback.
In the very near future, I need to mix Canon HV20 (25p) and 5D (30p) video,
so converting the 30p footage to 25p should be the first step, final output being a PAL DVD and a blu ray disc

Prateek, the 30fps to 25 fps conversion kind of works, but the output is jerky/choppy. It is playable, but not pretty to look at, because motion is not smooth like in the original 30 fps clip. It does not matter what the output format or media is, the result is the same. A search on the net suggests that there are some more intelligent ways of doing the conversion than the one implemented by premiere's mainconcept codec

  • Combining 60 fps and 24 fps footage in one project

I've got a unique and confusing problem. I am trying to make a video that has a small amount of 60 fps played back at normal speed, soap opera effect and all, placed inside of a normal 23.976 fps project (full of primarily 23.976 fps footage).
I can hear you asking "why on Earth would you want to do such a thing?!" The video project is actually designed to be an explanation and demonstration of why and how higher frame rates look the way they do, a sort of explainer on how our eyes and brains process them, etc., so I need a bit of shiny soap opera stuff, just not the whole vid, because yuck.
The final destination for this project is YouTube, which now offers 60 fps uploads, so my final export would be at 60fps. If I shoot the rest of my stuff at 23.976, how can I combine the two so the normal stuff looks normal in a 60 fps export, and the 60 fps stiff looks shiny? If I drop 23.976 into a 60 fps project/export, won't it get choppy as hell in the final export?
I've got access to PP and AE CS6 and/or CC to get the job done.

  • Change Movie 50 fps to 25 fps

My Samsung HMX-H200 HD Video recorder records at 50 fps. Although the video transfers & plays fine in iMovie 11, when I create a Project & burn to DVD, the result is an unwatchable jumpy video. I have been told this is because the video should be converted to 25 fps.
Does anyone know a simple way to do this?
    Thanks

    Hi Carrie
I have now found out how to solve the problem after a One to One at the Apple Store  with an expert on iMovie/Final Cut. When you import the movie - File - Import - Movie, uncheck the Optimize box. I have burnt movies imported this way to disc and they work fine.
During the One to One, we found iMovie was quite slow because of the high quality of the HD video. The expert suggested that I record movies in the [HD] 720/50p resolution instead of the [HD] 1080/50i which I had been using as this would work quicker on iMovie. I have recorded similar movie in both resolutions and found that there was little difference in quality in the finished movie when burnt to DVD, but iMovie did seem to work quicker with the lower resolution video.
    I hope this helps?
I am very pleased with the camcorder & was getting very frustrated by not being able to work with the footage on iMovie - but it all seems to be ok now! Another problem solved by visiting the Apple Store!!

  • 50 fps to 25 fps, twice as slow... how to?

    Hi all,
First of all : I am a total video rooky. But my friend let's me play with his Final Cut Studio this weekend as to explore what I can do with high frame rate video. Now, can somebody tell me what the best way is to achieve this :
    25 fps video output
    lossless codec
easy to work with in AE
    input:
slowmo video file shot on Canon 7D
    1920 x 1080
    H.264 codec Linear PCM
    colorprofile 1-1-6
    bitrate 47.393
Goes without saying that I want no frame loss, and of course the output can be slower.
    Thanks!
    Alex

If you used a Canon 7D and shot at 1080p you either shot 24p, 25p or 30p (29.97)
    If you shot at 50p (or 60p) you shot 1280 x 720.
These are the only frame rates and sizes this camera shoots in HD.
You need to convert the H264 to an editable format before you can use it in FCP, preferably an Apple ProRes format.
If Cinema Tools is outputting a 1280 x 720 frame size that's most likely what you have input.
Open one of the original H264 files in Quicktime, in the menu bar select WINDOW > SHOW MOVIE INSPECTOR this will show exactly what the frame size and fps is.

  • 120 FPS slowdown - 240 FPS no slowdown. Why?

I have a preset on 1080p and 60 FPS. I import a video shot with GoPro hero 3, having 720p and 120 FPS. This video is slowed down 2:1, and my googling skills told me, that is a result of Premiere Pro only going up to 60FPS. However - I also have some WGA 240 FPS shots - You would think that these would be slowed 4:1, due to 240 / 4 = 60, but they smoothly and normaly. How is that? Because I really want my 720p /120FPS to run normally as well.

    Hey Jeff
I looked into the modify you talked about, and found this:
The upper one is WGA, 240 fps. In the modify ->interpret footage, it doesnt change the FPS, video or audio.
The lower one is 720p, 120 fps. In modify --> interpret footage, the FPS is changed from 120 (as seen to the left) to 60. If I change it manually, or by "assume this frame rate: 60", the video runs normally and not slowed 2:1 - But the audio is off sync because is doubles the speed.
