5400rpm or 7200rpm? - MBP 2011 17''

Hi people!
I will buy an MBP 17'' but...
I don't know if I should choose 5400rpm or 7200rpm hard-drive.
I am developer and I want good mobility...good battery autonomy.
With 5400rpm, mac have 7 hours browsing... but with 7200rpm drive, how much i will have? 6,5 hours?
7200rpm makes much difference in terms of performance, heating, battery?
15'' model has Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500Gb...
What are drives from 15'' and 17'' from 750Gb 5400rpm or 500Gb 7200rpm?

Unfortunately the drive mfgrs. don't agree. Both variations carry the same MTBF estimations. Power consumption of the 7200 variant is usually between .1-1.0 watts depending upon the operating state: idle, startup, read, write. Heat generation is also negligible although the 7200 RPM variant may be warmer during heavy usage like doing a backup or restore. However, 7200 RPM drives are faster, and more so than just minor. Realizing the difference, however, depends a lot on the rest of the hardware. Put a fast drive in a USB box and it's slow. Firewire it's faster. But both interfaces are saturated before the drive can reach its potential. If the drive's SATA interface supports 3.0 Gb/s then putting it in a machine whose controller only supports 1.5 Gb/s will prevent the drive from reaching its potential. And this only deals with the basic interface.

MBP 15" 2.4GHz - 5400rpm vs 7200rpm HDD?

I intend to buy a 2.4GHz 15" 4GB RAM MBP. I am in a fix right now about going for which of the two HDDs 5400rpm vs 7200rpm (both of 200GB). The MBP with the default configuration(ie with 5400rpm) is for only 1699$ due to some stock clearance offer at my educational store. But, if I go for the 7200rpm the machine will cost me $1799+98, implying more $200. I intend to buy the extra 2GB RAM separately. Is it really worth it spending more 200$ on the 7200rpm HDD in my machine? I am a performance freak, and being a computer graduate student end up spending most of the time on my machine. Anyone who has used both the machines, please let me know if there is any noteworthy difference? I do understand that the decision is my personal one; but, please throw some insight and help me in making a decision quickly.

I bought a 7200rpm 100GB drive with my mbp. About a week ago I upgraded to a 7200rpm 320GB drive because I needed the space. If you, like me, are a performance freak, go with the 7200. I did and never regretted it. In fact i dealt with the space issue by buying a 500GB and a 1TB external (FW800). Because the new current MBPs use a 3.0gbps SATA interface, getting the 5400rpm might give you a bottle neck.

If you compare the 5400.5 and the 7200.3 you'll see that there is a 20MB/s difference is sustained transfer rates. Considering the 300MB/s transfer rate of the 3.0 SATA interface, you will notice a difference. SATA likes 10k rpm plus, 5400 just doesn't cut it anymore. If you don't care about voiding the warranty, go to newegg and get the 7200.3 320GB. I got mine for about $175ish OEM (can't remember). Then turn your old one into an external.
Oh, and this thread is off limits for bickering about the differences between mebibytes, megabytes, and megabits.

Yahoo mail issues on Lion OS 13" MBP 2011

Hello Apple Community. I have a problem on setting my yahoo mail on mail features on my MBP 2011. The first time I lunch it and setup it to hotmail it work. However when I add another account for yahoo mail it didn't work. I search everywhere and entered correctly the incoming and outgoing server and the port and tried other alternatives like plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com and plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com or wthout plus and trying ports 993 or 995 and also for the other port. It didn't work. I have an iphone classic already set-up for hotmail and yahoo and been using already. I tried delete those accounts on my iphone and try to set-up again on my MBP but still didn't work and prompts me that my password is been rejected by pop server. I also changing my username with or without @yahoo.com. But still it doesn't work. I already search here in apple community and followed carefully every step but i still fail on setting it up on my yahoo mail. I changed my yahoo mail account to visible which is before not visible to public but I failed so many times. Any help here who encounters same problem on Lion OS? Thanks!

If this is a stock MBP then it really is shipped with just enough RAM, 4GBs. If you have many Apps open and then try to use LaunchPad the whole computer may freeze for a moment while swaping out info from physical memory to the hard drive (also the hard drives that come in the MBP are of the SLOW type, 5400RPMs as apposed to faster 7200RPM models).
Not sure how long you have been a Mac user but if you are fairly new there is one thing you need to know.
In Windows when you click the X in the upper right hand side of an application that App closes and frees up the memory it was using.
With a Mac when you click the X in the upper left hand corner all that does is close the windows that was open. It does not exit the program. The program is still running and loaded into memory. You have to either go tomthe menu bar and select Quit "Program name". If that last program name is not on the menu bar then you have to do a Command+Tab until it is then Quit Program. You can also use Command+Q to quit the active program.
So if you are moving from Windows to Mac you probably end up with quite few programs open thinking you have closed them. This can add to the freezing you are seeing.

MBP 2011 Discrete Video Card Freezes iTunes

I just got an MBP 2011 17" 2.2Ghz i7. I have not run into any overheating issues (as addressed in other topics). However, I have isolated a very odd conflict with iTunes and the discrete video card. I can play games such as Starcraft 2 using the discrete graphics card without incident, so the card itself seems to be working fine. Somehow iTunes brings it to it's knees, though.
If I am using dynamic video card switching or have the discrete card selected and open iTunes, the entire OS locks up for about 10 seconds at a time, with about 1 second in between each lockup where things process. My mouse is free, but other applications are also locked up. If I quit iTunes, the problem goes away within 10 seconds or so. If I switch to using the integrated graphics, I can open iTunes and use it without a problem, no lockups at all.
I have tried completely removing iTunes (including all applicable plists, etc), then re-installing. No change. I have also tried re-installing Snow Leopard entirely and opening iTunes immediately after install. No change, still locks up. The Console app does not report anything relating to the issue that I can see.
I have the problem isolated and repeatable. There is some conflict between iTunes and the AMD Radeon HD 6750 discrete video card. Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone have any ideas to try? Or is this just something that will be fixed by a new video card driver released by Apple in the near term?

I do have the problems to, didn't know it was a problem of iTunes. I thought it might be my ram(changed it myself to 8GB ram to save 160$!), or my harddrive(changed it to 7200rpm that i already had).

Mini DisplayPort - VGA and MBP 2011 not working

Hi,
I can't get my 13" mbp 2011 to connect to VGA screens. I've bought a mini DisplayPort to VGA converter (an Apple one, not a no name) and if I connect a display over VGA the screen stays black. My mbp recognizes the display, I can see the display's model, resolution etc but no signal. I've tried multiple screens, none work.
I don't have other converters so I can't test if HDMI screens for example do work.
Anyone else having this problem?

I have a 2011 13" i7 and am having the same issue when connecting it to my LG TV through the HDMI adapter. However when I connect it to my HP external monitor it works but it's VERY blurry... so blurry that it hurts the eyes to look at it for more than a few mins.
My previous MBP (2010 13") works fine however with both the TV and monitor. I even reconnected it just to make sure and they both work flawlessly.
I only have 14 days total to return this new MBP and 5 of those days are used up so if I can't get this fixed by then I have no choice but to return it and go back to my old MBP.

No 1920x1080 output to external monitor from MBP 2011 OSX 10.6.8

Hi, I have a MBP 2011 running OSX 10.6.8.
I have recently purchased an Asus ML249H Monitor and the Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable 10 ft (3 m) MDPHD10FT.
The monitor should display at 1920x1080 natively but does not. The MBP max output resolution is 1600x900 on this screen. Is this a known issue with the MDPHD10FT cable or is it OSX? What it the work around to get 1920x1080.

i had to go into iCal Preferences and delete my account and then put it back in. Everything is working fine, now.

My MBP 2011 can't detect microphone, why?

My internal microphone works perfectly fine but when I insert an external microphone, my MBP fails to detect it. When I go to System Preferences>Sound>Input, nothing changes in the "Line In" area when I plug in my microphone. When I try to speak into my microphone, it's not picking up any sound at all. My headphone port works fine.
NOTE: My MBP 2011 went in for a logic board replacement/repair 2 weeks ago at an Apple Store. Is it possible this microphone issue is caused by a logic board problem?

This because line level is not Mic level, line level requires about 60 dbv/dbu or more or less of electrical gain (depending on voltage in to load specifications, db short for decibel is not necessarily a measuremet of SPL, sound pressure level, it is a mathematical equation reducing complex equations to a unit of measurement to use in math expressions...very simply put) than a microphone can generate.
You would need a mic pre-amp/mixer to provide a line signal, a mic can not provide anywhere near this level.
This is a very simplified explanation of the electrical therory at work here, and I don't think you are probably interested reading quite complex math equations that "crunch these numbers.
If you do an online search you will find a plethora of pre-amps that will boost this level up to line level, or you can look in to something like the Griffin iMic USB interface which will allow you to use a mic level signal into your USB port easily and affordably.

Backlight keyboard issue (MBP 2011)

Well I installed Lion and my MBP 2011, brand new illuminates when starting up. It goes bright then dims down to the setting I have (off). It's annoying but how can you stop it from illuminating at start up. I tried a SMC reset for my intel MBP i7 computer. Any other suggestions?

Try System Preferences>Keyboard and UNCHECK 'Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light'.

MBP 2011 Early fans issue

Hi, i've recently bought brand new MBP 2011 (early) version, and i wanna know is it ok when fans becoming so noisy when i play the game, or run some huge application. I worried about that this can harm my laptop. thanks.

the fans spin up when the computer is under heavy load, as a result they get quite noisy in order to disapate the heat generated by the Processor and Graphics Card, also these computers generate a vast temperatures that the fans can just about cope with, under load i have seen my 2.2GHz i7 2011 Macbook Pro hit 92-95 degrees Celcius far too warm in my opinion.

Is it possible to transport the MBP 2011 in standby mode in a business trolley on wheels or can this damage the HDD?

Upgraded to Maverick, now MBP 2011 has black screen while booting

I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Maverick, and I am already regretting it. Upon installation, my MBP (2011) was running slow, so I restarted it. Now, when my Mac is trying to boot, the brightness is at (roughly) 25%, and I can barely see what's happening. It looks like the loading cursor is present onscreen. The good news is that I can hear the startup chime. However, after 10-15 seconds, the screen fades to black. When I press any key, I can hear the default error sound. I tried Command+R, but that didn't do anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure what happened. Upon the umpteenth time restarting the laptop, the scree is now at 100% brightness. I was able to log in as well. All is good.

After SMC reset, MBP 2011 with Yosemite OS cannot restart

My MBP 2011 which I recently upgraded the OS to Yosemite has been giving me endless problems when it restarts or reboots. when the power button is turned on, it starts up with an apple icon with a loading bar below it. The bar progress rather slowly and somewhere before reaching the halfway mark, the whole computer shuts down and restarts by itself. This process can actually go on for like 24 hours without a single break and the last experience I had was thaynir has been restarting and shutting down for the past 72 hours!!! Finally, I did a SMC reset by removing the battery cable, pressing the power button without the battery (5secs) and got the unibody assembled, plugged in the MagSafe and tried turning it on.
to my utter shock, after the SMC reset the MBP now cannot be turned on, no lights indicated at the MagSafe and it is completely dead. What do I do??? Please help folk!

You need to take it to your local Apple Store and have it checked by a Genius. Thats the best and safest option available to you now.

MBP 2011 freezes and Kernal panic using Netflix?

Anyone have an issue with MBP 2011 13" i5 16G RAM freezing while using Netflix? Genius Bar diagnosed it as a bad motherboard. This issue started over a year ago the screen goes black and get three beeps chime sometimes i have to reset the RAM in order to clear it.

Just one more thing - the description of what i did while first Kernel appeared:
Happened 2 days ago. Wasn't turning it off for like a day, only sleep mode by closing it. Worked fine all day, wasn't doing anything, except for checking mail 2-3 times and having windows 7 virtual machine opened but doing nothing, everything was going fine. Then closed it without turning off.
Opened 3-4 hours later, everything was working fine for 30 minutes of checking mail, then Kernel appeared. After that pretty much everything i did is described in part 1-5.
Note: all the time MBP was connected to internet via wifi, so updates to both MBP and virtual machine of all programs were possible.
I only shared downloads and desktop folders, so windows couldn't have access to system folder of Mac Os.

MBP 2011 Screen brightness changing regardless of the ambient light

As stated in the subject my brand new MBP 2011 screen brightness changes on its own, yes i know about the ambient light sensor, but my screen is going from med brightness all the way to minimum brightness even though the ambient light is constant. yes I know i can turn it off, but why build in an ambient light feature that just makes the screen go to mimimum brightness when in a well lit room??
or do i have a faulty one??

I too have this problem on my spanking new MacBook Pro. Called AppleCare and they said they weren't aware of this issue.
Meanwhile, this is my 1st mac. Had it for a few weeks now. Decided to open iTunes for the 1st time. The whole MacBook Freezes, no mouse interactivity, reboot required. This happens EVERY time I start iTunes which I no longer do. Apparently it's a known issue which Apple has patched(unsuccessfully). But hey c'mon, I mean iTunes? This is one of the core apps which SHOULD be tested extensively against the hardware. When you consider Apple PROVIDES the hardware, this is simply unacceptable. Unbelievable even. I simply can't believe how poor this is from a major company. But hey my MacBook Pro LOOKS GOOD right, so who cares if it's a technically malfunctioning piece of junk.
Here's my theory. Is part of Apple's patch deliberately reducing screen brightness without user authorisation when the MacBook starts to overheat, all because they know they've been incompetent/negligent with their QA testing and the hardware can't handle the software? If so, why have users not been informed?
I'm from Australia and we have this so-so comedian called Chris Lily who fans have taken to calling a genius, the joke amongst non-fans being the word genius has been dumbed down over the years to be almost meaningless. Anyway, maybe a certified Apple 'genius' can explain the reasoning for the apparently deliberate brightness reductions?
