5500 specific question on USSD handling upgrade

There is an update for my 5500 available but... I use a prepaid sim card in it so I'm plagued with the dreaded ussd pop up.
Up until the other day the phone would start to ignore the balance messages after a little while which was great. Well the phone has some issues with the music player going and if a text message comes in and you go to read it the phone locks up after a few messsages...
So I have to restart it and the messages usually stop bugging me. Well this last restart... It still shows the message after a few days.
So what does this improved ussd message handling really mean? Does it mean that every one will show no matter what or does it mean that they won't show up at all.
Unfortunatly I haven't found any information on how to permanantly block these messages or get the phone to ignore them. There has to be an add on app to do that cause allot of people have to deal with the annoyance of balance messages.
Any ideas or thoughts on the matter. I have put off upgrading the firmware because I was worried that the messages would show all the time after the uprade.
FYI I am in the US and the 5500 was never marketed here.

Well, it looks to me like you've fallen into the "make the time dimension dense" mistake (which Oracle often helps to propagate - a lot of their documentation says to make the time dimension dense).
Looking at your numbers, I see the following. First off, for every combination of I, R, and S you'll be creating 131 buckets of data (because you have 131 weeks, and you've made the time dimension dense). You say that there are about 11 million IR combos, so I'll take a guess that the number of IRS combos (which defines how many tuples your composite has) is somewhere around 30 million (this is a complete guess - can you tell us exactly how many IRS combos are in your fact table)?
Based on reserving 30 million IRS tuples * 131 dense weeks, your cube is going to size out to be 4 BILLION CELLS LARGE.
Another way to look at this - assume my guess of 30 million IRS tuples is correct. Based on the fact you have about 100 million rows in your fact table, that means that each IRS tuple, on average, only has data for 3 weeks. However, you're reserving space for 131 weeks by making time dense. This not only kills performance from a size standpoint, but ties up the aggregation engine doing (literally) billions of calculations on empty cells.
I'd try again with compressed composites, but put ALL 4 dimensions in the composite. This should make your final cube size roughly 44 times smaller, and make the solve finish roughly 44 times faster (131 / 3).
Hope this helps!

  • Specific questions about a RAM upgrade to 4GB on my MBP

I have a MBP model MA895LL/A. Currently populated with the original memory (2GB)
Recent clean install of Snow Leopard, with all current updates.
    Specific questions:
What memory does Apple use in their laptops? Does it really matter if you get the same manufacturer for complete compatibility?
Do timings matter? Will faster timing improve performance slightly, or is it a waste of money to go for the faster stuff on my specific model (Intel Core 2 Duo T7500)
Best to populate with 2 sticks X 2?
Finally, how about manufacturers? Anyone have any positive experiences with specific manufacturers, or, horror stories they can share?
I guess I just want to buy the best memory for my MBP. I build my own PCs, but I'm not sure if the Mac is a little more picky, RAM wise. Cost isn't really a factor. I'm willing to spend a little more, and buy the right stuff, and only do it once, without the hassle of sending it back, etc.
Any advice would be great. I know its possible this question has been answered many times before. I guess I don't know where to look...

Uh, yes, this is asked just about every day, like here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2154109&tstart=0
Using the "Search Category" box in the upper right works.
To answer your questions, since you likely have the 2 slots filled with 1GB DIMMs, you need to get a pair of 2GB to max the RAM. I guess you could use 1 OEM stick and one 2GB stick for 3GB total, but I would just go for 4GB. If you are under warranty, save the original RAM, as Apple seems to dislike seeing any 3rd party RAM no matter what. Put the OEM RAM back in if you need warranty work.
I've seen several brands OEM, a lot of Hynix and Samsung, but it is probably all well tested to Apple spec. Otherwise, brands mean nothing, but see the above linked thread. I prefer to go with the exact spec'd RAM myself. I believe "faster" RAM does not run any faster. Vendors mentioned in the linked thread all have selector aids to find the exact RAM for your model.

  • End of contract questions (Data plan and upgrade eligibility)

    Hi All,
I found another thread also titled "End of contract questions" and it was very helpful but I want to make sure I'm not mistaken in any way.  Here's my scenario:
    2 Line Plan
    ME (primary): 2-year contract, unlimited Data (10/15/10 - 10/15/12)
    WIFE: 1-year contract, unlimited data (10/15/10 - 10/15/11)
I signed her up for a 1-year contract on the advice of the Verizon rep that was helping us.  It ended up netting an additional cost of $70-100 (I forget exactly) but it was worth it in my opinion because I knew that one of us would be able to get a new phone in 1 year as opposed to 2.
So here are the specific questions:
    1.  Verizon has done away with 1-year contracts.  This means that whenever my wife goes in to renew her contract (and get a new device), she will need to sign a 2 year contract, correct?  All further questions will be posed based on a "yes" answer to this one.
    2.  Assuming she has to sign a 2-year contract, will she still be able to retain her unlimited data plan?
    3.  Assuming she signs up for a 2-year contract, will she still be able to get "loyalty" pricing or whatever they're calling it now (used to be "new every 2")?  Is she even eligible for anything since she's not the primary on the line?
    4.  In the other thread titled "End of contract questions..." it was mentioned that "The loyalty discount expires 6 months after it becomes available -- so 2 months after your contract ends".  Is this correct?
    5.  Currently, if I go to MyVerizon and hover over the "?" next to my number and "Eligible for a discount" it says:  "You are eligible to upgrade with discounted pricing. If you upgrade on or after 6/15/12 you are eligible to receive an additional loyalty discount. "  I intend to wait for my line as it still has a year on the contract however when I do the same for my wife's line it says:  You are eligible to upgrade with discounted pricing."  Does it not mention the Loyalty discount because it's not applicable to a secondary line?  Or perhaps because it's implied since she's technically out of her contract period?
I'm trying to make heads or tails of this.  At the time, it sounded like a great idea (her on a 1-year, me/primary on a 2-year).  I'm hoping it will work out for us so that every year, one of us will be eligible for a new line.  I'm only concerned with the unlimited data aspect being that she's going to be going from a 1-year to a 2-year and also the actual loyalty/discount aspect.
Thanks in advance for anyone who helps!!

Yes, either a 2yr contract or no contract and pay full retail price of the phone.
    2.  Assuming she has to sign a 2-year contract, will she still be able to retain her unlimited data plan? Yes, if she upgrades from smartphone to smartphone.

Not eligible because she is 1)not the primary line and 2)1yr contracts weren't eligible in the first place.

  • Questions on previous Yosemite upgrade posts

I had the following questions on previous Yoemite upgrade posts:
    1.  how do you acquire and make a bootable thumb drive installer?
    2.  how do you boot the system in safe mode?
    3.  what applications and versions of these are Yosemite compatible?
    4.  if an upgrade is required how do you get it?  I realize that this will be application dependent?

  • Specific question on seek

Ok here is a specific question unlike my previous one.
If i store records with a fixed record length something like :
    RandomAccessFile file = new RandomAccessFile("example.txt","rw");
long pos = inputLong("Type the record number for saving the data:");I am using the "pos" to give my record a location. Thus searching for a record i would use something like
file.seek(50*pos);My question is, here to locate a record i must know its pos number before hand, is it possible to locate a record with letters instead of a number?

I believe by pos he means "index" or "recordnumber" (i.e. each "record" is 50 bytes long, fixed-width and pos is really which of these records/items he wishes to retrieve).
As far as locating them with letters, that depends. If you simply wish to find a record that contains specific letters, then you will have to read each record and then check if it contains those letters. If, on the other hand, each record has a "key" (i.e. the first two letters of each record must be unique) then you can read through the entire file when you initially access it and create a hashmap containing these keys and there "position" or "index". Then, when the user says give me AZ, you simply retrieve the "index" from the hashmap and read the corresponding record.
Edit: That example I gave you in your ":( Help" thread does exactly this second option.

Apple ID has my old email address. It will not allow me to change the address and will not accept my password or ID questions.   I recently upgraded to OSX Yosemite 10.10.1.  I also have an Apple ID that works with iTunes and would like to keep it as my primary.

To change the iCloud ID on your devices you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted (if using iOS 7), then sign back in with your current ID.
If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, you will have to temporarily recreate it in order to delete the existing account.  To do this, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • Very specific question about iOS 7 and podcasts

I have a very specific question regarding the playback of podasts under iOS 7.
Right now, I've still got iOS 5.1.1 (iPhone 4S).
What I would like to have is a way to play an episode from a podcast that I have not yet finished, and when I double-click the ear-bud's middle button, then I would like to jump (skip) to the episode in the list, even if that episode is from a different podcast.
Right now, under iOS 5.1.1, I achieved that by creating a smart playlist in iTunes that collects all the episodes from all podcasts with a play count == 0.
This smart playlist is mirrored to the iPhone.
    It works very well.
It seems to me that something like that is not possible under iOS 6, so I skipped that.
My question now is whether I can acheive this under iOS 7.
I would be most grateful if some kind soul could shed some light on that for me.
    Best,
    Gabriel.

    Hi Larry,
Thanks very much for posting a reply.
I do absolutely intend to print a test copy first - but thanks to your advice at least know the spine is going to be ok!
I didn't realize that method would give me a nice landscape image of the unbound cover - I'd mistakenly remembered that it gave only one page at a time for front and back.
    Thanks for helping out.
    Best,

  • Specific Questions Multiple Routers *HELP*

I have a few specific questions regarding multiple routers in one home.
    1. Would it be possible to have (2) verizon supplied routers such as Actiontecs working in one home over Coax? to be more specific i would like one router in one room of the house connected to coax and providing hardwired/wireless. and another of the same type in a different room doing the same.
an installer told me something to the effect that there would be wireless interference between the two. my next question is if I am able to have two routers connected over coax. could I log in to one and Set Wireless to OFF? thus eliminating wireless interference? if not what would be the issue? could i use a non-verizon supplied router (which i understand there is no support for) ? could i use a Wired router?
there is no wireless coverage issue here. simply personal preference. i need the ability to hardwire systems without running cable around the house ie:cat5 from router to another room.no wireless bridges or other configurations.
these routers are excellent in features and performance and having a second would be nice.
my last resort option would be to connect the router to my GE smartconnection center that i have in my home. coax to router router to cat5e thus braodcast throughout the house depending where i choose. this is my last resort since it is a steel enclosure and would hinder wireless performance.

Check out this website. It has all the different network configurations, along with the pro's and con's of each set up.
    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/verizonfios/3.0_Networking
You can also set up the wireless to adhoc mode, which will allow you to connect the second router to the first wirelessly and extend your network without running cable to the other end of the house.

  • PSC 500 won't print yellow (a few specific questions)

I have tried installing a brand new cartridge, cleaning the connections, etc.  The most common suggestion I've found is that I have two bad or "old" cartridges (manufactured in Puerto Rico, April 2007).  Before I go buy another costly cartridge, I have a few questions:
    1) I colored an entire sheet of paper yellow in Word, then printed it.  The printer just spat it out without even pretending to print anything on it.  Does this in itself suggest either a printer or cartridge problem?
    2) I recently installed a new black cartridge (a remanufactured or refilled one from simplyink.com--yes, I know that's not recommended), and I'm sure I haven't tried to print anything in color since then (until today).  Could an issue with the black cartridge possibly affect the color cartridge?
    3) Regrettably, I can't say for CERTAIN that I've printed in color with the current cartridge; I can't remember when I installed it, but I'm ALMOST sure that I have.  This is another reason that I suspect something internal happened and it's not just the cartridge.  I hope I'm wrong, or that there's a fix that doesn't involve taking the old beast into a repair shop.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Okay, trying to figure out why no one will even look at this...I read the first sticky, so in case this helps in the etiquette department: I have searched, and haven't found answers to these specific questions.  My operating system is Vista, and my printer is connected via serial port.  I think I have done everything that's suggested.  Please, can anyone give me a hand here?

  • Can you link specific questions to list variables where it pops up choices depending on the question?

If i am asking a specific question for example:
Alpha Sector, then if Alpha Sector was selected then you must list what POSITION on ALPHA work is being performed.
    Alpha = Alpha Position 1
                Alpha Position 2
                Alpha Position 3
                Alpha Position 4
Alpha Position 5 , then depending on which of these are selected, it also has another question as well. What will be the FREQUENCY on that SPECIFIC POSITION.
Say that Alpha was SELECTED, then work is being performed on ALPHA Position 1, then another popup here should allow another question to be answered: What is the FREQUENCY for ALPHA Position 1 ? then once this was asked if Alpha Position 2 was also SELECTED, then go through the same above ROUTINE.
Alpha = Alpha Position 2 was also selected, then another popup here should allow another question to be answered: What is the FREQUENCY for ALPHA Position 2 ? and SO ON.
How is this accomplished? Would i have to create new pages then link to them or what?
Please help, feel free to call or email me direct.
    Thank you,

Thanks for your suggestions, Magnus, you really have had a good think for me - I appreciate that!
What I am doing is report writing in which 90% of the report is the same for everyone. Except the cover page with Name and Address details, and Report title; the initial section which is the same for everyone except for specifics such as amount to invest, reason for investment, term to invest over, things like that.
The end of the report is the recommendations section which is where I use freetext to create a bespoke solution - this cannot be automated.
Just automating the cover page and the intro section save me huge amounts of time which I can then use on research and fund analysis, leaving the principles of investment section pretty much the same for everyone, as here I'm describing the principle and theory.
After I created this Report Template my average report creation time went down from about 3 to 4 hours, to about 45 minutes. I guess the automation itself doesn't save as much time as the templating does, but it allows me to concentrate on the important bit and not worry if I have left something out - or in - that changes the overall thrust of the report.
I cannot load Lotus WorpPro on Parallels, nor on Virtual PC, so the lack of automation really is a pain here. I see it as a weakness of Apple products for business, as I am sure Microsoft do which is why they have dropped VBA support for Office 2008.
I have got NeoOffice as well as OpenOffice for Mac on my system, but really they aren't atable enough to use, and the formatting is pretty flaky. It certainly isn't completely consistent with Office itself.
So, I am left with the conclusion that progress only means a reduction in features!
    But maybe I'm missing something?

  • Two specific questions on how Aperture handles the iPhoto library

    Hi,
I've not been able to find an answer to this online. I have a few thousand photos in iPhoto. I'm happy with how they're organised, appear on my iPhone/Apple TV etc. However, some of them need a little improvement above what iPhoto's tools can offer.
If I access the iPhoto library from within Aperture and edit a photo:
    - Will the file appear as normal the next time I start iPhoto, but reflecting the edits I've done in Aperture ?
    - Will it leave an original copy in the iPhoto library structure, and put a new 'modified' file in the iPhoto library?
If not, what is the easiest way to achieve my aims? In particular I'd like to preserve the original date, time and location the photos were taken.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

    Matt
    No and No.
    In more details:
    - Will the file appear as normal the next time I start iPhoto,
    Yes... but
...reflecting the edits I've done in Aperture ?
No. Like iPhoto Aperture is a Database and can only "see" and "process" photos that have been imported to it. So there's no option to "open" a photo, just one to "import". Once imported and edited or processed you would need to export to the desktop and import to iPhoto as a new image.
Will it leave an original copy in the iPhoto library structure,
Yes, Importing is copying, not moving...
and put a new 'modified' file in the iPhoto library?
No. This is perhaps the biggest difference between the two apps. When iPhoto edits a pic is preserves the original by making a copy in the "Modified" folder. When Aperture performs the same task it records your decisions in the database and applies them live each time you view the pic. There is no "modified" file, only the original and a record in the database.
For the kind of operation you are describing you require an external editor for iPhoto. In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    _[The Gimp|http://www.gimp.org/macintosh>_ also free
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    [Pixelmator|http://www.pixelmator.com> ($60 approx.)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
These will work in precisely the way you describe.
    Regards

  • General and specific questions on the applicability of Sun Studio 11

Hi. In an e-mail letter from Sun Microsystems I read about Sun Studio 11 to "utilize its record-setting parallelizing compilers." From this message I was attracted by the possibility of adding something like parallel processing, not by changing the processor (hardware), but by adding Sun-Studio-11 software to a Linux operating system. Now I already have a Fortran compiler, the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux, which is free and can handle Cray-style pointers, a feature hard to find in a free Fortran compiler.
1a. So for the most basic of questions, without having parallel-processing hardware, just an ordinary processor [a 1-GigaHertz (GHz) Advanced MicroDevices Duron central processing unit, in my case], is it possible to have parallel processing and thereby increase one's computing speed by installing Sun Studio 11 in a Linux operating system?
1b. If so, by what factor could one expect the speed of computation to increase over not having Sun Studio 11 installed? (If the gain in speed is dependent on the type of computations being performed, I imagine possibly using a Fortran code to perform numerical calculations using and perhaps searching for minima or maxima in a two-or-more-dimensional surface. So please give me an idea of the sort of gain in speed one could expect for these two types of activites, calculations using formulas and searches for minima and maxima among already-computed quantities.)
1c. Again if so, how could one just by adding software have parallel processing without two or more hardware processors? In other words, what is the basic working principle of the software to make the simultaneous performance of multiple tasks (multitasking or parallel processing) possible?
2a. Does Sun Studio 11 include a Fortan compiler?
2b. If so, must one use it to have parallel processing with Sun Studio 11?
2c. Or will the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux work with Sun Studio 11 to have a parallel processing capability?
Concerning hardware requirements I read that Sun Studio 11 requires a minimum of 512 MegaBytes (MB) of memory, presumably Random Access Memory (RAM). My Hewlett-Packard, ZE1110, Pavilion, notebook computer has 256 MB of RAM, but is expandable to a maximum of 512 MB of RAM. So in this respect it is in principle at least technically possible for me to meet the minimum system requirement for Sun Studio 11 with my computer, if I choose to increase its RAM. Somehow accommodating the cost of such a RAM addition, including whether one may have to buy two, matching, 256-MB RAM modules or just presumably one additional 256-RAM module, is another requirement. But before spending money for such an upgrade, one should first thoroughly investigate other matters to determine if other things are going to work and to determine what gain, if any, one could expect in computing speed with Sun Studio 11 and an additional 256 MB of RAM; then decide, based on such data, whether the purchase is personally worth the money or not. That's one motivation behind this posting; another motivation is for me to learn some things.
Lastly I would like to here thank whoever was thoughtful enough to provide the Sun Download Manager (SDM) 2.0, which allows the pausing and resumption of the 207-MB download studio11-lin-x86.tar.bz2 for the Linux version of the Sun Studio 11! Using a slow, dialup, Internet connection like mine having a maximum speed of 28.8 kilobits/second, this makes it possible to download that file over a number of Internet sessions instead of having to have an uninterrupted, 19-or-more-hour Internet session. Besides the invconvenience of tying up one's telephone line for that long a time, it might be even be difficult to have such an uninterrupted Internet session for that long a time. I have at least started such a download using the SDM 2.0 potentially over multiple Internet sessions. Whether or not I carry it out to completion could depend on whether everything looks good with Sun Studio 11 for my particular situation. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for both of your postings here. I'm mostly trying to learn something here.
From Maxim Kartashev: "For example, if one thread (or process, or lwp) frequently performs an I/O operation, then the other thread (process, lwp) can utilize processor resources to perform, say, some computations while first one waits for operation to complete."
I think I might understand what you meant above. I guess lwp in the above context stands for light-weight process. And I think you may be talking about a potential gain in speed with just one, ordinary processor. I guess you meant that one program, or perhaps group of programs, could perform input/output processes at the same time it is performing calculations because different parts of the processor are being used in these two groups of processes. Then on "while first one waits for operation to complete" I guess you meant that if the input/output operations finish before the computations finish, then thread 1 that was performing the input/output operations will have to wait until the current computations ordered by thread 2 are complete before thread 1 can utilize the computational resources for its own computations; i.e., two threads can't use the same computational resources of an ordinary processor at the same time. How is my thinking so far, Maxim, right, partly right, or all wrong?
Now if the above thinking of mine is right, then it appears that one could have some gain in speed doing things like you suggest with just one, ordinary processor. And if so, I imagine that the gain could be a maximum of a factor of two for a program that requires spending as much time in input and output as it does in computation; i.e., keeping both the computational and input/output resources working all of the time without the input/output resources waiting on the computational resources or vice versa. How is my thinking here?
If the above thinking is correct, just for purposes of discussion with just one, ordinary processor, not a dual processor, and a program which does nothing but computations there would be no gain in speed using Sun Studio 11 and a Fortran compiler over not using Sun Studio 11. In other words, to increase the speed of computation one would have to buy a faster computer, buy parallel processing hardware for an existing computer and use parallel-processing software, or somehow figure out how to harness two or more computers to work for you at the same time with instructions from one piece or perhaps set of pieces of code set up for parallel processing using two or more different computers. The latter case would be a computer analogue or "two 'heads' are better than one," not human heads, but computers. How is my thinking here?
Here I am still assuming that it is possible for one processor to be used to do two different kinds things at once. However, I don't see how one Fortran program could instruct two things to be done at once. This is because I have not seriously studied parallel processing, I suppose. That is I am used to a sequential set of instructions that proceed from top to botton down the lines of code; i.e., one instruction or line of code can't be executed until the line of code before it has been completely executed. That is the computing "world" with which I am familiar. So how about someone here teaching me with an example of parallel-processing Fortran code how parallel processing works, explaining what instruction or group of instructions tells the computer to execute input and computational instructions at the same time?
Based on the encouraging information from one or more other people I have been able to use the Intel Fortran for Linux 8.1.024, if I remember correctly, in a computer with a 1-GigaHertz (GHz), Advanced MicroDevices (A.M.D.), Duron Processor. So this is at least one case where it is not essential to have an Intel processor to use the Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux 8.1.024.
Is the Sun Fortran compiler free for personal use? And can it handle Cray-style pointers?
