5th Generation with 3rd Generation Dock

Hi,
I tried to copy my music library onto my new video iPod using my 3rd generation dock. I get an error message stating that the iPod doesn't support Firewire. Is this true? Do I need to buy a new dock or will I have to continue using the 1.1 USB connection to transfer and update the iPod?
Thanks!
lsb

"I tried to copy my music library onto my new video iPod using my 3rd generation dock. I get an error message stating that the iPod doesn't support Firewire. Is this true?"
Yes it's true, the 5th gen iPod does not support data transfer via firewire, but it will charge the iPod.
Data transfer is now only via USB.
The dock shouldn't make any difference though. Aside from the fact that the 5th gen iPod does fit correctly, you should be able to use the dock.

  • Replacing 1st Gen dock connector with 3rd Gen dock connector?

The dock connector on my 1st Gen iPod Touch has stopped working, and i have an old 3rd Gen iPod Touch lying around that appears to be broken beyond repair. Provided that a simple cleaning will not clear up the problem, will swapping the 3rd Gen's dock connector for the 1st Gen's be possible?
Since the male end of the cord is universal throughout models, i am assuming that the only problem might be to get the thing to fit.
But if any other potential problems may exist it would be helpful to know about them, before i take this thing apart.
I don't intend on spending any money on this iPod, as i am getting an iPhone as soon as possible. This is simply meant to be a temporary fix since i have no other portable music player at the moment.

The screws appear to be in the same place however, and the 3rd gen metal housing appears more compact than the 1st gen housing.
So there may be a spacing issue if you are trying to put the 1st gen into the 3rd gen, but not the other way around.
A potenial problem would be with the connections to the logic board. It would be helpful if anyone knows the specifics. Maybe i'll look up the company etched into the housing.
Thanks for the links by the way, they look useful if i it ends up working.
Edit: Actually, i have no clue what is holding the 1st gen's connector on. In the place of screws it appears they have some sort of pins. That may prove to be an issue

  • Problem using docking station with ipod 5th generation

just bought an ipod touch, 5th generation, with the Lightening connector. Bought an Acoustic solutions docking station with the same small lightening connector but when I dock I can only charge the ipod and not play music through the docking station. Does anyone have same problems playing music with a 5th generation ipod that has the new small lightening connector?...I bumped into someone at Argos who said they are having the same problem not being able to play music from the new iphone 5 that has the lightening connector and even if you use a adaptor to make it 30 pin connector compatable it still doesnt work, any help will be appreciated, thanks

Does Acoustic Solutions say it will work with your model iPod and iOS 7.0.4?

    Sometimes this works
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
Sometimes an iOS updates breaks compatibility and yo will have to wait for iOS update or an update to the dock's firmware.

  • Does anyone know when they will be making iHomes with 8 pin docks (to work with the iPhone 5 and iTouch 5th Generation)?

It has been almost six months now since the iPhone 5 and the iTouch 5th Generation were released and I am still unable to find new iHomes with the 8 pin docks.  I refuse to buy the adaptor because it will be too unstable on my current iHome but I also refuse to buy a more stable iHome with the old dock.  Does anyone know if/when they will be releasing iHomes explicitly for the iPhone 5 and the iTouch 5th generation?

I doubt anyone here will have any information about what iHome's plans are. Try contacting them here:

i guess you could put the aiport utility app on your iphone, click on the aiport express there, it will show you how many devices are connected to it and the mac addresses of those devices.

  • IPod Classic 5th generation will not sync with new MacBook

I have had a 5th generation iPod classic that I have been super happy with.  I have used it with several PC laptops.  Because I have gone through so many PC's, I decdied this year to get a new MacBook Pro.  Since my old PC was dying it took forever to get all my music and videos transferred to my new MacBook. Anyhow, I have had no luck syncing my iPod with my new MacBook.  I have read several other posts (but mostly older like 2007-2010) that others have had similar problems.  Here is a quick list of what I have done/what has happened:
Initially, I would get one of two messages:
'The ipod '(My Name) ipod' cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-124)'
    - 'The ipod '(My Name) ipod' cannot be synced. The required folder cannot be found.'
Two times it told me I needed to use a USB 2.0 port (but I have a new MacBook and was using the newer 3.0 port).  I haven't seen that message since.
It actually "transferred" over 4500 of my 7000 items (I have a ton of music that I use for my job) and then just stopped. When it was disconnected only about 200 songs were actually on my iPod.
    I've restored it several times.
Seems to "freeze" on random songs or videos and will not continue to sync, even theough the iPod says it's syncing.  Then iTunes freezes.  I have to "force quit." Sometimes (but not all the time) if I try to re-open iTunes, I get a message that says iTunes is locked.
I thought maybe my cable was bad (it was the original that came with the iPod).  I actually spent $20 and got a new one.  No luck.
With the new cord iTunes now gets frozen on the 3rd or 4th song it is trying to transfer. Once I disconnect the iPod (I have to disconnect with ejecting because iTunes is frozen and it also freezes up Finder to eject) my iPod makes an awful click sound and I have to start it by toggling and then holding the play/pause button.
I have tried enabling disk, manually controlling music, etc. but nothing helps.
I am sick about it because I rely on my iPod a lot for my job-- and I can't afford a new one since I just bought a MacBook.  I think it has something to do with the fact that I got this new MacBook.  My old PC was getting so sensitive that I didn't download the latest version of iTunes (but I still had the second latest version).
    Any help is appreciated.

Although you used the new USB 3.0 port, the actual connection speed is still USB2.0, as the iPod Dock connector, does not have the 10 times faster USB3.0 signal pins, the connection speed is still 480Mbits/s
I assumed that you have tried the other USB 2.0 port to no success..
Can you do the iPod Disk diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but helps in troubleshooting.
    Have a nice day!

  • Anyone else having WiFi problems with the IPod Touch 5th Generation?

I upgraded my old IPod Touch 3rd Generation to a 5th Generation yesterday. I've noticed however that for some reason the wi-fi connection on the 5th Generation drops off all of a sudden for no reason at all and I can't figure out why. Anyone else having similar problems? If so what did you do?

Does the iPod connect OK to other networks?
Does the iPod see the network?
    Any error messages?
Do other devices now connect OK?
    Did the iPod connect before?
If only your network then it could be a problem with your network
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router

  • IPod Click Wheel games compatible with ipod nano 5th Generation

I've found the iPod Click Wheel Games by clicking the triangle that appears next to the "App Store" tab and clicking the third option, "iPod Click Wheel Games." But when I look at the details of any of the games it says they are compatible with:
"This game is compatible with iPod nano (3rd and 4th generation), iPod classic, and iPod (5th generation) only. It cannot be played on your computer, nor is it compatible with other iPod models or iPhone."
Does this mean that I cannot use them on my iPod nano 5th generation? or is the iPod nano being referred to as "iPod (5th generation)"
I guess it just seems silly that a game is only compatible with older versions or that the newest iPod nano can NOT operate older games.
Can anyone explain this? or has anyone tried to download one of these iPod Click Wheel Games and found that it actually Does work for an iPod nano 5th generation?

    Can anyone explain this?

  • My ipod 5th generation charges when connected to my PC but not recognised in itunes with windows 8.1

Why is my ipod 5th generation not recognised in itunes in windows 8.1?Connection to my PC only charges the battery.

Did this iPod previously work with this computer (running Windows 8.1), and does not now for some reason?  Or is this the first time (or the first time with Windows 8.1)?
The fact that only the battery charging symbol appears on the iPod screen seems to indicate that the iPod does not recognize a data connection.  It's like you are connecting the iPod to USB (wall) power adapter.  It is likely that the Windows system also does not see the iPod as a connected device; you should confirm by looking at Device Manager.
You should rule out a faulty USB docking cable.  The dock connector has separate connection points for power and data, so it is possible for it to connect to charge the battery but not connect for data.  So, if possible, try another docking cable, or try the cable you have with another Apple device.
You should rule out a problem on the USB port.  If you connect something else to the same port, does it work properly?  Preferably, you should use something similar, like a USB flash drive or port-powered external drive, and try copying over some large files.
If the USB port and docking cable are OK, the cause is more likely to be on the iPod (such as a dock connector that is worn out from use).

  • I think the dock on my 5th generation ipod nano is broken. Is there a way that i could fix this?

Every time I try to connect my 5th generation ipod Nano to my computer I get a message that says that the device is unrecognizable. I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling itunes and I have tried most everything else the Apple Support says to do. I checked my devices on my computer when I had the ipod connected and it said that there was some type of problem with the USB dock on my ipod. other than this I have not had any other problems with this ipod. Is there any way I can fix this without having to get anew ipod?

  • Conflicting information regarding onboard RAM with 5th generation (buffer)

I've been trying to do some research on this because I'm looking to upgrade my 3rd generation to either a Nano 8GB or IPOD 5th generation.
    1. My 3rd generation IPOD has 32 megs of RAM. That seems to get me through about 21-24 minutes of music while jogging before it freezes.
    2. I'm seeing on this site and others that the new 5th generation has 64 megs of RAM on the 80 Gig (thus doubling my running time?) but still 32 megs of Ram on the 30 Gig.
    Here's where my confusion starts..
The Apple Store and the MY APPLE tech support say the skip protection hasn't changed over previous models and that it's still around 25 minutes of skip protection.
If the 80 Gig really does provide 64 megs for music skip protection, then I'll get the IPOD with video. Plus I like the ability to play games and watch videos. I'm just not sure if this 64 megs of RAM is used for other purposes like album art, etc.
If it doesn't use all 64 megs for skip protection, then I'll get the 8 Gig Nano since my primary function will be to listen to music while jogging.
    Any words of wisdom?

The 80 GB Model of iPod Video contains 64 MB of RAM that it uses for everything. It does not preload album art, so the music may start before the album art is loaded. It puts music playback as No. 1 priority, so the music always loads completely before everything else.
iPod nano's however, will never freeze and are much faster at loading as they don't have hard drives. There all solid state.
I own an 80 GB model and I have never had any pauses what so ever.

  • Recommendations for speaker/charge dock for new iPod Nano 5th generation 8g

I have searched and searched for a speaker/charging combo dock for my new iPod Nano 5th generation 8gb player. None of them specifty they work with this latest iPod version.
    Any recommendations?

I think I have the same question more or less. I bought a cheap Best Buy memorex speaker docking station and I need a male to female IPOD cable so that I can Play the radio and charge the IPOD at the same time as well of course have the head phone jack plugged into the Line In that acts as the antenna.
So if I had the Male to Female cable My dock would charge and the cable to the line in acts as a Antenna. I think this makes sense..

  • My ipod nano 4/5th generation goes black whenever i take it off my docking station?

i just bought new docking station for my ipod nano 4th/5th generation but when i take my ipod off the docking station it goes black. the docking station plays my music from the ipod, gets radio and does everything very well but when i take the ipod off, its like the ipod has no charge, even though when its on the docking station it says it has full battery ? please help!

    Hey lissylouxxx,
Thanks for the question. That definitely sounds frustrating, we'll need to isolate the issue further to determine if there is indeed a hardware issue with the device. Does the same behavior occur after charging the iPod with the included wall/usb charger?
I highly recommend visiting the Support page for the iPod nano (4th and 5th generation), and specifically running through the troubleshooting assistant:
