6 minute delay on mutex_exit?

I'm seeing some very odd behavior on mutex_exit(). The man page gives the impression that calling mutex_exit() will schedule another process that might be waiting on that mutex, and that's fine, for the purposes of my driver. When I added some timing code, however, I noticed that mutex_exit() sometimes takes a very, very long time to complete.
Here's my debug code (pretty straightforward stuff):
     hrtime_t start1, end;
     start1 = gethrtime();
     mutex_exit(&ctlr->lock);
     end1 = gethrtime();
     if(end1 - start1 > (NANOSEC)) {     /* 1 sec */
          cmn_err(CE_WARN, "mutex_exit took %u ms", (end1 - start1)/1000000);
Here's the message that prints out when the odd behavior occurs:
mutex_exit took 386565 ms
The system is continuing to function (apparently normally) during this time. Anybody ever see anything like this? Any ideas about what it might be?

hrtime_t is a 64-bit "long long" type, but you print the 64-bit expression "(end1 - start1)/1000000" using a
32-bit unsigned format.
What happens when you change the cmn_err to use a 64-bit format?
cmn_err(CE_WARN, "mutex_exit took %llu ms", (end1 - start1)/1000000);

  • Why is autolock code always required even when 15 minute delay is set?

    Although I set a 15 minute delay in PREFERENCES, my iPad Mini asks for the AUTOLOCK CODE when I open the cover a moment after closing it. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

    You have the iPad cover lock/unlock preference set to "on". This causes the iPad to go into lock mode the second you close the cover. If you leave the cover open then your iPad will wait for 15 minutes to lock. You can turn off the lock when you close the cover by going to Settings->General and turning the iPad cover lock/unlock to off.

  • Workspace 4 Minutes delay while running first report of the session

    Hi Techies,
    We are facing a strange issue in Workspace. When the user logs in to workspace and tries runs first report it nearly takes 4 or 5 minutes to bring up the POVs or Prompts. After this 4 minutes delay any subsequent action on reports is faster.
    But when the user logs off and log back in we are facing the same delay. Looks like this problem is there for every session.
    Any insight on this issue will be highly helpful
    Thanks
    With Regards,
    Rajkumar

    I am experiencing the same issue with a system 9.3 implementation. The issue occurs in Workspace only, not within the Financial Reporting Studio. That is making me think it is more of a web/application server issue. I have not been able to resolve, but any help would be appreciated.

    Sign up for Google's paid Apps for Business service, you can then set things up using Exchange & you'll get push using Gmail. Otherwise, you can't get push using Gmail.

  • 16 minute delay from BOOT_TIME to kernel: PMAP: PCID enabled.

    I'm running a MBP (late 2011) with 16 GB RAM and OSX 10.8.5.
    Recently, boot times have extended to roughly 20 minutes.  The most relevant Console message would appear to be:
    2014-10-19 11:52:31.000 AM bootlog[0]: BOOT_TIME 1413733951 0
    2014-10-19 12:08:49.000 PM kernel[0]: PMAP: PCID enabled
    2014-10-19 12:08:49.000 PM kernel[0]: Darwin Kernel Version 12.5.0: Sun Sep 29 13:33:47 PDT 2013; root:xnu-2050.48.12~1/RELEASE_X86_64
    2014-10-19 12:08:49.000 PM kernel[0]: vm_page_bootstrap: 3866919 free pages and 294617 wired pages
    Note the 16 minute delay at the first step.
    In previous versions of the OS I seem to recall that re-boots could get trapped into verifying all the RAM before proceeding with the boot.  Are there specific codes in the PRAM or SCM that trigger a RAM check on start-up?
    Occasionally (once a month with no discernible pattern) I'll get a three beep RAM error but it disappears on restart.  Testing with TechTool Pro reveals no RAM issues. Does this error message set a flag for a RAM check on future start-ups?
    Any help would be appreciated
    Malcolm

    Thanks for the reply Ogelthorpe.
    I ran TechTool Pro and it was able to test 12 GB of the 16 GB of RAM.  It tested OK.   I'm pretty sure that I do have an intermittent RAM issue but if it only happens every month or so, I can work around it for a while.
    I'm more concerned about the 20 minute start-up. Before rooting around in the MBP innards (my model doesn't allow easy RAM access) I'd like to ascertain if something else is going on. I seem to recall that there was a parameter in the boot arguments that controlled the RAM test during start up.  The boot arguments can be changed in the Terminal with a command like:
    sudo nvram boot-args=
    where "-v" equals Verbose, "-x" equals Safe mode, etc.
    Apparently, there are also some preferences stored in "com.apple.Boot.plist".  I notice that I have a newer document in the same location as "com.apple.Boot.plist" labelled "com.apple.Boot.plist~orig". Both documents have dates that precede when the problems started.
    Any thoughts?

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 GPO Loginscript is executed with more than 2 minutes delay after login

    Hi everybody
    A strange problem came up in a new Windows Active Directory Domain (one single DC with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials): after configuring a User GPO with a Powershell Loginscript and applying the GPO to an User OU, the following happens:  when a
    User logs into a PC or Server, the Loginscript does not run within the first 120 - 150 seconds, and then suddenly the Scripts runs and completes within seconds. What could be the reason for such a long delay?
    When I run the Powershell Script manually it runs immediately and finishes within seconds. But assigned through a GPO it takes really long to run. I also tried a very "simple" Loginscript with only one command (map a network share) - but this Script
    also runs with a long delay. So the script does not seem to be the problem but the Logon Procedure. I even tried the same script with a locally defined GPO on a Windows Server 2012 R2 (just to check whether it might be a NETLOGON/SYSVOL share problem), but
    no luck - it takes 2 to 3 minutes until the Script is run. I went a bit further and realized that the problem is only related to the latest OS Windows 8 (8.1) / Windows Server 2012 (R2) but not to older windows system. So what changed in the logon process
    of the new Windows versions? Why are GPO applied with a such a long delay?
    Any ideas?
    Mark

  • Newfs "hangs" for almost 30 minute delay!

    Solaris 10 11/06 on an Ultra 60 with 2x360Mhz cpus, pretty much a server install, not running much of anything yet.
    Tried to newfs a 4GB 10k rpm disk on the same bus as the boot drive, which is the same kind of disk. Newfs just hangs, and takes about 30 minutes to finish (date; newfs /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0;date -- I answered "y" to the prompt from newfs right away) .
    There happens to be a ZFS raidz volumn on drives on the other SCSI bus, not doing anything. Network interface is "down", it's not plugged in to anything.
    Anyone have any clues why this should be? Bad enough the bid delays in the format command after selecting a disk, but this is ridiculous!

    More info -- when there is no network connection, only! When I ifconfig hme0 down, newfs hangs. When I ifconfig hme0 up, newfs starts doing it's thing right away, no delay. Hme0 is plugged into an otherwise empty switch, nothing else on this system's network.
    Question is, what network dependency causes this problem with newfs? I cannot think of any good reason why newfs should care whether the network interface is up or not.
    Somebody must know something... please advise.

  • There is at least a 1 minute delay in viewing and deleting emails.

    When I hit delete for an email it is taking at least one minute to delete. Same thing when clicking on one to read. I am also getting a message that Thunderbird is not responding, but then it will start to work. I have a brand new computer and I have also tried rebooting.

  • IPad (especially iPad 2) issue with WiFi connection 1-minute delay after sleep or new connection

    This is a tip and not a question.
    I had a customer who was complaining that their iPad 2 would take about 1 minute before WiFi would work after coming out of sleep. They are on 5580 controller with 802.11n APs. If they took it home, it didn't have this issue. They also tried with iPad 1 and it didn't seem to have this problem. It was happening every time on iPad 2, wait until it goes to seep, then wait about a minute, then press home button, unlock and try to launch safari, it won't connect and wifi icon in the top bar is missing, 1 minute later wifi icon reappears and safari works. I was also able to reproduce it on iPad 1 and iPad 2 when creating new wifi connection in the settings, wifi icon wouldn't appear for about a minute.
    After some 5580 controller upgrades, trying different wireless settings, researching on google, and capturing with AirPcap, I finally figure it out.
    Once it comes back out of sleep or once the connection is created, iPad actually associates to the APs just fine and gets an IP address. You are able to ping it during that first minute of "outage" (when wifi icon is missing), but you can't use any network apps like Safari from the iPad during that minute. It turns out that right after getting IP address, iPad sends out DNS query for www.apple.com and then tries some HTTP query on  184.24.93.15 (www.apple.com). I didn't bother investigating what it's trying to do with that HTTP query, but it looks like if that TCP session is not established, you can't use wireless for about a minute. And indeed, my customer's firewall blocks HTTP traffic that's not coming from proxies. Once they opened HTTP traffic to 184.24.93.15 on the firewall, it fixed the issue, the wifi icon now appears as soon as iPad 2 comes out of sleep and Safari works. (They use it for intranet only in case you are wondering)
    Hope this helps.

    I saw on another discussion thread to shut down the hot spot (in my case my HTC Thunderbolt) for 10 seconds and then restart it.  It worked and my WiFi downloads seem to be as fast as before.  Thanks Philly_Phan.

  • Logon script delayed by 5 minutes (300 seconds)

    It appears Windows 8.1 may have a built in delay processing logon scripts of 5 minutes.  Obviously, seems how it is brand new I'm not finding an ounce of information about it anywhere.
    Basically, I have troubleshooted this problem for hours now.  It boils down to the simple fact that I have several brand new Windows 8.1 systems joined to a Server 2003 domain.  Users have a GPO applied to them that assigns a logon script that
    maps network drives and printers.  After logging in, the script does not execute until 5 minutes have passed.
    I have removed all other GPOs, eliminated all non-microsoft services and shut off all startup items.  It makes no difference of admin or limited account, roaming profiles or folder redirection makes no difference.  Looking through the event viewer
    -> Microsoft -> Group Policy I can follow the the process step by step and everything looks great.  The event log shows the policy processing and application is happening within milliseconds.  Then there is exactly a 5 minute delay down to
    the second between:
    Group Policy Winlogon Start Shell handling complete
    and
    Starting Logon script for domain\user
    Task manager confirms that wscript.exe does not run until 5 minutes after logging in.  Once wscript.exe starts the logon script is processed as normal and the drives and printers are mapped as expected.
    I do not have any Windows 8 machines at this location, but I checked another location that has very similar policies and scripting and Windows 8 processes the logon script immediately.  This issue appears isolated to Windows 8.1.
    It appears that part of Microsoft's attempt to optimize the startup and logon process of Windows they may have added a 5 minute delay before processing logon scripts.  What I need to know is why, and where is the registry key to change this.
    Thanks

    Mark Russinovich had a very good session about troubleshooting slow logins this year at Teched.  I highly recommend you try running Procmon during bootup to identify exactly why its taking so long.  In his example it was trying to access a path
    for updates that no longer existed and it waited until it timed out and then continued on.  Another example of this was an environment that was installing McAffee every time during bootup which was causing slow logons.  Its worth a shot to at least
    ensure all your policies have been applied as the event log isn't verbose enough.
    This is not my blog, nor am I affiliated, but it seemed like a good tutorial for doing this.

  • Print & Fax control panel takes 1 MINUTE to open, delays app launching too

    Hi everyone,
    This one is driving me nuts. The Print & Fax control panel takes around a minute to open even after deleting all printers. Application launching is delayed for a similar period (if the app accesses printer info on startup I presume). Has anyone experienced this before? Any tips or suggestions gratefully received...
    ~ Rodney

    Just documenting this in case any one else out there arrives at this thread with the same issue....
    Some progress. Deleting all printers, resetting the printing system and running disk repair didn't do the trick. However downloading Printer Therapy (http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/pt6/) has assisted. After restart there is still a 1 minute delay launching many applications (presumably while they try to connect to print system) but whereas this happened for every launch before, now it only happens for the first application launch. If I manually start the cupsd daemon this appears to take 1 min to start. After this everything is fine. My working theory is the issue is somehow related to cupsd. Does anyone know whether this process is normally started the first time an application connects to the printer (even though, in this case, I have no printers defined at all).
    I have no idea why cupsd is taking so long to startup, I have reset the cupsd preferences (using printer therapy) and permissions, deleted all temp files etc. Any additional suggestions/recommendations would be appreciated.

  • Are the delays in iMessage fixed in IOS 7.1 ?

    For quite some time there are discussions about delays in iMessages.
    For me (iPhone 4S, IOS 7.0.4) iMessages started to show huge (up to 45 minutes)
    delays in communication with exactly one person (iPhone 4S).
    The problems suddenly showed up and were not related with an IOS upgrade or the like.
    I had a temporary fix (cleaning memory).
    But the problem is back.
    When the messages arrive with their significant delay, they carry the time-stamp of the
    send time, but get listed at the time they arrive
    (so, if there is a message dated 10:10 and a message that was sent at 9:50
    arrives at 10:15, it shows up after the 10:10 but w time-stamp 9:50)
    I am texting to a number of phones with different IOS and with same or different carriers.
    But only w one user this problem appears to show up (same on other side).
    There are times when delivery is lightning fast for an hour or so - but I can't make
    out any regularities (times of day).
    Is there a fix for this problem in IOS 7.1.?
    The discussion boards are full with comments of users experiencing the same problem,
    worldwide and independent of carrier.
    Sincerely,
    ADAM_BERLIN

  • Adobe Reader 9.0 has delay when downloading PDF file through proxy server

    There is an issue with the Adobe Reader (and Acrobat) 9.0 PDF Link Helper ActiveX control for Internet Explorer (6 or 7) on Windows computers with respect to proxy servers. Due to this issue, there is a 2 minute delay for any Internet Explorer web browser on the Deere network before any PDF file will open from the Internet within the IE web browser if In-Place activation (Display PDF in Browser) is enabled in Adobe Reader 9. This problem does not affect Adobe Reader 8.
    What we are seeing is that when someone on the Deere network clicks on a links to a PDF file in the Internet, the PDF file downloads immediately. But then, after the PDF file is downloaded, the Adobe Reader 9 PDF Link Helper ActiveX control tries to talk directly to the Internet web site. The Adobe Reader 9 PDF Link Helper ActiveX control does not know how to negotiate our proxy server. So after a minute or two, the Adobe Reader 9 PDF Link Helper ActiveX control times out (gives up) and allows the IE browser to display the downloaded PDF file in the IE browser.
    We work around this issue by disabling In Place Activation for PDF files in IE (uncheck Display PDF in Browser). But we would like a fix for the PDF Link Helper ActiveX control.
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Originals]
    "bBrowserIntegration"=dword:00000000
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\9.0\Originals]
    "bBrowserIntegration"=dword:00000000
    Here's what our proxy people see when they do a trace of a PDF file download through their proxy server with IE 7 and Adobe Reader 9 with Display PDF in Browser checked.
    The browser tells the proxy to download the pdf, it does and sends it to the browser. Before the browser opens it something in Acrobat ( or I.E. ? ) tries to make a connection back to the content server that hosted the pdf. Unfortunately this agent does not ask the proxy to make the request for it, but rather asks local DNS to resolve the Internet server name. This request dies because our internal private network does not know anything about the Internet. Only the DNS used by the proxy can resolve Interent names. After two unsuccessful DNS queries into the private network, the agent tries to resolve the same Internet name with NBNS ( netbios name service) queries again into the private network, with the same results. These requests persists for more than two minutes ( over 200 unresolved queries ). Then for whatever reason the agent gives up and the already downloaded pdf file loads into the browser.
    I have a TCP capture file if you want it.

    Hi,
    I have the same problem with some specific PDF files. For more than 90% it hangs when opening the file, but sometimes it works (with the same file).
    The workflows where it sometimes worked:
    a) Loading the PDF, the reader is started the first time and displays license dialog.
    b) The reader was already runing and file is loaded with Drag&Drop or File/Open in the Reader
    But most times it does not load.
    I could not find out which file is missing or trying to be opened. So I tried with the CP949.TXT.
    I found no CP949.TXT in Reader 8 installation, so I took it from the link, pasted into notepad and stored in the respective directory
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Resource\TypeSupport\Unicode\Mappings\win\
    Now it seems to work fine, opening PDFs with double click from exporer.
    But why did Adobe Reader 8 not have the TypeSupport directory at all?
    Even when having found a fix (hack?), I think I did not understand the cause of this problem.

  • 30 minutes to open Itunes

    There are a lot of posts out there about how slowly itunes is loading but I have yet to find one with as much drag as mine or solutions that I haven't already tried.
    I have a 2-3 year old MacBook Pro. 2.2 GHz processor. 40 GB open on my internal hard drive out of 120 GB. I have 300 GB of music on a 500 GB external Western Digital Passport USB drive.
    The problem is that iTunes takes at least 15 minutes to open every time I use it and sometimes 30-45 minutes. From other people's posts it seems there's a lot of people dealing with 30 second delays. At this point I would be thrilled with a 5 minute delay.
    I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I've defragged, I've deleted podcasts, I have minimal apps and nothing seems to help.
    Does anybody have any input that could help me? Let me know if you need to know more system information.
    Is it simply that I have too much music (34,000 songs) for iTunes to handle?
    Thanks for your help.

    I've had this same problem for at least a year. Problem exists both on a PC desktop and laptop, the common thread is that the music is stored on an external hard drive. In my case a Buffalo network attached drive instead of USB.
    When I start iTunes I can hear it thrash that drive on load. Library is 20k songs ~124Gb. The loading is so painful that I frankly don't use iTunes anymore unless I have to shift new songs onto the phone. Otherwise I do all application searching/installing directly on the phone and music purchasing through Amazon. It's just much faster than waiting for iTunes to load.
    I've reinstalled itunes, deleted my library and rescanned, doesn't matter. Both the laptop and desktop have the issue. I've installed the separate Quicktime player just so I don't have to wait 15 minutes if I happen to want to watch a .mov stored on my PC.
    Always assumed it was an iTunes for Windows issue, but now suspect this is just poor handling of non-local harddrives.

  • Oracle 8.1.7 on RedHat 8.0 - mysterious one minute hangs - solved

    Thought I'd drop a note about a problem we faced on a multi-processor Linux box (2x 2.4GHz HT P4, SCSI RAID-0 array).
    Our program was frequently pausing for 1 minute at a time in the middle of operations, on the most innocuous queries (single-row inserts of new data, "select 1 from dual" (!), etc.). Symptom: after a burst of activity, some random query would just hang for exactly 1 minute, and then continue as if nothing had happened.
    Clue: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-oracle/2001-Oct/0023.html
    Action on my part:
    * Comment out the "mts_dispatchers" line in my init.ora and restart the DB. Problem solved.
    Probable cause, according to the note above: the listener dies, and that would explain the one-minute delay (I guess until something gets restarted).
