60p to 24p Pulldown Conversion - Best Settings?

Our studio recently purchased a new camera for some run-and-gun shooting. Unfortunately, it does not support 24p natively, only 60p & 60i. It does, however, support shutter speeds from 1/2 all the way to 1/4000. What advice can you give regarding pulldown conversion into a 24p project, both for camera settings and FCPX?
Please note that I'm looking for 1:1 speed, NOT slow-mo.

Shane, I understand the difference in motion. And as I said, it was not my intention to capture at the frame rate that I did. With regards to the slight stutteryness, I'm comparing one of these problem clips to an actual 24pN clip from an earlier part of the shoot. I put both in the 23.97 timeline, but the one captured at 60p feels like it should still run slightly smoother or with a little bit more motion blur maybe. I think I'm simply looking for the best way to cheat that "look" back into the footage.
Your post below is right. Cinema Tools is not a good option for that as this doesn't really have much to do with 2:3 3:2 pulldown type operations and it won't let me conform the footage anyway.

  • 24p Pulldown Conversion Quadrupling File Size?

I found this useful thread below describing an easy foolproof method for converting to true 24p using Compressor 3:
    http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=98411
But alas, every clip that I convert becomes five times larger in size.
218.7 MB after compressor becomes 1.2 GB
71.8 MB becomes a new file of 391.2 MB
    215 MB becomes 1.17 GB
Obviously there is more of a decompression going on here. Any Clues?

You're failing to account for how the data rate - how much space one second of video takes up - differs between the HDV codec (what FCP digitizes) and the ProRes422 HQ codec.
The data rate of your HDV clips are so much lower because it uses interframe compression. In plain english, even though there are 30 frames of video recorded to tape, not all 30 frames are complete, standalone images - they rely one other images to complete them. This makes HDV very efficient when it comes to hard drive space, but a total nightmare when it comes to post and editing.
ProRes422 HQ does not make use of interframe compression, so each second, despite containing fewer frames, does contain complete frames. ProResHQ's data rate is variable (depending on the frame size and source picture) but it is, as you've found, beefier than HDV. Much beefier.

  • VoltaicHD AVCHD conversion - best settings + keep clip information

    Hi all,
I'm using VoltaicHD to convert some .mts files. I am converting to .mov but when I import the movies to iMovie 09 the date of the clip is [today's date] not the date when it was filmed.
Is there a way for me to convert to a format that KEEPS the clips data (date, format, etc.)?
    Thanks.

Do you know the date and time that the clip was created? If so, you can name it as clip=yyyy=mm=dd hh;mm;ss.ext
    where yyyy = year
    mm = month
    dd = day
hh = hour in 24 hour time
    mm = minute
    ss = second
ext = whatever extension Voltaic assigns, for example, it could be .mov
Other than that you can set the date and time of the clip in iMovie, but by naming as above, you will be able to skim with View/Playhead Info turned on and see the correct date and time.

  • Best settings for a 15 minute 24p film to burn to DVD?

Does anyone know what are the best settings if I wish to compress a 15 minute long film that was shot and compressed at 24p and put it on a DVD?
Of course, DVD space is limited, and I need to be able to burn the file onto one DVD. Does anyone know the best setting for this while still retaining the best quality?
    Thanks,
    Michael Sirois

Use a Constant Bit Rate (CBR) of around 7.7 Mbps.
That will give the highest possible quality, shortest encoding time and maximum compatibility with DVD players.

  • DV 24p to DVD - Best compression and workflow

    Hello,
I shot my thesis film on the Panasonic DVX-100a a few years back. Ran out of money and never finished. Luckily, I have the resources to now wrap it up and have some questions about the final export to DVD workflow.
We re-digitized the film from the original tapes and rebuilt it in FCP. Cut it, had it mixed, and now ready to output it.
    What I've done thus far:
    1. Exported Quicktime movie from timeline (using project settings - DV)
    2. Opened that up with compressor, compressed to 90 min best quality
    3. Screened on plasma (looked like ***) and LCD computer monitor (looked ok)
    What I'd like to know:
    1. Is there a preferred workflow/setting to go out of FCP and onto DVD that will yield better results than what the steps I described above?
    What I was considering doing:
    1. Exporting an uncompressed or animation version from the timeline.
    2. Opening that in Compressor, bumping up the bit rate to 6, using CBR.
    3. Making beta dub to screen for interested parties.
    Original Footage:
    1. We shot Panasonic DVX-100a 24p. Super happy with the look of the film until I saw it on the plasma. I love that rough look but not when it looks like an accident.
So, any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this and potentially help my little movie.
    Best,
    Wolf

Not really; DVDs just aren't good enough for huge, progressive plasma TVs. You can certainly do a lot by keeping the bitrate high enough (but not high enough to cause problems), using a tripod, good lighting, good camera, and best settings. But it still is an interlaced, standard definition source. And of course, don't transcode to a different format when you don't have to; go from your source format to mpeg2.

  • Need advise on best settings for FCP 7!

I am looking for some advice on the best settings for FCP 7 when I am syncing sound using pluraleyes, exporting into quicktime as one file and then importing that new file into FCP 7 for editing. I have noticed that sometimes my Quicktime files are very large (20 gb) and sometimes they are much smaller (130 MB), but I never changed the settings.
I am working on FCP 7 and shot using my Panasonic GH3 at 24 fps (which comes to 23.98). My frame size is 1920x1080. Compressor is H.264. Data rate: 8.6 MB/sec. Audio rate: 48.0 KHz.  I have heard that FCP 7 does not properly deal with H.264. So, I am wondering, what should my settings be?  Should I set to "Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 24p 48 kHz"?  Is there anything I need to know when I export to Quicktime 7 Pro in order to not reduce the quality of the video? Should I be changing my video files first before I even start to work on them?
I haven't edited in almost ten years so I am desperate need of some guidance!
Final Cut Pro 7, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    Hi Shane Ross,
Thanks for your help.  So, I already synced all of my interviews in FCP 7 (using pluraleyes) before I changed the video to ProRess 422.  Can I just go into FCP (in the same project) and compress the video footage, import the new video files and throw it into the timeline? Or will this cause issues? I tried this as a test and it seems to be okay but I just want to check that there aren't any issues that I am not considering.
Also, when I do compress, it seems to take forever (sometimes two hours). Is there any way to make this move along faster?
    Thanks so much!

  • Mediafork - what are the best settings?

what are the quality-best settings in mediafork to rip a DVD to play on appleTV?

I am currently ripping a DVD with these settings and the ETA to rip is 13 hours! Is this normal? I thought it should only take about 2 hoursThe time to convert depends on a number of different factors which include:
    1) The complexity of the source content itself
    2) The duration of the source file
    3) The dimensions of your target file
    4) The target video data rate
    5) Whether or not you are cropping and/or scaling the file
    6) Whether or not you are deinterlacing the file
    7) The number and type of filters and/or other adjustments being made
    8) How many applications and/or processes are running simultaneously
    9) The type processor your are running
    10) The number processors at work
    11) The specific application you are using.
    12) The number of passes you are making
There are probably other things at work here also, but this should give you some idea as to the variables involved. Switching to the single-pass mode, for instance may cut your processing time in half. I usually takes me 5-8 hours for a multipass conversion of a 110-120 minute movie on my old G5 PPC. My old G4 averaged 12-15 hours for the same settings. My longest run on a G4 to an MPEG-2 for a DVD burn was 32 hours for a 96-minute Doctor Who 4-episode adventure.

  • Export file - best settings

When exporting to a quicktime movie file or AVI using quicktime conversion what settings should I enter for the best quality file's without worrying about how big the file will be?

Export to QuickTime Movie then go to the file and change the suffix to .mov.
You should get your Mac fixed or figure out why it can't burn discs.

  • Best settings for project with multiple format sources

New to Premiere Pro after leaving FCP behind and I feel like I've got enough under my belt to start a new project. Working in PP CS6.
Question: my source footage is going to be in many different formats from ripped flash video to footage shot on a C300; includes stills, QT files, etc. (My work involves a lot of found footage, image recycling, etc.)
I want to finish most likely at 1920x1080; exhibition will be festivals, but also DVD, streaming, etc. And I want to work in 24p.
What would be the best settings to use for this project? What codec? Etc?
In FCP I would have used Prores 422, but wonder if something native to PP would be better.
    Thank you.

Assuming the C300 footage will be 1080p/24, I'd probably work in that sequence myself.  Or possibly 720p/24 if the other assets were smaller than 1080.

  • How to find out the best settings for BDT

    Hi there.
I am trying to predict a movie rating. I downloaded datasets from IMDb, prepared them. A tried all of the regression algorithms, but the best result is giving Boosted Decision Tree. Now I am dealing with the best settings in this algorithm.
With default, running time was 69 seconds and the mean absolute error was 0.4844, which is quite much I think. So I tried to improve it by changing parameters of the BDT module. I tried to set Leaves per tree to 150 and than experimentaly find
remaining parameters. I've come to Samples per leaf=12, Learning rate=0.04 and
Number of trees=700. Running time was 78 seconds and mean absolute error was 0.4596.
Input of the algorithm is joined matrix with 14 columns (11 features) and 67672 rows splitted into 70:30 (training:testing).
Is there any way how to find out the best setting of Boosted Decision Tree?

Yordan's suggestion is correct, though the documentation is a bit outdated.
You can use the single parameter + sweeper mode or define your own custom ranges in the BDT module with the Parameter Range setting

  • What are the best settings to use for the newest AirPort Extreme (AC wifi) with my optimum online service provider?

I have the current generation of the AirPort Extreme and a handful of devices that utilize the new 5Ghz A/C frequency. My internet speeds were blazing fast when I had first set it up but lately it has been lagging terribly. I was told that changing my dhcp did help, which it did it seems like it might be back to its normal speeds but I just want to know what are the best settings to configure for the airport so that I can get the most out of my service on all my devices? I'm using a CAT 6 cable which does help, I have a guest wifi setup with a wifi password which I understand will slow it down a little. Can anyone just point me in the right direction or just give me a step by step guide on what settings to configure? Should I really consider turning off the guest network?

I am assuming that you are looking to configure your network to provide the highest level of bandwidth possible for your network clients. If that is the case, the following are a few things to consider:
The Internet modem should support Gigabit Ethernet. That is the Ethernet connection between the modem and your 802.11ac AirPort Extreme should be Gigabit Ethernet.
Use CAT-5e or CAT-6 Ethernet cables between all wired connections.
Only expect 802.11ac performance with 802.11ac clients in the same room as the base station.
Eliminate or significantly reduce any forms of Wi-Fi interference on both the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands.
When streaming, especially HD video on your local network, use wired connections between the host and player devices when possible.
Other than the above suggestions there are no "magic" settings that you can make on your AirPort. Note: The Guest network shares the same bandwidth as the "main" network. Unless you have a network goal to provide this type of network, it is best left disabled.

Exporting photos for UHDTV or Native 4K TV, what are the best settings ? (File: Quality File: Color Space, Image Sizing and resolution)   Or in other words; How can I get the smallest files but keep good quality for display on new UHDTV

You're welcome, and thank you for the reply.
    2) Yesterday I made the subclips with the In-Out Points and Command-U, the benefit is that I've seen the clip before naming it. Now I'm using markers, it's benefit is that I can write comment and (the later) clip name at once, the drawback is that I have to view to the next shot's beginning before knowing what the shot contains.
But now I found out that I can reconnect my clips independently to the format I converted the master clip to. I reconnected the media to the original AVI file and it worked, too! The more I work with, the more I'm sold on it... - although it doesn't seem to be able to read and use the date information within the DV AVI.
    1) Ok, I tried something similar within FCE. Just worked, but the file size still remains. Which codec settings should I use? Is the export to DV in MOV with a quality of 75% acceptable for both file size and quality? Or would be encoding as H.264 with best quality an option for archiving, knowing that I have to convert it back to DV if I (maybe) wan't to use it for editing later? Or anything else?
    Thank's in advance again,
    André

  • Best Settings for Audigy 2 ZS Recording Out to S-VHS or DVD Recor

I?m recording some very machine intensi've video & sound to outboard devices. I'm using these outboard devices so that the recording process itself does not impact the demonstration performance.
Concerning the sound out, I?m using the line & 2 out of the card, and running it through a pro level audio board (Mackie) for any adjustments & monitoring before taking the line out of the board into the recording device. When returning the sound for monitoring, I?m also running from the external device directly to the board and directly from there to either headphones or control room monitors. Thus, I?m using the Audigy for initial sound generation. So far, I've not really made any ajustments at the board other than level or balance. I like to keep things pretty flat in recording.
I?ve looked around for recommendations as to the best settings for the Audigy card from its internal software for this situation, but find no ready reference. My concern is that I have the ?hottest? signal from this device, while being very concerned with audio quality. I?m looking for both ?punch? and ?clarity? of signal.
Is there a document or source that would give me this direction? While I can move from this SB card to other more studio based cards, I?d like to keep the demo product in line with what the actual target audience would have in their machines, and be able to replicate at their workstation.
For example, does the card function best at 00% (0db) output, or 50% (-5db) output?
Or some setting in between...most likely...
Or, is there some other setting I?m not aware of?
I have what I believe are the latest card drivers and software suite, XP Pro, with every possible OS and other machine hardware update available.
