64-bit database and 32-bit companion on same host oracle home problem

Hi.
We have following situation in production.
Installed database version is 10.02.04. 64-bit,host Windows 2008 x64, now we are trying to install 32-bit companion cd and this time we are trying not to loose/kill our 64-bit oracle home inventory.
Last time 32-bit version was installed our 64-bit home vanished and attachHome script always returned error, it seems to me that 32-bit and 64-bit versions overwrite installation info to each other, only last install is visible.
When I run setup for 32-bit companion I don't see anything in installed products(it's not listing 64-bit oracle homes). We had a lot of problems with this, patch failing, no way to install anything anymore for 64-bit version...
So is it possible to install 32 and 64 bit homes on same host, can they coexist, and keep both homes(OUI homes info), are there any special steps or something?

Well I looked at Inventory.xml file, after 32-bit version was installed entry for 64-bit install was gone.
Although I can not confirm that 100 percent because 32-bit installation was not done by me, maybe other guy who did it manually delete it as I did with 32-bit version to return my 64-bit inventory.
So my options are to backup 64-bit inventory, install 32-bit companion my 64-bit inventory will be overwritten, backup 32-bit, delete 32-bit, restore 64-bit inventory and I'll have active 64-bit inventory. Now I have inventory for 64-bit and I can restore 32-bit or 64-bit inventory when I need it.
This woks by is there another way...somebody...

  • Can smb and afp coexist on the same host?

    Greetings all!
I've been using Macs and OSX for a year. And recently I bought another MBP so I am seriously considering Time Machine backups. I have a Linux home server running Ubuntu 12.04 and Samba and my previous MBP running Mountain Lion connects to it happily without any problem. But my trouble started when I tried to setup afp on the same box.
I followed this post and this post and got the fake time capsule showing in Time Machine without any problem. But soon I found myself unable to connect to the old samba shares. The smb host now displays as a Time Capsule. If I click on that OSX will say 'failed to connect'.
As I understand there are 2 pieces involved on the server side, avahi to broadcast the service info and netatalk to provide the service itself. It's a bit like nmbd and smbd in Samba. If this is true then it's somewhat understandable that OSX can not display the same host as 2 different types of services at the same time. So I stopped avahi-daemon and very soon the old Samba shares appeared again.
I am able to connect to both services using command+k but I would rather have them running normally so that my wife will be able to use them without extra tech support. Can anyone tell me if what I said above is true and/or if there is a graceful way around this? If answer is no then I will have to create a virtual machine or nic alias just for time machine and I think it's quite a waste.
    Thanks!

I don't quite understand why people buying non-Apple devices should not expect OSX to work with them
Because Apple has no control over 3rd parties. They can do what they want. If Apple publishes a new authentication mechanism in 2002, the 3rd party doesn't have to implement it. That isn't Apple's fault. If they do get around to supporting it in 2009 and then some 4th party doesn't bother to use the 2009 code in 2011, Apple still can't do anything about that. If anyone else wants to advertise, and support, Time Machine compatibility, they are welcome to do that. They definitely have the advertising part down, the support, not so much.
There is a time when apple only worked with apple but that aparently was not sustainable. And that's why now Apple is embracing smb
Apple's goal is to choose the best solution for its customers. Sometimes that is a proprietary connection or protocol and sometimes it is something industry standard. In all cases, there has to be some cut off for testing and support. That is why Apple eventually stops supporting its own hardware and technologies at a certain point. That is also why Apple will support SMB as deployed by Microsoft but isn't going to waste much time on home-built Linux servers.
(it's said even samba was used shortly on OSX, not quite sure) and allow users to install windows on macs. Even OSX itselt is based on FreeBSD and uses quite a lot of open source components.
Apple uses a lot of open source software. Samba was one of those projects. Unfortunately, the people that made those products didn't want Apple using them so they changed the licensing to prohibit Apple (and pretty much only Apple) from using their source code. That is why some of the open source packages in OS X are stuck in a 2007 version. That is also why Apple abandonned Samba and wrote its own SMB implementation.
OS X is not based on FreeBSD. It has a BSD-flavoured POSIX layer, but it is a distinct operating system at its core.
IMHO there is no magic in throwing money at propiretary hardware/software or praying to Steve Jobs. If something is not working, it must be that there is a bug in the code or the design. And neither OSX nor Macs are built by God, which means they are bugged as other software/hardware.
I'm confused. When did anyone say anything about praying to Steve Jobs or divine technology? You asked about using Linux as a Time Machine server. I suggested you avoid that if you value your data. I also asked why you would want to keep running Linux now that you have a Mac. A Mac can do anything Linux can do with a fraction of the effort.
The answer is simple, Macs can not do what I want.
    Which is?
Withe a standard mATX case I can have quite a few 3.5" drive bays while there is only one 2.5" in a Mac mini. And with Ubuntu/Debian, getting/updating the software or the system is quite easy, just one or a few lines of apt commands, not quite possible with OSX.
That's certainly true. OS X updates itself without having to run any apt commands.
If you must compile something from the source to get a Linux running then something must be seriously wrong.
My thoughts exactly. But perhaps you didn't follow me entirely. Apt, yum, etc don't have everything one needs to setup something as fancy as, I don't know, a web server. While I did have to compile a number of things from source, I had to actually edit the source a couple of times as well.
The best thing I love about Linux is openess. You can customize almost everything and change it whatever way you want. With Mac, for example the 2013 Retina MBP I just bought, it's not even possible to change the power button behavior, which is very annoying.
Then why did you buy a Mac? That's no big secret. Some people like not have to configure everything just to get it running. I have other things to do than edit config files.
Back to my original question. I think the problem is not quite with compatibility of Bonjor but rather whether OSX can show this or not. Imagine you have a smb share and afp share on the same host, with the same name, how would OSX display it? And which icon will OSX use to display the host? I can not think of the answer so if you know please tell me.
OS X will just display it like it display any server. One of your links event has instructions on how to pick the icon you want to fake. If you are running both services then I am not sure which one it would try to connect with. Neither of your services are native, not matter how much they try to fake it. If you wanted a specific service you would have to manually use the correct protocol in Finder > Go > Connect to Server. However, bot of those links were posted before Mavericks. Obviously they don't work anymore. It's Linux. It's open. Right? So fix it and post it on your own blog. I do not know what modifications you would have to make to either Samba or Netatalk to make them work with Mavericks.
If all you need is to allow your wife to connect to one specific protocol, then manually connect to that service, saving your password in the keychain, and create an alias by Command-option dragging the server to some other folder. Then, she can just double-click on the alias to connect to the network.
Now, if you really want to be clever, you can setup an automount to that service instead. Then the server will be mounted and unmounted as needed.

  • Migration from of database and app from SQL server 2005 to Oracle 10g

    Hello Every body,
Lately, I have been requested to migrate one inhouse developed hub application from SQL server 2005 to Oracle 10g. The objective is to move application and also the database to Oracel 10g.
    Here is the current platform:
    OS Win 2008 64 bit
    JDK 1.4.2
    JBoss 3.2.5
    EJB 2.1
My question is what kind of issues you guys see in above upgrade. As far I know, Schema and Database migration can be done by Oracle workbench. Oracle 10g supports JDK 1.4. Oracle 10g also supports EJB 2.1.
Anything, I need to take into consideration or any risks or problems. I would like to list down all the risks, and accordingly, I am thinking of start the upgrade.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Zeeshan Qureshi

In general the Java/J2EE application needs work in the following categories:
    1. Connection Settings: Use Oracle JDBC drivers, create new data sources, connection pools and what not. Disable AUTOCOMMIT for Oracle JDBC Connections.
    2. For EJBs, you should regenerate the entity beans because some object names/column names might have changed in oracle.
    3. Any custom SQL that is in use in the EJBs will have to be ported to Oracle just as you would do in stored procedures and other applications.
    4. For Java front-ends, if you are using callouts to stored procedures and expecting result sets then they will require some changes. You need to modify the stored procedure call signature to include the REF CURSOR variables and process them.
    5. Changes to any SQL Server specific database functions manipulating character/date data will be required.
    6. CLOB/BLOB/XML apis are different across databases so if you are using those then focus on them as well.
    7. Retreiving Auto/generated keys from database also may need changes from what I have seen.
    Hope this helps..

    Prakash

  • Oracle 11G database and Application Server installed on same server

What are the pros and cons installing Oracle 11G database and Oracle Application Server (Forms and Reports) on the same server?
    Thank you in advance, Sonya

Some may want their data in a separate network zone for security reasons.
It also depends if it is the same people that do maintenance on db and appserver.
It is lower cost with one server, and only 1 Os to set up.

  • Can I install 9i database  and  9i AS on the same server ?

    Dear Forum,
We need to install Oracle 9i database(9.2.0.1.0) 64-bits
and Oracle 9i Application Server (9.0.2.0.1) on the same Server machine with the following features:
Machine: SunFire 6800, 4 CPU, 8 GB RAM
    OS: Solaris 9 8/03
    Is it possible?
Will we have problems or conflicts with the ports numbers?
Please, any aditional comments or recommendations will be welcome!!!!
    Best regards,
    Alfredo

    Hi Alfredo,
If you are planning to install an infrastructure as part of your application server, you might run into a port conflict for the TNS listener. The easiest way of solving this is to move the non-infrastructure database listener to another port.
A number of things like these are handled automatically in later releases. You do know that 9.0.2 is old and desupported, right?
    Regards,
    Mathias

  • Historical and transaction data in the same tables creates perf problems

Our Oracle based application is slow partly due to the fact that historical data are kept in the same table as transactional data. For example records about deceased patients, patients treated 5 years ago...etc, are kept in the one and only one patient table, which is needed to run the daily process of the hospital. So gradually all our major tables PATIENTS, CHARTS, NAMES, APPOINTMENTS have grown very large and since most of our SQL join all these tables at the same time, then all screens and reports run very slowly. I have introduced the idea that we should split all these tables in two: historical PATIENTS data, and CURRENT PATIENTS data...the same with all the others. A nice system would first search in the smaller transactional tables, which would run faster being smaller, and if no data found, then fallback to the historical tables. But this would require programming. From what I have read mateialized view could solve part of our problem. We could have views containing for example only one year worth of the data, and I guess any changes could be later replicated in the base table. What I dont know is what to do if we cannot find the patient in the matealized views ? Do I need to fallback to another SQL which will search in the initial base tables ? Anyway we can implement this without programming ? Tx.

  • Flashback database and Physical Standby databases

    Hi,
We are thinking about the following scenario in our Production Standby databases. We are trying to do this to avoid number database cloning situations.
When we require live data to test data fixes :-
    1. Switchover/failover the standby database.
    2. opened this database in read write mode.
    3. Apply the fix and test.
    4. Flashing back the database prior to the SCN which did the switchover/failover.
    5. Activate the standby again using a new standby controlfile.
Would you experts please comment on this idea?
Is this is possible? If so, would you please guide through the steps/some documentation.
    Thanks in advance

This will not work according to me,
1)U can give previous SCN in rollback and gets the data till that SCN, but it will not become standby unless u make it a standby again manually by creating standy controlfile etc(may be this will be succesfull and limited up to check the data fixes).
2)Iif your first step succesfull then what about the fixes u test by applying patches using opatch and patchsets that cannot be rollbacked using flashback because they are copying new version files and adding some more configuration files to oracle home?.
There are lots of pitfalls and loop holes needed to be checked
    Regards
    Kaunain

  • Starting of database and listener automatically while starting server

how to start the listener and database automatically while starting RH-LINUX server itself?
    thanks for advance
    Mohan

    Hello Mohan,
following is the code of my shell, which i use for starting, stopping, restarting teh oracle and listener service, except your oracle home location and oracle user i do not think you need to change any thing..also i assume that you some basic knowledge of shell programming.
put this /etc/rc.d/init.d, then add this service by chkconfig -- add oracle (if oracle is the file name in whcih this shell exists).
it will run for 3,4,5 of runlevels with priority as 20, 80

Thanks, Your help and guide will appreciated very much.

    Hello,
The directory for the creation of the logfiles does not exist, from the error:
RMAN-06136: ORACLE error from auxiliary database: ORA-00344: unable to re-create online log '/db/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.5/dbs/ /db
    /redolog.001/catalog1/catalog1_log1.rdo'
ORA-27040: skgfrcre: create error, unable to create file
HP-UX Error: 2: No such file or directoryI.e., there is no such directory as *'/db/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.5/dbs/ /db/redolog.001/catalog1/catalog1_log1.rdo'*
Your db_recovery_file_dest parameter may be set here, therefore change this:
    '/db/redolog.001/catalog1/catalog1_log1.rdo' size 5m,
    ' /db/redolog.003/catalog1/catalog1_log2.rdo' size 5m,
    ' /db/redolog.002/catalog1/catalog1_log3.rdo' size 5m;To this:
    'catalog1_log1.rdo' size 5m,
    'catalog1_log2.rdo' size 5m,
    'catalog1_log3.rdo' size 5m;And try again.

  • 10.1 and 10.2 Oracle Homes on the same clusterware

We are looking at moving our production databases to a three node database cluster running on a Sun Solaris platform. Out current production database is version 10.2.0.3 so we intend to install the database software up to patchset 10.2.0.3 and the Oracle Clusterware version 10.2.0.1.0.
At the same time we would also like to use this database cluster to run the asdb metadata repository for the Oracle Application Server 10.1.2 . It’s database is of version 10.1 so a 10.1 Oracle Home would need to be installed.
My first question is if it is possible to run a 10.1 and 10.2 home on the same cluster. I do realize that the clusterware will be 10.2.0.1.0 so the 10.1 database might not be able to run on it. If that is the case then I assume that we would also need to install clusterware 10.1.0.2.
This leads me to my second question which is: Is it possible to run two versions of clusterware on the same node? With different Oracle Homes running on top of it?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Allan

Murali, Kevin, Thanks for the reply,
I will open a TAR to find out as to whether the Oracle Clusterware is downward compatible.
Have you seen RAC installations where databases instances are running on two or more Oracle Homes of different versions at the same time? For example a database cluster which is used for test/development would have an Oracle Home which is at version 10.2.0.2. In order to perform tests on a database upgraded to 10.2.0.3 an Oracle Home would be cloned and then have the 10.2.0.3 patchset applied. Then a copy of the production database would be upgraded to 10.2.0.3 using the 10.2.0.3 home. In the end on the same cluster there would be test databases running on both 10.2.0.2 and 10.2.0.3.
    Thanks,
    Allan

  • Can Oracle 11g RAC and 10g RAC co-exists on same host

Can somebody tell me if it is possible to have Oracle 11g and 10g RAC installed and configured on same host.

    Thanks,
-ZubairYou have to use 11G Clusterware , if you want to use 11g Database and you can use 10g Database as well.
(You can not use 10g Clusterware and 11g Clusterware on the same host...)
But you can use 10g Database and 11g Database on the same host, But you have to use 11G Clusterware.

    Hello ashharuddin,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information, take a look at:
    iPhone: Troubleshooting No SIM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4148
Toggle Airplane mode On and Off.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Check for a carrier settings update. Tap Settings > General > About. If an update is available, a prompt will appear.
Remove the SIM Card and verify that it is a valid, carrier-manufactured SIM. Also verify that it is not damaged, worn, or modified. Then reinsert it.
    Restore the iPhone.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • Windows XP Pro (32-bit) and Vista Ultimate (64-bit) on the same Mac Pro HD?

Has anyone been able to install both Windows XP Pro (32-bit) and Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit) on the same dedicated Windows hard drive? I have four HD in my Mac Pro, and one of them is dedicated for Windows (and bootable via Boot Camp). I found the following technical articles about installing Windows XP & Vista on the same hard drive (using two separate partitions) using a VMWare machine as the test system:
    http://apcmag.com/howto_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystepguide.htm
    http://apcmag.com/howto_dualboot_vista_with_xp__stepbystep_guide_withscreenshots.htm
Has anyone successfully installed Windows XP (32-bit) and Vista 64-bit) on the same NTFS partition?
I already have Windows XP Pro (32-bit) SP3 installed on my single NTFS hard drive. I am looking for the best way to add the Vista 64-bit installation on the same hard drive.
Any thoughts and advise are appreciated.

Windows has its own list of boot OSs, and default, from msconfig. It will sit and wait for xx-seconds on startup in Windows if you want to boot from an alternate.
As to whether Apple's OS Switcher (aka startup disk bootcamp control panel or tray icon) sees both, I had Windows Home Premium and Ultimate 64, and pretty sure OS X saw both. That was pre-Leopard and before there were 64-bit Apple drivers.
I can't think of any scenerio of wanting to mix 32-bit and 64-bit on the same paritition, you realize you can't install the one over the other and must do a clean install.
When I added a partition out of main partition (I wanted to put search index and page file on their own partition) those partitions aren't seen - are hidden - to Leopard.

  • Installation of 32 bit and 64 bit Flash on same CPU

I have a 64 bit version of Windows 7 and an installation of a 64 bit IE 9.0 and a 32 bit version of IE 9.0 installed and running simultaneously on the same computer system.
After downloading the latest Flash player, installation went well for my 64 bit version of IE 9.0.  I notice that my 32 bit version of IE 9.0 was not updated.
How do I get the 32 bit version installed.

I attached two files.  I don't know why they did not make it through the e-mail systems.  I will attempt one more time.
