720p and 1080i in same timeline FCP 5.1.4?

I've tried to find an answer to this in the discussions, but no luck, so I hope this hasn't been asked a million times before.
Can I edit 720p and 1080i files in the same timeline? If yes great! On to the next question.
Once I complete the edits, how should I output the final cut - in 720p or in 1080i? And if the answer is 1080i do I need to upres the720p and how do I do that?
I have FCP 5.1.4.
Thanks!

Can I edit 720p and 1080i files in the same timeline?
In FCP 5.1.4? No, not without rendering one. Sequence settings match one codec, so anything else will need to be rendered. FCP 6 solved this..open timeline is available. It also automatically sets the sequence to match the settings of the first clip dropped into it.
If yes great!
sorry.
Once I complete the edits, how should I output the final cut - in 720p or in 1080i?
Depends...what is your delivery requirement? What do you have more footage of...720 or 1080?

  • Mixing 720p and 1080i footage in a sequence

What's the best choice to edit a movie comprised of clips shot in 720p30 and clips shot in 1080i60? "Upscale and interlace" the 720p footage or "downscale and deinterlace" the 1080i footage?
Using easy setup, one has the choice to create either a 720p or a 1080i project, and when adding a clip to a sequence in this project, the clip is automatically converted to the project's format. Therefore, this is something that needs to be decided ahead of time. Or is it possible to change the project's settings after attempting to export the sequence if the result is disappoining?

All right, but assuming that I have the choice of output format (and I do), what is most likely yo result in the best overall result? Interpolating (720p output) or extrapolating (1080i)? Intuitively, I would think that interpolating is most likely to result in less artifacts than extrapolating. So on this measure, a 720p output of a mixture of 720p and 1080i footage would be more recommendable than a 1080i output.
The good news is that you are saying I can change this in my sequence at any time.

  • HDV and DVCAM in same timeline???

I am working with HDV and DVCAM in the same timeline. It is a HDV sequence so when I drop all the DVCAM footage on it is small. Well I just took the scale to 225 and it seems to look ok. Not HD good, but not all artifacted either. Is their a better way to do this (or supposed to do this)? I am also just wandering if I am violating some format law or something too?
    Thanks a bunch

Final Cut Pro can't mix formats and resolution in the same timeline. You'll probably have to pick one and either downrez or upscale but of course the upscale won't look good at all. Search the forum as this is a common topic.

  • Combining and outputting SD and HD in same timeline

I have a bunch of stuff shot in SD and just purchased the Sony FX7 and want to finish off a project with some of the stuff i shot in HD with that camera. I have no problem working with both formats in the timeline, but when i burn it onto DVD there is noticeable issues with the stuff shot on the HD camera. Seems like its an interlacing problem. I do'nt know if there is something in compression that can help it or what i can do. I'm new to FCP 6. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Capture the HDV footage as DV, so that it matches the DV footage you already have shot. There is an option in the camera to downconvert as the signal is being sent out.

  • Automatic switch between 720p and 1080i

I just got FiOS installed today and as I was going through the menu, I noticed that for the video resolution, you are forced to pick a format. Is there a way to set it up so that the STB automatically picks the resolution that the broadcaster has chosen? I don't want to watch everything in 1080i or 720p. I'd like to watch it as the channel has chosen to send the signal
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Unfortunately no.
My suggestion is to try both and stick with the one that looks best on the most channels that you regularly watch. I have a 720p LCD but the 1080i setting in my DVR provides the best HD picture by just a little bit.
Also, you have an option you can set for the SD channels (SD Override). I prefer OFF, which means that the SD channels are sent to my TV also using 1080i. This results in a slightly worse SD picture than using 480i or 480p, but eliminates the extremely annoying 2-4 second delay (HDMI re-sync) when switching between HD and SD channels. Again, I suggest you try the various settings and pick the one that you like best (or hate less?)

  • 24f and 60i on same timeline

I have a project shot on 2 cameras. It was all supposed to be at 1080/24p, but one camera got set to 1080/60i. Would it be better to work with this in a 60i sequence or a 24p sequence?
Are there any considerations I should take into account when I export for SD DVD? (i.e. de-interlacing - since some of my footage is interlaced and some is progressive - ignore it or deinterlace, or...?)
    Thanks.
    --Nathan Lawrence

Field dominance can be a big problem, not so much because of strobing but because of resolution loss. FCP will automatically de-interlace footage where field order of a footage doesn't match the sequence, but if your SD sequence is lower-field-first and your HD footage is upper-field-first, FCP will reduce resolution, then flip fields and throw another 50% of your resolution away.
Run some tests, but you might want to consider editing in an HD sequence and downconverting in Compressor afterwards.

  • Cable TV - 720P or 1080i

Hi, just wondering what the best resoltion for regular broadcast cable TV is.
The TV is a Samsung, 50" 1080P. I just got a new HD cable box from TW, and it offers two options for resolution; 720P and 1080i.
    Thanks,

    Thanks,
Should also be an option that lets you match the resolution of the content you've tuned into.
Resolution should be 720p for 720p content, and 1080i for 1080i content.  If you force the receiver to 1080i, it'll scale 720p and interlace it to 1080i, and then the TV will take 1080i and deinterlace it.  You don't want that intermediary step for 720p content if you can avoid it.
Similarly, you don't want 1080i content to get deinterlaced and downscaled to 720p.

  • Mixing JVC 720p25 and Sony 1080i in same project

    Hi,
I am about to start editing a documentary that was shot using a JVC GY HD100 camera using 720P25 and a sony camera using 1080i (interlaced)PAL.
I captured all the JVC footage using LUMIER and the sony directly into FCP.
What I want to know is what is the best sequence settings to use, so that I can edit both in the same timeline.and have the best result.
I dexumed the m2t JVC footage and encoded it using Apple intermediate codec.
    any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I am using a quad with 6 gig ram
but if I do that don't i loose quality from the jvc footage?
may be go the other way, then I can crop the 1080 footage accordingly?
I intend to deliver in DV and DVD.
Thanks for the response, it seems not many people know what I am trying to do. But the director/camera man shot the documentary using both cameras, the Sony for underwater stuff and the JVC for interviews and other out of water stuff.

  • Please help. When exporting a 720p video using Quicktime Conversion in FCP it saves some extra temporary files to my computer. The file is called ICMMultiPassStorage. This file gets so large that eventually the program and exporting process crashes.

Please help. When exporting a 720p video using Quicktime Conversion in FCP it saves some extra temporary files to my computer. The temporary file it saves is called ICMMultiPassStorage. This file gets so large that eventually the program and exporting process crashes. I have been able to locate the file using GrandPerspective and close out of FCP to delete it. But when I try exporting the movie again it creates the ICMMultiPassStorage file again. I have made sure my scratch disks are set to my external hard drive so I know that isn't the issue. How do I fix this problem so these temporary files are not being stored on my internal hard drive instead of my external? Thanks!

Try exporting the timeline "using current settings" via Make QuickTime Movie, then submit that clip to Compressor for the transcode. This should be faster and less painful.

  • SONY EX1 and Cannon 5D together on same timeline?

    Hello
Need to edit EX1 and Cannon 5D footage on same timeline - both 1080p 30fps. What is best timeline? Pro Res 422? I know how to import SONY EX1 footage, but how to import/convert/edit 5D, and on same timeline as EX1 footage? Using FCP 7 latest.
Also, anything to watch out for, be aware of using these two together?
    Thanks much
    K

Convert both to ProRes. Or you can keep the XDCAM native, but convert the 5D to ProRes and use a ProRes timeline. 1080p 29.97 ProRes timeline.
DO NOT edit the native H.264 Canon files. FCP will choke.

  • Trying to make a link under and object on the same timeline in-active

Hello Flash pros, I am wonder if there is a way to make a linked object deactivate if another object appears above it in my swf file. Basically when mousing over the a image that covers the link object, the hot spot still works which give the impression that the image that is showing above it has a link. Btw I already know how to place the overlaying image on another timeline of which the linked object is not on, but that is not what I am looking for in this case, I actually need the linked object to remain on the same timeline as the overlay images.
    Please help
    thanks
    MontyRob

When you get back, move your posting to the AS1/AS2 forum if this doesn't resolve it for you.  Make the image a movieclip and assign it a rollover code as well.
    on(rollover){
    this.useHandCursor = false;
That will block access to the button below but disable the cursor changing to indicate the image as an interactive object.

  • Why there's a lenght difference between 24fps and 23,976 fps timelines with the same clip?

I was working on a 23,976fps project and I've tried to import a short  animated sequence of 44 tiff frames in my timeline in my Premiere CS5.
I've imported the sequence, interpreted the footage to 23,976fps (as it was rendered in AE) to check it before sending it to a finish house.
First issue. Even if I set the framerate to 23,976, Premiere CS5 shows me 23,98 on interpret footage window. I've assumed it as a rounded number.
When I drag the clip to my 23,976 sequence, the clip shows as 43(!) frames length on info panel. It misses one frame. Putting the sequence over the original video, It really misses a frame.
I decided to make a test. And placed the same clip, interpreted the same way on a 24fps sequence, and the clip shows as 44 frames length on info panel.
How can, the same clip, shows different amount of frames (I'm not talking about time, but simply raw frames), on different timelines? It does not make any sense! If my sequence has 44 frames, It should show as 44 frames independent of the timeline I've imported it. Am I Right?
Just for test, I´ve imported the same sequence on AE, and in it shows as 44 frames on a 23,976 timeline. How can I trust Premiere frame interpreting this way?
Just one more thing. The scene used as base for the AE animation, has 44 frames, and it was measured and cut from a 30s film on the same premiere that is having this weird behavior.
Can anyone explain to me what Just have happened? It´s driving me Crazy!
    Thanks in Advance
    Mauricio Mendes

There's a long and storied history behind the concept of a drop frame tmecode. It traces its origin to early color TV in the USA, and was a way to get rid of artifacting that was visible on B&W TVs when watching the color signal (color subcarrier).
Basically, by having your intermediate timebase set wrong, you were having PPro drop a frame. That's why you saw the mismatch in frame numbers.

It seems to be solved when transcoding the 25p clips to 23,98p (both Canon EOS 5dMKII clips)
    But *** it must work!

  • 16-Bit and 24-Bit audio in same timeline

Will be working with DV-NTSC video in FCP 5.1.4
The dialogue is 24-Bit. All my music and SFX are 16-Bit.
I do not want to convert all my files to 24-Bit.
I know it is best to remain consistent, but I want to know if anyone has experienced problems specifically from mixing the two different bit rates within the same sequence.
Audio quality is not the issue. This is off-line editing only. Will not be using the digitized audio as final. Will only be providing EDL's.
Specifically want to know if anyone has experienced and reasonably believes that mixing 16 and 24 in same sequence will create technical difficulties.
    Jeff

Interestingly enough they are not all 48K. The music & FX are 44.1K.
I have heard this before that you should avoid mixing 44.1 and 48K.
However when I heard this I had already been mixing the two rates for years without problem.
I have always mixed these without problem yet. Can I ask why it is best to avoid this ? What is it that you are asking FCP & Computer to do which will create problems ? What are the problems which can be caused by mixing 44 & 48 ?
    Thanks for your reply
