A bunch of problems

I tried to rename my home folder. It worked for a while. Then I tried downloading some widgets but the files would not show up on my desktop. I came here and saw that someone was having the same problem and the suggestion was to delete a com.apple.desktop prefrence file. I did so. After that everything started messing up. The home folder came with the old name back but all my music, pictures and documents were in a different folder named after the renamed home folder. After that I deleted the old homefolder and now I don't have one. Furthermore if I go to the HD/Users my old user name is there but again none of my files are in it. I tried moving the folder with all my files in it into the users area and it just vanished. How do I change my user name? how do I get back my homefolder and how do I get back all my music, pictures and videos? please help

Ok, you have some problems but hopefully nothing that can't be fixed.
First, when you download widgets, they won't automatically appear on your Desktop. You must click the Dashboard icon in your Dock to launch your widgets. It's the round black icon with white logos. By default it's on the left side of your Dock adjacent to the Finder icon way to the left. Hopefully you haven't moved your Dock icons around.
Second.. see if your music/videos are here: Double click the MacintoshHD on your Desktop. That opens a Finder window for you. Now, in the Sidebar on the left, click where it says: Music. Click where it says iTunes. Your iTunes tracks should be listed there.
Have you tried launching iTunes to see if your music / videos are there?
If you can locate your music and videos, back them up to another drive or Mac computer. Then, take your system restore disks and do an Archive and Install. This will reinstate your Home Folder. Don't move it, don't rename for the time being until you get a better handle on the Mac OS. User your MacBook User Guide for reference.

Bunch of problems with HP Pavilion Entertainment PC

I have an HP Pavilion dv7-3178ca, Windows 7 64-bit
I've been experiencing a number of problems. These include:
-very hot exhaust, fan always running
-The graphics keep blacking out then are recovered (NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M) - downloaded update but I believe that it continues to occur - not certain though
-laptop overall slower and feels sluggish
-programs in general seem to have become harder to deal with, errors, etc
-battery capacity has become extremely weak, says we should replace it
-when not plugged in, it all of a sudden shuts off quickly without warning, turn it back on, get black and white prompt screen, reboot normal, etc.
-did the same very rapid, all of a sudden lights off type deal a while back (a year maybe?), sent it to HP multiple times, thought it was a battery issue a bunch of times, then finally replaced some sort of heat component, stopped doing that

One additional thing:
Got home and trackpad had weird web like something on it, touched it, it was some sort of plastic film on the trackpad that had become raised or something, flaking off. Someone else then came in and tried to wipe it off with cloth, and there's mysterious black marks that won't come off now. It's also smudging much more easily and the lines to indicate the scroll up and down region are coming off, attached to the plastic film I guess?

My iphone 4 shuts off and won't come back on and sometimes when i send a text the other person gets a blank message. Just got this phone and really don't want to put up with a bunch of problems

I just got the i phone 4 on Friday and it has shut off and not come back on twice. I was able to get it to come on by holding the top button down for a few seconds but i don't want to have to do that. Also, i am having a problem with texting, i will send a text and the person on the other end says that I have sent a blank text. Just need to know if this is something that is going to continue because if so then I will take it back and get a Droid

Assuming the phone isn't jailbroken, the basic steps (as needed) are:
Restart phone (you already did this)
Reset phone
Restore phone in iTunes using a backup
Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup

If your phone is jailbroken, this is the most frequent cause of the problems you described. Restoring could permanently brick the phone.
Note that your iOS is old and the current version is 4.2.8. It's odd that it wasn't updated when your activated your phone in iTunes, being that you got it last Friday.

A bunch of problems after Solaris 10 install...

At first, I'm pretty new in administrating unix systems so forgive me if some questions might sound evident to you.
So there, I installed Solaris 10 on my x86 Pentium 2. After installation, it reboots and then kinda get stuck while booting. After a while sendmail claims it cant qualify it's own domain name.
Then, It asks me to wait for the desktop logon screen before loging in. But than one never shows up. I managed to get a console login prompt, I logged on as root and, using kdmconfig, I set the desktop manager to Xsun. Now when I lounch /bin/X11/X , a solaris splash screen shows up and then nothing more happens... Since I dont know how or if it is possible to quit X at this point, I'm forced to push Reset and to re-wait to get mt console login prompt (and god, this takes time...).
Any ideas about solving those problems? Thanks in advance!

A bunch of problem with my z1.

Hi. I have a lot of problems with my phone.
1. When i try enter my messages i cant get in. It says that messages has been blocked.
2. The background and the locked screen background is for the beginning black, after a second the wallpaper shows up.
3. When i want to write something in my browser, the virtual keyboard doesnt show, sometimes it happens when in not in the browser to.
4. When i try to take pictures with the camera,the programswapper (?) comes up and there isnt any pictures taken.
5. Many times when i just touch another part of the screen the phonebook appears.
And many other small problems.

I just got my iPod 5, and there's a bunch of problems. I locked it by accident, and the Voiceover won't stop narrating every action I make, and th double tap misunderstood my preferred password. I don't know how to get onto iTunes. SOMEONE HELP

Triple click the home button and try going to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn VoiceOver off. You may have to use three fingers to scroll the screen to get there. If problems see the following for how to turn off via iTunes:

I have a Samsung Fascinate and all thus far today it is not allowing to do a lot of things..
I can't send or receive messages - pictures, texts, etc. I can type out a message, but when I hit the send button it completely just deletes it, or at least that's what it looks like, instead of adding it to my 'conversation' with whomever it may be. I don't get it.
When I get a missed call, it doesn't add it to my phone calls. I can make and receive calls though.
I can't access the Market, it say that there is no connection, though my friend can access it in her phone so I know it's not Verizon.
My clock is 5 hours and 51 minutes ahead.
I've already checked for updates, updated roaming, restarted my phone 5+ times, ended applications, scanned using my virus app, etc.
I was thinking it might have been something I downloaded late last night, but I've already deleted/uninstalled the couple that I did. I just can't figure it out and I really don't want to have to completely restore my phone AGAIN.
PLEASE.. some help would be greatly appreciated!

I feel your pain; I'd be very frustrated if my phone was experiencing all the issues outlined in your post. I see that restarting and ending applications did not resolve the issues and I understand you desire not to do a factory reset.
Are you using the native SMS (text messaging) application or a third party app?
If you Change Time Manually on your phone, does the device change time on it's on later?
For the text messages issues I recommend to first ensure that no blocks have been added to your account that prevent your phone from sending/receiving messages. Then, if you are using a third party SMS application, please remove and see if you are able to send/receive messages with the native SMS application.
The timing issue sounds like a third party application conflict; please run your device in Safe Mode to confirm such conflict exist (or not). Safe Mode temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this troubleshooting step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue.
If your phone runs fine in safe mode you must identify the conflicting application and remove it. Lamentably there is no easy way to identify a conflicting app and you will need to remove all apps and add one by one and test.
I trust that the above options will help you resolve your device concerns. Keep in mind that a Factory Reset may be necessary to resolve all issues.

How do I get rid of MobileMe on my preference folder; it's still causing me problems when I have to iPhoto to email photos?

How can I delete all of the old MobileMe items on my iMac which is causing me a bunch of problems when I want to use iPhoto to send pictures. it reverts back to my old MobileMe info and hangs up or gets to the wrong people who have my old mobileMe email address? It's crazy, I've installed iCloud but the problem persist and I can't even use ICloud without having this issue do the wrong things for or it dosen't allow me me to use it in the iCloud configuration that is setup on my iMac. Am I missing a step here; please get me out this hangup?

Using the software update created problems

Ok so I bought Leopard and upgraded from Tiger, then updated using the software update. Now I have a whole bunch of problems. My Apple Works is now missing, the program is just gone. All my Adobe programs now give me the error of Incompatible with current OS or some Your Licensing is not working error. I have a whole load of Adobe programs that should be working, like Contribute CS 3 and Photo Shop and Illustrator and Designer and so on. All of which worked under the 4.11 and the 5.1 OSes but now no longer work. This isn't even touching on the elimination of the Classic environment which i have a lot of programs that will cost way too much money to buy again for the new OS.
Anybody know how to get back Apple Works and how to get the Adobe products running again?

First set of problems, I had two software packaged programs go missing. Totally erased from the system. iWeb and Apple Works.
This would not happen after a software update, unless the directory got damaged somehow*:

That would give the machine a difficult time trying to find files on the computer.
Next set of problems my external firewire drive stopped being seen from the system.
This most commonly happens if a Firewire hard drive does not have the proper firmware to be used with the operating system in question. This is one reason most people recommend dismounting and disconnecting all third party devices before applying updates. This used to be a more common problem with 10.3, but not out of the realm of experience of people with 10.5.
The next most common cause is the clock battery dying, but not quite dead. Replacing it can fix that problem as well.
I should say that my system consists of several computers networked together.
I would have completely disconnected the computers before applying the update.
I can take my external firewire back up time machine drives and connect them to a PC and see the data. But my macs do not even recognise them, they don't even show up when plugged in.
This is further evidence the firmware on the hard drive was not yet updated for compatibility with the operating system.
Third set of problems, all the apple install disks became unreadable by my system.
This can be commonly caused by a dying optical drive, or bad permissions on the system, or a dying clock battery.
Fourth set of problems, all the Adobe programs became un-useable and returned errors. Adobe has been working with me on this and have been far more helpful than Apple has been.
That's a case of corrupt files, or files which were migrated from another system. Migration that is done improperly from a PowerPC to an Intel system may create issues with powerpc plugins on an Intel Mac. If your hard drive got over 85% full and/or the directory was damaged for any reason (especially forced reboots), that can also trigger such a reaction during an update.
Fifth set of problems just recently discovered, all my stored movies, music and podcast in iTunes is gone.
This is usually due to a directory issue, but can also be a dying hard drive issue.
Sounds like you have multiple symptoms pointing towards a few common possible causes. Directory damage, and clock battery malfunctioning, and needing a better firmware on your Firewire hard drive case. Replacing the hard drive case with a compatible one is simple enough. http://www.macsales.com/ makes the right cases. I would not go with LaCie, Western Digital, or Seagate cases. Western Digital and Seagate internal hard drives are fine in of themselves. Replace the MyBook hard drive cases with http://www.macsales.com/ cases and same with the LaCies.
I have Apple TV and EYE TV and a Midi interface box attached to my G5 mac. My G5 is the one that lost Apple Works and iWeb.
Remove the Midi interface box. It may help things work better.
My systems have the super drive on them and I have virtual PC and Softwindows installed.
Softwindows barely works if at all under Classic, and VirtualPC only works with version 7.0.2 under Leopard. If you got an earlier version working under Leopard you were lucky. You really needed to migrate to a supported emulator under Leopard listed on my FAQ*:

It says you didn't research your options well enough before upgrading to Leopard. This has been well documented in the forums before this.
Booted up from the Norton disks and repaired disk.
This is the biggest flaw in your plans, which caused ALL your problems. Norton is not compatible with any version of Mac OS X. It eats directories for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Only Alsoft Disk Warrior is safe and only after a data recovery attempt with Prosoft Data Rescue II, Subrosasoft Filesalvage, or Boomerang's Boomerang. We have constantly harped on the forums here that Norton is damaging to data. This has been known about since Mac OS X came out. It has even been called "Norton Kevorkian" by some.
You can't blame Apple for this. Your lack of research and lack of asking in the right places at the right time led to your failures.

Mac mini video output problems

My mini is one bunch of problems, here is what im dealing with,
On my screen i have 2 systems connected, when i switched bac from my windows pc to my mini, my screen says no signal. I can press the keyboard etc, nothing happens. Same as when the mini goes into sleep mode. It wont wake up . Si i have to reset the mini all the time. What is causing this and how could i solve it. The mini is connected with hdmi.

I have Dell Monitor that has 3 computers plugged into different inputs.
When switching between different machines I have to select the new input from the monitor's on screen menu. The Dell doesn't auto detect the new input and switch itself over.
Try a manual selection from the OSD, that might solve your problem.

Problem with Logic Pro and Soft eLicenser on Mountain Lion?

Hi!
I have a bunch of Arturia synths, which requires the Soft eLicenser to work. This has always worked great with Lion, never any problems with eLicenser (never had to open it etc.)
Now - I upgraded to Mountain Lion, and tested my synths to make sure everything was OK, experienced a bunch of problems, and did a full recovery to clean Mountain Lion.
After installing the Arturia synths, and adding my licenses, I installed Logic. Everything worked fine!
BUT!
When I closed an Arturia synth within Logic, or closed Logic after running a project with one of these synths, I couldn't reopen any of these synths within Logic afterwards - In fact, I couldn't open the stand-alones either! And when I tried to open the eLicenser Control Center, it would just say "Reading eLicensers" forever. After a reboot, everything is OK.
I can open and close eLicenser Control Center and standalone synths as many times as I want, as long as I don't open Logic, and then Arturia synths as an AU in Logic.
I found a workaround: Open the eLicenser Control Center, and let in run in the background (cmd+H), and then open Logic. Then I could open Arturia synths and close them, close Logic and reopen etc. without any problems at all. NO PROBLEMS.
Until I close the eLicenser Control Center, then I have to reboot to be able to start it again.
I hope you understand what I mean here. It's a bit hard to explain.
In short terms: Logic makes Soft eLicenser crash when a eLicenser synth has been opened as an AU.
The same problem is when scanning the AU with AU manager. eLicenser window should be open before scanning.
Does ANYBODY have the same problems? Can anyone who has these applications test it out?

So it definitely seems to be a issue with Logic.
I can't force this error in 10.7.X no matter how hard I try, but in 10.8.2 it's definitely Logic messing things up.
Could it be auvaltool which has a bug? Or is that only run with AU manager on validation?
Hopefully this discussion can get some attention, and maybe it could be corrected. I guess a lot of Logic Pro users also has eLicenser Control Center for validation of their products.

Charging Battery - Possible Problem

Hi,
I'm acutally asking on behalf of a friend. He gave his iPod to me to help figure out a whole bunch o' problems. I've figured out everything except for one thing. When I plug it into my laptop to charge, I get the "Do not disconnect" message with the flashing red circle. I let it charge overnight and now (12 hours later) it's still there. I believe this is not normal. The battery appears to be fully charged, so shouldn't I have a different symbol in the display? The only way to get rid of the "Do not disconnect" message appears to be by "ejecting" the ipod from within iTunes.
Any ideas what the cause could be and how to fix?

the do not disconnect symbol has nothing to do with the ipod charging to max . when u eject the ipod from itunes and it stops blinking do not disconnect let it sit for 10 min or so and it should come up with a battery icon...
if its charging there should be a lightning bolt through the center and if the charge is complete it will have a plug on it

Loading webpage problems

hey guys,
Im having a bunch of problems with loading webpages all of a sudden. I have Mozilla, firefox, and netscape. (accidently deleted safari) and cant get it back until I upgrade from 10.2.8 to at least OS 10.3. Anyway, I have problems getting onto Ebay it all started with Mozilla and once I found out that it wouldnt let me on I switched to firefox after 2 to 3 days later I started using netscape now I cant get on at all using any browser. Even on some of my other pages it loads the page just fine but has troubles loading the pictures. Why am I having so many problems I think its a software problem. I took my computer home over thanksgiving cause I was having the same problems before then and hooked it up to the network at my other house and it worked great there I had everything back. Now its all gone again. Why? I dont think its a networking problem but a software issue.( I need help with in the next 12 hours before 2 pm central time).

The Solution?
REINSTALL OSX using the Install DVD.
I called APPLE Support and we went through a troubleshooting process to rule out Network Issues, Software Issues, File Issues and Hardware Issues. This process was very thorough.
In the end, we used the Operating System Installation DVD to reinstall the system, which took about 60 minutes including downloading the updates. Reinstallation did not affect any files or lose any applications. Everything was as I left it -- nothing was missing. Easy.
Now everything is back to normal.

Problems with the Z1

Hi Everyone, Ive had my z1 since around it launched but there are still a bunch of problems with it i wondered if anyone had the same issues susch,
. Lock screen flickering,
. volume buttons on headphones/earphones not working,.
. music sometimes pauses randomly and starts again (usually when unlocking the phone)
. Battery life lasts for around 12 hours when having location services on or less if using any "intensive" apps.
. some contacts disapearing in contacts list but if you get a phone call or text from them it shows the persons name.
Ive switched from an iphone which i had for almost 4 years to this and ive never had these problems with it, Also this is my first android device so i dont know if some of the problems are android related.
Does anyone kow if there is an update coming out?

Sorry to hear about the issues you're having.
I recommend that you first try updating the software in your phone and see if that helps. You can update it using PC Companion or Bridge for Mac: http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/software/computer-software/.
In the first software there was for example an issue with using the buttons on a headset.
If you still have problems after updating the phone, try it in safe mode to make sure that the problems are not caused by an app you installed. See this thread for information on safe mode: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/FAQ/How-to-boot-your-phone-into-safe-mode/m-p/348008.
If you can't see all contacts, open contacts, tap menu (3 dots) and select Filter. Here you can set what contacts that should be displayed.

Various problems using extension manager with command line

Hello all,
We are installing our plugins to CS4/5/5.1 version of Adobe Photoshop as part of our installer and allow the users to select specific versions of Photoshop to install the panel for. There are a few old problems that I wanted to rant about for quite some while and now with a whole bunch of problems that the 5.1 update introduced I feel I just have to voice them. I will limit it to PC only as it seems to be the most troubled platform
#1 As we cannot install our plugin only by using the Extension Manager (simply because it cannot handle all we've to do upon the installation) we have to run commands from within the our installer, non-interactively, of course.
The interface to command line installation is xmancommand.exe (or "Extension manager (Version). exe" - not sure whether it makes any difference. ). Now the first question is how to find this executable on the target machine, from an installer. Users may specify different locations to install the Creative Suite and it certainly does NOT have to be C:\Program Files\...(or %PRGRAMFILES% in general). ATM we are using an odd place in the registry to to find the path to the most recent Extension Manager but first its sometimes overwritten by another installation and in any case it only shows ONE version of the extension manager which of course cannot handle other versions (see #2)
#2 Why the most recent version of Adobe Extension Manager (5.5) cannot install the extension for 5.0? Well, install it actually does, however its disabled for CS5 and it seems that the only way to enable it on this platform is to find previous (CS5) extension manager and to enable it. Oh, actually no - it doesn't work! The only way that I found here working is to find CS5 extension manager first, install the extension there and then use CS5.5 extension manager to enable it. Why do I need both utilities to manage my extensions?!
#3 The program is severely lacking in documentation AND it doesn't produce reasonable output messages, so determining what it can actually support is a puzzle. For example, why "Dreamweaver CS5" is a correct product name and "Photoshop CS5" is not (don't different teams talk to each other)? Ok, lets forget the consistency, but how do I make the utility output the list of all products it supports, in their magic token form that it will actually be understood if passed in in the command line? By trial and error? This menthod btw is also extremely painful: nany times when specifying wrong parameters the program doesn't provide any output and just shrugs "whatever, go figure it yourself"...
#4 Why the only way to enable/disable an extension in Photoshop seems to be using magic "productfamily" keyword that is not even listed on Adobe's help page for command line options (here: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/extensionmanager/cs/using/WSB4845EDD-14E5-476a-B749-FF328830D1 4F.html).? E.g. "xmancommand.exe" -suppress -remove product=Photoshop extension=OurExtension" will ALWAYS fail with a lovely "'Photoshop is not supported by Extension Manager CS5.5." error; I've tried "PhotoshopCS5", "Photoshop CS5", "PhotoshopCS5.1" "Photoshop CS5.1", "Photoshop-12" (mentioned in examples section in http://help.adobe.com/en_US/extensionmanager/cs/using/packaging_extension.pdf ) and a whole bunch of other permutations - none seem to work (see #3). Magic "productfamily=Photoshop" does work. But then it only aims the current version ("CS5.1") and I need it to work for CS5 (I'm not even mentioning CS4...."). Would there be any suggestions?
Really, the question is, how do we, third-party developers, are supposed to interact with the command-line utility without knowing where it is, what product names is capable to work with and without being able to target specific platforms (i86 vs x64 anyone (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/672537)? CS5 vs CS5.1 (above)?). I don't know what your test cases are for the command line tool (if any!), but this is simply insane, folks, simply insane.

I am sorry for the poor documentation of Extension Manager which causes you so much trouble.
1. You can use BridgeTalk API to ask specific version of Extension Manager to do something. There is sample in packaging_extension.pdf about this. You don't need to know the installation path of Extension Manager. One thing to note is that the value of bt.target is version specific, i.e. "exman-5.0", "exman-5.5" send this message to different version of Extension Manager, so you can change this value to install/enable/disable/remove extensions using different version of Extension Manager. More detailed documentation of BridgeTalk can be found by clicking "Help" menu then clicking "Javascript Tools Guide CS5" in "Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit CS5".
2. Specific version of Extension Manager only manage extensions for corresponding version of product. You should use Extension Manager CS5 to install extensions for Photoshop CS5. The reason that the extension you installed for Photoshop CS5.1 using Extension Manager CS5.5 is displayed for Photoshop CS5 in Extension Manager CS5 is that two versions of Photoshop specified the same directory for Extension Manager to manage extensions. This is a defect and will cause some problems if multiple versions of Photoshop co-existed in one machine. But "to find previous (CS5) extension manager and to enable it" should work for you, I guess you use command line to enable it and specify wrong product name (see #3) so that it doesn't work.
3. When using command line, you should specify "product" attribute with the name displayed at the left panel of Extension Manager. So "Photoshop CS5 32" is correct. Remember to enclose it with double quote because of existence of space character.
4. As above mentioned, use display name of Photoshop, and call proper version of Extension Manager by BridgeTalk.
