A Fix for Safari 3.2.1 Not Responding

Like many Safari 3.2.1 stopped responding every time it was launched, starting immediately after the update. It would hang loading pages shortly after launching and I had to Force Quit it to exit. I did all the rubber chicken voodoo with repairing permissions, etc. without avail but found that removing all internet plug-ins and Safari Enhancer seems to have fixed it. I'm reinstalling them one by one now and so far Safari hasn't crashed.
I can't say whether this will fix the problem for others. In any case, this is the first time a Safari update has caused this problem for me. It would appear that the updater does not properly handle the plug-ins. I hope Apple learns how this problem came to be pushed out to us and prevents its reoccurrence. I don't like wasting time fixing these kinds of problems and am starting to test Firefox back to back against Safari to see if I like it as much (or more).

I was a reasonably happy Safari user until v 3.2, which not only proved hopelessly unstable, but also prevented the use of the AcidSearch plug-in that opened-up the choice of search engines (Firefox-style)
There always seems to be a bit of a miscomprehension with Safari 'preventing' the use of some extensions. These type of extensions use undocumented interfaces to insert themselves into the running code of Safari.
The whole reason these interfaces are undocumented is that they are liable to change, which they periodically do as to the whims of the Apple developers.
Apple don't provide any public hooks to allow extensions like these to work across all versions, and never have. Maybe they should, but they don't.

  • 1Password version 2 browser button fix for Safari 5

Duplicate your 1Password 2 app (control click > Duplicate). It will make a copy called
    "1Password copy.app"
Download 3.2.1, mount the .dmg, open the app with finder (Show Package Contents),
    Contents > Extensions > WebKitExtension.Bundle.
Control click > copy to copy the WebKitExtension.Bundle app.
Open with finder the 1Password copy.app (Show Package Contents), Contents > Extensions >
    WebKitExtension.Bundle
Replace (paste) the WebKitExtension.Bundle app with the 3.2.1 version.
Use the modified 1Password copy.app to reinstall the browser extensions. Close after extension
    installation.
(note: using the modified copy will cause a nag screen to be displayed every time you open Safari 5)
Reopen your regular 1Password app and Safari 5 should work (without the nag screen).
Works fine on Snow Leopard - did not test on Leopard.

    Hi Bee:
    This is for 1Password 2 Version 2.12.1 (build 7671), not for 1Password 3 Version 3.2.1.
(for those who have not upgraded yet).
I don't know if agile will ever offer a Safari 5.0 fix for 2.12.1 or not.
There are a lot of folks like me who own a multiple (family) license for 1Password Version 2.
Some of the older machines will never see Snow Leopard and aside from Safari 5, all current
browsers are still supported by 1Password 2.
I would probably upgrade, but truly, in my case, 1Password 3 has no new features that I really
want. I don't run Safari in 64 bit mode. It doesn't run any faster or better that I can tell (in 64 bit
mode), and it breaks the 32 bit plugins in 64 bit mode. Besides, Safari is tolerable (sometimes),
but it sure isn't my favorite Browser.
I am a basic person too, fancy prancy stuff just irritates me, I like 1Password 2's interface a lot
better. They should offer different skins for version 3, make everyone happy.
If Agile would support even one of my 2 favorite Browsers (Seamonkey and Opera), I would
probably upgrade, but instead I am forced to use Safari (ho-hum) or Firefox (Yuk!).

  • Safari will no longer open.  I was using firefox until I could find a fix for safari.  I made the mistake of changing my default search to firebox later for convenience and now I can't open my system preference or many safari or apple linked files.

Safari will no longer open. It just goes back to my desktop.  When I right click on the safari icon in my dashboard it says it is open.  I was using firefox until I could find a fix for safari.  I made the mistake of changing my default search to firebox later for convenience and now I can't open my system preference or many safari or apple linked files. Some of my emails from trusted sites won't open and does the same thing.
I upgraded my original system from 10.4.11 to I believe 10.6. something about a year or so ago.  I thought about re installing my safari app but when I go to open anything connected to safari my screen goes back to the desktop.  I cant open any files that I have on my desktop that I set up through safari, like my banking program. Prior to changing system preference to safari default I was able to open those files and now I can't get into change it back.  Can you guide me through this?
    Thanks,
    Betty

Try running the 10.6.8 combo update.
    10.6.8 Combo Updater
    System Preferences or Safari Preferences?
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Wow, that's an interesting one - seems as though the sharedCursorPane has
some hard requirement that the base App be mx (this isn't terribly
surprising, considering it was built with the mx components, but it's still
a bug). Can you link against the source code (provided for player 10 now!),
and change that line in sharedCursorPane :
    From :
    Application(mx.core.Application.application).stage.removeEventListener(Mouse
    Event.MOUSE_MOVE, onMouseMove);
    To :
    stage.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE, onMouseMove);
and see if that works for you? I can't honestly tell why we're using the
line that was there... It's possible this was a workaround for another
issue. Anyhow, if you wouldn't mind being the guinea pig for this one, we
can get to the bottom of it.

  • Fix for Apple Mobile Device Services not starting

Finally a fix for Apple Mobile Device Services not starting. Basically I got this from someone else in these forums and it worked. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data\Apple and delete any file in there that says Apple Mobile Device Services (I understand these are cached files...I had about 8 files to delete). Next go to your control panel, click on Add/Delete programs, find Apple Mobile Device Support and delete (remove) it. Once this is all done do not reboot, rather open itunes and go to Help menu /Check for Updates and update to the latest version. This will install the latest version of iTunes and also a new version of Apple Mobile Device Services. Next reboot and it should work for many of you...it did for me. Open iTunes and plug in your device...good luck. I wrote this from memory so if some of the phrases don't match exactly what you see I apologize. Also, this worked for me on a Windows XP computer.

Thanks for posting this, my iTunes randomly started saying the Apple Mobile Device was stopped, and apple's solutions didn't help. I hope this one will, but what do I do if I have the latest iTunes, so it doesn't update? Wait till they come out with an update? It says I need to run the iTunes installer, but I can't find that. Please help, this is really annoying me...=(

  • Why does the "fix" for firefox copying and pasting not work?

I did the fix a few times and restarted firefox, with no success. Also, I installed the latest version of firefox and it is slower now. I have to use firefox for school, otherwise I would just find another way.

In what way is Firefox slow?
Is this all the time or only with loading web pages?
What kind of fix do you mean with: ''Why does the "fix" for firefox copying and pasting not work'' ?

  • Flash Player (Safari Internet plug-in) (not responding)

"Flash Player (Safari Internet plug-in) (not responding)"
I've been getting this message about every 10-15 minutes for the last week. I've taken to just leaving my "Force Quit Applications" window open so I can kill Flash Player as quickly and efficiently as possible. (It turns out that just doing that also force-quits the accompanying "Safari Web Content (not responding)" message.) Then I'm good for another 10-15 minutes until another opportunity rolls around for Flash Player to freeze my browser screen.
This problem started shortly after I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.10.3 (+ supplement) and Safari 8.0.5. I've downloaded Flash Player 3 times in the last week (most recently Version 17.0.0.169 earlier today), but to no avail. The only thing that seemed to help was trashing the Flash Player plug-in from my "Internet Plug-Ins" folder. But then, of course, I was SOL the next time I fired up a website that required it.
How can I make this problem go away?

Please try disabling hardware acceleration.  See the instructions in the video troubleshooting guide for details:

  • My fix for Safari 5 beach ball, hang, not responding

    Hello,
So many people experienced problems with safari after upgraded to S5 and me too! Beach balls, not responding, crash, quitting, hang.. Etc. I tried clearing cache, reset safari, delete .plst, uninstall/reinstall safari all yield to similar problem.
Here's what i have done to fix mine.
For slow internet try to change your DNS to:
    *Google DNS*
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    *Level3 Com DNS*
    4.4.2.1
    4.4.2.2
    OpenDNS
    165.21.100.88
    165.21.83.88
For safari frequent beach balls, hang or not responding.
    If beach ball occurs,
    1) open activity monitor (safari would be in red font and saying that "not responding)
    2) Don't quit your safari instead look for flash plugin that is running and try to quit that process.
    3) See if beach ball gone, if yes then problem could be your flash plugin.
    4) Go to Adobe site and download latest flash and test your Flash (+http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/+)
5)Try to test that macro media shockwave player if it works (+http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/+)
when i test mine it says that it run only in 32 bit mode so i turn my safari in 32bit and it able to display that logo which means its working.
So far i never encounter again beach balls(knock to the wood 3x) for a week of usage
I think turning safari to 32 bit mode solves my problem.
In windows7 machine i encountered internet explorer 64bit some pages also not able to display(but no hang) due to Flash player unable to support 64bit, need to run in 32 bit.
Hope my fix to my MBP can benefit others too...
or any of you out there can give or enlighten more on this issue?

    HI,
    crash
I think turning safari to 32 bit mode solves my problem.
If it turns out Safari crashes again, post a crash report.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.
Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

  • Here's a fix for Safari hanging and taking down the system..

There appears to be a serious bug in Mac OS X's lookupd which can pull the rug right out from under Mac OS X Tiger. While this bug could possibly be triggered in a number of different ways, there has been a recent rash of reports that have been tracked to some mainstream Web sites such as FoxNews.com using links to an adware site js.adsonar.com. This document describes a quick way out of the hang and a simple way to block links to js.adsonar.com from taking down Tiger again. While this doesn't fix the underlying lookupd bug itself, it prevents Mac OS X from hanging, while allowing you to continue using Web sites like FoxNews.com with full Java and JavaScript access enabled.
The symptoms of this problem are as follows:
    • You're surfing the web and the page you are on fails to completely load.
    • No further pages will load in your browser.
    • You can switch to other applications that may already be running and save any open files.
    • You can no longer launch any additional applications, their icons will bounce in the dock for a while and then they will just stop bouncing.
    • You can no longer use any other Finder functions.
    • You can no longer use command-option-escape to force quit.
    • You can not log out, restart or shut down.
Apparently these symptoms indicate that a low-level component of Mac OS X, lookupd, has hung. Since lookupd is used by many other parts of Mac OS X, it effectively hangs Mac OS X itself.
If this sounds like a problem you are having, try the steps in the following link to fix it.
Mac OS X Tiger lookupd bug & adsonar fix
    Hope it helps,

    Hi Bee,
There is indeed "such a bug", though you may be fortunate enough to not be affected. Unfortunately MANY others are affected by this. I spent three days helping track this down (many of those 38 posts were while tracking it down in the Tiger discussions) and find a fix to this and thought that others might benefit by my efforts... By the way it's NOT a Safari bug, it happens in any browser, it's a "lookupd" bug which may be triggered by surfing to certain sites which contain links to "js.adsonar.com", which if you have JavaScript enabled can hang lookupd and take down your entire system... consider yourself lucky that it hasn't happened to you...

I only posted this fix to the specific threads where people were having Safari hang, incase it might help them. Forgive me for trying to help them... I thought that was the point of these boards and that was why they started threads about their issues... I'd be willing to bet that this fix will indeed fix many of their problems...
I also posted one additional new topic here on the Safari board and one on the Tiger board for new readers looking for solutions to the same system hangs they may be getting while surfing.
If this fix does indeed help any of you other readers, please post back here so that Bee can indeed see that I'm not just posting here to waste my time...

  • Fix for Safari 5 hanging up with loading pages

After reading the other extensive threads on this topic, one of the articles linked in those threads that helped me the most is found here... http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
The solution appears to be the DNS problem for many new Safari 5 users (if not most). The article linked above demystified DNS for me. I added the OpenDNS numbers in the windows entitled "DNS Server" at System Preferences > Network. Safari 5 on my computer now works at lightning speed. The added benefit to doing this is that it is much faster than my previous DNS servers, and it is more secure.
I hope that Apple will spread the word about this simple and fast solution, because many Safari 5 users are very frustrated right now.

I also have problem with hanging up freezing up and all the above and actually Safari 5 made my entire computer inclosing other browsers I use very slow now,
so I hope Apple come up with a fast fix for this soon because a lot of people have problems I have three laptops in my family my kids tonight said they have the same exact problem as far as using the DNS that you were talking about I'm afraid that I would run into some security issues I am not sure if it is something Apple would also suggest to all the people that are having this problem. I have not seen any feedback yet on open DNS

Start Mac (mine:PB17, 10.7.3, 8GB ram, no FlashBack trojan), nothing running but activity monitor. Start Safari (no java, no flash, no extensions). CPU jumps into the 90+% and active memory starts ticking upward at 20MB per second until all ram is used and the system starts swapping and everything slows to a crawl. Also, Safari un-quitable. Only force-quit works, at which point all memory & cpu use goes back to normal.
Does all this with java and extensions enabled too. And other apps going.

I also have problem with hanging up freezing up and all the above and actually Safari 5 made my entire computer inclosing other browsers I use very slow now,

  • WMODE fix for Safari

My problem is that I have some suckerfish dropdown menus over
a flash element in my site. As most of us know, using some z-index
trickery and wmode-transparent takes care of the dropdown always
showing up on top of the flash element in most browsers. Except
Safari, because of an admitted bug in the browser, Safari can't
    render wmode correctly.
I searched high and low for a solution and one day came
across a small script in your .htaccess file that tells Safari to
render the wmode correctly. I plopped it into the site and it fixed
the issue. My .htaccess file was written over by someone else and
now I can't for the life of me find that script again. Does anybody
know where I could find that, or what the solution would be?
    Thank you,
    Ben

    Hi there Ben
I'm afraid you confused something, the htaccess has not much
    to do with the Wmode
and it can't control nor influence such options, it is for
    configuration changes per
directory . Wmode is strictly browser option/feature, some
    simply supports while other
    not and that's beyond Fixable.
Safari 1.0 did not support wmode at all if I'm not wrong, the
    newer version perhaps.

  • Less destructive fix for the "original file could not be found" issue

+(Note: this is mostly a copy of the post I just submitted in reply to http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6785594#6785594)+
Most solutions to the "The song xxx could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" issue involve deleting iTunes library files, deleting-then-re-importing everything from iTunes, and other destructive techniques. I found an easier fix for this, but it might be (a) specific to libraries on a network drive (NAS) or (b) specific to me. YMMV, but give it a try. This was on a Mac, so a Windows solution might exist with the same technique. Please post here and let me know if this works for you!
After some investigating and trial-and-error, I discovered that if I viewed a list of songs in Finder, iTunes could find the files again. For example:
*Double click on a song in iTunes and get the "original file could not be found..." error. Do not say 'Yes' to locating it.
*Open Finder and locate that Folder of songs
*Double-click on another song from that album. It should work.
So, my fix: *run a command that lists/touches every file in your iTunes music folder.*
    For Macs:
    *Open Terminal
*Run this: *ls -R /Path/To/Your/iTunes\ Music \Folder/* (note how you 'escape' spaces in the folder name with back-slashes).
    Windows:
    *Start - Run - cmd
*Run this: dir /s \Path\To\Your\"iTunes Music Folder" (note that you escape spaces by quoting the dir name.)
My NAS is named "VAULT" so my command was "ls -R /Volumes/VAULT/My\ Music/" You will see the files being listed at light speed -- ignore this. It will run for a while, depending on how many files you have, about 30 seconds for me. After executing this I could listen to any music file in iTunes!
But, every time I lost my connection to my NAS, such as waking from sleep mode, I had to run it again. So I created an Automator application and a Apple Script to run it from within iTunes so I can run it any time I need to. If you don't want to do that, just run the command I specified. If you want to download my Automator app, or see instructions on how to create your own, check out my blog post: http://40withegg.com/2008/3/8/mac-attack-making-itunes-find-those-original-files -especially-on-a-nas
With any luck, my post will be *completely unnecessary* soon because Apple will find a real solution to this.

    Jeffe hello,
I have seen more problems created by the consolidate command than I have ever seen fix things... I'm not saying it does not work but what it does do and what it does not is very hard to work out for most and major problems are the result...
to sort your problem do this...
    1. Open your iTunes folder in the Home Music folder and make a backup copy of the iTunes Library file and put on the desktop.
    2. Start iTunes and in the Library sort on the Heading 'Date added' ... you may need to install it... control/click on heading-bar and select from popup menu.
    3. When you have sorted scroll to half way and you will see the songs are split evenly... select the ones you want to remove with a shift/click and hit delete key... say no about move to trash for now.
    4. Check that everything is as you want it... if so carry on... if not come back and tell me what happened.
    5. Quit iTunes and put the iTunes Library file in the iTunes folder in a safe place like your Documents folder... drag the copy from desktop and put it in the iTunes folder.
    6. Check the name is correct on the 'copy' edit it to be iTunes Library.
    7. Start iTunes by double/clicking on the file and go through steps 2 & 3 again but this time when you delete say yes about move to trash... don't empty it yet 1st check that all is OK with your library.
You can edit the good files that you are left with but the addition of '01' in the name will not have any adverse effect on them at all... editing with an Applescript is very easy.
take care Jeffe and let's know how you get on or if you run into any unforeseen problems ... TP
