A java unicode problem against MySQL
Hi members,
need your suggestions regarding a weird problem.
I have a standalone java utility which is used parse xmls containing english and hindi text and store the data in MySQL. I can see data stored as hindi in the MySQL database. the data is correctly stored in the database.
All character sets and collations seem to be set correct. Character set in Mysql itable, columns and database is UTF8 and Collations are utf8_unicode_ci.
But the problem now is that, when i try to retrieve the data from the database - the hindi text comes out as ???????.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
MySQL 5.0
JDBC - 5.0
Connection uri = String uri = "jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/DATABASE_NAME?useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF8";
Thanks,
VK

A "?" is generated when you try to convert some text into an encoding that doesn't support the Unicode codepoints used in the text. For example, if you try to convert 3 Unicode codepoints from the Hindi area into ISO-8859-1 (which basically supports the latin alphabet only) you'll get 3 question marks.
How do you print that text? If you use System.out.println() and are using Windows, then you should know that the Windows command line window (used by cmd.exe and java.exe) only has very limited support for text outside the current locales code page.
Try displaying the String using Swing (JOptionPane is probably the easiest way) or print the separate values of the characters of the String to verify that they are restored correctly.

JDOQL matches clause fails against MySQL
Hi Folks
I'm using Kodo 4.1.1 against MySQL 5.0.27-community-nt with driver mysql-connector-java-5.0.4-bin.jar.
When I use the "contains" clause in JDOQL for a simple regex match I get an exception.
The filter clause is:
customerName.matches('.*oo.*')
i.e. find all customers with names that contain two consecutive lower-case O characters.
The exception is:
java.sql.SQLException: Parameter index out of range (2 > number of parameters, which is 1).

Is this a known issue with MySQL and is there a workaround?
Thanks, Robin.
Edited by [email protected] at 02/07/2007 5:45 AMHi, Robin!
Thanks for posting the resolution. FYI, this is actually a known issue, and can be tracked at http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OPENJPA-80. I just committed a fix for the problem.

Difficulty with java Unicode for internationalization
First, my appologies for the cross-post. I'm not sure if this is a
configuration issue, simple java / jsp problem or something others
performing internationalization may have encountered.
We're generating UTF-8 HTML pages using .jsp's, Weblogic 5.1 sp5, jdk
1.2.2 and NT 4.0 w/ the Euro patch.
We have the ability to serve UTF-8 encoded data from flat files and our
database but we're having some problems serving Unicode that have been
"escaped" into java variables.
If we use the &#nnnnn (nnnn is decimal unicode value for character) HTML
method for displaying unicode characters, they display just fine.
However, if we create a java String or char and push a character into it
via \uNNNNN (NNNNN is hex unicode value for character) and then display
the content of this variable through the HTML page, something goes
awry. Here's an example:
<% String checkChar = new String("\u0000");%>
<td class="smallfont"><% checkChar = "\u00A5";%><%=checkChar%></td>
<td class="smallfont"><% checkChar = "\u20A5";%><%=checkChar%></td>
<td class="smallfont"><% checkChar = "\u30A5";%><%=checkChar%></td>
This should display the Yen symbol, Mil Sign and a Katakana small 'u',
respectively. Oddly enough, it displays the Yen symbol all three
times. I've had similar results with other series of Unicode characters
(several Unicode characters that share the same second hex digit.)
If you want to see this via HTML, check out
http://dev.slingshotcorp.com/char.jsp.
We've added "-Dfile.encoding=UTF8" to the java invocation in
startWebLogic.cmd and we've verified that the setting is persisted into
the .jsp. Unfortunately, our output isn't affected.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? It appears that java is somehow
assuming the first hex digit is always "00." Does this sound familiar
to anyone?
Thanks - JacksonHello Earl,
I was having similar problem.
I was able to display &#nnnnn and the chinese character
from database, but not \unnnn.
I think Kevin Burns was making a good suggestion by
giving page directive in your jsp file (UTF8) 'cause that's what
I did AND it started to display \unnnn just fine from
my property bundle files. You may give a try!
But my problem is that after I gave the UTF8 page directive,
the stuff I'm reading from db (oracle 8.1.6, with NLS_LANG)
displayed as garbage. Do you think it's because that
WLS supports only Unicode?
thanks,

Has any else come across this gem? I think this is the root of my problem.
"Caution: Currently, WebLogic JSP only supports 8-bit character sets. "
http://www.inf.fu-berlin.de/lehre/WS00/SWT/BEA/documentation/docs51/classdocs/API_jsp.html
The most recent Weblogic documentation has revised this statement to:
"WebLogic JSP supports mulitbyte character sets according to the Unicode
standard. "
http://www.weblogic.com/docs51/classdocs/API_jsp.html#wljsp
We believe that the 16-bit characters we're passing around through Java
variables are being cliped to 8-bit characters as they're written to HTML.
Does anyone know when (which service pack) provided WL 5.1 JSP with the
ability to handle multi-byte charactersets? We're currently using WL 5.1
sp5.

Yes, there is MySql running on 3306.The exception says it is not. This can have the following (logical) causes:
1) MySQL is actually not running on 3306.
2) MySQL does not allow connections.
3) Some firewall software is blocking MySQL.
4) Some firewall software is blocking port 3306.
And in the future please don't mark the topic as answered while your actual problem is not solved. I was under the impression that it was answered right after my first reply and when you confirmed that there was no MySQL server at post 3306. -

Trying to get my java program connected to MySQL
This works perfectly in the Eclipse IDE area that I have but when I run the same program on the Net Beans 3.6 IDE area it gives me a 'not suitable driver' error. To note these are both on the same computer. I would really like to get the Net Beans 3.6 IDE working because that is what I am most familiar with using. If you know of the problem why one IDE area recognizes the driver where the next does not I would sure like to know. Somebody passed the idea that when the 3.6 area is executed there are multiple instances running and it resets the ClassPath(I think they where shooting in the dark but it is a lead none the less). Anyway if anybody has had this problem please enlighten me, Thank-You.
The ClassPath is set to the following:
ClassPath = C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_02\lib;C:\unzipped\mysql-connector- java-3.1.7\mysql-connector-java-3.1.7;C:\Program Files
\Java\jdk1.5.0_02\jre\lib\ext;
This is the code:
import java.sql.*;
import java.sql.Connection;
import java.sql.DriverManager;
import java.sql.SQLException;
public class Connect2 {
public static void main(String[] args) {
try {
// The newInstance() call is a work around for some
// broken Java implementations
Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
} catch (Exception ex) {
System.out.println("HERE");
try {
String url = "jdbc:mysql://localhost/test";
String username = "root";
String password = "password";
Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(
"jdbc:mysql://localhost/test", "root", "password");
Statement c = conn.createStatement();
c.execute("insert into green values('richmond')");
c.execute("select * from green");
ResultSet rs = c.getResultSet();
while (rs.next()) {
System.out.println(rs.getString(1));
// Do something with the Connection
} catch (SQLException ex) {
// handle any errors
System.out.println("SQLException: " + ex.getMessage());
System.out.println("SQLState: " + ex.getSQLState());
System.out.println("VendorError: " + ex.getErrorCode());
}There are some oddities with the DriverManager when it comes to registering drivers taken from a different ClassLoader, though I don't see how that would apply here, unless the IDE itself is loading one of the classes.
There's a facility in DriverManager to enumerate the registered drivers. It might be worth doing that and seeing their class names. -
Can't run non-UNICODE-DbSl against UNICODE database
Hi everyone. I get this error during the update of Solution Manager 7.1 SPS4 (dual stack) to SPS10. It is a green install. This happens during the
phase PREP_EXTRACT/PREIMP! Of the ABAP stack. Step 5.2. I do not see a lot of people with this problem, so I assume it is something I am doing wrong, as it is my first time using the tool SUM.
Details of the system:
Solution Manager 7.1 SPS4
Windows 2008 R2 64 bit
Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 64 bit SP1
Central installation type with all components on
the same host
Kernel level 600
Here is what I have done so far:
Downloaded the media as described in the installation
guide.
Worked my way through the install using the
Software Provision Manager 1.0
Updated the Kernel from level 401 to 600, by
copying the files from the download folder to the F:\usr\sap\SM1\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64
folder. This is the folder that is assigned to the DIR_CT_RUN parameter.
I start the STARTUP.BAT file in the SUM folder.
I then start the SUM GUI and run through the
steps and in step 3 I map the Stack configuration file (XML) to one listed in
the folder “51047130\DATA” called “SPS10_stack.xml”
Then I
get to 5.2 where the system stops with this error:

Persistent Store Problems for MYSQL Enhanced Cluster With OpenMQ 4.4
I am trying to implement an enhanced cluster with failover. I have edited the config files for each broker instance for a persistent store. I have appended the following to each of the config.properties files:
imq.brokerid=myclusterinstanceINSTANCE1 # I substitute INSTANCE2 for INSTANCE1 for broker #2
imq.persist.store=jdbc
imq.persist.jdbc.dbVendor=mysql
imq.persist.jdbc.mysql.property.url=jdbc:mysql://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:3306/test
imq.persist.jdbc.mysql.user=user1
imq.persist.jdbc.mysql.needpassword=true
imq.persist.jdbc.mysql.password=mypass
imq.cluster.ha=true
imq.cluster.clusterid=mycluster
imq.cluster.brokerlist=xxx.xxx.xxx.x:37676,yyy.yyy.yyy.y:37676
I then create the persistence storage with "imqdbmgr create tbl". When I view the data in the tables it creates, I have one row. Under Store_Version, I have 410. Under LOCK_ID, it has NULL. When I go to start the brokers with imqbrokerd, I get the following error:
ERROR [B3198]: Error initializing cluster manager:

I believe this error is attributed to the NULL value under LOCK_ID. I think that the value under LOCK_ID should be the name of the broker from the config file (even though I specified them in the config files). Any ideas?? THANKS!Just some pointers -- maybe this will be of use:
If you haven't already read it, please take a look at the [ MySQL setup guide|https://mq.dev.java.net/OpenMQ_MySQLCluster_Setup_Guide.html] .
We recommend using NDB Data-store of MySQL Cluster, though this isn't an absolute requirement. Due to some issues we have found with earlier versions, we recommend using MySQL Cluster, 7.0.9 or better (the current version is 7.0.16, or 7.1.5). Either of these would contain Connector/J.
I'd also recommend using the latest version -- MQ 4.4update2 (just in case you happen to have an older copy). There were many minor improvements in the integration with MySQL from the original 4.4 release, to update 2. This is linked at the MQ download page: [https://mq.dev.java.net/downloads.html] -

Unicode problem in PCD translation
hi,
I am translating the PCD content in german, french and finding some special charachter which I am replacing with HTML unicode as below mentioned.
English -Upcoming Events and Training
French -Calendrier des événements et formations
It is getting translation properly in top level navigation but not getting translation in detail level navigation. well I have tried Java Unicode also.
I am doing translation work from "Portal content tranlation"
Please provide me your suggestion.
Regards,
SanjeevHi,
I was using the same french character first time, but it was showing some special character, A1/4 like character, so I decided to move to html unicode.
IS there any setting required at the iview and page,workset level? Why Java unicode is not working since it is universal, It is printing the same I give like \u00e9

Java Web Start and MySQL driver
I am trying to do a simple query on a MySQL database using the JDBC driver from http://www.mysql.com/downloads/api-jdbc-stable.html When I run my app, it works exactly as it should (connects to db, queries, displays in text boxes). When I package it and run it with Java Web Start, it gives the output below on the console. I have set security to all permissions in the jnlp file.
Thanks,
Andy

Hi all,
I was looking for this java programming problem which had to do with a large building and there was some gallons of water involved in it too somehow and we had to figure out the height of the buiding using java. This problem is also in one of the java books and I really need to find out all details about this problem and the solution. NEED HELP!!
Thanks
macYes, it will. The water will drain from the bottom of
the tank until the pressure from the water inside the
tank equals the pressure from the pipe. In other
words, without a pump, the water will drain out until
there is the same amount of water in the tank as in
the pipe The water pressure depends on the depth of the water, not the volume. So once the depth of the water inside the pipe reaches the same depth as the water inside the tank it will stop flowing. This will never be above the height of the tank.
I found this applet which demonstrates our problem. If you run it you can drag the guy up to the top, when water in his hose reaches the level of the water in the tank it will stop flowing out. -
Java Uninstall Problem
This all came about because of a failed uninstall, using Your Uninstaller.
The {Java runtime which is all I want) is not listed now & I tried all the other fix bad uninstall type features, all to no avail.} )
When I DL & run the latest package (jxpiinstall-6u11-fcs-bin-b90-windows-i586-25_nov_2008.exe}
& run it I get:
1st message:
"This software has already been installed on your computer.
Would you like to install it?"
If I say no, it exits.
If I say yes, I get this second message:
:This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."
So Now I have no Java & have no idea what to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Neuromancer23Sorry...after posting it i realized there was a more appropriate forum, of which it took quiet awhile to find.)
Now that I know where to find the forum list I will never double-post again.
I'll close the question if I can
