A reason to keep PSE 3, old filters and plug ins

One of my absolute favourite filter sets is KPT Collection by Corel.
When getting my new Mac, I realized that KPT was no longer supported by Corel, I had to call them when I couldnt install it into PSE. They said that it was being discontinued. And it would not work with the new Max OS Leopard.
So I went back to my older Mac with Tiger, and tried the disc, no dice. So I found a really old version of PSE 2 on a Mac with OS 9, and dragged the KPT program out of it and into PSE 3 with the Tiger OS. It WORKED! And now I have KPT Collection working fine.
Why would they ever discontinue such a fun program as KPT, I will never know.
Anyway, if you love KPT as much as I do and can still get version PSE 3, go for it.

You likely need to change the default application(s) assigned for opening files to point to the new ones. HOw you do that depends on which operating system you have. If you search Google you should be able to find out how to change the default programs for different files.

Anybody can access the App Store - even without an Apple ID.
What are you saying? You cannot access your purchased apps with your new ID? If you are, that is the way that it works. If you set up a new Apple ID - you can't update the apps that you bought with the old ID. You have to continue to update the purchased apps with the old ID and password since purchases are always tied to the ID that made the purchases.
If you need to sign into your new ID you can do that in Settings>iTunes and App Stores>Apple ID. Tap th old ID and sign out then sign in with the new one.

PSE 7.0 Problem with Plug-ins

Hi, I have the same problem as "Fred5222" in his post from Aug. 16, 2009.
I have installed a PSE 7.0 compatible Plug-in from www.alienskin.com, called "Bokeh" but PSE deos not take this Plug-in. That means, that I cannot
find any link to this prgramm in PSE. Normaly the link is to find under the entry "filters" in PSE, but there is nothing to find from "alien skin" or "Bokeh".
Meanwhile I had assistants from the support of alien skin, because they know about an installing problem of this software under PSE 7.0. But also
under consideration of the in this regard specific guidlines I didnt have success. I also tryed to make a link under preadjustments in PSE, but this also failed.
I also tryed other Plug-ins from alien skin, but all of them doent work together with PSE 7.0 although this software is listed under requirements.
What next? I have no more Idea.

You can try this.
1. Launch PSE
2. Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Plugins
3. In the Additional Path, Provide the path of the Bokeh Plugin
4. Click OK
5. Relaunch PSE

Using old, unmaintained Kodak plug ins

Dear Adobe Staff, please take action to make Kodak Plug Ins possible for Macintosh CS6.
Aparently, they are unable to integrate them into the new version of Photoshop without your participation.
Below is their reply.
Please be aware that our Plug-Ins are 32-bit. CS5 allowed for our Plug-Ins to be installed in 32-bit mode on the Mac, but this was not offered for CS6. You might check with Adobe to see if they will offer this in future.
We are currently evaluating the possibility of updating our Kodak Professional Image Enhancement Plug-Ins to 64-bit, but have no definite plans as of now. Please periodically visit our website for any updates to our plug-in availability.

It's not that they don't allow for it. A 64 bit Photoshop application simply can't call on 32 bit plug-ins.
Adobe has moved away from providing 32 bit Macintosh software on purpose. As I recall, Apple may not provide the 32 bit development environment they need, and Adobe's move is not dissimilar from Apple's clear philosophy of quickly dropping support for old things. By the wording of their response, Kodak clearly recognizes the need to move up to 64 bits. But they're no longer really a happening company, so it's unlikely they'll be funding new development efforts.

Is there really any reason to keep "On My Mac" calendars and contacts?

I was wondering if anyone has deleted their "On My Mac" contacts or calendars in Address Book or iCal since upgrading to iOS5 and Lion.
I haven't had any real issues by having both (aside from seeing duplicate birthdays in iCal), but is it really necessary? I prefer to keep things as streamlined and simple as possible, and would consider deleting my "On My Mac" data if there's no downfall. Is there any chance iCloud could crash, and I would potentially lose everything?
Thoughts/comments appreciated.

I just have iTunes sync with the Address book & calendar on iCloud, but I wouldn't delete it from my Mac or I would lose my contacts if I lose Internet connectivity.

For some reason all of my ad ons and plug ins have to be reinstalled every time I restart firefox. I don't know how or why they keep getting disabled or uninstalled. Help?

Connecting kurzweil sp88 to GB I want to connect my Kurzweil sp88 to GB. The Kurzweil has a baffling array of buttons and possible MIDI channels. It also has the old style MIDI plug ins. I've got the MIDI out connected to my MacBook Pro via USB adapter.

First of all I do not own this keyboard. But a quick look at the manual (found on the internet) says that when first powered up the SP88 is in Internal Sounds mode. Meaning you hear the sounds selected when playing the keyboard. It also stated that the default Midi Transmit Channel is Midi Channel #1.
Looks like you would need to go to the SP88 Keyboard's MIDI SETUP and simply select LOCAL OFF. Now the keyboard should be ready to transmit Midi Out only and no internal sounds should be heard.
Next you may or may not need to do this but you might need to go into the Utilities Folder found in your Applications Folder on your Mac and double click AUDIO MIDI SETUP the keyboard Icon. Figure #1 below.
Next you need to make a physical connection from the Midi Out of the SP88 to the Midi In on your Midi Interface. Figure #3 below. You may need to Click on Add Device first. Figure #2 below.
In the examples shown below I have a Yamaha Electronic Drum Kit that is Midi Out only... not USB out. I had to plug a Midi cable from the Midi Out Port on the back of my Drum Module to the Midi In Port on the back of my Motu 828 Audio Inferface which is connected to my Mac. Next I created the Audio Interface and Drum Module "Devices" as mentioned above.
I then double clicked on the Drum Module and made my Midi Out Selections. Figure #4 Below. And once it was setup and the icons closed I used my mouse to draw a virtual cable connection from the Drum Module Out to the Audio Interface In. Figure #3 below. This is how I got my Midi Devices to talk to one another.
Once you have made your setup as I have outlined create a MIDI Instrument Track in Garageband, select an instrument for example a Piano then Record Enable that track in Garageband and see if you now hear what you are playing. In this example the SP88 is a Midi Controller only and you will only hear sounds selected in Garageband which is what you want.
Keep in midi your setup may be different than mine. You can keep your SP88 Keyboard on the default Midi Channel #1. That would be a good place to start. Garageband receives Midi on all channels.

Unplugging the old extreme and plugging in the new 802.11n

I had trouble getting the new exteme to work like the old one. I got WPA2 security to work but not the old extreme. I spoke with an apple tech. We reset both stations, established the new network, then joined the extreme to that and everything works fine now.
Two caveats:
The new 802.11n will not support extending the range and joining a wireless network (as in using the extreme for Itunes) at the same time. It is either one or the other and not both as before. This might be fixed in the future.
The 2. is this- is the old airport extreme base station just a paperweight now or is there a some useful thing it can do in the new setup (maybe extend the range of the network?)
I definitely notice faster internet connections with the new extreme base station.

You could set up a Dual Band network.
It means that there is one big network but with two base stations;
I have one supporting 802.11g 2.4Ghz clients and another running as 802.11n only on 5ghz.
You actually get more network bandwidth. It is backwards compatible too. So Airtunes and WDS are supported.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, hoping to start over with add-ins. When I reinstalled, I got all my old bookmarks and add-ins!

I checked plugins, found RealPlayer was outdated. I clicked 'UPDATE' which had me reinstall RealPlayer. When done, RealPlayer was still listed as outdated.
Thought I could uninstall-reinstall. Backed up bookmarks, uninstalled (checked to remove all customization). Reinstalled, and found all my bookmarks already installed! Couldn't find RealPlayer but it looked like all my old plugins were still there. What happened? Can I get a clean install?

Uninstalling Firefox won't remove your Bookmarks unless you tell it to remove your private data. You can try a Reset [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]].
Also, plugins are external to Firefox (flash, java, etc.) and so you can't remove them from Firefox. But you can disable, which is in practice the same thing.

Firefox keeps 'not responding.' I updated plug ins. HP smart web printing is listed under my extensions with an alert saying it's not compatible, but it will not give me the option to 'uninstall' or 'disable.' What else might be making firefox freeze?
