So we decided to get smartphones. I need a tutorial along the lines of smartphones for dummies. LOL -
I'm confused about text messaging. Apps - How do I put pictures into my phone. I don't want all those contacts in my phone - not sure how they got there.
Is there a tutorial somewhere that is really easy to follow and ASSUMES that the person behind the new phone knows nothing.
I have the Fascinate.

You need to study up on what Java is, how it works, syntax, etc. It seems you don't have the first clue how to write a valid Java class. This is fine, and of course that's where you have to start, but I think your time will be better spent reading the tutorials (links to which can be found on your left) than getting piecemeal help here on the forums. When you've gotten a handle on what classes, objects, variables, and methods are, and gotten some idea about syntax, come back with more specific problems and people will be more than willing to help you. Also, post to the New to Java Technology forum rather than this one.

Newbie to JSP/Struts: Where to get started

I would like to begin experimenting with JSP and the struts framework. I'm a java newbie but a relatively quick learner.
First, what products do I need to use struts/JSP ?
I have 9iAS standard edition release 1.0.2.1 and an oracle database std edition without the JVM installed. Do I need the JVM in the database ? Can JSP use a JVM outside the database ? Do I need enterprise edition ?
Do I need Jdevelopper 9i or can I learn to use JSP with simple tools (HTML editor) first ?
Does struts need JSP 2.0 spec or the JSP 1.1 that comes with iAS 1.0.2.1 is OK ? Is JSP 2.0 = JSP 1.2 (Like J2EE = JDK1.2 and up) There is a lot of version/naming confusion going on in java, you got any site that can help me untangle this mess ?

We actually use oracle 8.1.7 and 9iAS (PL/SQL gateway and http server). We would like to jump on the Java Bandwagon before we are left in the dust. We first need to be able to understand a lot of technology/concepts/buzzwords.
We started basic Java programming (Applications) but would prefer to get an idea of "The big picture".
By that, I mean, we need to be able to understand/design/architect sound applications and be able to talk to the community and understand what they are saying. Right now, reading the media or forums is just a big bunch of buzzwords that are ever changing and we cannot get a grasp on it.
We not only need to get aquainted with the concepts, but we also need to be able to determine wether product xyz fits in the architecture, etc...
If you were to get a couple of good books to answer some questions, where would you begin ?
Kind of questions we might have are:
- What is the difference between Jserv and Tomcat ?
- What excatly is tomcat ? A replacement for Jserv ?
- Can Jserv be used as a container for struts apps or do you need tomcat ? If you need tomcat, does it come with some version of 9ias ?
- What is a java web service ?
- I read a lot about Enterprise Java Beans etc.. What are they, what are there purpose ? It seems like it is a standard, what are they used for ? If it is a standard, does this mean that If I buy a set of EJB from a vendor, it would offer the same beans as another vendor ? Is Oracle BC4J an implementation of EJB with added functionality ? Is it proprietary ?
- Buzzwords everywhere: MVC, EJB, J2EE, BC4J etc.. What are the definitions.
- Is oracle's java vision proprietary or are they really following the rest of the world ? For example, is BC4J compatible with EJB ?
- What is a Framework
- What exactly is JSP.
- Can STRUTS be used to access an oracle database ? If so, what are the required components (I guess you need JDBC or SQLJ) but does the oracle database need to be java enabled ?
- Even if you use oracle 9ias as an application server, can you use non-proprietary development methods/architectures/techniques that could be easily implemented somewhere else using another vendor's application server (Ex: Apache + Tomcat, WebSphere, etc...)
- Struts seems to be an interesting thing. I see that it was developped to encourage code reuse and prevent everyone from reinventing the wheel. But I cannot understand what exactly a developper had to write before struts was there. I mean, there must be alternatives to strut, if so what is the purpose of the framework ?
A lot of questions, but we need to understand the basics before we jump on the java bandwagon. If we wait, we'll be left in the dust and we need to keep current.

Just saw your thread, and it looked like a candidate for the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA GeForce Roll Back the Driver issue. If your computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card, then the following applies to you. You do not want to update the driver. Rather you want to roll back the driver version, probably to about May 2013. For your convenience I have done a copy/paste of the forum announcement which gives all the details and fix of the matter.
Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing Premiere Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling back the video card driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow glitches specific to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies to you, then the “user to user” remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of the problems. The typical driver roll back has gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA nor Adobe has taken any corrective action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.

I'm a 100% Totally newbie - please bear over with me and forgive that I couldn't find the answer to my question in the arhive although I'm sure somebody else has asked exactly this question. And please don't say RTFM etc, because there are a huge amount of manuals etc for oracle and I'm 100% newbie and never worked with Oracle SQL before.

Question: I cannot figure out my password, perhaps I entered something during install but how do I get password for the "SYSTEM" user?

Welcome to the forum!
There's no way to find out what a password is.
You can log in as some other user who has DBA privileges (such as SYS), and change SYSTEM's password.
If you've forgotten the SYS password, too, then log into the server as the same user who installed Oracle, or as some user in the ora_dba group. You should be able to log in as SYS. When asked for a password, just press the enter key, like this:
C:> SQLPLUS /NOLOG
SQL> CONNECT SYS AS SYSDBA
Enter password: <enter>
Connected.
SQL> ALTER USER SYSTEM IDENTIFIED BY new_password;
User altered
SQL> CONNECT SYSTEM

As for the code in the first post... that was from a scrip i wrote
but the section i posted NetBeans wrote. here is the whole scrip...
All i really want to do is put pictures on labels...and i thought, why write
the same code for every button, ill just make a function out of the whole setIcon bit and call it for each label that needs a picture, passing the url of the picture off to the function... Below gets me one pic on one label, so

Webapplications need to go in their own subdirectory inside the webapps directory. Say you want a webapp 'test', then you would store your JSP as
TOMCAT_DIR\webapps\test\counter.jsp
Now you can open this JSP in your browser. Assuming Tomcat is running on the localhost and the default port 8080, the url would be:
http://localhost:8080/test/counter.jsp
If that doesn't work something is horribly misconfigured.

I made a temporoary website on wordpress with my pc -- now I want to see what is possible with this G5 and Pages '08 by bro gave me.

The current version is iLife '11. iWeb is up to v4 and I think has been out since 2007.
There is no iLife folder, the applications are loose within the Applications folder.
You can purchase a boxed version of iLife from Apple or an Apple reseller.
The Mac App store does not offer iWeb and you would need OSX 10.6.6 to use the App Store.
If you began your website using WordPress, why not continue to use it, it does not matter what system you are on, Windows, Mac or Linux, WordPress is web based.

Sure. First purchase the Snow Leopard DVD from Apple's Online Store. Upgrade your system to Snow Leopard then download the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 updater and install it. You can now open the App Store application, sign into the App Store with your Apple ID to purchase and download Lion. With Lion installed you can now use iCloud.

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
E. If updating:
Download and install update(s)
Use Software Update, or
Download standalone updater(s).
