A way to schedule applications launch/quit?

Ok,
First off let me say I'm an apple scripting noob. I've posted a similar thread in the OSX forum, and they said all the cool scripting guys hang out here. Hopefully someone here is willing to help.
I'm looking for a way schedule when an application launches; e.g. 10min after startup? Similarly, I'd like to schedule specific programs to automatically quit at a specific time, and re-open at another; e.g. quit at 9:00am, turn on at 12:00pm? To make things more complicated, some of the programs I wish to schedule create pop-ups asking "are you sure you want to quit" and/or "do you want to save before quiting"
I would like to avoid using ical for this task (since it will happen every day) so I downloaded Lingon. Everyone says how easy this program is to use, and I see that its indeed easy to schedule it to run a specific script at a specific time, however, I have no idea how to create the actual script.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
edit: If I remember correctly, there once was a program that would follow your actions and create a script based around what you did, which you could then execute via key command, etc. The user would simply hit a "record" button and then it would record your actions and create a the script. Does something like this exist?

Schedule the following scripts to run at the desired times:
tell app "application name"
run
end tell
and
tell app "application name"
quit
end tell
If you need to put a delay into the script itself, add a new line with the content:
delay 60
where the number is the time in seconds of the delay. Scripts are entered into the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder.

  • Application Launch/Quit Oddities

I'm having an odd, re-occurring problem with Mac OS X on my MacBook Pro. Every once in a while (maybe once every month), it'll get into this weird state in which no applications will launch (they just bounce for a while, then stop; but never actually finish launching) and no applications will quit (they hang when I try, and I have to force-quit them) and this continues until I restart.
It feels like some bizarre memory issue... but is it an OS X, or a problem with the memory itself? Or indicative of some other hardware issue? Is there anything I can or should do to track it down further?
    Thanks,
    _Nik

    Hi Nik;
After forcing an application to quit, I would suggest you use Console to view the logfile for that application and see if it has anything of interest.

  • Is there a way to stop the launching applications to come to foreground?

Is there a way to stop the launching applications to come to foreground?
Back with os 10.3 Panther or 10.4 Tiger the apps opened in the background. That was one of the good differences with Windows. I guess that 10.5 Leopard adopted this annoying Windows behavior. Hope it's gonna change with 10.7 Lion.
(Of course I am looking for another solution than the AppleScript/Terminal launch that can be found on Google. I'd rather have a plist option to change if it exists!)

I have found this page http://www.realsoftware.com/listarchives/realbasic-nug/2009-03/msg01167.html where it is proposed to add :
    <key>LSBackgroundOnly</key>
    <string>True</string>
    to MyApp.app/Contents/Info.plist
I tried this but the app launches totally hidden in the background. Plus you have to set this behavior for every app.
The open -g option works fine as expected.
Still looking for a system-wide option, but it doesn't seem to exist.
About the utility of such an option, I'll just remember you that some machine don't load apps very fast and, instead of waiting for an app to launch, the user will do something else until the app launches. You'll understand that waiting in front of a computer isn't acceptable and having a MBPro isn't possible for everyone.

  • Simplest way to test if application launch via CHAPI is supported?

I intend to write a test which tests if application launch via CHAPI is supported. What is the simplest way to write a test that sees if that feature is supported on a device?
Is there an indirect way of testing it like checking a system variable or is it necessary to actually launch an application?
    Edit: I guess the siomplest way is to see if Class.forName("javax.microedition.content.ContentHandler"); works.. Otherwise it probably throws an exception. Another method that might work would be to use System.getProperty("javax.microedition.content.version");

    Stephan,
The best way I can think of to solve this problem is to use the Windows API VIs for LabVIEW. They are available in the NI Developer Zone under the name "Windows API Function Utilities (32-bit) for LabVIEW". Specifically, there is a VI in the winevent.llb called "Get Task List" that returns the names of all the tasks currently running in the toolbar. You can just search each window name in a for loop for "Microsoft Excel" and if you find it, you'll know that Excel is running.
I hope this suggestion gets you started in the right direction. Good luck.

  • File copy in finder prevents application launches

Here's another question for people to ignore:
Despite MacOS X's alleged pre-emptive multitasking copying files in the Finder prevents new applications from launching. Case in point, I was copying about 5gb of data from my internal hard drive just now to an external drive. I decided to check my email after the copy started, but discovered I had closed Firefox. So I tried launching it. I say tried, because it just bounced in the dock for about three minutes and then sat there like a dead fish, not giving me anything but the beach ball. I force-quit Firefox and tried launching again after the copy was done. One bounce and I had a window and my home page loaded. Applications launched BEFORE the start of a copy job respond normally. I just can't launch new apps. I've used pretty much every version of MacOS X since 10.2, and this has been the way it is in every version. This leads me to assume one of two things to be true:
    1. I'm the only person who's ever had this problem and that's why nothing's ever been done to fix it. Knowing my deleterious effect on any piece of technology I own, I wouldn't be surprised. I can never have nice things.
    2. Apple is aware that this is an issue but has decided it's less important to fix this because it is so infrequent (and let's face it, hardly fatal) than to spend their time gussying up the OS with useless eye candy so people don't notice the warts.
So my question: How the heck do I fix this? Or do I have to simply put up with it?

I am guessing that the file(s) you were copying were large, which would mean a longer delay between completed copies. The OS is multi-tasking, but various components (such as the Finder) are not multi-threaded. You can see some of the same results with launching large applications, connecting to non-existing servers or opening some web pages. It depends on the application - I hear Leopard has more multi-threaded components.

  • Mail problem on Leopard: "the application Mail quit unexpectedly" -- why?

When I click the Mail icon in the Dock, the program fails to launch. Instead I get this message: "the application Mail quit unexpectedly"
This is on a MacBook (2 GHz Intel Core Duo w/ 512 MB ram) upgraded to OSX 10.5.1.
If it matters, this is the first time I've tried to use Mail. (what I mean is, I've never previously used Mail, either before or after the Leopard upgrade on this MacBook.)
Any suggestions/wisdom welcome to fix this problem!
    Many thanks, jp

Quit Safari then open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:   /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Click Go then move the silverlight.plugin from the Internet Plug-Ins folder to the Trash.
Try Safari. See if that made a difference.
The coreclr plug in is in some way related to Silverlight.

  • Launch/Quit CoverSutra on iTunes Launch/Quit

CoverSutra doesn't come with a iTunes launch/quit monitor daemon to start/quit itself when you lauch/quit iTunes. I wonder if it's possible to run an AppleScript automatically when iTunes runs to start/quit CoverSutra. I want something like the code bellow to run automatically.
    on run
    repeat
if application "iTunes" is running and application "CoverSutra" is not running then
    tell application "CoverSutra" to activate
    end if
if application "iTunes" is not running and application "CoverSutra" is running then
    tell application "CoverSutra" to quit
    end if
delay 5 --infinite loop 100% CPU
    end repeat
    end run

There is no file at that URL, only an error message.
    Is this your podcast -
    https://itunes.apple.com/podcast/soap-box-heroessoap-box-heroes/id682605938
This is using the feed at
    http://feeds.feedburner.com/SoapBoxHeroessoapBoxHeroesPodcast
which has four episodes; however there are no 'enclosure' tags containing the URLs of playable media, so as iTunes does not show episodes with no playable media the podcast shows as empty.
I could only guess that that is your podcast from the title given in the error message for the URL you quote as you haven't given any further information.
If it is, then the Feedburner feed must be working from a feed you've created, though there's no way of knowing its URL. You can move Feedburner to using a different feed easily enough, or get the feed it's using working properly, and then the podcast will be subscribable again and the Store will catch up after a few days.

  • "the application iDVD quit unnexpectedly"

    Hi there -
I haven't burned an iMovie in about 6 months, and tried last night. I've tried launching it from inside iMovie 5 and by opening it on its own. Both ways I get the error message "the application iDVD quit unnexpectedly". Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?

This is probably going to sound dumb... I'm not that techy a user How do I get to these files? I went through the library folder on my harddrive, and although I have some plist files, I don't have one for iDVD....

  • How to call request object of IPortalComponent in KM Scheduler application

    Hi
We are reading RFC Table data using JCO Connection Pool(JCOClientPoolEntry. Please find the below teo line code.If we put this code in KM Scheduler application then its throwing error for the request objecct of IPortalComponenetRequest.
    IJCOClientPoolEntry jcoPoolEntry = null;
    jcoPoolEntry = clientService.getJCOClientPoolEntry(sysId, request);
Can you please let me know how to use request object of IPortalComponent in KM Scheduler application?
    Thanks,
    Susmita

    Hello GopalY,
In my experience its not possible to call OLE object in Webui. Maybe customer 3 party application will be supply some web service to handle credit card payments. I think this is the simple way to access 3party application.

  • "The application iChat quit unexpectedly"; "Library not loaded"?

Whenever I try to launch iChat, I receive "the application iChat quit unexpectedly" error.
Neither "Relaunch" nor "Reset and Relaunch" fix the issue, and when I click "Report" and view the "Report Details" it gives the output enclosed below.
The gist of the error is "Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ScreenSharing.framework/Versions/A/ScreenShar ing".
It also says "Reason: no suitable image found", but it also says it:
    "Did find:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ScreenSharing.framework/Versions/A/ScreenShari ng: unknown file type, first eight bytes: 0x6E 0x61 0x6D 0x65 0x20 0x20 0x48 0x42"
I've removed and reinstalled iChat (when in Safe Boot -- with the Shift key) from Disk 1 of the Mac OS X Install disk 1 by using the "Optional Installs.mpkg" installer and selecting only iChat, but I still receive the same error.
How can I reinstall this "ScreenSharing" library? Would that likely fix the issue?
PS - I just realized that if I go to "System Preferences" and click "Sharing", the options are totally blank! I can't see any options or change any Sharing configuration! All my other System Preferences show up correctly.
So now the question becomes, how do I install just the "Sharing" System Preference?
Or should I try to reset permissions on the Sharing System Preference somehow?
    Thanks!!

Note that the first eight bytes of a Universal-Binary Mach-O image should be 0xCAFEBABE, 0x00000002. Since the existing file was so vastly different, after all else is said and done, you may want to make sure your hard drive checks out okay in Disk Utility.

  • Easy way to schedule a job to run for a set period?

Is there an easy way to schedule (dbms_scheduler) a job to run for a set period -say, half an hour- and then to stop.
Currently, I schedule a procedure to do the work (a bunch of inserts or updates, say) and the first line of that procedure assigns sysdate to a variable when it starts. Then as the procedure loops through its work, I compare the current sysdate with that original one, and if the new sysdate>original one by more than 30 minutes, I raise an application error. But it's messy, and I was wondering if there was a nicer way of doing it?

"Admin" -I think you'll find that 'end_time' merely states a time after which the job will not be run. It doesn't do anything to kill off a job which is already running at the time that comes round. Similarly, repeat_interval merely states how often the job should be run, not a time interval within which it must run and outside of which it must stop being run.
Satish: your suggestion looks great. Do you have, or know of, any examples where that is used, though? The doco you pointed to says the parameter raises an event, but that it's up to my event handler to deal with it. I wouldn't have the first idea of how to deal with this in code myself. If I could see a simple example, it would help a lot! Unfortunately, that page doesn't contain such an example!

  • Can't get remote cluster machine to encode video - getting 'Media Server application unexpectedly quit'

    Hi
Using Compressor 4 / Apple QuarterMaster admin etc, I have set up a Cluster and it works well to Share > Export Using Compressor Settings.  That took some doing, and I'm happy that it works.
If I do all my processing in the foreground, or alternatively in the background on my FCPX computer, ie without running or using any cluster in the background, it all goes well.  Quick, error free.
If I activate the cluster and only put my local machine's compressor services into it, and then send my compressor batch to the cluster, it works perfectly well.  But that defeats the point of having a cluster.  I want the remote machine to do all the work so my local machine doesn't slow down.
Unfortunately, if I add the remote machine's services into the cluster, the encoding always fails with 'Media Server application unexpectedly quit' in the error log.  I know that the cluster is distributing segments of the file to the remote machine - this can be seen in the Share Monitor, but they never get processed and sit there waiting until I get the error message.
The remote machine is a modern 4G core 2 duo MacBook. It's never been used for this before.  It has Compressor 4 and the Pro Apps Update installed and both appear to work.  Both machines are running 10.6.8.  The remote machine has Compressor services initialised in Apple QMaster sharing.  The QMasterAdmin sees these services.  They are accessible over Bonjour and appear in the Cluster.  Compressor services from both the local and the remote machine are configured exactly the same way.  The same QT codecs exist on both machines.  I've restarted, shift-restarted, etc etc.
So I am at a loss here.  The remote machine just won't compress anything it is sent.
Any ideas?  Must both have FCPX installed?
Anyone actually got a remote machine in a cluster to work with Compressor 4?  I can't figure it out.
    Chris.

    OK... finally sorted it out.
It's a bug, as far as I can tell.
Any job entered directly into Compressor 4 in the normal Compressor manner will be successfully rendered by any working cluster from any machine that can access the cluster.  That's good.  It means that the underlying distributed processing model works well.
HOWEVER - any job forwarded to a Compressor 4 cluster that includes non-local compressor services (ie compressor services not resident on the same machine), using Share > Export Using Compressor Settings direct from FCPX will fail.
To confirm this bug, I made a cluster on a remote machine.  It was a dual core machine, so I enabled 2 compressor services on that machine, and that's all the cluster was.  Simple.
I then manually entered a video file (ProRess 422 720p) into Compressor on the remote machine.  I did this by physically setting up new job using the compressor user interface.  A bog standard ProRes422 720p file rendered fine this way on the remote machine.  As did anything else I gave it.  Good.
Then on my main machine, I opened Compressor and made a job based on the same file and settings, and sent it to the remote machine's cluster.  No problem at all!  Great!
So now I know that both Compressor versions, and the clustering model, are working fine.  In fact I can send all sorts of files to the cluster, from any other version of compressor, and have them processed on the remote machine, and get the result back on my desktop later on.  Excellent.
But, if I try put this same file into a FMPX timeline, and go Share > Export Using Compressor Settings.... and select a cluster with remote (non-local) compressor services, it does not work.  Rendering the video segments on the remote machine times out and fails, every time.  It doesn't matter what file format I use, it just fails.
    So it's a bug.
From what I can tell, Final Cut Pro X somehow messes up the Share > Export Using Compressor settings where the cluster includes non-local compressor services, causing all jobs to fail.  The same Share > Export Using Compressor Settings will work quite happily if all the services on the cluster are on the same machine as FCPX, or if the job is sent to This Computer in the background.  But any attempt to send files to a cluster using any remote services will fail.
I hope this saves some people from wasting as much time as I have!
One workaround is to export to ProRes then put this file manually into Compressor, sending the job to the remote cluster.  This is a two step process with a large intermediary ProRes file.  If one goes Export as QuickTime movie, generating the intermediary file prevents further FCPX work being done.
To get the intermediary in the background one could use  Share > Export Using Compressor Settings via either This Computer, or to a cluster using only local services.  Then once complete, manually add it to a compressor job.
So this is a FCPX bug as far as I can tell.
    Chris.

  • Is there a way to hide the launcher in Win95?

    Hello forte-users,
i am wondering if there is a solution to hide the launcher in the
task-line of Win95 without additional tools.
I need a way to start the launcher as system-service or in a manner
that the process is not shown in the Win95 task-line after startup
the computer. Because if more MS-DOS-tasks are open some users clean
the task line using close with the right mouse-button to close those
tasks without looking which kind of process it is. And sometimes they
close the launcher also during run of a forte-application which makes
it impossible to continue some work in this application :-).
    Every little help is welcome
