Hi,
SAP is an ERP system in which we integrate all the data of an organisation.
This data we integrating is from different areas or modules.
ABAP is a fourth generation Programming language on which SAP has implemented
all its software.
The role of an ABAPer is to develop or support all the application that r needed to
implement a business object or an application object.
ABAPer is a application programmer who retrives the data from the database and show it to the end-user with the help of report..out of thre layers of sap the abaper position is on Application Layer in which Sap programs are develop and then transported to the Production server...
Workbench... The ABAP Workbench contains several tools that allow you to edit specific repository objects. like ABAP Editor , Menu PAinter etc....

Not only in SD but in all modules, ABABers assistance is very much required. In SD, though SAP has provided various standard sales process, in many companies, their process would be entirely different and we had to address those issues through some zee tcode. So to address those process, we may need ABABers help who can write coding in User Exits or make use of some Function Modules.
From reports point of view, you can take it for granted, no clients is satisfied using standard reports. They will provide a different format based on which we need to develop such reports from the datas being stored in multiple tables. So for this, ABABers help is very much required.
The explanation what is given here is only a brief and this can be explained in multiple pages also.

Actually to understand the relation you need to know what is sap modules and what is abap??
ERP package is a collection of various integrated application areas known as modules like SD(Sales), MM (Material Management) etc/.
Now SAP gave these modules in a generic form to all of its customer. One need to customized this generic form of SAP according to their business requirements. Now, as these generic form of modules written in ABAP language, so the customizing are done using abap language only through various reports(R), interface(I), conversion (C), Enhancements (E), Forms (F) which is known as RICEF work.
So one abapers role will be customizing a new sap instance ( Implementation) or modifying already existing sap instance (Upgrade, production supprot) or migration from lower version to higher version ( as for example sap 4.6 to ECC 6.0) .
Reports(R) contains: Classical report, alv report.
Interface ( i) cvontains : Idoc, ABAP Proxy, RFC.
Conversion ( C) contains : BDC, BAPI, LSMW, CAT Scripts
Enhancements(E) contains: User exits, customer exits, BADI, Enhancements points and sports, Carnel BADI.
Forms(F) Contains: Sap scripts, Smartforms, Adobe Forms etc.

Hi Ramakrishnan,
ABAPers role could be anything like fixing the bugs in existing interfaces/transactions, creating new programs,modifying existing programs or SAPScripts or Interfaces.....etc,debugging,break fixes,involve in work shops/meetings along with Functional Consultant to understand/gather the requirements etc.
Besides good ABAP technical and programming skills,It would be an added advantage if you know the following in FI/CO:
1. Concepts in FI/CO module regarding Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Asset Management, Tax, General Ledger/Accounts,Cost/Profit Centers,Cost Elements etc.
2. Few important transactions and flow of data
3. Important tables like BSEG,BSAD,BSID,BSAK,BSIK,LFA1,LFB1,LFM1,PAYR etc and the relation between the tables and important fields.
4. Important Bank interface programs which exchange data between Banks and the Company
5. Integration with other modules like SD, MM etc.

An ABAPers role in this case could be incase any enhancements are needed, this is if all the settings for the ALE are going to be handled by an ALE consultant.
In this case if some consumization needs to be done like enhancing the existing IDOC for creating a sales order, then an ABAPer would come into picture.

ABAPer role in APO DP is the same as the normal abapers role..
In APO DP data storage is in livecache hence you will require to extract it from Badi or BAPI..
Here data is not stored in the table
usging GUID you requires to extract the data ..

Hi Bysani,
As ABAP guy in SAP-PLM project you be working mostly on Enhancements, Field exist, user Exists and Reports.
There is nothing worry about SAP-PLM, the work you may get is based on customer requirement & scenarios but you will receive the Detail Funcitonal Specification from the PLM Functional Consultant.
As i mentioned the ABAP work is mostly on Field Exists to make some fields mandatories, User Exists, Functional Modules, Enhancements & Reports.

In Project Implementation when the Design Phase will start then the developers come into Picture.
When Function Specification or Blue Print is ready then you require developers and also Technical Lead to be in conference calls or in picture with the client to know the requirement .
Based on that Design Document is prepared beased on developers start the development .

Automating creation of HR master record for a user when a time entry role

Hi Abapers,
We need an automated solution for the creation of the infotype 105 based on the addition of the time personal data maintainer role into an SAP user Account Master Record(PA30).
Is it asking to add authorisation objects which would allow the user the time data, may be it is talking about 105 as user data is maintained in 105.
For this requirement what I am going to do.Plz help me for this and how we can give authorization setting for a particular user plz send me some document.

HI,
Can some tell me what is role of a business analyst in SAP?.
I know BA is gathers requirement from Client and gives it to the technical team.
I am little confused to what it exactly is the work . A SAP consultant also configures according the client, so isn't his role same as the business analyst.

What are the differences between a functional and business consultant?
The difference between Functional consultant and Business consultant are as follows:
1) A funcitonal consultant is able to configure the system unlike business consultant.
2) Functional consultant know more about business process unlike Business consultant.
3) A business consultant will bring business process knowledge and provide it to functional consultant who in turn used this knowledge to configure the system.
4) Functional consultant has more configuration knolwledge then Business consultant.
The responsibilities of a support consultant are:
- Primarily responsible for Handling tickets and application support to the endusers
- When an issue comes diagnose, analyse and solve the issue
- Responsible for any enhancements
- Writing functional specs and interacting with Abapers to develop any user exits
- Training the end users and preparing end user training material
For those who wished to know the role of a functional consultant. Below is one view:
A functional consultant evaluates the demands in talking with the customer's representatives, transforms the essence into an abstract and algorithmic business model. Hence, he identifies the use cases and transforms them into logical and technical views.
Then the main task starts: customizing the respective business area and making sure the system reacts in the manner according to the constraints of the requested use case.
The consultant documents the settings and prepares proper guidelines that allow other consultants to do further changes or repairs with due efforts.
The consultant takes care that proper training is given to the users and that the system is usable, performing appropriately and the business flow is complete and correct.
During go live he assists the technical staff by testing the behaviour of the system.
After go live he guarantees that the procedures remain usable and consistent in real live situation and proposes enhancements.
The main duty of a consultant is to transfer external know-how to the client. It is not manpower that counts but intelligence, understanding of processes, a feeling for defects and general a common sense.
Role of a Functional Consultant in an End To End Implementation
When you talk about the role of a Functional consultant in an end to end implementation, I think it won't be possible for me or anybody to define everything but I will try to summarize it:
1. Functional consultant is expected to generate knowledge about the current business process, design current business flows, study current business processes and its complication, in all we can say getting through with current business setup. Flow diagrams and DFD are prepared, most of the time in Vision format, all this forms the part of AS IS document.
2. Everything configured has to be documented as per their categories in the form of predefined templates, these have to be then approved by the team leads or who ever the consultant is reporting to.
3. Mapping and GAP analysis is done for each module, I have seen people defining integration after mapping, gap analysis and configuration is done, but as per my experience in implementation, it is a simultaneous process.
4. Before starting configuring future business processes in SAP, the DFD/ERD are prepared, this documentation is called TO BE, which can be also siad as the result of mapping and gap analysis.
5. Sometimes Functional consultants are also expected to prepare test scripts for testing the configured scenarios.
6. End user manual and user training is also expected from F.Consultants.
The project normally starts off with a Kick off meeting in which the team size, team members, reporting system, responsibilities, duties, methodlogy, dates and schedules, working hours which have been predicided are formally defined.
ASAP, it won't be possible for me to explain it here, but all I can tell you about it is that it is SAP standard implementation methodology, which SAP prescribes but is not mandatory for any company to follow, such as IBM follow some blue Methodlogy, some companies follow typical SDLC steps, ASAP stands for Accerlated SAP, you can find all the steps on SAP site, through google, reading it from there won't give you a great knowledge about ASAP but will obviously get you to know the definitions of various term.

Hello Rakhi,
ABAPer`s role is important in any module, its vital in case of MM this is because MM as a module involves maximum interfaces with other modules like fI-CO, SD, WM , QM. The business processes in MM are customized most of the times hence lots of changes needs to be done at various point of time, some new programs to be written.
In implementation, an ABAPer would be configuring the specifications given by functional consultant. Like creating RFCs, BDCs.
For transporting customizations to production from development many at times it needs abaper help (if sox compliance is there)
In testing, bugs, runtime errors etc are the hurdles these need to be fixed with ABAPers help.

Some of the planning functions require script writing or coding. ABAper is helpful in creating such codes.
In our scenario, ABAPers created the conversion/ transformation as per mapping prepared by the Functional Consultant.
The functional / business users do upload and download of data (imports and exports) wherever required.
