Role of a Business Analyst in SAP

HI,
Can some tell me what is role of a business analyst in SAP?.
I know BA is gathers requirement from Client and gives it to the technical team.
I am little confused to what it exactly is the work . A SAP consultant also configures according the client, so isn't his role same as the business analyst.
If some could send me a few documents for me understand, will really be appreciated
Thanks

Dear Abhishek,
Role of a mySAP Functional Consultant
What are the differences between a functional and business consultant?
The difference between Functional consultant and Business consultant are as follows:
1) A funcitonal consultant is able to configure the system unlike business consultant.
2) Functional consultant know more about business process unlike Business consultant.
3) A business consultant will bring business process knowledge and provide it to functional consultant who in turn used this knowledge to configure the system.
4) Functional consultant has more configuration knolwledge then Business consultant.
The responsibilities of a support consultant are:
- Primarily responsible for Handling tickets and application support to the endusers
- When an issue comes diagnose, analyse and solve the issue
- Responsible for any enhancements
- Writing functional specs and interacting with Abapers to develop any user exits
- Training the end users and preparing end user training material
For those who wished to know the role of a functional consultant.  Below is one view:
A functional consultant evaluates the demands in talking with the customer's representatives, transforms the essence into an abstract and algorithmic business model. Hence, he identifies the use cases and transforms them into logical and technical views.
Then the main task starts: customizing the respective business area and making sure the system reacts in the manner according to the constraints of the requested use case.
The consultant documents the settings and prepares proper guidelines that allow other consultants to do further changes or repairs with due efforts.
The consultant takes care that proper training is given to the users and that the system is usable, performing appropriately and the business flow is complete and correct.
During go live he assists the technical staff by testing the behaviour of the system.
After go live he guarantees that the procedures remain usable and consistent in real live situation and proposes enhancements.
The main duty of a consultant is to transfer external know-how to the client. It is not manpower that counts but intelligence, understanding of processes, a feeling for defects and general a common sense.
Role of a Functional Consultant in an End To End Implementation
When you talk about the role of a Functional consultant in an end to end implementation, I think it won't be possible for me or anybody to define everything but I will try to summarize it:
1. Functional consultant is expected to generate knowledge about the current business process, design current business flows, study current business processes and its complication, in all we can say getting through with current business setup. Flow diagrams and DFD are prepared, most of the time in Vision format, all this forms the part of AS IS document.
2. Everything configured has to be documented as per their categories in the form of predefined templates, these have to be then approved by the team leads or who ever the consultant is reporting to.
3. Mapping and GAP analysis is done for each module, I have seen people defining integration after mapping, gap analysis and configuration is done, but as per my experience in implementation, it is a simultaneous process.
4. Before starting configuring  future business processes in SAP, the DFD/ERD are prepared, this documentation is called TO BE, which can be also siad as the result of mapping and gap analysis.
5. Sometimes Functional consultants are also expected to prepare test scripts for testing the configured scenarios.
6. End user manual and user training is also expected from F.Consultants.
The project normally starts off  with a Kick off meeting in which the team size, team members, reporting system, responsibilities, duties, methodlogy, dates and schedules, working hours which have been predicided are formally defined.
ASAP, it won't be possible for me to explain it here, but all I can tell you about it is that it is SAP standard implementation methodology, which SAP prescribes but is not mandatory for any company to follow, such as IBM follow some blue Methodlogy, some companies follow typical SDLC steps, ASAP stands for Accerlated SAP, you can find all the steps on SAP site, through google, reading it from there won't give you a great knowledge about ASAP but will obviously get you to know the definitions of various term.
Hope this helps you. Please let me know in case of any queries.
Regards,
Rakesh

  • Difference in roles of functional consultant & Business Analyst

    Hi All
What are the differences in the roles of business analysts & functional consultants in SAP? At which levels of organization hierarchy they fall?
    Regards
    Abhijeet

    Hello Abhijeet,
To add on the comments Marilyn already posted, my experience at customer projects is that SAP Functional Consultants are more focussed on one subject matter/business domain like HR, CRM, Finance, SCM, SRM, etc. which are related to the functional modules SAP delivers. The business side of IT products as you can say. Good functional consultants know the details of that specific subject matter and are able to translate these to functional requirements for the implementation of the SAP module.
A Business Analist is a more generic role. Mostly found in the CIO office or at the Information Management part of a business division/unit. He/she translates more high-level business goals into concrete improvement programs and designs.
To make a very bold distinction: Business Analists more like are employees of the company trying to improve its business, where SAP Functional Consultants are hired from consulting firms to do their specific trick. Off course this not always is true, because roles are defined differently from company to company as Marilyn already stated.
I welcome anyone who likes to add comments on this view.
    Regards, Edo

  • Difference between Business Analyst SAP SD and SAP SD consultant

    Hi friends
I need openion about what is difference between Business Analyst SAP SD and SAP SD consultant.
    Raj

Both the roles are more likely the same, In consulting companies like IBM, Deloitte , TCS and others SAP functional anlayst is a more popular term but if you work directly with a SAP client - SAP Business Analyst is what they refer to a functional anlayst. Most of the responsibilities are same but they are some roles which require more of ANALYST person who can gather requirements, GAP Analysis, IS - TO BE and etc and less of configuration or customization in SAP therefore they sometimes call it SAP Business Analyst but in both cases the configuration knowledge and experience about specific modules is required.
    Thanks

  • What is a Business Process Expert? and Business Analyst?

In response to Sinem Dorter's very interesting and informative blog about Composite Analytics at Whirpool, I'd like to ask how people would really define what is going on there.
Are modelers of composite applications business analysts? Business process experts? Application specialists? All of the above? None of the above?
What unique skills are required to distinguish, say, a business analyst from a business process expert?
And can a business process expert be a team of people: maybe an enterprise analyst, a business process expert and an IT application specialist?
    I'm curious to read responses.
    Judy

    Hi Judy,
I agree with you. Sinems blog from Whirlpool is really interesting and well written.
Thanks a lot that you have the courage to open the first discussion in relation to her blog.
Now to your question what's the difference between a Business Process  Expert and a Business Analyst.
    <u>Definition of a Business Analyst</u>
Please find below a small  section of the Roles and Responsibility Matrix of SAP xApp Analytics . You will find it also in our OKP (Online Knowledge Product) of Analytics in Service Marketplace, alias rkt-analytics.
    - Responsible for assessing the business requirements
    - Communicate with the business users for project
      requirements
    - Act as the critical link between end users’ business
requirements and data architecture solution together
      with the Application Developer
    - Possess and provide deep knowledge of current business
scenarios such as: SAP BW Business Explorer Queries
      and SAP CRM, SRM, MIC
    - Design and develop a data access solution
    - Understand SAP Analytics models and become an expert
      on Analytics
    - Conduct Analytics workshops
    - Create and provide business requirements documentation
    - Provide content “know-how” and knowledge transfer
      documentation
    <u>Definition of a Business Process Expert</u>
Business process experts have the business knowledge and IT sway to make business process innovation happen in real time by adapting, composing, and executing end-to-end business processes using composition software tools and enterprise services.
SAP enables the business process expert to drive real-time business process innovation by providing a rich combination of industry business process and services content, and composition software tools from a proven business process platform.

Now I am interested to hear what others say!
Also I am sure there are much more questions/comments regarding Sinems blog.
Or do you have also experiences which you want to share with the BPX-Community?
Don't hesitate to use the forum for this!

    Responsibilities of an implementation project...
For ex, Lets say If its a fresh implementation of BI or for that matter you are implementing SAP...
First and foremost will be your requirements gathering from the client. Depending upon the requirements you will creat a business blueprint of the project which is the entire process from the start to the end of an implementation...
After the blue print phase sign off we start off with the realization phase where the actual development happens... In our example after installing the necessary softwares, patches for BI we need to discuss with the end users who are going to use the system for inputs like how they want a report to look like and what are the Key Performance Indicators(KPI) for the reports etc., basically its a question and answer session with the business users... After collecting those informations the development happens in the development servers...
After the development comes to an end the same objects are tested in quality servers for any bugs, errors etc., When all the tests are done we move all the objects to the production environment and test it again whether everything works fine...
The Go-Live of the project happens where the actually postings happen from the users and reports are generated based on those inputs which will be available as an analytical report for the management to take decisions...
The responsibilites vary depending on the requirement... Initially the business analyst will interact with the end users/managers etc., then on the requirements the software consultants do the development, testers do the testing and finally the go-live happens...

    Dear,
Its good decision to go with Business Analytics in SAP ERP.
Both businesses and SAP AG no more requires consultants, requires efficient dynamic skilled business analytics professionals to advance in current international market. Business Strategic planning plays a major role in Business Analytics.
If you search google with "Business analytics" you will find hundreds of results which everyone of us has to read and learn what really stands for Strategy and Planning.

P.S: "no more requires consultants" my intention is already plenty of consultants in market today. When competition is tough and plenty - invent new technologies and upgrade.

    Understanding message flow in XI
    /people/siva.maranani/blog/2005/05/25/understanding-message-flow-in-xi
what are the different technical systems are there in the landscape.
The technical system describes the physical view and the business system the logical view, respectively.
So in most cases you must define both but while a technical system can only link to one WEB AS, more than one business systems can link to the same technical system.
Tech System - Holds the tech details like installation no, db instance.
Technical Systems are of following types:
Technical systems are application systems that are installed in your system landscape. An example of an application system is a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) server. In the SLD, there are five types of technical systems:
    1.)WEBas java,
    2.)Standalone JAVA
    3.)Third party
    4.)Web as ABAP
    1) Web AS Java
Web AS Java systems consist of one or more instances and each instance is installed on a separate host. An instance itself consists of cluster nodes that can communicate with each other.
    2.)Standalone Java
Standalone Java technical systems are standalone Java applications that are installed in a computer system from an administration perspective. They can also be installed as an operating system service or as a daemon
Web AS java belongs to the NetWeaver Comes with both ABAP and Java, Standalone instread comes separate from the netWeaver.
    3) Third party technical sytem
It can be any of the technical sytem. let us say if you want to send a file to R/3, here the file reside in your local system. for that you can define your local system as a third party technical system.
All those machines that comes under non sap, belongs to the third party.
4.) Web AS ABAP technical systems, ranging from any SAP system to an APO server or CRM server, are based on the same Basis Component (BC), which includes the ABAP interpreter, ABAP Dictionary, ABAP Workbench, and so on. A dedicated database, which stores most of the data of the BC and the application components, is associated with the system.
    Also refer : http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/24/8fa93e08503614e10000000a114084/content.htm
What is your file size and how many records are there in your file ? which idoc your using ?
The file size that your server can process depends on various different aspects like the server hardware sizing, total available memory form both Java and ABAP side, the kind of interfacing you are trying to achieve, if your interface needs a complex mapping etc. Although there is no correct picture on theoritical Max file size, it will depend on the specifics of your landscape.
I personally feel that, processing a 2 GB file is not a good idea as the message when converted to XML its size multiplies atleast 3.5 times to 7 times, which gets persisted at various stages of logging that the system does. You may want to consider other options like splitting the messages into smaller chunks, having no or minimal mapping and configuring the recordset per message property.
Personally in one of the implementations we have had to process a Max file size of 350MB which gets processed once a month and that too during non-peak working hours.

Selecting an IDOC depends on your requirement.
example: if it is purchase order then the idoc would be orders.orders05
if it is invoice, idoc would be invoic.invoic02.
    Reward points if this helps

  • Business Metadata in SAP BW

    Hi Folks,
I am karthik ramanathan doing my project in SAP BW and my topic is
'Extraction of Business Metadata from SAP BW'.
I am new to this field and I would like to know what are the Business
Metadata needed & useful for the SAP customers. And know more about different
business metadata available for SAP Customers from SAP BW.
In other words what are the possible business metadata needed for SAP
Customers for the following BW objects - ODS, Reports,Querys, InfoObjects,
InfoCube, Infoset, Update Rules Routines, InfoPackages, PSA, Source Systems,
    etc..
Thanx in Advance. All your suggesstions and answers are welcomed.
    Warm Rgds
    karthik.

    Hi Karthik,
first of all welcome on board and good luck for this new experience as developer in SAP BW.
Are you talking about metadata concept or business content, so, you need to know which type of functional areas are covered by BW std objects ?
Business Content is a pre-configured set of role and task-relevant information models based on consistent metadata in the SAP BW.
Business Content provides selected roles within a company with the information they need to carry out their tasks.
This information model includes integral roles, workbooks, queries, InfoSources, InfoCubes, ODS objects, key figures, characteristics, update rules, and extractors for SAP R/3, mySAP.com Business Applications, and for other selection applications.
Business Content can be used in particular industries without being modified, it can be modified, meaning you can work with it to any degree of detail and serve as a template or an example for customer-defined Business Content.
If you need more details about metadata definition, take a look to http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/80/1a6197e07211d2acb80000e829fbfe/content.htm
However, always refer to help.sap.com->Documentation-> SAP NetWeaver->choose your release....
Hope it helps (and don't forget to assign some point by clickin on the yellow star!.....for details see /people/mark.finnern/blog/2004/08/10/spread-the-love ...)

  • What is the role of ABAP technical analyst?

    Dear Friends,
I would like to know the roles and responsibilities of a ABAP technical analyst for MM ,SD,FI/Co modules.?
Please tell me in detail what are the other roles or positions are there in an implementation or support project.
Very curious to know about the implementation cycle in SAP projects.
like I have heard of aggies,GAP analysis ,Blue print study....But dont have clear picture.
So relying on Sdn experts completely....
    Thanks,
    Reshali.

I disagree.  I think the coffee corner is the best place for this kind of general question.  So I've moved it here. Sure, you'll get some sarcastic or teasing answers, but you'll also get some helpful answers.
However, a general question can only be answered generally.  And I'm not sure how helpful that is.  The role of ABAP technical analyst varies from site to site.
For example, at one site, I had to:
Take functional spec and write technical spec and unit test scripts.  If there were questions not addressed in the functional spec, I put it back to the functional analyst.  Once I'd completed the technical spec and unit test scripts, they were reviewed.  Once reviewed and found acceptable, I could code.  I would then run the test scripts, and record the results.  Again my work would be reviewed - the tech spec, the unit test scripts, the results, and the ABAP code.  Once accepted, the development would go into testing.  At any point in the cycle we could go back to an earlier point, get a review, carry on, make changes, get a review...
    So, my responsiblities there were:
    1. Write technical specs from functional spec.
    2. Write unit test scripts
    3. Develop programs
    4. Unit test the programs according to the scripts and record results
    5. Review other programmers technical specs and ensure they match the functional spec.
    6. Review other programmers test scripts and ensure that they are thorough enough
    7. Review other programmers testing and ensure it has been done properly
    8. Review other programmers code, ensure it matches the technical spec and conforms to standards of quality.
( This might sound like overkill, but this site was the ONLY site I've ever worked where the vast majority of programs worked correctly in production - the rigourous checks upfront saved that company a fortune in maintenance. ).
    At another site:
Given a functional spec, write a program and a technical spec.
btw - when you asked the question in the XI forum, Ramakrishna's answer was copy and paste from SAP Help.
