About .desktop files (using xfce4)

I don't really understand how .desktop files work.
There are some in /usr/share/applications in /opt/kde/share/application /opt/gnome/...
Now I want some programs to be displayed in the xfce menu. Many are already registered but not eclipse.
I have found a eclipse.desktop file in /opt/kde/share/apps/kappfinder/apps/Development but I don't know how to use it.
Is there a .desktop management program ? Or is it because there must be an eclipse .desktop file in /opt/kde/share/applications ?
Does eclipse really depend of kde ?

Just copy the .desktop file you found to somewhere in /usr/share/applications, /opt/gnome/share/applications or /opt/kde/share/applications.
Eclipse doesn't really depend on gnome or KDE I think, it's just the native interface libraries that do. Since you're not forced to use these JNI libraries, eclipse should not depend on them, but have them listed as makedepend.

  • Question about openning files using SDK 10.

I have written a Plug-In for SDK 9 that works wonderfully. One of the functions is for the user to be able to page (Next/Previous) between PDF files on our server. This functionality now longer works without crashing Acrobat 10. All I am doing is creating the URL path to the next/previous PDF, creating a CustomFileSys with the path and calling AVDocOpenFromFile.
Does this no longer work with Acrobat 10 SDK?
    Thanks!

    Should work fine, AFAIK.
For this level of issue, I would open a formal support request with developer support.

  • Question about HTML files using TextEdit

First off, I wanted to ask if this is the proper place to post a question about HTML/XHTML. I couldn't really find anywhere else that seemed to fit better, but please point me in the right direction if this is not the place. Thanks.
Moving on -- here's my question:
I'm having trouble with working with HTML files in TextEdit. I'm on a Mac, using TextEdit as my HTML editor (I can not afford one of these other HTML editors, and I like using a simple text editor like TextEdit for HTML). Here's my problem: I open a new rich text document in TextEdit and write my HTML and then choose File>Save As and choose "HTML" under the File Format drop-down box. Having saved this file as an HTML file, I then open Safari and choose File>Open File and select my HTML file; however, when I do this, my web page's text does not appear in the browser window. Instead, the HTML code itself appears in the browser window, as if the browser was not interpreting it as HTML and converting it. The same problem happens when saving the file as a .htm file using Microsoft Word for Mac.
So, as another solution (at the suggestion of a helpful poster in a previous thread), I tried creating a plain text file in TextEdit (instead of a rich text file like before). Now, in TextEdit there is no option for saving plain text files as HTML files, so I simply save it as a Unicode-8 format and then find the file in Finder and change the extension to .htm myself (I've tried .html as well). This, fortunately enough, actually works! When I open the file in Safari I get to see my web page as expected. However, the first time I quit out of the application TextEdit and then try to reopen my .htm file in TextEdit, I no longer can see my HTML code. Instead, TextEdit shows me the actual web page text that I would expect to see when I open the file in a browser, and my HMTL code is lost.
Can someone please help me here? There has to be a way to edit HTML in TextEdit without the code disappearing every time you quit out of the application and reopen the HTML file. Any help is greatly, greatly appreciated. Thank you.

That's the problem -- once I convert it to plain text there is no longer an HTML option under the Save As drop down menu. The drop down menu's title is Plain Text Encoding instead of File Format and the only options I get are Unicode-8, Unicode-16, Western, Chinese, and so forth. I can save it as an HTML file, but only if the file is rich text, which doesn't work for HTML.
So, I can save it as plain text (.txt) and then go and change the extension myself, and like I said, it works if I do that. I can edit HTML in TextEdit and open the file properly in Safari to view my web page. The problem is (I went over all this in my first post) that, after that, if I exit TextEdit and reopen it, my document is no longer HTML code -- it is now simply the text of the web site as if I had opened it in a broswer.
What do you suggest I do?

  • Launching deluge from the .desktop file uses the sbin symlink... why?

Can someone explain the following?  Launching deluge-gtk from the package provided deluge.desktop under lxde causes both deluge-gtk and deluged to run from the sbin symlink.  You can see it by a simple:
% ps aux | grep deluge
    /usr/bin/python2 /usr/sbin/deluge-gtk
    /usr/bin/python2 /usr/sbin/deluged
In contrast, launching deluge-gtk from a shell (i.e. simply typing `deluge-gtk`) causes the expected /usr/bin/deluged and /usr/bin/deluge-gtk as viewed from the ps command.
% ps aux | grep deluge
    /usr/bin/python2 /usr/bin/deluge-gtk
    /usr/bin/python2 /usr/bin/deluged
If I modify /usr/share/applications/deluge.desktop using the fully qualified paths for the "TryExec=" and "Exec=" entries, deluge-gtk shows up as /usr/bin/deluge-gtk as it should, but the backend daemon, deluged, still shows up as /usr/sbin/deluged if I don't manually start it from the shell:
% ps aux | grep deluge
    /usr/bin/python2 /usr/bin/deluge-gtk
    /usr/bin/python2 /usr/sbin/deluged

After doing some more investigating, I have found that this only happens with the latest version of Java (1.6 update 2). What it is doing is loading the jnlp file that is located as the href link in the jnlp file that is launched. In other words, say you have two jnlp files; jnlp_a and jnlp_b. Say the href link inside jnlp_a points to the jnlp_b file. So the href line in the jnlp_a file would look like this 'href = "jnlp_b"'. In the latest version of Java, if you launch the jnlp_a file from a browser, Java Web Start will acutally load the jnlp_b file instead of the jnlp_a file that was launched. Should it be doing this? With the previous versions, JWS would read the href line and save this jnlp in the cache to be launched if the user creates a desktop shortcut. But it would still load the actual jnlp file that launched. Is this a bug in version 1.6 update 2?

  • You know that whole .desktop file security scare?

    It goes something like this:
    1) Open a malicious email attachment or go to a website with malicious javascript or whatever...
    2) A program is downloaded and executed with your permissions
    3) It edits ~/.local/applications/synaptic.desktop or whatever other popular program.
    4) In the new .desktop file it adds to the run command some nasty key logger, so now when you launch Synaptic (or pacman if someone were to attack Archers) it logs your keystrokes.
    5) Now it has your root password and can do whatever it wants.
I just want to know: How likely is this, really??
Can a website seriously just download and run a file without me knowing? I doubt Firefox would let that happen... Or could an email attachment be executed without me being able to read it first? I'm pretty sure it can't...
I don't understand why people seem to be concerned about .desktop files...
I'm not even worried about my Windows machine on my home network. My router is set to reject as much stuff as it can and all computers have remote log-ins disabled. The only security problem I worry about is that my Fiancee's online courses actually send .doc's through the net, which I've heard is bad practice.

What I've read about it has a nasty tweak, a properly crafted .desktop file could launch a dialog asking for your/root password, at that time it wrecks havoc in the system and open the add/remove software, updates or whatever is it disguised to do and the user doesn't realize what just happened.
Of course there is always the other option of running as user and do whatever it can, if the creator is smart and lucky enough he/she will be able to put a nasty payload on the autostart list and the user can have a zombie machine without even knowing.
It doesn't need to break the system to do a lot of damage, wiping or stealing data from the user account is enough. Of course, this has a higher probability of happening if you run and/or install everything you find in untrusted places without proper review first.
The thing is that there are so many distros and so many versions of each distro, each with slightly different settings, DEs, browsers and whatnot that I guess it still isn't worth the bother unlike with platforms where everyone uses the same browser, possibly the default settings that come with a clean system install and worse, no security updates/patches.
Add to this the complete lack of good sense and the common (and somewhat accepted I guess) practice of using cracks and keygens for you know what and you start to understand how come at least some users keep getting the same problems over and over again.
These days with linux it is extremely easy to keep the system up to date with the latest security fixes, users tend to look free alternatives to payed programs and look first in the package manager to see if it is already available, this alone helps a lot, add a dose of good sense and you should be good to go.

  • How to add shortcuts to user Start Menu and Taskbar or Desktop with using Microsoft Office 2013 Config file.

    Hello,
How can i add the shortcuts for Office 2013 feature (Word, excel, ext) to the users taskbar or desktop with using config.xml file while installing the Microsoft Office 2013 from SCCM?
I know how to do that with OCT, but i have another problem if i use OCT. So i have to do it with Config.file, but i don't know which code can i write on config.xml file to create shortcut on desktop or taskbar...
    Regards,

    Hi
There is a known issue about
changing the shortcut location for an Office 2013 application:
When you try to change the shortcut locations for Office 2013 applications in the Office Customization Tool (OCT), you receive the following error message:
Invalid start in folder. Please try again.
Then, you add the Start in location for Office 2013 and run a customized installation. When you double-click the shortcuts that are displayed on the desktop, Configure shortcuts does
not work and you receive the following error message:
Sorry, we couldn’t find your file. Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?
To work around this issue, type a single open bracket ([) in the Start in
    field.
In addition, refer to the link below on "Configure shortcuts" in OCT:

We have developed a desktop application using Flash software and published the same for MAC environment. When we double click on the index.app file, the application is working perfectly in Mac 10.6.7 at our office. But if the same index.app file is double clicked in Mac 10.6.7 at out clients location, its not opening. For your information the client is able to open this same application by double clicking on index.swf file. The main problem is that client is not able to open the application using index.app file at their office whereas we are able to do so at our office. Can anyone give some suggestions to sort this problem?

The most common reason is different versions of Flash, or different versions of web browsers used.  Some users may elect to not have Flash installed at all because of the processor overhead of Flash.  If you are going to make an application for a client, check what operating system and browser versions they are using first.  Then determine if a stand alone application is required, or if they have the necessary plugins to run specific browser enhanced code.
P.S. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control.  Mac is the shorthand for Macintosh, the operating system and computers made by Apple Inc.

I had a similar error which when I searched, came up with this thread.
My issue was resolved after I discovered that my RTF template was not really RTF. It was sill in MS Word DOC format. This was discovered by reviewing two templates in NOTEPAD. The MS-DOC files have a lot of "special" characters in them. My RTF was not really RTF.
After doing a SAVE AS - RTF format, then the preview worked as expected.

Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 workstations, the appdata folder is redirected to a network share at \\server\profiles and several users are unable to use bookmarks getting an error about the file being in use. I'm wondering if maybe my antivirus (Trend Micro) or my backups (Symantec) might be locking up the places.sqlite for these users? Though I don't understand why it would be for some users and not others. I can't be the first one and I'm not coming up with anything searching google endlessly. Anybody else run into this?

hello, yes this is likely caused by an external program locking access to the bookmarks/history database. you could try renaming the file in question & see if it is working when it is regenerated, this will clear bookmarks and the history though, so keep a backup...

I have a Mac computer and am trying to use a Photoshop CS4 program, but after accessing my desktop files through Adobe Bridge and clicking twice on any of the pictures to get into Photoshop, instead of entering photoshop, I get on the lefthand side an enlarged version of the picture with red, yellow and green buttons on top. Any suggestions on what is wrong, or what can be corrected ?

And there is the problem. Your pictures are opening up in Mac's own Preview app.
Do you want all your jpegs to open in Photoshop, or only when you are in Bridge?
Selecting a program to open a certain file is called: File Type Association.
You can choose this at the MacOS level or the Bridge level.
    Here's how to do both:
Either MacOS or Bridge has the wrong app associated with the jpeg. Let's start with MacOS
Close Bridge and Preview. Select one of your jpegs, and press Cmd i, That will bring up the file info window.
Go down to the "Open with" section of File Info.
Choose Photoshop CS4 and click on the Change All... button to apply this choice to every jpeg on your Mac.
Then open Bridge and see if double-clicking opens it in Photoshop.
Now that means all jpegs on your Mac will open in Photoshop.  Maybe you don't want that.
You can set your jpegs to open in Preview when Bridge is closed.
When you open Bridge, there is Preferences > File Type Associations where you can direct Bridge to open the jpegs in Photoshop when you are viewing in Bridge.

@jasonwryan Maybe this is hastily. But I find it impolite to move this to NC and post a link that you did not even read. If you did, you would have noticed that the topic goes beyond anything written in this wiki article. I really know what e desktop entry is.
    @ooo thank you.
For future readers, from the specs: Application launchers should expose them to the user (for example, as a submenu) within the context of the application. This is used to build so called "Quicklists" or "Jumplists".
