About SAX

Hi, I am new in SAX to parse XML document, and I have visited the following website about SAX
http://java.sun.com/xml/jaxp/dist/1.1/docs/tutorial/sax/2a_echo.html
I would like to know that when executing the programe line ..
saxParser.parse( new File(argv[0]), handler );
will the event functions (startDocument, startElement, endElement, endDocument) be automatic called ? Because I can't see where these functions are called . Thanks

yes, they will be called during the execution of the parse command.

    I want to read datas from xml in my java program...I tried many sites n tutorials,but nothing helped me..
    can you suggest some?

    I think the post that originally described the problem is this one:
    http://saloon.javaranch.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=31&t=006945
    It's been followed up by several posts like this one:

    and several in this forum. No information seems to have any effect on the content of the questions. I have given up answering posts from this person.

  • SAX parsers hanging (crimson and xerces) on InputStream

    Hi,
    While searching I've seen a lot of postings about sax parsers hanging on InputStreams. Many have no replies, some do. So far I've tried several fixes mentioned to no avail. I've seen it hang in the startDocument() and hang after reading the entire document. All sorts of hangs . . . Oh and in some situations it works fine, but that's not good enough.
    1. I tried wrapping the InputStream as described at the jdom.org FAQ with my own InputStream that hides the close() call. Then I pass my wrapper InputStream to the saxparser.parse() method. This didn't work, because you need to wrap SocketInputStream, not InputStream and SocketInputStream has package permissions which keep me from inheriting from it. If somebody can shed some light on how to do this, I'll try again, but for now that approach is shelved.
    2. I tried adding an EOF character, 0x1A, to the end of the xml string being sent over the socket. The parser still hangs.
    Any more suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Here's a faq question and answer from jdom.org. Can anybody explain how to do this in more detail? He mentions two workarounds. I've done the second and it works fine, but I'd prefer to get the first workaround working instead -- the wrapper InputStream idea.
    Why does passing a document through a socket sometimes hang the parser?
    The problem is that several XML parsers close the input stream when they read EOF (-1). This is true of Xerces, which is JDOM's default parser. It is also true of Crimson. Unfortunately, closing a SocketInputStream closes the underlying SocketImpl, setting the file descriptor to null. The socket's output stream is useless after this, so your application will be unable to send a response. To workaround, protect your socket's input stream with an InputStream wrapper that doesn't close the underlying stream (override the close() method), or read everything into a buffer before handing off to the JDOM builder:
    byte[] buf = new byte[length];
    new DataInputStream(inputStream).readFully(buf);
    InputStream in = new ByteArrayInputStream(buf);

  • SAX driver

    What is the classname of the SAX driver for the Oracle XML
    Parser for Java?
    Where can I find more information about SAX drivers?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    For more info on SAX go to the source: http://www.megginson.com

         public int getPackageNumber(){

         public ArrayList getMethodList(){
              return methodList;
          public static void main(String[] args)throws Exception{
               new SaxParser();
    }I am currently pulling out the package names, pulling out the classnames and then mapping these in a separate class - this works because the class and package names are declared in the same line, so if a package name appears in the package list 7 times, i know this package has 7 classes, and therefore i count the first 7 classes out of an array of all the classes and know that these are the right 7 for that package. However, the methods are a bit different:
    What I would like to do is to: for every class make a hashmap which maps the class name onto an arraylist of the methods, but i think i'm getting confused with my for loops. Or even just keep a tally of how many methods each class has, then I can work it out as i did with the packages -> classes.
    Does anyone know where im going wrong, or have any ideas at all?
    Thank you for your time,
    beccy
    :)

    I don't know if stacks are specifically mentioned in any SAX documentation.
    Basically, SAX sends you a stream of XML elements (open and close tags, characters, etc.), but it doesn't know anything about the underlying XML structure. You have to add that part (usually -- sometimes when writing a SAX application, you don't really care about the XML structure). XML structure is a tree.
    If you've ever written a recursive function that spans a tree, you'll have an idea what to do. You can use a stack to keep track of where you are in the tree. For example, if you open tag A, then you're "in" the A element for subsequent content in that document; if you then open tag B, you're in the B element; but when you close the B tag, you need the stack to tell you that now you're back in the A element.
    You may not need stacks, but it's likely. Find a good tutorial about SAX that mentions stacks and you'll be fine.

  • Loading XML tables.

    Hi,
    I have managed to successfully register xml schema and create the xml tables. I now need to load the data into these tables. I am now working on different scenarios of loading the XML data into these tables.
    I successfully experimented with the SQL/PLSQL options as well as SQL*Loader. I am reluctant to try the C and JAVA based interfaces because, frankly that is a completely new field for me and will present a huge learning curve that I won’t be able to pull off in short time I need to put this application in production.
    My scenario, I have about 250 XML tables which I’m going to populate from XML data files containing thousands of records. I need the lode process to be automatic such that I can do scheduled runs.
    The problem I have is SQL*Loader, and I am strictly going by the example given in the Oracle documentation, is that it requires for me to put ‘0’ for every record in the file. Here’s what my sample control file looks like,
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE *
    INTO TABLE "MCF_Custom_Form_Date_Rg" APPEND
    xmltype(xmldata)
    FIELDS
    xmldata LOBFILE (CONSTANT sampleload1.xml) TERMINATED BY '[XML]'
    BEGINDATA
    0
    0
    0
    This method works if I have finite number of records which I’ll need to count before hand and add a ‘0’ for each record. That’s not an optimal solution because I will not know the number of records before hand. Is there any way of changing this behavior?
    I am kind of stumped. What are my other alternatives? I read some where about SAX load utility. Where can I find more documentation about it? Can I run automated loading programs using it?
    Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    AVJ.

    Anand, you might want to try something using xmldb repository since it allows you to do the FTP operations for the xml files and FTP operations can be scheduled.
    First check of your database already accepts FTP operations.
    From the command prompt type
    FTP
    FTP> OPEN <DATABASE SERVER NAME> 2100
    Next it asks for a user which you can give database user and password.
    Now the lets consider this example schema.

    Here you can check at the top there is defaultTable="PURCHASEORDER". So after the registration of this schema you will find a table PURCHASEORDER in your database. This table is created only if the GENTABLE parameter value was set to TRUE during schema registration.
    Now you can FTP the xml-instance file. Note during the registration of the xml schema, you would have given a URL to identify this schema uniquely in the database.
    This URL should be present in the xml-instance file as part of noNamespaceSchemaLocation tag.
    Now for FTP operations you need couple of things like a folder path on the reposity. see the documentation on how create the folder on the XMLDB repository.
    Now FTP the xml instance file to the folder. Automatically using the value specified in the noNamespaceSchemaLocation tag, Oracle recognizes that this instance file belongs to a particular XML schema which has a defaultTable PURCHASEORDER. It will push this xml file automatically into this table.
    you can check that using select count(*) from purchaseorder after the FTP operation.
    You can automate this process of FTP operations.
    refer documentation XMLDB Developers Guide, it has detail information about repository and how to query your files in the repository.
    good luck.

  • Mapping lookups - RFC API

    Hi
    I have cr8ed rfc lookup in UDF,and I want to parse this xml and use only the value I need
    I read in the forum that there are 2 ways of doing it :
    DOM and SAX
    any1 knows good weblogs/threads which ellaborates on how or explain how it should b done ?
    thx,Shai

    Hi Shai,
    This blog and article deals with calling your RFC from your JAVA MAPPING / User Defined Function.
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/library/uuid/801376c6-0501-0010-af8c-cb69aa29941c
    /people/sravya.talanki2/blog/2005/12/21/use-this-crazy-piece-for-any-rfc-mapping-lookups
    And now going to the next half of your question regarding SAX and DOM parsers....
    The user defined functions that you write in your Graphical Mapping has nothing to do with Java Mapping.
    In your Graphical Mapping, the parsing of source structure is handled interannly by XI.
    But, when you go for an explicit mapping technique like Java Mapping, you have to parse the source XML structure, so that you can write the logic for your mapping.
    Java Mapping will execute a method called Execute, that will take the source XML structure as the Input Stream and then, you have to parse the Input STream and to do this parsing, you use SAX or DOM parser.
    DOM processor loads the entire XML into the memory and is processor intenseive, SAX does it element by element and so is not processor intensive.
    If you are using SAX parser, there are 5 methods . They are:
    1) Start of the document(startDocument)
    2) start of the element(startElement)
    3) end of the element(endElement)
    4) end of the document(endDocument)
    5) chars()
    Also check with any java site about SAX events how it works etc.

  • How to disable validation against DTD while unmarshalling

    Hi All
    I am relatively new to XML and JAXB. I have a tool that needs to run offline, however the XML documents that are being read in are automatically being validated against the DTD even though I have specified unmarshaller.setValidating(false). How can I completely diable validation while offline? Here is my code:
    context = JAXBContext.newInstance("my.xmlobjects.package");
    Unmarshaller u = context.createUnmarshaller();
    u.setValidating(false);
    testLog = (TestLog) u.unmarshal(new File("/path/to/my/file.xml"));
    I've also tried a suggestion I saw on another forum (note that I know nothing about SAX, I've been trying to make sense of the documentation):
    SAXParserFactory parserFactory = SAXParserFactory.newInstance();
    parserFactory.setValidating(false);
    SAXParser saxParser = parserFactory.newSAXParser();
    XMLReader xmlReader = saxParser.getXMLReader();
    EntityResolver entityResolver = new EntityResolver()
    public InputSource resolveEntity (String publicId, String systemId)
    return null;
    xmlReader.setEntityResolver(entityResolver);
    InputSource source = new InputSource(new FileInputStream("/path/to/my/file.xml");
    SAXSource saxSource = new SAXSource(xmlReader, source);
    context = JAXBContext.newInstance("my.xmlobjects.package");
    Unmarshaller u = context.createUnmarshaller();
    u.setValidating(false);
    testLog = (TestLog) u.unmarshal(saxSource);
    Both of these work when connected, but fail when disconnected from the internet. Is there an Oracle specific property that needs to be set here?
    Thanks
    Jeff

    Well you can create non validating parser programatically .
    http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs100/xml/programming.html#wp1069856
    i.e.
    SAXParserFactory spf = SAXParserFactory.newInstance();
    spf.setValidating(false);
    Hope this helps.

  • Read/update large xml files

    Hi,
    My requirement is to store and update data in xml files (no other option) which can be of size > 100MB.
    This is what I am doing at the moment..
    1. In order to be able to modify, delete nodes easily I am using DOM (Dom4j)
    2. As the file size is blowing up memory I have decided to distribute data in multiple files as one file per day. In a loop I load each file as Document, modify or delete nodes and write back to disk.
    The problem is its still taking a lot of time to complete one operation and intuitively I am not comfortable with this design, I guess there is better options available..
    Can anybody suggest a better alternatives for this using less memory and faster update times. I did a bit of search on google but none like JAXP or JAXB solve my problem.

    I had a similar problem.
    I had to read through an XML file and then output it in a certain format of text file. The normal size of the XML files I was working with would be between 200KB and 3MB.
    I wrote the code for doing this using DOM, and it worked okay, and reasonably fast.
    However when I tested the file with huge files (~150MB) it completely ate up the systems memory, and eventually crashed, even with a hugely extended Java heap.
    So to solve my problem I re-wrote the program using SAX. This concerned me at first, for I'm sure the same reasons you're thinking now. At first it took me a while to get my head around how to use it, but now that I understand how it works, I find SAX to be a superior way to work with XML in Java.
    In addition, the performance improvements are huge. The program now works over twice as fast, and uses a comparatively minimal amount of memory.
    So my suggestion is to do a bit of reading about SAX and port your application to use it. If you have any questions regarding this, I'd be happy to help, especially as I've recently done the same thing.

  • Difference between DOM and SAX

    Difference between DOM and SAX

    a sax parser is event driven meaning it processes the xml as it sees it and then forgets about it.
    you have to implement what you want the parser to do wants it reaches a certain event
    dom on the other hand keeps the whole structure of the message in memory as a tree.
    so there are strengths and weaknesses in both.
    you have to evaluate what you need

  • A problem about the policy of RMS which is added more than 500 principals

    Hello specialists ,
        I've a question about RMS , when I added more than about 500 principals (users & groups ) into a policy in the RMS , it will report an error for any operation about the policy , and I find the error message as followed (for theconvenience, I paste all of the logs in the weblogic).
       We have tested all of our environments : Weblogic , JBoss , Websphere , each of them  makes the same mistake . those operations include : try to open the documents protected by this kind of policies , to disable or enable the policies, to look the detail from the "adminui" . when decreasing the principals for this kind of policy to almost 450 (I am not sure the clearly number) with java code , the results will be ok .
       So anyone can help me ? It's really very important for us , becuase our customer refused to pay the left money of this project till this problem is resolved . and I have reported this problem to the Enterprise Support in Indian (the case is :181916446), but , obviously , it seems they are burning my patience  . At the same time , I think it's a problem of the product , I think the SQL is really very bad ,at least , not so good .
       Any help will be very appreciated !

    We are using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 . but it's well with MySQL & JBoss

  • "Right" way to mix SAX and DOM in app

    I'm writing a standalone desktop application that reads and stores data as XML files. Eventually, it might be converted to use some web services, but it's not a priority right now.
    What I need to do is to use an XML file, which could be large, as kind of a database -- there are many entries, each with a unique identifier, and the application will query the file to find those it needs to match and returns those as objects I'm mapping.
    At the moment, because this is a personal project and I'm using it to learn more technologies, I'm trying to (somewhat artificially) restrict myself to the pure Sun APIs. So far, my investigations have pointed to JAXP (by including Java EE 5 libraries) with StAX (including JAX-WS). Which raises two questions:
    1) To do this "right", do I really need to bundle my app with the entire JaveEE+Metro stack?
    2) Is there a better solution than StAX that's fully Java 5 compliant, even if it means stepping out of the Sun box? I haven't found many references to other solutions that are more recent than 2004. Is parsing XML on an app that has nothing to do with an appserver that uncommon?

    More likely than not, I won't be abstracting to that degree. If the current structure isn't right, I'd update the app instead of storing that kind of information in more files.
    I imagine at this point an example would be more effective. The app is itself more of an inventory browser that can jump around different searches dynamically. As an illustration, imagine that it's an inventory for DVDs. One central file will be your collection (with each entry containing a movie ID, date of purchase, etc). Another file would be more static, a list of DVDs themselves. These entries would contain information about the package itself -- how many discs? What's the title of the package? Which special features does it have? It would also point to an entry in yet another file which would have information about the film, containing biographies of the people listed under the movie credits.
    Basically, I want a flatfile database that I can do joins on that are split up into different files. There are few files (here, one) that will be constantly updated by the user. The others could be modified if needed, but it's not going to be optimized for it. (For example, you could own a DVD that nobody's ever heard of, and put in the info yourself.) Periodically, one or more of the more static files is updated and will be downloaded into the app.
    One of the advantages I see for this is that, in the future, I could with few changes turn this into more of a web service. Instead of pushing changes in those few files, the app would look to a web service for the data it would now find in files on the user's hard drive. But for now, it also has to be one standalone package.
    To answer the question, the file that will most commonly be updated by the user is the one that I don't have problems loading into memory in full. It's the other data that it links to which I want to be able to search and load into objects dynamically. My current implementation is to run the file through SAX and grab the data as it sees it, but it's really ugly. That could very well be how I'm using it and not because I'm trying to shoehorn some functionality into a technique it doesn't fit, but I'd like to find that out. ;)

  • ? - Is there a way to validate 1 XML record at a time, using the SAX or oth

    Hello!
    Before running into space problems, i generated an XML file from a 'pipe delimited' file and and then processed that XML file thru a SAXParser 'validator' and the data was correctly validated, using the RELAXNG Schema patterns as the validation criteria!
    But as feared, the XML file was huge! (12 billion XML recs. generated from 1 billion 'pipe' recs.) and i am now trying to find a way to process 1 'pipe' record at a time, (ie) read 1 record from the 'pipe delimited' file, convert that rec. to an XML rec. and then send that 1 XML rec. thru the SAXParser 'validator', avoiding the build of a huge temporary XML file!
    After testing this approach, its looks like the SAXParser 'validator' (sp.parse) is expecting only (1) StringBufferInputStream as input,and after opening, reading and closing just (1) of the returned StringBufferInputStream objects, the validator wants to close up operations!
    Where i have the "<<<<<" you can see where i'm calling the the object.method that creates the 'pipe>XML' records 'sb.createxml' and will be returning many occurances of the StringBufferInputStream object, where (1) StringBufferInputStream object represents (1) 'pipe>XML' record!
    So what i'm wondering, is if there is a form of 'inputStream' class that can be loaded and processed at the same time! ie instead of requiring that the 'inputStream' object be loaded in it's entirety, before going to validation?
    Or if there is another XML 'validator' that can validate 1 XML record at a time, without requiring that the entire XML file be built first?

    Well,i think you can use the streaming API for xml processing provided by weblogic.It is pull model,not push model like SAX.with it,you can select the events you want without having to react to every event,and you can filter the events out.
    Sun also provide such streaming API for xml processing,and i got an very simple introduction about it on the Chinese Sun developer site.but i couldn't find any other infomation about it elsewhere! If you have such materials,please send to my email:[email protected],and if I have it,i will be sure to post the links here.hope it helps more or less:)

  • Get document url in SAX ContentHandler

    Hopefully a simple question, but how to get the name or URL of the current document handled by a SAX ContentHandler? I don't see this in the startDocument or startElement callbacks.
