Abstraction/ tailoring of standard enterprise services

Hi,
we use standard SAP services modeled in the ESR. In a middle layer (CAF in our case) we abstract the fields we need.
I was wondering if it's not better to have an abstraction layer in the backend as well (or replace the CAF with backend abstraction layer), because all data in the service is transfered every time to the CAF.
Isn't it better to limit the data that is retrieved from the backend system or is it possible to configure the backend standard services to limit the data that is transfered?
kind regards,
Pieter

Yes, it's only available as of NW 7.02.
Depending on what your actual requirements are (i.e. You always want to limit the response structure or only in certain cases) then you can version your operation/s (one for a detailed response & one for a not so deailed response). So you would add an additional field (e.g. indicator for detailed or summary response) in the request structure apply some delta logic in your CAF layer to decide which operation to invoke.
Then in the backend you could wrap the standard enterprise service in a custom proxy for each operation & you would get the desired abstration. It's a very unattractive approach though.

  • What adapter to use for calling standard enterprise services from PI?

When calling a standard enterprise service that rtesides e.g. on an SAP ERP system, what is the adapter that should be used? Is it a WS adapter, a Proxy adapter, or something else?

You could use Proxy adapter, WS adapter  or  SOAP Adapter

  • Standard Enterprise Services

    Hi everybody,
I am approaching an E-SOA implementation.
Before starting to write web services in the wrong way, I preferred having a look at what SAP was doing, so I installed ECC-SE (Service Enablement) on an ECC 6.0 system.
At first, I was proposing an inside-out approach for custom services, following this path:
    - build a solid remote enabled function module
    - create a custom Business Object (in trx SWO1) and link the FM to the BO as an API method
    - create a web service definition on the BO for its methods
    - release the web service and bla bla bla
Then I had a look at standard services coming with the ECC-SE addon, and quickly realized that they're all (most of them at least) developed starting from an XI messaf interface, that is with an outside in approach.
The question is: what would you recommend? Is there a special reason for SAP building Enteprise Services this way, and not <i>my way</i>? (For instance, to have a common repository for data types...?)
    Thank you very much.
    Regards,
    Alex

    Hi Anton,
Thanks for your really appreciated "two cents"
In fact, after posting my thread here, I thought hardly about it, and found some <b>pros and cons for the outside-in approach</b>:
    - by defining our own SWCV, we can set a dependency from SAP standard one(s), and <i>use standard data types in building custom one</i>. Do you think this is a good idea actually?
    - placing the interface design on XI Integration Repository, we're somehow compelled <i>to create element and structures that will better resemble what is expected in a WSDL</i>... Abaper in fact (no offense for Abaper! I'm one of them as well) are usually still DDIC-minded, with those ugly uppercase fieldnames, so that it's hard with inside-out approach to have kina good data definitions...
    - <i>data definitions are defined centrally</i> in Integration Repository, and basic data types can be reused in a number of scenarios, not only for SAP centric services.
    - on the other hand, the outside-in approach brings with himself a XI embedded limitation: <i>any WSDL will have exactly one and only one operation</i>, which is not abig deal, you'd say, but from my standpoint it's really annoying, and very little SOA compliant.
<b>Once again, BPX's, you're welcome to express your valuable opinion.</b>
    Cheers,
    Alex

  • Transfer Of Data from Sap to Oracle with the help of Enterprise Services.

    Hello,
We want to transfer data from Sap to Oracle using standard Enterprise Services. Some fields were not available in the existing standard Enterprise Services,so we have enhanced the existing Services by writing code inside BADI available with Enterprise Services.Rest of the fields we have mapped with the existing fields available in standard Enterprise Services. But,the Oracle people want to fetch all data from Sap without entering any input as a mandatory field in the Enterprise Services. The existing standard Enterprise Services require to enter any field as mandatory and are not accepting the range in input for multiple records.e.g.All enterprise Services related to Sales Orders are displaying only one sales Order. We have searched all Enterprise Services for Sales Order(related to reading of data),but not able to find service which would display mutiple records without entering any input.ECC_SALESORDER009QR is the only service which is displaying multiple records without entering any input, but the required fields are not available in this service. So,kindly suggest what we need to do further.
1.Should we go for customization of services completely,so that it would fulfil our requirement.
2.Are there  standard Enterprise Services exists which would we give us data in range(all records).
If they exists, please specify the names of Services for reading Purchase Order,Production Order,BOM etc.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Divya.

    Hi Vaibhav,
Let me tell you the objective in detail.
    Objective.
To develop a package solution which will work as a bridge between Oracle APS and SAP system so that customers using SAP will be able to use advantages of Oracle APS for their planning needs.
This will consist of following major components:
OA Templates is an Oracle utility to load data from any legacy system to Oracle APS using standard flat files.
Oracle has developed an Application Integration Architecture which is a standard architecture used for integration of Oracle products with other systems.
Enterprise services is an SAP utility to communicate with SAP.
AIA canonicals are standard canonicals developed by Oracle where we have to map data fields from destination system (Oracle APS) and source system (SAP)
Fusion middleware is being used to develop application interfaces following AIA standards.
    Tasks at stake:
Mapping of Oracle APS fields and SAP Enterprise Service fields to AIA canonicals
Technical work of developing middleware using Oracle Fusion
From Sap side,we have to map fields which we have received from Oracle with the help of Enterprise Services, rest  consumption of these services is done by Oracle guys. So,suggest is there enterprise services available which would give us multiple records .
    Thanks & Regards,
    Divya.

  • PI 7.1 enterprise services: How to find & invoke SAP HCM enterprise Service

    Hi all,
in PI 7.1, i read, there is support of enterprice services.
is my current understandings right about PI 7.1 and enterprise services:
1.the standard BAPIs, standard RFC that were provided in R/3 are replaced by standard enterprise services in SAP ECC.
2.a nonSAP application can invoke an enterprise service in the same way as a nonSAP application used to call an RFC in the R/3.
I want to view how an enterprise service of any SAP module can be called by a nonSAP applicaiton.
are there any doc or blog which shows this.
    is possible with/wihout PI.
    We have follwoing things installed.
    1. PI 7.1 SP4.
    2. SAP ECC 6.0, i am dealing with SAP HCM module.
are there any enterprise services of HCM available (e.g standard enterprise services given by SAP for HCM module).
basically i want to test whether a nonSAP application like a java application, can it get some info using standard HCM enterprise services provided by SAP.
I explored esWorkplace (http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/esworkplace), but it does not display HCM related process components under the column "DISCOVER ENTERPRISE SERVICES".

  • Regd. use of enterprise services : Best approach

    Hi Experts,
I have configured a scenario using standard enterprise services, used soamanager of ABAP and tested the services,it works perfectly.
But the issue came with terms of security ,it seems we cannot expose our sap system as url for the services.
need to use PI to connect to the third party...I need suggestions on following
    1. Can we connect ABAP of PI to ABAP of SAP ,with some configuration , i dont want to create any additional
structures is PI apart from the one which i imported.
2.If i set up a soap to proxy(ABAP) then i need to duplicate the structure for source and use the standard ES
service at proxy receiver, but i want to avoid duplication as it is cumbersome to do for all services.
3.If i create communication /service user i need to give access for some of sap tables  to support the service functionalities.
what is the best approach for exposing services from PI using standard enterprise service.
    Any pointer will be appreciated.

    Srinivas
Edited by: Srinivas on Jul 7, 2010 7:29 PM

    Hi
Following is answer of your question:
    >(1)How can I search relevant Enterprise services in PI for the SAP R/3 BAPI.
There is no way to look for enterprise service for BAPI, ES are harmonized services based on GDT whereas BAPI is more SAP oriented in datatype definitions, only way is to find out is look into code as many ES are calling BAPI internally. Best way to identify correct ES is business use (like Purchase Order Creation etc)
    >(2)If relevant ES is available then what are the steps to be performed?
It depends how you want to use this ES, you can call this ES from outside world (read thirdparty tools, application) and these services can be used as ready-to-use building block for new applications. You must know URL of wsdl and security setting (user/password) to use it with any application. You can call it from ABAP, .Net, Java applications. You can test ES with any SOAP testing tool like WSNavigator or SOAP UI.
    >(3)If relevant ES is not availabe then what are the steps to be performed?
You have few options if ES is not available, design of your own by following proper governance model (i.e. PIC process) or you can live with existing BAPI, RFC and convert them into Web Service using webservice wizard available in SE80 and SE37.

  • Enhancing Enterprise Service - Input Message Enhancement

    Hi
I am using a standard Enterprise Service and have successfully Enhanced the Output Message (Created a Data Type Enhancement in PI), did the BADI Implementation and mapped the Outgoing Response in Outbound Processing of BADI Implementation and able to get the new added fields in the Response from the Service.
Now need to understand, how to Enhance the Input Message (have gone through the Enhancement Guide) and as I understand need to Enhance the element in Inbound Processing of BADI. I can see the enhanced Data Type which I created in ESR and then Implemented the Proxy for Data Type Enhancement,  nevertheless unsure what I can do with the data type in INPUT parameter/structure. As I need to map this to another Changing type parameter to be able to validate this in Outbound Processing., although I cannot create a new parameter in the Method.
Can someone guide in steps how to do Input Message enhancement - what to do I code in Inbound Processing-Method to make that available in Outbound Processing(Need to do validation based on this field to send the response back).
    Thanks
    Swetank

Have managed to do the same. Declared the Enhanced Input variable in public section of the class and was able to refer to the same in Outbound processing.

  • Basic questions on Enterprise Services

    Hello,
I have a few open questions on the topic for myself and hope that you can help me to answer them:
    1) In my Systemlandscape I have several ECC 6.0 systems and a PI system. Now if I want to use a SAP standard webservice, let's say some of the customer fact sheet webservices.. what would be the procedure?
Would I need to identify which packages the content is in and then download these packages from SAP service marketplace? And has this to be done on PI side or on the backend side? Or both?
If I then want to use one of those standard webservices, e.g. "Find Customer Address Basic Data by Name and Address", where would the service call be directed to? To SAP PI or to the backend system?
    2) If I have a Webservice which should extract mass data, e.g. data about all customers - would this be a feasible web service scenario? Or a web services only used to extract single customers in general? I wonder about things like performance, timeouts, error handling, etc.
    3) Composition
What tool is at the moment used for composing web services? Is it some design tool on PI (BPM?) or is it rather Visual Composer on CE or even WebDynpro (ABAP or Java?)
I hope you can help me to clear up some of these questions.
    Best Regards,
    Peter

    Hi Peter,
    Answers to your questions:
Would I need to identify which packages the content is in and then download these packages from SAP service marketplace? And has this to be done on PI side or on the backend side? Or both?
You need to ensure that the content exists on both if you want to use SAP PI  to customize the SAP standard enterprise services & create proxies in the back-end (ECC). You could also just use the standard services as they come shipped from SAP, in that case you just need to ensure that the content exists in ECC.
If I then want to use one of those standard webservices, e.g. "Find Customer Address Basic Data by Name and Address", where would the service call be directed to? To SAP PI or to the backend system?
It depends how you set up your scenario. You could have the web service mediated through SAP PI or another ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) using different technology. In that case, the service call will be directed to SAP (or ESB) & then the back-end. You could also setup a point-to-point scenario where the service call is routed from the consumer straight to the back-end. Ultimately, the call has to reach the ECC back-end to process, what changes is what is put in betwwen the consumer & the ECC back-end.
If I have a Webservice which should extract mass data, e.g. data about all customers - would this be a feasible web service scenario? Or a web services only used to extract single customers in general? I wonder about things like performance, timeouts, error handling, etc.
I wouldn't recommend this kind of scenario when using web services. It would more relevant for maybe batch or asynchronous scenarios, also maybe mediated through SAP PI. All your concerns are valid.
What tool is at the moment used for composing web services? Is it some design tool on PI (BPM?) or is it rather Visual Composer on CE or even WebDynpro (ABAP or Java?)
This question isn't all that clear. For web services 'Composition' you can use the ESR (Enterprise Service Repository) that comes shipped with SAP PI or SAP CE. ccBPM in SAP PI is used for async messaging so that can't work for web services.
For 'Orchestration' of web services, SAP CE would be your preferred tool & you could also use Netweaver BPM that comes with CE to orchestrate several web service calls for a specific business process. This doesn't stop you from using anything else (like Java for example) to do your orchestration but you want the flexibility of being able to change a business process on the fly & SAP CE with BPM provides this.

  • Enterprise services for ERP Shipment

    Hi,
We are working on a scenario to send shipment details to SAP PI system via standard Enterprise services whenever the shipment is created in ERP.

  • Enterprise Service to assign customerID to companyID

We do not intend to use the Business Partner concept to create new customers in our ERP system using Enterprise Services. Is there any Enterprise service available to assign a customer to a sales account (company code)? We have found the IS-Media related Enterprise service Business Partner Sales Account, but this can not be used for our purpose as we do not want to use the Business Partner concept. The goal is to do invoicing in the ERP system, so we need to Create Customer Basic Data (OK), Assign Customer to Company Code (NOT OK), assign Customer to Sales Arrangement (OK), Create Sales Order (OK), Create Invoice (OK). We are lacking a service for assigning the customer to the company code for invoicing and accounting purposes. Can someone please assist me?

Thank you for your answer. I have already done as suggested, but our intention is to use the Standard Enterprise Services if available. And to be honest, I do find it hard to believe that there is no standard service to assign a customer to a company code, and provide company relevant data. I will keep on searching in the Enterprise Worplace. Do you know of a BAPI or RFC? I want to avoid to create a function/WS based on BDC Recording.

  • Import Enterprise Service into Repository and Enhance Service

    Hi experts.
We've activated with transaction SOAMANAGER a enterprise service discovered in ENTERPRISE SERVICE WORKPLACE in SAP BACKEND.
In SAP PI we created a external definition from WSDL definition and we've developed a SOAP to SOAP scenario where SOAP receiver is pointing  to this service. Everytring is working fine but I have some doubts.
    1. Is that the best way to proceed? Should I have to import metadata in someway from enterprise service workplace into repository and not create a external definition from import wsdl retrive in ENTERPRISE SERVICE WORKPLACE?
    2. Now we have a new requriment and we have to add to a new field into response message. So we need to enhance the enterprise service. How we can get that?
    Thanks a lot.
    Regards.

    Hi.
    We're using 7.11.
First question resolved. In this guide is explained how to enhance a standard enterprise service:
One of the steps is create a enhanced data type from original data type and then import this enhanced data type to backend with SPROXY transaction. Then you can enhance the standard code with BADIs. But my question is, how I import to SAP PI repository the metadata of a standard enterprise service (data types, message types, service interface). I'm using the enterprise service SupplierERPBasicDataByElementsQueryResponse_In.

  • What is SAP ESB (Enterprise Service Bus)?

Hi fellow sdners gurus…  I have been reading threads about SAP SOA and ESB.
I do not want to start a debate on wether XI is an ESB, but more of a statement to what is SAP ESB (if XI it is, then be it).
    1) What is SAP ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) today (I could not find a clear answer to is)?
    2) Who uses this SAP ESB in production currently and what kind of environment (i.e. strictly SAP backend systems, or combination of various vendors’ backend systems)?
Can someone share some light on this topic?
As a reminder, an ESB is expected to exhibit the following characteristics (source Wikipedia):
    •     It is usually operating-system and programming-language agnostic; for example, it should enable interoperability between Java and .NET applications.
    •     It uses XML (eXtensible Markup Language) as the standard communication language.
    •     It supports web-services standards.
    •     It supports various MEPs (Message Exchange Patterns) (e.g., synchronous request/response, asynchronous request/response, send-and-forget, publish/subscribe).
    •     It includes adapters for supporting integration with legacy systems, possibly based on standards such as JCA
    •     It includes a standardized security model to authorize, authenticate and audit use of the ESB.
    •     To facilitate the transformation of data formats and values, it includes transformation services (often via XSLT or XQuery) between the format of the sending application and the receiving application.
    •     It includes validation against schemas for sending and receiving messages.
    •     It can uniformly apply business rules, enriching messages from other sources, the splitting and combining of multiple messages and the handling of exceptions.
    •     It can provide a unified abstraction across multiple layers
    •     It can route or transform messages conditionally, based on a non-centralized policy (i.e. no central rules-engine needs to be present).
    •     It is monitored for various SLA (Service Level Agreement) threshold message latencies and other SLA characteristics.
    •     It (often) facilitates "service classes," responding appropriately to higher and lower priority users.
    •     It supports queuing, holding messages if applications are temporarily unavailable.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Jean-Michel
