Access extended class in JSP.
I am reading <<JSP weekend crash course>>. Following is a example in the book.
FruitMap.java
public class FruitMap extends java.util.HashMap{}
I saved FruitMap.java file <tomcat-install>\webapps\ROOT\Web-Inf\classes and executed javac FruitMap.java command.
FruitMap.class was created succussfuly.
I stop and restart the Tomcat server.
The jsp file fruitPrice.jsp is following:(only first a few lines pertain to my question).
<%@ page import="java.util.*" %>
<%
String selectedFruit = request.getParameter("selectedFruit");
if (selectedFruit == null) {
selectedFruit = "apples";
%>
<jsp:useBean id="fruitList" class ="FruitMap">
<%
fruitList.put("apples","2.99");
fruitList.put("oranges","2.59");
fruitList.put("plums","3.99");
%>
</jsp:useBean>
<html>

document.fruitForm.submit();

function calcTotal() {
document.fruitForm.total.value = roundNumber(price*parseInt(document.fruitForm.quantity.value),2);

Why the FruitMap class is not recognized? I am using Tomcat 3.2.3 .
Hi silverbullet,
U haven't imported the class FruitMap at the top of the JSP, import it and I think it should work.
eg ..
if FruitMap class has the default package then
<%@ page import="FruitMap" %>
And another thing, just for sharing........u don't have to import java.lang.* and java.util.* in JSP, they are imported by default..........

Accessing custom classes from JSP
Hi Guys,
I am having some problems accessing my custom classes from my JSP.
1) I've created a very simple class, SimpleCountingBean that just has accessors for an int. The class is in the package "SimpleCountingBean". I compiled this class locally on my laptop and uploaded the *.class file to my ISP.
2) I've checked my classpath and yes, the file "SimpleCountingBean/SimpleCountingBean.class" is located off of one of the directories listed in the classpath.
3) When I attempt to use this class in my JSP, via the following import statement:
import "SimpleCountingBean.*"
I get the following compile error
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: SimpleCountingBean/SimpleCountingBean
I'm pretty sure that my classpath is properly setup because when I purposely garble the import statement, I get the "package not found" compile error.
Do I need to upload some other files in addition to the class file? Any suggestions would of course be appreciated.
Sonny.Trying to get some clearer view.. so don't mind..
So you uploaded all your .jsp files into your account which is:
home/sonny
and it compiles and work. But custom classes doesn't seems to be working, where did you place your classes?
From my knowledge of tomcat, classes are normally placed in, in this case:
home/sonny/web-inf/classes
Maybe it differs from windows enviroment to *nix enviroment.. well, I'm just saying out so if its not the case.. don't mind me. -
Accessing Constant classes from jsps
org.apache.struts.taglib.html.Constants is a java constant class with no getter/setter methods
is this the only way (not using other form beans) to get the value of a constant within that class
can we use pageContext or any other expression language to do things like this?
<c:set var="tokenKey">
<jsp:expression>
org.apache.struts.taglib.html.Constants.TOKEN_KEY
</jsp:expression>
</c:set>
thank youEL doesn't have any way to access constants.
What you have there is pretty much the only method without using other beans.
There are certain workarounds that have been proposed. Javaranch had an article on it a while ago:

Accessing classes in web-inf/classes within JSP
hi,
i know this is probably a very basic question..or nobody would ever do something like this..but I'mn curious:
i have a class Car.class in the WEB-INF/classes directory and I want to access it from withing JSP : <% Car c = new Car(); %>
the problem is that the server tries to load the class from the package : org.apache.jsp.Car ! when putting car into an own package like my.Car then it works.. but how do i get it working without putting it into a separate package?!
thxYou could try packaging it in a jar, and placing the jar in WEB-INF/lib... I have no idea if that will help, but when you're debugging, you have to be willing to try anything.. :)

Try packaging your classes eg:package myClasses;and import them:<%@page import="myClasses.*"%>Should fix the problem.

Problem with Dynamically accessing EJB Class objects in WL 7.0 SP1
I am trying to build a component which has the ability to instantiate and execute
an known EJB method on the fly.
I have managed to build the component but when I try and execute it I get a ClassNotFoundException.
I know that the EJB I am trying to invoke is deployed and available on the server,
as I can see it in the console, I also seen to have been able to get the remote
interface of the object, my problem occurs when I try and access the class object
so I can perform a create on the object and then execute my method
The code I have written is below:
private Object getRemoteObject(Context pCtx, String pJNDIName, String pHomeBean)
throws Exception {
String homeCreate = "create";
Class []homeCreateParam = { };
Object []homeCreateParamValues = {};
try {
//This call seems to work and doesn't throw an exception
Object home = pCtx.lookup(pJNDIName);
//However this call throws a java.lang.ClassNotFoundException
Class homeBean = Class.forName(pHomeBean);
Method homeCreateMethod = homeBean.getMethod(homeCreate,homeCreateParam);
return homeCreateMethod.invoke(home, homeCreateParamValues);
} catch (NamingException ne) {
logStandardErrorMessage("The client was unable to lookup the EJBHome.
Please make sure ");
logStandardErrorMessage("that you have deployed the ejb with the JNDI
name "+pJNDIName+" on the WebLogic server ");
throw ne;
} catch (Exception e) {
logStandardErrorMessage(e.toString());
throw e;
Any advice would be really appreciated, I'm fast running out of ideas, I suspect
it has something to do with the class loader but I'm not sure how to resolve it
Regards
Jo CorlessHello Joanne,
Congratulations! I'm very happy that you've managed to fix your problem. It's
always essential to understand how to package applications when deploying on BEA
WebLogic. Usually, by throwing everything into an EAR file solves just about all
the class loader problems. :-) Let us know if you have any further problems that
we can assist you with.

I've fixed it!!!!!!!!
Thanks to everyone who gave me help!!!!
The class loader was the culprit which is what I suspected all along.
As soon
as I put the 2 jar files I was using into an EAR file the problem went
away!!!!!
Thanks again

Hello Joanne,
As Mr. Woollen mentioned, I also believe it's a problem with the class
loader.
You need to be careful how you arrange your EJBs, because WebLogic has
a specific
method in which it loads classes in an EAR, JAR, and WAR file(s). Please
refer
to http://dev2dev.bea.com/articles/musser.jsp for more information about
BEA WebLogic
class loading mechanisms and caveats. Also, try printing out the various
methods
that are available on the object that was returned to you via reflection.
For
example, use the getMethods() method, which returns an array of Method
objects
that you can subsequently cycle through and print out the various method
names.
This way you can discover if the class found/returned to you is indeed
the one
you intend to locate.
Hope this helps,

Rob Woollen <[email protected]> wrote:
I believe the issue is the home interface class for this EJB is not
available in the class loader which is doing the reflection.
If you do:
getClass().getClassLoader().loadClass(homeInterfaceClassName)
I suspect it will fail. Reflection still requires that the class be
loadable.

Hi Slava,
If I make my code look like you describe below I get a compliationerror telling
me that
home.getMethod() is not recognised (no such method)
If I change it slightly and use
Method homeCreateMethod =
home.getClass().getMethod(homeCreate,homeCreateParam);
The code will compile OK but when executed it still throws a NoSuchMethodException
Any ideas ?
Thanks for your help so far
Regards
Jo Corless
Your code should look like
Object home = pCtx.lookup(pJNDIName);
Method homeCreateMethod =
home.getMethod(homeCreate,homeCreateParam);
return homeCreateMethod.invoke(home, homeCreateParamValues);

Hi Ryan,
I also wanted to mention that if you do a "header search" in this
particular
newsgroup
with the search query as "reflection", you will see many previousmessages
regarding
reflection and EJBs. I believe you could learn a lot from thedifficulties
that
others have faced and solved.I tried that and although there was a number of similar cases noneof them
actually
seem to fix my issue. Thanks for the suggestion though
Are the EJBs that you are trying to access accessible via your
system
classpath?
Try to avoid having them accessible via the main system classpath,and
only bundle
them in your appropriate EJB jar files (contained in an EAR file,for
example).Maybe I should have laid the problem out a little clearer.
I have a number of EJB's bundled up in a JAR file which is hot deployedto
the
server. Within this first JAR file is an EJB (SSB) component that
needs
to
be
able to invoke a known method on another EJB. This second EJB may
or
may
not be
within the first JAR file but it also will be hot deployed.
The component trying to invoke the method on the 2nd EJB has to
be
able to
create
an instance of the 2nd EJB without actually knowing anything bar
a
JNDI
Name which
is passed in at runtime.
I can get as far as doing the
Object home = pCtx.lookup(pJNDIName);
This returned a class with the name
"com.csc.edc.projects.allders.httppostoffice.postman.PostmanBean_mp8qy2_Home
Impl_WLStub"
My problem seems to occur when I try and invoke the create method
Method homeCreate = home.getClass().getMethod("create", new Class[0]);
My code throws a java.lang.NoSuchMethodException at this point so
I
am
unable
to progress to the next step of :
Object bean = homeCreate.invoke(home, null);
So I can return the instantiated bean back to the calling client.
Why am I getting the NoSuchMethodException, is is because I am gettinga
stub
back rather than the home interface and if so how do I get the truehome
interface
from the bean
Thanks in advance

Unable to compile class for JSP
Please can anyone help me to solve this.
Actually,this is the condition.
In my db,there is a table called UserPassword, which has 4
fields(empNo,UserName,password,level). Now I want to do these things:
When the user submits the data to create a new account via HTML form, it submits the data to the file called CreateAcc.jsp. In this file it perform some logic,here are they.
1)To check the empNo,if it is already exist in the DB,
if empNo =exist then display error.(record already exist)
if empNo =notexist then do task 2).
2)check the UserName,if it is already exist in the db,
if UserName=exist then display error.(because it's a primary key)
if UserName=notexist then do task 3).
3)Create a new user account and save it to the db.
To do these tasks,I never create a new objects for the tasks 1) and 2).
only for task 3)create an object.
Is it the right way?
Here is the file CreateAcc.jsp
<%@ page language="java" %>
<%@ page import="core.UserAccManager" %>
<%@ page import="data.UserPassword" %>
<jsp:useBean id="UserAccManager" class="core.UserAccManager" scope="session"/>
<jsp:setProperty name="UserAccManager" property="*"/>
<jsp:useBean id="UserPassword" class="data.UserPassword" scope="session"/>
<jsp:setProperty name="UserPassword" property="*"/>
<%
String nextPage ="MainForm.jsp";
if(UserPassword.verifyEmpno()){
if(UserPassword.verifyUsername()){
if(UserPassword.createAcc()) nextPage ="MsgAcc.jsp";
}else{
nextPage="UserNameExist.jsp";
else{
nextPage="UserAccError.jsp";
%>
<jsp:forward page="<%=nextPage%>"/>The directory structure:
UserPassword.java- F:/Project/core/data/UserPassword.java
UserAccManager.java - F:/Project/core/UserAccManager.java
Now both are compiling.I put the class files into the TOMCAT,as follows.

Problem while trying to execute Java class in JSP using RunTime Class
Hi,
I want to execute a JAVA class through a JSP. For this I am using following code ....
JSP (AAA.jsp) CODE ............
try
String[] cmd = new String[3];
cmd[0] = "cmd.exe" ;
cmd[1] = "/C" ;
cmd[2] = "java -DPeBS_CONFIG_HOME=D:/CASLIntegration/PeBS/srcvob/PeBS/config Service_Statement_Application 22/May/2001 22/May/2003";
Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
System.out.println("Execing " + cmd[0] + " " + cmd[1] + " " + cmd[2]);
Process proc = rt.exec(cmd);
// any error message?
StreamGobbler errorGobbler = new StreamGobbler(proc.getErrorStream(), "ERROR");
// any output?
StreamGobbler outputGobbler = new StreamGobbler(proc.getInputStream(), "OUTPUT");
// kick them off
errorGobbler.start();
outputGobbler.start();
// any error???
int exitVal = proc.waitFor();
System.out.println("ExitValue: " + exitVal);
catch (Throwable t)
t.printStackTrace();
StreamGobbler THread class Code ..........
import java.util.*;
import java.io.*;
public class StreamGobbler extends Thread
InputStream is;
String type;
StreamGobbler(InputStream is, String type)
this.is = is;
this.type = type;
public void run()
try
InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(is);
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(isr);
String line=null;
while ( (line = br.readLine()) != null)
System.out.println(type + ">" + line);
} catch (IOException ioe)
ioe.printStackTrace();
I have successfully compiled and placed the class file for the above class in JSP's servlet engine. However, when I execute the JSP through explorer Web Browser, I get following compile time error:
An error occurred between lines: 36 and 86 in the jsp file: /casl/LocalApp/VehicleServiceStmt/AAA.jsp
Generated servlet error:

StreamGobbler outputGobbler = new StreamGobbler(proc.getInputStream(), "OUTPUT");
I am unable to determine the reason of why the constructor which exists in the StreamGobbler Class is not recevied in JSP. If I try to write the same code in JSP as a JAVA class, keeping StreamGobler class same, the programme executes successfully.
Please help me find solution to this at the earliest. Thanks in advance,
PrachiThanks,
I got it working by making the constructor Public.

Unable to compile class for JSP. apache-tomcat-6. What could be wrong?
Hello, I am new to JSP and I am trying a very basic jsp and class file on Windows XP. I get the Unable to compile class for JSP.
Steps that I have done:
javac ch06_01.java , placed the ch06_01.class under
C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\webapps\ch06\WEB-INF\classes
Then grabbed the ch06_02.jsp and placed it under
C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\webapps\ch06\
When I run it (by placing this into Explorer or Firefox URL
http://localhost:8080/ch06/ch06_02.jsp) I get the error further
below. Things I have done and made sure they are in place are:
set up JAVA_HOME to C:\Apps\jdk1.6.0_06
Using CATALINA_BASE: C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16
Using CATALINA_HOME: C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\temp
Using JRE_HOME: C:\Apps\jre1.6.0_06
I did a google on the error and I found people saying to place the
tools.jar from the jsk into the lib directory under CATALINA_HOME. But
the examples still don't work. What step could I be missing? Your help is greatly
appreciated.

I just updated the directories of the variables to reflect the current status of my system.What is wrong is that you are using an "old" jsp tutorial :-)
Since Java 1.4, JSPs have been unable to access classes in the "default" package.
What you need to do:
Put the java class ch06_01 in a package.
Steps to do this
- Edit ch06_01 and add the following to the very top of the file (without the quotes): "package mypackage;"
- create a folder "mypackage"
- move ch06_01.java into that folder
- compile that class (now in the mypackage package)
- place ch06_01.class under C:\Apps\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\webapps\ch06\WEB-INF\classes\mypackage
In your jsp:
<%@ page import="mypackage.ch06_01" %>
I would suggest using a more up-to-date tutorial that uses JSTL.
Take a look at this [Apache Tomcat tutorial|http://www.coreservlets.com/Apache-Tomcat-Tutorial/index.html] -

How to access java method in JSP
Hi all,
I need to access java class (abstract portal component) method doContent() in a JSP which is under PORTAL-INF/jsp folder.
I did
<%@ page import = "com.mycompany.Aclass" %>
<%com.mycompany.Aclass a = new com.mycompany.Aclass (); %>
Aclass is coming as autofill/prepopulated with cntrl+space
Till this time, it is working. no errors. But when I do
a.
a. (a dot) no methods are populating (autofill..cntrl+space) or If I forcebly add method a.doContent(req,res)... at runtime its giving error.
It's not only with doContent method... Its with any simple methods in that class or any other class.
(Other than doContent method in the APC java class are prepopulating/autofilling but giving error in runtime)
Can anyone help me... how to access java method in JSP.
I already gone through many SDN forum post... and implemented too---but no use I refered below forum thread

Urgent-how to access custom tag from jsp tag
I have a problem accessing a custom tag from a jsp expression.
Details: I have a custom tag that returns a string variable. I need to access that variable from jsp expression <%%>.
Can any body help me?Tags don't "return" values as in the normal sense.
They can only support TEI (Tag Extra Information) that just stuffs a declared variable into the page's state.
For example, if the tag class had a public method called getValue(), you could do the following:
<xmp:mytag id="foo"/>
<%
out.println("value is " + foo.getValue());
%>
