Access rights issue on windows formatted HDD

i have a windows formatted HDD connectd via USB, and there seems to be an access privelidges problem. i can't create folders on it, and can't move/delete "some" files.
is there any way (without connecting it back to a windows PC) to reset the access rights on the drive/folders/files? there is too much data on it for me to re-format it just now (don't have the space to move all the stuff off it).

Hi Chenks,
this isn't most likely a 'rights' or 'permission' problem rather than that the external HD uses the NTFS file system, which OSX can only read but not write.
Do a right-click on the drive - choose 'Information' to verify if that is the point.
Without a reformatting to a file system that OSX can rad and write, either HFS+ (when using exclusively with Mac) or FAT32 (when using it with Mac and PC), your only choice is to use MacFuse http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/

  • "msvcr100.dll is missing" + "vc++2010 already installed" = "file access right issue" ?

    Hello,
I just have a problem when starting a program in Win8, "msvcr100.dll is missing". This is not a fresh issue so I tried to download and install "VC++ 2010 redistributable package" to solve it. But when I execute the installer,
it told me that I've already installed this (well actually yes, I've installed .NET framework4.5, Visual Studio2010 for C++...).
So I suspect it's a problem of access right in Win8. I've just upgraded from win7 to win8 and I've experienced enough problem about "access right"...
So can anyone tell me what to do? Thanks a lot!
    Léo

    Hi
Firstly, please access to the path to check whether msvcr100.dll is there:C:\Windows\System32
If not, please click the link below to download VC++ 2010:

im not sure they are important or not, just i want to ask...

  • Access rights - heavy issue

I have managed to somehow partly corrupt the access rights on my iMac/SnowLeo system.
Getting a lot of failure messages at the start up and some applications are just not working properly anymore.
iTunes for instance does not longer recognize my iPhone - just doesn't - and again I get some strange messages.
Tried to repair access rights be starting OS x from DVD and used hard disk tools (not sure whether it is called exactly this in English - have a German system installed) and used "repair access rights" on the OS volume - seemed to work because a lot has been repaired but after starting iMAC again - same problem.
Now - what can I do to get this fixed on the access rights? Re-install Mac OS x- what would happen with all applications, e-mails etc?
Any idea - help - would be very much appreciated
    Robert

Thanks - tried it (and seemed to make a lot of sense) but didn't help at the end :-(
    Still same issues
Am not a Mac OS X specialist or UNIX or whatever - actually I am not very familiar with the details of the OS and all its settings etc etc.
However, following some messages, Internet, other sources ---- here's what I have managed to find out:
    1) Mac OS starts up - all fine
    2) after the desktop / dock is visible I get some similar but in general the following message (trying to translate since they are in German on my installation)
"insecure start objects disabled" - ../Library/StartUpItems/Executor" has not be started since the object does not have the correct security settings
    .. I usually get about 10 of them with different "names"(objects) - e.g. "/Executor","/EyeConnect" etc etc.
Now - this all happens on my iMac; I also have a similar configured MacBook and just checked the security setting for exactly these objects on it - the difference is in "share and access rights" on the MacBook has "System" read and write and all others only read - funnily enough - I can not find "System" within "Share and Access rights" on the iMac!!!!
So - next idea: let's add "System" as a user to these folders/shares with "Share and Access rights" - can find a user named "System".
Uh - it seems I have managed to "kill" something on my iMac ..... just don't know how (but that's not so important) and just don't know how to repair - re-installation of Mac OS X on iMac didn't make a lot of changes.
    Help appreciated!!!

  • SMB shares on Windows, access from i5/OS (OS/400), access rights

We are running SAP R/3 on i5/OS.
We would like to access, from SAP, files on a Windows server, through SMB (Windows file sharing).
    In other words:
The SMB server is the Windows machine.
The SMB client is the i5/OS machine.
This is different from the situation with a Windows application server and an i5/OS database server.
We have some problems with the access rights.
We manage to give access to user PRDOFR, but that does not help for accesses from the SAPsystem, because the SAPsystem runs under user-ID PRD02.
    How can we solve this?
If we cannot solve this, we may have to consider NFS: an NFS client on i5/OS and an NFS server on Windows (but NFS is "foreign" to both platforms).

    Hi Erick,
... then you should tell us this point ... (or might want to read the post steps in the inst docu ...)
up to 6.40 this password is always :sapnnpwd   (where "nn" is the instance number)
as of 7.0 SR1 with the master password, it should be the master password, that you selected during the installation. You can test this with logging on with this user. You might be kicked out immediately but this is different to the message: password wrong ...

  • Permissions Issue; cant access a partitioned part of my HDD or my iDisk

I've been having a few issues with permissions sharing files between my Mac Book and iMac, I recently reset the permissions to read/write for myself including all sub-folders on my HDD. Having done this I now cannot access a partitioned part of my HDD or my iDisk!
When I try I get a "Folder XXX can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents"
When I go to "get info" and look at the permissions they all read "custom". When I change them to read/write they go back to custom. I've tried repairing permissions in Disk Utility, booted from the instillation DVD and tried the Disk Utility again, also the Reset Passwords option but still no access!
    Can anyone help?

It would seem you've really gotten the permissions messed up. Here's a rather involved process for getting all the permissions reset for the entire HDD hierarchy.
Startup into Single User Mode: How to Startup into Single User Mode. When startup finishes you should have a black screen with white type ending with a prompt. Enter these commands and press RETURN after each one:
    mount -uw /
    chown root:admin /
    chmod 1775 /
    reboot
After rebooting open the Terminal application to set the following directory permissions. You can paste these lines or enter by hand, but be careful to enter them correctly.
    sudo su
Password: [Enter your admin password when prompted.]
    chown root:admin /Applications
    chmod 0775 /Applications
    chown root:admin /Library
    chmod 1775 /Library
    chown root:admin /System
    chmod 0775 /System
    chown root:admin /Users
    chmod 0775 /Users
    chmod -R -N /Applications
    chown -R :admin /Applications/*
    chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
    Now restart the computer.

  • Problems transferring photos from a Windows formatted iPod Photo to new G5

    Hi all,
I have recently come back from an overseas trip where I stored many many photos on an iPod Photo, using a PC with Windows XP. Now that PC is stuck in the repair shop - most likely not worth saving - and I have bought myself a G5 with OS X and iLife.
Basically iTunes can recognise the number of photos on the iPod, however I cannot view them when I open the Photos folder when in the disk drive. Two folders come up: 'Photo Database' and 'Thumbs'. (I hope I haven't lost the HI RES photos!)
I know there was one post that mentioned creating an empty folder then sync it using iTunes in order to transfer the photos from the ipod- I'm just a bit weary of losing all the photos seeing a warning message displays a similar note.
I thought Mac computers can recognise Windows formatted devices/docs. May it be that the iPod needs to be updated?
I'm calling out to all Mac-savvy users out there who may be generous enough with their time to solve this annoying issue.
    Cheers.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

same thing happened to me. I purchased iPod Access from the internet (for about $15). This program will let you transfer your music and playlists from your iPod to your library

  • Windows 8.1 RDP Issues with Windows Server 2008 Standard.

I have an issue maintaining an RDP connection from 64-bit windows 8.1 (standard and pro) to 32-bit Windows Server 2008 Standard.  Initial connection is normal, and as long as I am constantly typing on the link, for the most part it stays up. However
if I do not keep typing, or go to another desktop program for a few minutes, and then go back, the following happens:
If I am typing into notepad (or some screen that does not require windows to be refreshed) I can continue to do so, so the connection has not been lost, however if I try to do something that requires more extensive exchange of information (like file
    - open, or even trying to pull up the start menu), the connection pauses with about half the screen refreshed, sometimes after about 30 seconds a bit more of the screen fills out, but otherwise the connection is not responsive. Then after about 2 minutes,
RDP reconnects, at which point I am back to "normal".  I have conducted some tests and made inquiries of others attempting to connect to the server.
    1) I can connect to other Windows (servers 2008 R2 and 2012)  with no connection issues from this PC
    2) I can connect to the 32-bit server with no issues using Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows 7 from the same location as the WIndows 8.1 PC
    3) When I do a network speed test while having these issues I see full download and upload speeds, so I am not experiencing intermittent internet issues.
    4) No-one else from other locations (not of course using Windows 8.1) has any issues using RDP to the 32-bit Windows Server Standard.
These various tests seem to eliminate my network connection, and other operating systems, from the equation, and point to RDP issues on windows 8.1 connecting to the older OS.  I noticed in the September updates, a case 2989039 which seemed to point
to similar issues when using UDP through Remote Desktop Gateway.  That update is on my machine, and my connection has the setting Automatically detect RD Access Gateway server settings.
    Any thoughts anyone?

    Hi  RonaldRenaud,
If my understanding is right, this RDP issue only occur in the connection between Windows 8.1 and Server 2008.
Please check if you have installed the update kb2984006.
To resolve this issue caused by update 2989039, install update rollup 2984006. For more information, please refer to the following KB.

  • How do i change the access rights for every file in every sub-folder?

I have an external drive that was shared between my PC and my iMac (running Snow Leopard 10.6.5).
Some of the files created by my PC have the following access rights (privileges):
    Me: Custom
    staff: Custom
    everyone: Custom
I want every file to have the following access rights (privileges):
    Me: Read & Write
    staff: Read & Write
    everyone: Read & Write
I presume that I need to go into the terminal and run some command line program, but I have no idea what program or what options (or even where to look for such a program). Can someone tell me how to do this, so that every file in every sub-folder has the same access rights?

Well, that's different. Most people do not install anything on their PC to read an HFS+ disk, so I assumed it was formatted for the PC. [See my above post|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12843313#12843313].
Note that it is the same as what you asked about, except with numbers instead of the letter equivalents.
Posix permissions are for User;Group;Other (ugo) and each one can have read/write/execute permissions. Read = 4, Write = 2, and Execute = 1. So, for rwx you set 421=7.
I try to make it safe by not typing in the file path. If you do what you posted, you will change the startup volume's permissions. The path to your external is /Volumes/ext hd mount point. If you start typing the path and accidentally hit return before finishing the full path, you could fubar something you didn't want to. So, I type the command, leave a space, and then drag the target to the Terminal window.
You might also consider the GUI based permission changing program, [BatChmod|http://www.macchampion.com/arbysoft/BatchMod/Welcome.html].

  • Weird CS4 hanging issue in windows Vista when opening files with PS already loaded

I just installed the demo. I have a dual monitor setup running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 with 8GB ram ...
It appears I have both the 32bit and 64bit versions of PS CS4 installed. If I open either of these apps, then choose say a jpg on my desktop, right-click in windows, choose, 'open with' and select 'Adobe Photoshop CS4', then PS hangs - period. After a while, clicking the title bar of the app (which is a kind of menu bar in this version) causes it to return to the old look windows title bar where it shows my image name and the zoom etc, but with the usual (Not Responding) at the end of the title bar text!
It does this no matter which version (32 or 64bit) is presently loaded. It also does it if I have CS4 loaded and I select 'Edit with Photoshop' in Lightroom 2.1 (my main app which is configured to output files in 16bit PSD format).
Another weird quirk I found in CS4 - if I select 'Help', 'System Info' it displays the info on my second monitor, not my first! I figure this by the screen res shown as my second monitor (monitor 3 in Vista) is only running 1280x1024. Not sure if this has an effect on which monitor profile is used by PS - I would hope not as my 1st monitor is my calibrated one!
    Thanks, Paul

Freeagent - I just did some more testing and figured the issue I think! I had selected 'Enable OpenGL Drawing' in Performance preferences and even though I have the very latest nVidia driver (downloaded today) this still causes this issue!
One issue I have noticed though since figuring how to fix this - I have 2 monitors and on the left one I have the panels un-docked and laid out neatly on the desktop. I then have the main PS window with it's height shrunk as slim as possible and filling the top width of my 2nd monitor. In CS3 when I open an image, it generally remembers where the last one opened and uses the same place - this includes if I had the image in its own window on my main monitor. In CS4, it seems to want to open them in tabbed dialogs within the PS main window and for some reason they are on minimal magnification, so I need to drag the tab over to my main monitor every time and zoom in to get a decent size displayed.
Is there anywhere to configure where you want it to open images?
    Thanks, Paul

  • Weird issue with Windows Server 2008 R2 Print Server

I have an issue with Windows 2008 R2 (VMWare Hosted) running Windows Print Server.
Prior to a small network change, the print server was working well, hosting about 80 different networked printers from various vendors.
We made a change (that we ended up rolling back) to the Client's DHCP Scope OPT 006 (DNS Servers). The DNS servers never quite worked right and broke AD authentication to different servers, and was just a mess.
After rolling back we are not able to keep the printers online. If we ping them from the print server, the printer(s) never wake up, when a print job is submitted. If we ping them from one of the access switches, they work fine (until they fall back asleep),
to prevent this, if we start a ping on the server AFTER waking them up from the Switch Ping, they stay online and no problems.
If we stop the ping, they fall back asleep at some point, and again, won't wake up without intervention/switch side ping.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any tips on how I could possibly resolve it?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
According to your description, the issue seems to be that the printers can't keep online. Sounds like a power managerment issue. Why these printers fall into sleep? Have you consulted this issue with the manufacturer of these printers? Do these printers
fall into sleep if them lose the contact with printer server? Have you tried to reset the printers?
    >>We made a change (that we ended up rolling back) to the Client's DHCP Scope OPT 006 (DNS Servers).
DNS client will cache the recently queried records. If the DNS server has replied with a wrong records, communication issues will occur. To clear the DNS cache on a Windows device, please run the command below:
    ipconfig /flushdns
    Best Regards.

  • Itunes issues with windows 8... laggy?

anyone one else having abit a of laggy issue with playing music on windows 8?
i just upgraded to windows 8 con. preview, and its great and fast.
i use to have windows 7 and itunes never skipped a beat.
i have a sony viao with an upgraded ram and ssd hdd.
    and its pretty fast.
so i dont think its my computer and windows 8 seems to be fine.
anyone else having this issue? but it only happens now and then.......
    NOTE:
i have my music all copied to my sdd hdd aswell
and thats all thats really on there as i have ext. hdd's.
i have a average size library in itunes with around about 50gb of music.

I had the same issues with Windows 8 Consumer Preview. I installed on a fresh system and still had issues.
I experienced extreme lag, with pretty much everything, and iTunes freezing once I attempted to change the currently playing song.
I had a mess with compatibility mode and found out that running it in with Compatibility mode enabled for Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and as an administrator fixed it. It works now, however, there is a popup message that comes up on launch telling you to change the compatibility settings, but pressing "OK" makes it go away.
    How?
Open Windows Explorer, and navigate to: "C:\Program Files\iTunes" (For 32bit) or "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes" (For 64bit), unless you changed it.
Right-click on "iTunes.exe", select "Properties" from the context menu, and click the "Compatibility" tab.
Under "Compatibility mode" check off "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)" from the drop down menu.
Further down under "Privilege level" check off "Run this program as an administrator".
    Click "Apply" and "OK".
Should fix any issues, I have my default iTunes Media Folder Location within an external hard drive so unplugging all of my USB's wasn't an option.
    Hope I helped!

  • Suggestions for a Non Advanced Format HDD for Satellite L450-136

I need to replace the HDD on my Satellite L450-136 and am looking for one compatible with it. Straightforward you may think, but I have found out the hard way that the Advanced Format HDDs that are on the market today do not work with the L450's Recovery Disk (because the version of windows 7 on the disk does not have SP1 applied). I have been told by Toshiba that there is no way round this apart from purchasing a "compatible" HDD.
However, I am having trouble sourcing a replacement HDD that does not have AF. So does anyone have any suggestions for a reliable replacement HDD but *without* AF?

Thanks for your reply. Yes you are right, the HDDs on the market now with Advanced Formatting are compatible with the notebook. I tested this by downloading an ISO of Windows 7 with SP1 applied, and this installed and ran without any probs. The only fly in the ointment was that I would need to buy a new license to use this on a permanent basis as the Toshiba Prod Id wasn't accepted by Microsoft as valid. Ubuntu also installed and ran ok although I didn't really want to go down this route.
When you say about formatting the HD on another PC, I have to admit I didn't try this. However, I may be wrong in this, but wouldn't the successful installation of either Ubuntu or Windows 7 with SP1 have formatted the disk? If this is the case, then using Recovery Disk after this still didn't work and got the same error.

  • Windows External HDD data to a MacBook Pro...

I have a 120 GB windows formatted External HDD with tons of stuff I want to access and transfer to my macbook. Can I get to the data with a cable or program without burning it to 100 DVD-R's?
Most of it is iTunes. I understand I can get a program from ipodsoft.com to transfer music from the ipod to the macbook.
    Thanks for any help...

Just hook the external hdd up to your MacBook Pro.
OS X will mount it as a usable volume when you connect it.
Nothing special you need to do.
