Access SQL Query - INSERT Help!

Hi,
I'm trying to do a simple INSERT statement in an Access Database.
My code is:
public SQLConnect() {
          // SQL Connection Part
          try {
               Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver"); //have tried with .newInstance() as well but same effect
               String filename = "C://Maxi//maxi.mdb";
               String database = "jdbc:odbc:Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ=";
               database += filename.trim() + ";DriverID=22;READONLY=true}";
               Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(database, "", "");
               PreparedStatement ps = con.prepareStatement("INSERT INTO Student (ID,FamilyName,FirstName,OtherName,Email,Phone,DOB,CourseType,Sex) VALUES (?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?)");
               ps.setString(1, "071111114");
               ps.setString(2, "Crane");
               ps.setString(3, "Frasier");
               ps.setString(4, "Winslow");
               ps.setString(5, "[email protected]");
               ps.setString(6, "012345");
               ps.setString(7, "01/01/2008");
               ps.setString(8, "M");
               ps.setString(9, "M");
               ps.executeUpdate();
               //Statement t = con.createStatement();
               //t.execute("SELECT * FROM STUDENT");
               //con.close();
          } catch (Exception e) {
               System.out.println("ERROR!");
               e.printStackTrace();
     }I am experiencing weird behaviour with the INSERT command being carried out successfully.
The code as above will not INSERT the data in the PreparedStatement.
However if I use any of the two methods in the commented out code, the INSERT will be carried out. Why is this happening? Surely it should just INSERT the data with the line ps.executeUpdate() without having to wait for any further commands.
The reason I don't want to close the connection is that I am attempting to make a class so I can do simple INSERT, UPDATE and SELECT queries without having to go through the initial connection steps each time. I have read that opening and closing a connection for each query takes a lot of overhead, but it seems to be the only way this will properly execute.
I am welcome to any suggestions.
Cheers.

Ha it always seems to fix itself as soon as you post about it.
It would look as if when creating the connection if you do:
con.setAutoCommit(false);and then after the ps.executeUpdate(); if you commit with:
con.commit();this actually works.
If you omit to set the AutoCommit then this does not work. I am still stumped as to why I have to do this. Any explanations?

    Hi,
    I am trying to create cluster bar chart and am stumped with this sql query.Any help is appreciated.
    Here is my table
    city     region      issue     value
    c1     north     i1     y
    c1     north     i2     y
    c2     north     i1     n
    c2     north     i2     y
    c3     south     i1     y
    c3     south     i2     n
    c4     east     i1     n
    c4     east     i2     n
    The bar chart will have 3 series, north south and east.
    And labels will be i1 and i2. value will be number of times this issue was encountered(y) in this region.
    How can I get something like this from the above table-
    region     issue     count(yes)
    north     i1     1
    north     i2     2
    south     i1     1
    south     i2     0

  • Access SQL Query Problem - Pls help

    Hi,
    I'm connecting to an Access database and have a query which looks somehting like this:
    SELECT Accept.ACCEPT_NO,
         Accept.CURRENCY,
         Accept.INT_RATE,
         Accept.F_AMOUNT,
         Accept.DEALER,
         Accept.MATURITY,
         Accept.START_DATE,
         Accept.DEAL_DATE,
         Accept.DEALTICKET,
         Accept.BANK_NAME,
         Accept.CALC_DAYS,
         "2001/11/22" AS CurrentDate
    FROM Accept;
    It works fine without the line with CurrentDate so i'm sure something's wrong there. What i want to do is set CurrentDate as a constant ("2001/11/22") i dont have any experience with Access so any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanx in advance.

    I was able to successfully query an access 97 database using the following SQL:
    String sql = "SELECT emp.emp_fname, emp.emp_lname, '2001/11/22' AS CurrentDate FROM emp";don't know why your's wouldn't work. Was there a SQLException? Or are you trying to get it to work using the Access SQL editor?

    Neethu Mohan

    Hi Neethu,
    It gives you an overwiew of blocking Oracle sessions.
    1. In general, the SQL checks Oracle sessions (SID's) that were requirering a DML lock ('TM') and now holding row locks (TX)  to prevent destructive interference of simultaneous conflicting DML or DDL operations. DML statements automatically acquire both table-level locks and row-level locks ('TX')  => holders
    It joins these with the sessions that are waiting of releasing the lock by the holders  => waiters.
    2. it retrieves the detail information wich  Oracle process , the object (table) , it's row , block  and file
    are affected by the locks.
    3. Normally, the locks are only hold for a short period of time. If you have blocking sessions it may be of a log running task (i.e. mass data update of a table) ; but it could also be a application bug due to improper handling of concurrent updates of the same object.
    4. Tuning
    V$tables are expensive to query: Why?
    v$ tables are generally Oracle memory structures.
    v$ tables are not read consistent.
    v$ tables require latches to access -- cannot modify and read memory at the same
    time.
    heavy access to v$ tables like this may cause some serious heavy duty contention.
    Especially if you self join V$lock several times.
    So the best would be to save the contents of V$LOCK in some table:
    Create table mylocks as select * from v$lock;
    Use that table for self-joining and joins to the other tables.
    You can also CTAS the other v$ tables to bypass the performance bottleneck while retrieving
    v$ directly.
    You can empty or drop the created tables any time for new data.
    Because you want to investigate only lock hold for a longert time  to copy the v$ memory structures into
    physical tables is not a disadvantage. You certainly will wait longer on finishing your query
    instead of copy them into the tables.
    Hope this helped
    yk

  • Rewriting a Access SQL-query to get it working in JDBC?!

    The following select-query works for me in Access:
    SELECT * FROM aWoord WHERE Woord LIKE 'a[!f,p][!n][a-z][a-z][a-z]';
    aWoord contains 6-letter woords starting with a.
    But when I use this in
    Driver driver = new JdbcOdbcDriver();
    Properties info = new Properties();
    String url = "jdbc:odbc:" + dsn;
    con = driver.connect(url,info);
    if (con != null)
    stmt = con.createStatement();
    And then
    ResultSet res = stmt.executeQuery(sql);
    In which sql is the above Access SQL string. It doesn't produce any results! I know the problem lies in the "Like-part" can't I use [!p] in JDBC?! Or should I use a different notation?
    Stijn.

    My connection is ok, because I can get results if I use a "simple statement" like:
    "SELECT * FROM aWoord;"
    This gives me the total content of the table aWoord.
    But when I use the statement mentioned above it doesn't work.
    This also doesn't work:
    "SELECT * FROM aWoord WHERE Woord LIKE '*';"
    I have to use the following:
    "SELECT * FROM aWoord WHERE Woord LIKE '%';"
    I know * is a wildcard for DAO and % for ADO but the database is an Access database thus DAO or not!?

  • Passing parameter to a SQL query - Please help

    Hi All,
    I am new to JDBC. I have been trying to pass an external variable to an SQL Query.
    The query is
    String username1="le";
    PreparedStatement pstmt = null;
    pstmt = c.prepareStatement("select * from users where USER_NAME like '%?%'");
         pstmt.setString(1, username1);
         pstmt.executeQuery();
         ResultSet rs = pstmt.getResultSet();
    I am trying to retrieve values from the users table where the USER_NAME column value that is a String contains the supplied value username1.
    I am using the question mark (?) character to pass the value from the variable username1. I am also using the '%' substitution character which matches for any number of characters. So, the above query should retrieve rows where the USER_NAME is something like "charles","leander","Elena" etc.( that contains "le")
    I am getting the error:
    SQLException: java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01006: bind variable does not exist
    I changed the query to
    PreparedStatement pstmt = null;
    pstmt = c.prepareStatement("select * from users where USER_NAME like '% " + username1 + "%'");
         //pstmt.setString(1, username1);
         pstmt.executeQuery();
    This time , it is not giving the error and retrieving properly.
    But I want to use the original query and use the "pstmt.setString(1, username1); " . Is there any way of achieving this?
    Please help.
    Cheers,
    charles_am

    hi,
    try this...
    String username1="%le%";
    pstmt = c.prepareStatement("select * from users where USER_NAME like ?")
    pstmt.setString(1,username1);
    cheers,

  • SQL query performace help

    Hi,
    I have a question about the performace of this SQL query. I have to display only 8 rows from this query. How is this query will be executed? What happens if the inside query returns more than 500 rows? Will it slow down?
    SELECT * FROM (SELECT prod_date, create_date, prod_name, priority, status FROM CUST_PROD
    WHERE cust_id = 100 and Status in(1, 5) order by priority, prod_name ) WHERE ROWNUM < = 8
    Thank you..

    Its hard to tell what effect more data will have on a query until it happens. As BluShadow pointed out you're not talking about huge amounts of data; with luck the numbers you mentioned will not make any difference.
    It looks like you're using the inline view to a top N query. You could look into using the RANK() function to do something similar.

  • SQL Query / Insert Builder

    I am making a Java program to access / update a database via JDBC. I need to make string queries like this:
    db.update(
    "INSERT INTO sample_table(str_col,num_col) VALUES('Ford', 100)");
    The query above is simple, but you can see how assembling the query made out of constant string fragments and variables that my program updates can become more complicated. For example, I need to also store a date. Is there a utility similar to StringBuilder for building strings that can make this process easier? I am looking for a function specifically to build SQL queries. It might look something like this:
    querybuilder.insert(<table>, <name1>, <value1>, <name2>, <value2>....<nameN>, <valueN>);
    Where table is the name of the table that I would be inserting into and name is the column name of the table, value would be the value to be stored under the column name. Are there SQL functions for this?

    I made such a library myself (called it an SQLFormatter), but haven't put it on the web because I've not thought there would be a general interest in it. Essentially, I can create an Insert Into statement like this:
    SQLFormatter formatter = SQLFormatter.get(myStatement);
    String sql = formatter.createInsertIntoStatement("MyTable", new String[] {"Field1", "Field2", "Field3"}, new Object[] {value1, value2, value3});I'd be happy to share it with you, but I'm not sure about how I can make it reach you. Do I need to post it on a web site?

    In my database i have added comments to the colums. I would like to use this comments in the help text of the items of my application. I have the query but when I use it in the help text attribute it does not execute the query, it presents the query.
    Any ideas?

    It is probably too late now, but note that if you create your application using the Create Application Wizard and Application Models, based on User Interface Defaults created in the SQL Workshop, any column comments will automatically become application help text.

    Table1
    QTE_ID     SEQ_NO
    1435177     2
    1435177     5
    1435177     7
    1435177     8
    1435177     12
    1435177     14
    Table2
    QTE_ID     SEQ_NO     CMMT_CURR_AMT
    1435177     1     98500
    1435177     2     98500
    1435177     3     0
    1435177     4     98500
    1435177     5     98500
    1435177     7     98500
    1435177     8     98500
    1435177     11     59300
    1435177     12     59300
    1435177     14     59300
    The result should be
    QTE_ID     SEQ_NO     CMMT_CURR_AMT
    1435177     2     0 (where 0 = cmmt_curr_amt of seq 2 - cmmt_curr_amt of seq 1 from table 2)
    1435177     5     0 (where 0 = cmmt_curr_amt of seq 5 - cmmt_curr_amt of seq 4 from table 2)
    1435177     7     0 (where 0 = cmmt_curr_amt of seq 7 - cmmt_curr_amt of seq 5 from table 2)
    1435177     8     0 (where 0 = cmmt_curr_amt of seq 8 - cmmt_curr_amt of seq 7 from table 2)
    1435177     12     0 (where 0 = cmmt_curr_amt of seq 12 - cmmt_curr_amt of seq 11 from table 2)
    1435177     14     0 (where 0 = cmmt_curr_amt of seq 14 - cmmt_curr_amt of seq 12 from table 2)
    I have to get the difference of cmmt_curr_amt from the table2 from seq 14 to seq 12 for seq14 in table 1.
    Please help me in writing the query.
    Thanks in advance.
    Srinivas

  • During SQL query inserting a record - will it appear on the query result

    Hi,
    Oracle 10g SELECT-query executes ca 10 seconds and contains Joins over multiple tables in on database conenction.
    On execution 3rd second a new record is inserted in another database connection and commited to the database, the 3rd query satisgy the SELECT-Query fileters.
    Wil lthe inserted record on 3rd second appear on the query results?
    Thx.

    Thx.In general Keith is right and a select will not see changes done and committed in a different session, that happend during the select. This is called READ CONSISTENCY. THis means a select will see the data from the exact time when it was called.
    However with database links in place read consistency can not be fully garanteed.
    See this explaination and solution from the 10g docs : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/ds_txnman.htm#i1008473
