Accessing a particular file generates a kernal panic
Hi all,
There's a file on my hard drive that systematically generates a kernel panic whenever I try to access it. In particular, I cannot delete it. I can send it to the Trash, but then trying to empty the Trash generates a kernel panic.
Here what panic.log says:
Sat Nov 3 13:59:25 2007
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0030F850): hfs_removefile: error 335395932 from cat_rename(temp3596072 ) cp 0x0

Thanks in advance for your hints.
Thanks for your hints! Let me give you some more details on the situation...
I have a folder that contains 2 "ghost" files. They appear in the Finder when I open the folder, but their icons are missing, and all their information is incorrect (like, a modification date of 1904). When I click on one to select it, it disappears. It still shows up in the Terminal, though. If I try to delete the folder (either via the Trash or using rm), I get a kernel panick.
I repaired permissions and no problem was found.
When I tried to overwrite one of the files with another file of the same name, it first asked me to confirm, saying that there already existed a file with the same name that was going to be overwritten, so I confirmed, and then I got the following error message:
The operation cannot be completed because an item with the name "" already exists.
I assume the same of the file is supposed to appear within the quotes, but in the error message there is nothing between the quotes.
I haven't tried to scan it for viruses yet.
Thanks again

I installed iCloud drive in my mac and saved a .xls file to be viewed and used with my iPad and iPhone. Though these devices are upgraded to IOs8 and Icloud drive is 'on' in these devices, I am unable to access this particular file in iPad or iPhone. Request help on how to open, view and amend files thru iPhone or Ipad.

My laptop fell off the coffee table, and slammed shut. It then produced a kernal Panic to restart, which I did. It the brings up the user icons, mine and guest, but will not go past the grey screen with spinner on mine. It does let me into the basic safari setting I had on the guest user, AND when i press option on start up, will let me access the windows partition I have set up and all works fine.
I have tried safe mode, safe mode with display screen and the NVRAM/PRAM restarts, and nothing!
I have let the battery run completely, restarted, filled up the battery before starting.... everything.... anybody have any ideas? else I am going to have to visit a genius! grrrrrrr....
Thanks in advance!

Looks like that is what you are going to end up doing. No telling what was damaged internally. -
Organizing your files while having a Kernal Panic
Right now my iBook has a Kernal Panic. My mom attempted to install the OS software keeping the data but it woudlnt' work so I have to do a clean install.
So I need to back it up.
But I can't get to finder without it freezing.
I attempted to use Disk Warrior witht he preview option and that partly worked but I can't transfer any files from a backup drive to my harddrive, but I can copy files from my hardrive to the backup drive.
So strange.
Anyways does anyone know of something that allows you to organizine, and work somewhat like finder but it lets you move, organize, and do certain things so that I can backup my data so my mom can do a reinstallMidnight Pharaoh,
If you are still dealing with this problem, here is a thought:
If you have another Mac, a firewire cable and can boot the iBook in target disk mode, then you might be able to drag files from the iBook to the other Mac (for backup purposes). However, given that the iBook is having problems, we cannot really know if this will work unless you try. There are instructions at: How to use FireWire target disk mode. -
Kernal Panic on 1.67 PB
I experienced the first kernal panic on my 1.67GHz PB this morning. I was using the computer and the big power sign with multi language warning suddently showed up.
I restarted the computer, after the apple logo/spinner went away the power sign/error message appeared again. So I shut down/restarted again and it was gone.
This is a picture of what I referring to:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/04/MacOSXkernelpanic.png
So what should I do to avoid this from happening again? This error message is a type of Directory error (think of the directory as a table of contents). Certain characters cannot be used as file names. One example of this would be using a colon in a file name. If this is the source of the error then DU is likely to have fixed it. However, you cannot know this for sure without booting from the install disk and running Repair Disk for a second time. Many times small directory errors can go undetected but compound over time and lead to kernel panics. This is where having access to your panic log will be helpful in troubleshooting.
There also appear to be other, less benign sources of that error message. See, for example, the bottom of this thread:
http://www.fazed.net/forum/view/?id=22304&p=5
The manufacturer of that particular software, Adobe, has acknowledged the source of the directory problem and posted the fix:
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/332657.html
As hardware appears not to be the source of your kernel panics, netwr, then looking to software issues is the next step. The Genius Bar may be able to isolate the culprit through interpreting your panic log, or may suggest an Archive/Restore of your software, or may suggest wiping the drive and reinstalling, in which case you will want to preserve (backup) your important data.
Thanks for keeping our inquiring minds updated.

Thunderbolt Bus:If you boot into Safe Mode and operate do you still get kernel panics?
In particular you need to remove the software that installed the following extensions:
org.fuse4x.kext.fuse4x 0.9.2
com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver 1.0.3
com.squirrels.driver.AirParrotSpeakers 1.8
Booting into safe mode should prevent them from loading, but it would be preferable to uninstall the software completely.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:
1. AppZapper 2.0.1
2. AppDelete 3.2.6
3. Automaton 1.50
4. Hazel
5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
6. CleanApp
7. iTrash 1.8.2
8. Amnesia
9. Uninstaller 1.15.1
10. Spring Cleaning 11.0.1

First back up with TM....kernal panic
last night, i installed a laCie 500GB USB2 Ext. HD to use with time machine. i reformated the drive and went to bed. this morning i woke to my fans running to beat the band and the command lines of a kernal panic.
i restarted and then restarted time machine. it had to bake a 214gb back up and had about 30gb left.....don't know why so big, the files it was copying is only 140gb.....at any rate...when i tried to get it to finish the back up, it only moved an additional 30mb of data then seemed to stop.
I trashed the entire back up and started over. it has been running all day. When i stopped for dinner, it had 181gb done of the 215....then had another kernal panic. i restarted again and am back at it only backed up an additional 30mb of data...still has about 34gigs to go.
what am i doing wrong?I think this is it:

My iMac G5 is unpredictably experiencing a kernal panic. I can not resolve the problem. The Apple Genius guys on Chestnut SF tell me it's not a hardware problem, but I'm not sure. I re-installed Leopard. It still happens. Sometimes at login. Sometimes after sleep. Sometimes at random times. It's driving me nuts (particularly since I had a circuit board failure on my other G5 requiring a new purchase 2 months ago). So I'm batting 0 for 2 right now.
Here's the log. Any suggestions?

Regardless, if the Chestnut Geniuses are so confident it isn't a hardware issue, perhaps it's time to give the Stonestown or Union Square Geniuses a try. -
Can anyone decipher the source of kernal panics I'm having from this?
I've had several kernal panics lately. I got on the phone with tech support who merely directed me to reset the PRAM and sent me the email link:
Link: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n106805
Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts
AFTER I specifically stated my kernal panics DID NOT happen on start up. They usually happen when the computer is not being actively used. I walked away and came back to find the latest panic on the screen after hearing the fan going at a furious rate.
Please recommend a course of action! Hardware info is at end of kernal log. Thank you!

Just a couple thoughts -
Continuing Kernal Panic Problem
Since my previous post - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1153209 - I regret that I continue to get the dreaded 'Kernal Panic' and minor HDD corruption.
After taking out the Factory Installed RAM and leaving the new Crucial 512 mb card in seemed to work for a while but the problem persists making the eMac almost unusable.
I wonder if something is loading up with the 'System' on start up and is screwing around with things. I still get the minor disc error and Disk Warrior reports a particular file with strange Chinese looking characters in the name as being damaged beyond repair. Unfortunately DW won't let me copy the report so I may post it here. Something about text encoding.
I would try to find the file and move it elsewhere in case it is a .plist file that gets re-written but it's invisible and in Chinese so I can't just type its name to locate it. I'm not sure if this file is the problem anyway. It may have resulted from the problem, if you get my gist.
The HDD has been checked over numerous times with TechTool Pro 4 and Disk Warrior. The former programme has been used to do a 'surface scan' of the HDD on three occasions and has never found any 'bad blocks' and such. One thing occurs to me now. I need to change the RAM from slot J2 to J1 next. I will try that tomorrow.dreed2 wrote:
Do you get the KP if you start up with nothing connected except for the keyboard and mouse?
Yes. At the moment that is all that is connected.
Thanks for the Language suggestion. I tried this some time ago and almost cocked it up by deleting files I wanted to keep - and vice versa. Misunderstood the instructions and did the opposite of what I needed to do. I managed to stop the programme in time however before the machine became unusable.
If re-installing Tiger (by Archive and install) can replace any English language files that may have been deleted, I will try reinstalling once again. I think I may have already tried doing this, but it won't hurt to have another go. I will switch RAM slots before I try re-installing Tiger again to see if that does anything.
I note that I can 'Safe Boot' ok. -
Kernal Panic after update to 10.4.6/Missing HD Space/Won't Startup from DVD
Sorry to lump three problems together, but they may all be related.
First - I was getting random Kernal Panics while at 10.4.5, so I attempted to update to 10.4.6. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting up. I got a screen full of Kernal Panic info. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.3, and that's where the system stands now. It's running fine.
Second - My computer suddenly announced that the startup drive was out of disk space. I looked and the window said 30g. I closed the window and opened it again only to see it at zero k. I dumped some items to get some disk space, but now I can't get my 30g back.
Third - I want to startup from the Tiger disk like I did when I reinstalled, but it won't startup from the DVD. I'd like to run Disk Repair on the main hard drive. It showed some errors when I ran a Test using the Disk Utility.
I'm hoping this is all related. The computer seems to be running fine, but I can't update or find my missing space. Any advice I can get on these issues would be appreciated. Thanks.
JonIs your computer saving a panic.log after each of the kernel panics? You can see by opening Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and looking for it. I'm not at my Mac now, so I can't tell you under what section to look for that log.
When you try to boot from the CD, are you holding down the 'C' key as the computer reboots? You can also try rebooting with the Option key pressed, which will present you with a list of bootable volumes. It will also give you access to the Apple Hardware Test (if this is the DVD that came with the computer). If you can select the Apple Hardware Test, I'd recommend doing the Extended Test, which will test the hardware, including the RAM.
For the disappearing disk space, you could have some process that is going bezerk and filling up the log files. In any event, to see where you disk space is being used, download and run Omni DiskSweeper. -
Hi everyone
I saw that there was a recent thread on kernel panics, and I have studied it and got about as much info as I could glean from the great links in the thread. Kernel panics are new to me, but I am not new to mac. Here's what's happening with my Mac Book Pro.
May 5 - in a meeting - online wirelessly using Firefox latest version, Thunderbird is open as well. - closed MBP - opened a little later and got the message that the macperson sitting next to me recognized as a KP. I restarted - loud beep and restarted ok. I put it out of my mind. Been working fine
May 19 - this morning - same scenario as above except this time I was plugged in for power - waking up from closed and sleep I got another Kernal Panic. I checked panic.log and saw it had happened on April 12 as well, but never before. While I cannot remember what happened on April 12, I do recall that last month I did have a crash when waking from sleep, but did not see an error message.
-I have no usb or firewire devises hooked up, but I am connected to my Epson printer wirelessly through printer sharing and my isight G5.
-I have checked all the crash logs and they are difficult to decipher, but I did not see anything that happened the same on all those days besides the crashes.
-I checked my installer logs and I have not installed anything accept Apple Updates anytime recently. -I verified my disk - all ok.
-I repaired permissions.
-I downloaded and ran Memtest - it says all is well with my memory (1gb, allthough it said it was testing 443mb). It is not new, but what came with the MBP.
Is there anyone who has heard of Kernel Panics happening during waking from sleep in particular? Can it be that just repairing permissions will have fixed it?
Thanks for reading through all this and let me know what info I can give to help. BTW - here is the report from the panic.log. All three are the same except for the dates:

Thanks everyone.
sarahjI see that those are numbers from the panic.log text above, but I do not know what it is that you want - system.log? That is a whole lot of text. From when to when? As I see it looking through the text, the activity was all background stuff. Here it is:

Brand new MBP Retina constant kernal panics
I have a new MBP Retina with Mavericks 10.9.4 installed. I have received constant kernal panics since a few days into it. It seemed as though they were being cause by the io/logic boards, but those have both been replaced now. OS has been reinstalled multiple times to no avail. BSD and kernals blamed are all over the place (Dock, WindowsServer, mds; filesystems, AppleSMBusController, IOAcceleratorFamily)
The latest kernal panic is as follows:

I've got many more where that came from. I just don't want to post a wall of text.An update on my situation.
I had my macbook pro replaced with a brand new one by Apple, which was brilliant customer service.
Before giving back the old macbook, I decided to copy all my essential documents over to a usb stick. I also formatted my time machine external drive so it was blank.
Rather than restore this new macbook using my time machine backup, I set it up as a new machine and copied just my documents from my usb stick. I then proceeded to carry out fresh installs of software I regularly use but nothing non-essential (namely Spotify, Firefox, Chrome, xCode, Adobe CS5, Squidman, MAMP and Office 2011).
For three days everything worked beautifully - until last night when I had my first kernel panic on this machine. Nothing was running apart from firefox when this panic occured. The report is below and states the process which was running was 'plugin-container' which is part of firefox.
Below is the log output:
Sat Aug 30 01:51:53 2014

I'm running the latest OS X Mavericks - all updated to date.
I've tested the thunderbolt display with a friends MacBook Air and I see no problems there.
Any clues what is going on? Or it this latest Kernel Panic just a coincidence compared to my previous macbook?
Thanks in advance! -
[Solved]Kernal Panic after installation
I had debian...
I installed arch...
When I rebooted, grub list didnt show debian...
So, I went to grub4dos from lucid puppy...
Then I can boot Debian...
But when I try arch linux...
I get sort of an error like...
Kernal Panic - not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on......

Kernal panic error - Etrecheck report inside
So I just tried upgrading to Mountain Lion from Lion and got the dreaded kernal errors upon reboot. From reading these posts, it seems 3rd party software may be the problem.
I ran Etrecheck, but I can't decipher it enough to figure out where my problem lies.
Can someone walk me through the problem here, and how to rid it?
Problem description:
Upgraded to OSX 10.8, got kernal panic errors
