Accessing enum members from enum Class literal

I'm using enums to provide a configuration framework. They work well, but I've hit a problem. This may be a bad use-case or just end up as a limitation of the enum support.
In a nutshell I want to return the enum container type from a method and allow clients to access the members of that enum directly. For example:
interface Widget
  Class<?> getColours();
class MyWidget implements Widget
  enum COLOUR { RED, GREEN, BLUE };
  public Class<COLOUR> getColours() { return COLOUR.class;}
// client
MyWidget w = new MyWidget();
w.setColour( w.getColours().BLUE ); // compile error!Of course, this gives a compile error as getColours() returned a class literal which doesn't have the field BLUE. However it seems like there should be a way to do this as all the information is there (the class literal has the necessary type information and can see the type is an enum). I've see Class#getEnumConstants() but this defeats the point by using an id or key to the enum rather than the enum member. Perhaps something like Class#asEnum():
COLOUR b = w.getColours().asEnum().BLUE;I currently solve this by using naming conventions. Each widget implementer is required (by the framework) to provide an enum with the name 'COLOUR' that provides the colours it supports. However I'd prefer to have this on the interface to remind implementers to expose these configuration options.
One other workaround is to create a custom container that holds a reference to each enum field ... but its not pretty:
class MyWidget implements Widget
  public static class COLOURS
    private static COLOURS instance = new COLOURS();
    private COLOURS() {}
    public COLOUR RED = COLOR.RED;
    public COLOUR BLUE = COLOR.BLUE;
    public COLOUR GREE = COLOR.GREEN;
    enum COLOUR { RED, GREEN, BLUE };
  public COLOURS getColours() { return COLOURS.instance;}
// client
MyWidget w = new MyWidget();
w.setColour( w.getColours().BLUE ); // OKHas anyone hit this before and found a better solution? Is there something I've missed? If not does this seem like a reasonable request for improvement?

I suspect you're better off using the static values() or valueOf(String) methods on the enum you create.
So you could do
Colour c = Colour.valueOf("BLUE");or even
Color particularColour = null;
for(Colour c : Colour.values()) {
    if (c.isApplicable(someCriteria)) {
        particularColour = c;
        break;
}assuming you created a method isApplicable in the Colour enum. All I'm trying to suggest in this latter example is that selection of an enum value might be better delegated to the enum than performed by the caller.

  • How to access form objects from different class?

    Hello, I am new to java and i started with netbeans 6 beta,
    when i create java form application from template i get 2 classes one ends with APP and one with VIEW,
    i put for example jTextField1 with the form designer to the form and i can manipulate it's contents easily from within it's class (let's say it is MyAppView).
    Question>
    How can i access jTextField1 value from different class that i created in the same project?
    please help. and sorry for such newbie question.
    Thanks Mike

    hmm now it says
    non static variable jTree1 can not be referenced from static context
    My code in ClasWithFormObjects is
    public static void setTreeModel (DefaultMutableTreeNode treemodel){
    jTree1.setModel(new DefaultTreeModel(treemodel));
    and in Class2 it is
    ClasWithFormObjects.setTreeModel(model);

  • Accessing a JTextField from another class

    I 've got 2 classes I am trying to get the value of a JTextField that located in a second class see the code
    class1 myClass = new class1();
    String text = myClass.jTextField1.getText();
    System.out.print(text);What happens is when i run the program and enter some text in the jTextFild1 and then click on my Jbutton it does not print anything
    the JButton is in the caller class
    Could anyone explains to me what is wrong

    an example would help maybe....
    if you want to access your jtextfield from another class then:
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class FieldHolderClass {
    public JTextField jtf = null;
    public FieldHolder() {
      JFrame jf = new JFrame();
      jtf = new JTextField();
      jtf.setText("this is the text that is here when other callerclass seeks for text");
      jf.getContentPane().add(jtf);
      jf.setVisible(true);
    public class CallerClass {
    public static void main(String args[]) {
      FieldHolderClass fHolder = new FieldHolderClass();
      System.out.println((fHolder.jtf.getText());
    }of course i have not written any swing app for a long time, so i might have forgotten everything... so, don't flame me when that code does not compile.
    the thing that it's supposed to show, is that you make a <b>public</b> variabel (jtf) and you simply ask for it from another class by typing holderclass instances name dot and that variable name (in this case jtf) and dot and then call the method on that variable (or object...)
    it might also be that you want your code to work the way that when you enter a text into jtextfield, then after pressing enter it would get printed on terminal...
    in that case you should also register some Listeners... i remember that back when i was just getin' to know java then i had problems with it as well... but then again, i didn't read any manuals...
    i hope i was somewhat help...

  • Access oracle database from different classes in desktop / standalone app.

    I am a bit confused as to what way to go. I am building a desktop application that needs to access an oracle database. I have done this in the past using code similar to the following:
            try {             DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());             Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(                     "jdbc:oracle:thin:@111.111.111.111:oracledb",                     "username", "password" );             // Create a Statement             Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();             ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery(                     "select ... from ...");             while (rs.next()) {                 ReportNumberCombo.addItem(rs.getString(1));             } // end of rs while             conn.close();         } //  end of try         catch( Exception e ) {             e.printStackTrace();         }
    The problem I would like to resolve is that I have this code all over the place in my application. I would like to have it in one objects method that i can call from other classes. I can't easily see how to do this, or maybe at this point I'm just too confused.
    I want to be able to change this connection info from a properties file which I have already done, not sure if this bit of information would change the answer to my question. I was also looking at the DataSource api, this looks like it is close to what I should use, what are your thoughts?
    I would also like to if JNDI is only for web applications or would be appropriate for a desktop app.
    Thank you for your help, I realize this is all over the place but I really need these topics cleared up!

  • Accessing MXML ArrayCollection from ActionScript class?

    I have an MXML file that has an arraycollection for my Tree
    component. I am overriding the updateDisplayList function in order
    to add lines to all of my nodes in the Tree.. however I can't seem
    to figure out how to access that ArrayCollection from inside the
    actionscript class?
    I have tried the methods used to pass variables between two
    MXML files (like a popup window - which I have used in the past and
    it works great).
    My actionscript class code is almost identical to this
    example here:
    http://www.iepl.net/treeControlSample/treeControlSample.html
    In the above example the data is static, but my data is going
    to change sometimes and I need access to the entire dataProvider
    (ArrayCollection) in order to make the lines work right.. this has
    been very frustrating for me! :)
    if anyone knows of a better way to achieve gettign lines to
    the siblings in a Tree.. please let me know!
    Any help would be super duper awesome!

    I have found the solution to this. My problem was similar to
    the one cheftimo was having in this post:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?forumid=60&catid=585&threadid =1367784&enterthread=y
    The answer is to import mx.core.Application into the
    component you are trying to access the variable from and then call
    it by using 'Application.application.<var name>'

  • Automatic generation of enum members from name Strings

    I have a program in which I read information about Target objects from a text file. I store some of this information as an enum property of the target.
    }else if (itemKey.equalsIgnoreCase( "type")) {
    currentTarget.descriptor= itemValue;
    currentTarget.type = Target.getTargetType(currentTarget.descriptor);And elsewhere in the program I do the file reading and assignment of instance variables:
    class Target{
    enum TargetType {COUGH_DROP, RICE_CRACKER, PEPTO_BISMOL,UNDETERMINED};
    String descriptor;
    TargetType type;
    returns the target' s type as specified by a descriptor
    public static TargetType getTargetType (String descriptorString) {
    if (descriptorString.equals( "rice cracker")) {
    return (TargetType.RICE_CRACKER);
    } else if (descriptorString.equals ("cough drop")){
    return (TargetType.COUGH_DROP);
    } else if (descriptorString.equals ("Pepto-Bismol")){
    return (TargetType.PEPTO_BISMOL);
    } else {
    return (TargetType.UNDETERMINED);
    } I would like to be able to automatically generate the members of the TargetType enum from a list of strings as opposed to needing a method such as getTargetType above. Is this possible?
    Regards,
    Joe
    PS: I completely apologize for the appearance of the code above. I have no idea why this editor removed my indentation and added HTML markers. (I copied the code from a text editor, pasted into this editor, selected the code sections and clicked on the code button )
    PPS I now see that after a couple of switches between preview and rich text in the HTML markers have disappeared. WTF?

    I'm very curious to understand why one would like to create enum constants at run time? How can therse enums be used in the code that is not created at runtime? What are you really trying to achieve
    I know you marked your question as answered, but... you may have a look at the code below. It is a very very simple example of how to map real life descriptions (at runtime) to pre-existing enums. I didn't test it, but for all I know it should just work. Does this solve the problem that you are experiencing?
    import java.util.HashSet;
    import java.util.Set;
    public enum TargetType {
        RICE_CRACKER("C:/Descriptions/RiceCrackers.txt"),
        COUGH_DROP("C:/Descriptions/CouphDrops.txt"),
        PEPTO_BISMOL("C:/Descriptions/PeptoBismol.txt"),
        UNDETERMINED("C:/Descriptions/Empty.txt"),
        public static TargetType getType(String description) {
         for (TargetType targetType : TargetType.values()) {
             if (targetType.contains(description)) {
              return targetType;
         return UNDETERMINED;

  • Using enum's from one class in another?

    heya,
    I have two classes, Predator and Simulation, and Predator has an public enum 'target' inside it.
    Simulation needs to use a switch statement based on target (Simulation contains a list of Predators, and I'm returning type target to Simulation), but I am getting errors when compiling the two classes from the commandline (for some weird reason, it works fine in Eclipse - both classes are in a package 'lepidoptera', which I originally thoguht was the issue).
    Errors are like (5 of these):
    Simulation.java:64: an enum switch case label must be the unqualified name of an enumeration constant
                    case (mimic):Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Victor

    This works for moi:
    public class Predator {
        public enum Target {SEITAN, TOFU, TEMPEH}
    public class Simulation {
        public static String f(Predator.Target target) {
            switch(target) {
                case SEITAN:
                    return "yuck";
                case TOFU:
                    return "ugh";
                case TEMPEH:
                    return "crikey";
                default:
                    return "nuts";
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            System.out.println(f(Predator.Target.SEITAN));
            System.out.println(f(Predator.Target.TOFU));
            System.out.println(f(Predator.Target.TEMPEH));
    }And do you know that an enum can be a top level class? In other
    words, that you can create the one-line file Target.java:
    public enum Target {SEITAN, TOFU, TEMPEH}

  • Accessing Enclosing Class Members From Inner Class Subclass

    I have the following scenario that I cannot get to work. Notice the comments in B.doWork() for the problem code. In B.doWork(), how do I access m_strA?
    * A.java
    * Created on July 5, 2002, 2:20 PM
    package Projects.InnerTrouble.Files;
    public class A {
         public abstract class InnerA {
              public abstract void doWork ();
         public String m_strA;
         /** Creates new A */
         public A ()
                   new InnerA() {
                             public void doWork ()
                                       System.out.println("A$InnerA$1's doWork() called!");
                                       m_strA = "Annonymous subclass of InnerA's doWork did this";
                        }.doWork();
         * @param args the command line arguments
         public static void main (String args[])
                   A oTemp = new A();
                   System.out.println(oTemp.m_strA);
                   B.getB(oTemp).doWork();
                   System.out.println(oTemp.m_strA);
    class B extends A.InnerA {
         public B (A a)
                   a.super();
         public void doWork ()
                   System.out.println("B's doWork() called!");
                   // How do I access m_strA within B's doWork() method?  The following is what I would expect to be the answer, but it does not compile
                   // A.this.m_strA = "B's doWork did this";
         private static A.InnerA sm_oInnerA;
         public static A.InnerA getB (A a)
                   if (sm_oInnerA == null)
                        sm_oInnerA = new B(a);
                   return (sm_oInnerA);

    The whole point is that B is not an inner class of A
    so it does not have access to A's member variables.
    Eventhough B extends an inner class of A, that does
    not make B an inner class of A. That is in the JLS,
    but not so elegantly as I have put it, hehe.
    If B were an innerclass of InnerA, then it would
    qualify to access A's member variables.OK, I think that you are finally getting through to my thick skull on this one. Let me restate and get your check-off on my understanding of the situation.
    The only classes with access to A's this reference are A and inner classes of A that are found within the definition of A. So, despite the fact that A and B are in the same package (and B should have access to A's non-private members because B and A are in the same package), and despite the fact that we would normally state that B "is a" InnerA (which is an inner class of A and would have access to a reference to the A.this reference), B is not allowed access to A.this (because B "is not really a" InnerA in the same way that the anonymous implementation of InnerA "is a" InnerA). However, nothing would prevent me from giving B access to a reference of the enclosing A as long as it was done via a method of InnerA, and as long as the implementation of that method is contained in A's implementation.
    Does this "access" rule realy make sense? Are you aware of the justification for this rule? Or is the justification stated in the JLS? I would think that the compiler ought to be able to figure this kind of thing out and allow it. It seems to me the fact that I defined B in the way that I did, and the fact that B "is a" InnerA, implies that I desired a fairly tight relationship to A. In fact, I desired the exact relationship that exists for the anonymous implementation of InnerA.
    The following is a modified version of my original example that runs as I originally wanted it to, but works around the access rules discussed on this forum thread:
    * A.java
    * Created on July 5, 2002, 2:20 PM
    package Projects.InnerTrouble.Files;
    public class A {
         public abstract class InnerA {
              public abstract void doWork ();
              /** added to allow implementors of InnerA that are not enclosed in A's class definition to have access to the enclosing class */
              public A myEnclosingInstance ()
                        return (A.this);
         public String m_strA;
         /** Creates new A */
         public A ()
                   new InnerA() {
                             public void doWork ()
                                       System.out.println("A$InnerA$1's doWork() called!");
                                       m_strA = "Annonymous subclass of InnerA's doWork did this";
                        }.doWork();
         * @param args the command line arguments
         public static void main (String args[])
                   A oTemp = new A();
                   System.out.println(oTemp.m_strA);
                   B.getB(oTemp).doWork();
                   System.out.println(oTemp.m_strA);
    class B extends A.InnerA {
         public B (A a)
                   a.super();
         public void doWork ()
                   System.out.println("B's doWork() called!");
                   // The following is what I would expect to be the answer, but it does not compile
                   // A.this.m_strA = "B's doWork did this";
                   // added myEnclosingInstance() to get functionality desired above
                   myEnclosingInstance().m_strA = "B's doWork did this";
         private static A.InnerA sm_oInnerA;
         public static A.InnerA getB (A a)
                   if (sm_oInnerA == null)
                        sm_oInnerA = new B(a);
                   return (sm_oInnerA);

  • How to Access MXML components  from ActionScript class

    Hi ,
    I am having a Application Conataner , in which i am having a Form Container with some Label in it .
    This is some thing similar to this as shown :
    <Mx:Application>
    <Mx:Form>
    <Mx:Label text="Hello world"/>
    </Mx:Form>
    </Mx:Application>
    Can any body please let me know how can i access this Form's Label , from an ActionScript class .
    catch(error:*)
    // Here i want to access these Objects and set data to that Label .
    Basically My requirement is that iinside the catch block of my ActionScript class , i want to set some text to the Label , Please
    let me know if this is possible or not also ??
    Waiting for your Replies .

    Hi these both are not same these refer to different one...
    Well let me explain...
    Application.application.myCustomComp.myLabel.text = "sometext"; sets the label "myLabel" which is present inside your customcomponent(which is in main application).
    Application.application.myLabel.text = "sometext"; sets the label "myLabel" which is present directly inside your main application.
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute">
    <mx:Label id="myLabel"  text=""/> // So inorder to set the label(myLabel) present here you will use directly the 2nd line of code.
    <mx:CustomComp id="myCustomComp" /> // So inorder to set the label(myLabel) present inside this component you use 1st line of code.
    </mx:Application>
    Hope now its clear.
    If this post answers your question or helps, please kindly mark it as such.

  • Accessing a servlet from another class

    Not to confuse anyone too much, but here's the scenario.
    I have a servlet that calles other Java classes which perform various functions. Now can I have one of these classes access the servlet directly, without setting up a socket based connection. What I mean is can I just simply call its methods and have access to the HttpServletResponse/HttpServletRequest objects?
    Usually the servlet gets accessed via an HTTP client where then servlet will call classes it needs to access, where here I have a class accessing the servlet directly.
    I do not have the capability of running servlets at the moment so I cannot just do a quick and dirty test to see how it would be done.
    Any input would be appreciated.

    If you have a servlet that contains methods that
    aren't related to the processing of a request (except
    for initialization) then those methods are in the
    wrong place. I don't know where they should be
    instead, that depends on your design. Perhaps you
    should post some details about what you are trying to
    do here.Currently I have not written code for what I am attempting.
    What I am attempting is quite an unorthodox approach of getting server information via a servlet. However unlike your standard servlet the servlet will be accessed via a java class, rather than being invoked from a URL.
    If I had to use psuedo-code I would put it like this:
    class A{
    public void accessHeaders(){
    // access servlet HttpRequest object.
    // use the object.
    // display header info...etc.
    // main prog.
    class Test {
    public static void main(String[] a){
    A a = new A();
    a.accessHeaders();
    The servlet will be a generic servlet which overrides a doGet().
    That's right an app accessing a servlet. I have done this but using the java.net package but I don't want to use that in this case. Can I implicitely call the servlet?
    Now the more I think about doing something like this the more I feel that it cannot be done this way.
    I am new to servlets so I don't know all the ways they can be used.

  • I am not able access static methods from startup class

    I have a simple java class which queries the Database and holds some data. I am trying to access a static method of this class from the StartupClass and I am not able to do so. But I am able to access a static variable of the same class.
    Can someone help me here.

    Well, welcome to the world of "hacked" phones. If your purchase was from the US, you obviously purchased an iPhone that is locked to a US carrier. The iPhone must have been jailbroken and unlocked via software to accommodate your foreign SIM card. Now that you have updated the phone, it is locked back to the US carrier. Only the carrier can authorize Apple to unlock the iPhone and none of the US carriers will unlock the iPhones. Best suggestion is to sell the phone and obtain a factory unlocked version directly from the Apple store.
    To answer your other question, there is not a supported method to downgrade iOS.

  • Problems accessing child swf from parent class

    First off: Hi. I'm new - to the forum and to Flash.
    I'm currently writing a flash app that requests a XML feed
    from a Java controller and loads child swfs into various parts of
    the stage based on the settings/URL details received from the XML
    feed.
    Its nearly there and I've got my head round a couple of weird
    things, but theres one thing left that I've found impossible to
    solve. Once the loader class has loaded the swf, it can't access
    its methods or set its variables and the child can't access the
    parent either (or access the parent's variables full stop). From
    what I've read this should be possible. Heres some of my code plus
    pseudo code:
    Note the Panel class is not linked to a symbol and uses
    composition to act like a movie clip, rather than inheritance.
    quote:
    class Panel{
    function Panel(owner:MovieClip, insName:String,
    depth:Number){
    initiates properties etc....
    panelMovie = owner.createEmptyMovieClip(insName,depth);
    listener.onLoadComplete = mx.utils.Delegate.create(this,
    scheduleModule);
    loader.addListener(listener);
    loader.loadClip(moduleX.url, panelMovie);
    function scheduleModule(){
    trace(panelMovie.key);
    trace(panelMove.keyTest());
    panelMovie.key = "dave";
    trace(panelMovie.key);
    Child swf:
    quote:
    var key:String = "test";
    As you can see I create an empty movieclip which I store a
    reference to in this class under the field "panelMovie". I then use
    this (instead of target_mc like you might do with an event handler)
    to try to access the child swf. The output is:
    trace(panelMovie.key); = "test" (Works fine)
    trace(panelMove.keyTest()); = (Nothing returned)
    panelMovie.key = "dave";
    trace(panelMovie.key); = "test" (Previous line = no effect)
    Is this something related to using a class? Really would be
    preferentially to keep all code outside of the fla.
    I've also tried a lot of different combinations of _root,
    _parent and _levelx. None of which I truly understand.
    Any help would be much appreciated! Plus any good tutorial
    links on timeline and referring to objects in it!
    (Couldn't find the code tag/button...)

    >>trace(panelMove.keyTest()); = (Nothing returned)
    You have panelMove here instead of panelMovie

  • Access textfield value from other class

    Hi guys,
    I got a little newbie-problem to solve.
    To say it simple I have the following code (2 classes):
    @interface class1 : UIViewController {
    IBOutlet UITextField *textField;
    @property(nonatomic, retain) UITextField *textField;
    @implementation
    @synthesize textField;
    @implementation class2
    class1 *class = [[class1 alloc] init];
    [[class textField] setText:@"text"];
    My problem is, that the text will not show up in the textfield.
    If I set the text in class1 everything works fine, but not when I try to set it from class2. The connections between the classes work well, because by using code completion it finds the textfield. I am not used to use property and synthesize, maybe thats the problem?
    Thanks for help,
    Krissi

    I'm more familiar with Mac programming and have just started playing with the iPhone SDK so I'm still trying to get my head around how iPhone apps are structured. It's a little hard to give you a definite answer without knowing more about your "class2" and how your xib file(s) are set up and perhaps which template you used to create your iPhone app.
    Assuming your xib file is named "class1.xib", it looks like the code you posted should load the xib. To check: set a breakpoint at that line, run in the debugger, once you stop at that line click the "Step over" button and see if the pointer value for your class1 variable gets updated.
    When you run your app are you even seeing the view with the text field on the screen? It may be that you've loaded the xib but you need to add it to your window. Here's a code snippet from the "MoveMeAppDelegate.m" file in Apple's "MoveMe" sample code for iPhone. This is from the "applicationDidFinishLaunching" method where the delegate object is loading a xib file and adding it to the window:
    UIViewController *aViewController = [[UIViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"MoveMeView"
    bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]];
    self.viewController = aViewController;
    [aViewController release];
    // Add the view controller's view as a subview of the window
    UIView *controllersView = [viewController view];
    [window addSubview:controllersView];
    [window makeKeyAndVisible];
    Hope this helps,
    Steve
