Accessing facade bean in ADF Faces managed bean

Hello
I am trying to display data from a database on a page using ADF Faces. I am using a Web Application [JSF, EJB] template in JDeveloper with the model project using JPA entities with a session facade bean to manage the entities (as described here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe1013jdev/10131/ejb_and_jpa/master-detail_pagewith_ejb.htm ).
What I have tried to do is to set up a managed session bean in the ViewController project that is referenced by a faces page. The managed bean is supposed to, on creation, load data from the database into managed properties which are then displayed on the faces page using EL references. I want all JPA management to go through the facade, and thus I want to inject the facade bean into the managed bean using @EJB notation. However, the injection does not work, and all I get is a NullPointerException when trying to access the injected facade in the managed bean.
I have also tried instantiating the facade bean in the managed bean's constructor manually, but when I try to call a method on the facade, I get another NullPointerException, this time from the entity manager which obviously is not injected into the facade bean.
What is strange is that the facade bean works perfectly when I use the datacontrols generated from the facade bean, as described in the tutorial (no exception from the entity manager).
I have searched high and low for a solution to this, and from what I can read, it should be possible to do what I want (see for example https://blueprints.dev.java.net/bpcatalog/ee5/persistence/ejbfacade.html and http://luxlog.wordpress.com/2007/12/15/basic-example-web-app-with-glassfish-netbeans-60-jsf-and-ejb3/ ). I found someone mentioning that dependency injection in the web container OC4J was added after a given version, and that web.xml needs to be upgraded to version 2.5, which I have done but did not solve anything.
Is this not possible in JDeveloper/OC4J at all? Is there any other way to access the facade session bean in managed beans?

Hi,
for resource injection you need JDeveloper 11. Here the EJB annotation works to inject the resource. If you want to do similar in 10.1.3 then you need to do a JNI lookup in the managed bean (under the shelves ADF does the same)

  • ADF Faces: Managed Beans

    Hi All,
    I have a situation where i need to pass the value to managed bean at runtime which inturn changes the values of menubar,menulist please can any one help me out.
    Regards
    Manasa Chanda

    What you probably want to do is expose the menubar.menulist component to your managed bean. This is fairly easy to do by editing the "Binding" property of the component. This will let you specify a Managed Bean, and a Property, or you can press a New button to create the bean, and/or the Property. Once you've exposed the component, the properties of the component are available through EL, including being able to change those properties from other components.

  • Use Faces Managed Bean in javaScript

    Thanks in Advance
    Scenario:
    I have got a faces manged bean that constucts a string array .On my page i have got select one list box .Based on my selection ,message to be displayed at the bottom of the page or a pop up window .This string array corresponds to the list box items description.
    I am doing an onclick() event ,when i click on an item in the list ,display the pop up window with the message. here i need to call the FACES MANAGED BEAN
    to display the message in the pop up window.
    Can any one suggest a way for this to start.

    Use a ValueChangeEvent to do that.

  • Customize faces managed bean loading in ADF ( in JDev 11.1.2.1)

    Hi there,
    I am trying to use Spring with ADF. The intention is to use Spring context managed beans to use as backing beans in ADF.
    I created a simple bean class. Created Data control based on it and tried to look at factoryClass, which is responsible for instantiating the bean class, oracle.adf.model.adapter.DataControlFactoryImpl.
    Where in ADF it creates the instances of backing beans? What is the best approach to solve this puzzle?
    With regards,

    I don't think your version of Jdeveloper supports CDI beans. It is my understanding that CDI beans will be supported next year in Jdeveloper.
    So for now, if you are using Jdeveloper, you are stuck with only JSF managed beans that need to go in the faces-config.xml files or managed beans annotations .....

  • [EJB3 - ADF Faces] entity bean design

    Hello,
    I have an existant application that use database view (very complex) to retrieve and display values from some tables.
    I have to reproduce the same thing with EJB3 ans ADF Faces in a web application.
    What is for you the best way to design entities beans ?
    1. Create some buisness objects (entity beans) and feed them with a query thru the database view ?
    2. Create a unique entity bean with only attributes who are used by the db view ?
    In this case, the entity bean will be used only for this query.
    3. ?
    I think the best solution is the first one.
    But in this case, how to display the result of the query in an ADF Faces table?
    With the 2nd solution the query returns a list of object which will be used by the adf table. That would be much easier.
    Thanks for your help.

    The popup dialog is used for looking up a value of fields on the form. I have fields "location id" and "sub location id", the popup has cascading drop down lists where I choose which ones I want, then return those values from the popup and display the selection in readonly text inputs. Other inputs also exist on the form. Together they all make the input parameters to the session facade's query.

  • Adf faces: execute bean method after table is loaded

    Hi,
    How can I execute a method after an adf table is rendered on the page?
    This is what I want to do:
    I have a master/detail:
    - the master part contains a list of materials
    - the details contains a list of customers and volumes depending on the selected material.
    I tried to add totals on the details table:
    - I created an output text in the footer-facet of the colums containing volumes
    - I created a binding of the detail table to a CoreTable.
    - I created a method in a managed bean related to this CoreTable binding, so I can browse to all rows in the table and calculate the sum.
    - I then set the value of the output text to the total calculated in the managed bean.
    the problem is that I don't know how to execute the calculate procedure after the data in the detail table exists.
    What I tried:
    - call the calculate procedure in the setCoreTable method. --> at this point, there is no data in the table and this results in a nullPointerException when the pages is loaded.
    - call the calculate procedure on the valueChangeListener of the material list --> this doesn't work because totals are calculated for the previous details set.
    - I tried to add the call in one of the table listeners but I cannot find a listener that is executed after data is loaded in the table...
    for testing purpose only, I added a button: calculateTotals that calculates the totals. This works correctly.

    Hi,
    if you use page fragments exposed in an ADF region, you have two options I see
    1. Use a method call activity to call the managed bean
    2. Use a hidden UI component that references the setter/getter exposed in a managed bean and just use this as an indication for the page fragment being loaded

  • Access the UI components in the managed bean

    I am newbie in Jdeveloper and just read the book of "Quick start guide to oracle developer"
    I am confused of the steps of accessing the UI component of the page
    e.g.
    public void salesman_valueChanged(ValueChangeEvent valueChangeEvent) {
    // Add event code here...
    getCommission().setDisabled(true);
    if (valueChangeEvent.getNewValue().equals("SA_REP")) {
    getCommission().setDisabled(false);
    getCommission is supposed to return the UI Component instance of text box commission.
    How can I implement this?
    Thanks.

    getCommission is supposed to return the UI Component instance of text box commission.Bind your UIComponent to your managedBean (you would need to register this in teh taskflow or adfc-config.xml) . This can be done using the Binding attribute in the Advanced tax for the inputText component.
    "binding=<MemoryScope_onlyIfOtherThanRequestScope.BeanName>.commission" .. this will generate a getCommission() & setCommission() method which can be used.
    Also please modify the code below to have a PPR on the component else it will not refresh on the UI-
    +public void salesman_valueChanged(ValueChangeEvent valueChangeEvent) {+
    +// Add event code here...+
    getCommission().setDisabled(true);
    +if (valueChangeEvent.getNewValue().equals("SA_REP")) {+
    getCommission().setDisabled(false);
    +}+
    AdfFacesContext.getCurrentInstance().addPartialTarget(getCommission());
    +}+

  • Accessing Managed Beans from Code

    Hi,
    How can I access managed beans from my code? I am too new to JSF to know if what I am doing is right from a design perspective. But what I am trying to do is to use Actions as sort of a Web Facade that aggregates state from other beans (all of them Managed beans right now) to build up state that is necessary for displaying pages.
    Thanks for you help
    Suhail

    Just answering my own question. The answer was given in a different thread (http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=427&thread=427057&message=1901909#1901909) . JSF has provided various Factories (look at the FactoryFinder API) that allow one I presume to access the internal state of a FacesContext. One of the factory is ApplicationFactory. This factory from what I can make out essentially gives you access to everything (actionlisteners, navigationhanlder,components etc) in you application. My original question was about accessing something (for some reason) named ValueBinding. I can access the managed beans declared in my faces-config.xml by invoking getValue(facesContext). I can naturally also set the value of a bean by invoking setValue(...). I just needed the getValue and it seems to work.
    Ofcourse keep in mind that the underlying managed bean will not necessarily be initialized when you access it so test for nullness. As a general rule I think its best not to create the beans but access them using this facility. After all its not for nothing these are called Managed Beans.
    Now if only the faces implementation would persist the changes to Navigation hanlders that one makes in the code ;-)

  • Access session values in Managed Bean

    I want to acces session attribute values in my Managed Bean class.
    This is my code in SecurityPhaseListener.java class,
    HttpSession session = (HttpSession)facesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().getSession(true);
    String isAuthorized = "false";
    session.setAttribute(isAuthorized, isAuthorized);
    This is my configuration for My managed bean in faces-config.xml class
    <managed-bean>

    <managed-bean-class>com.hli.vipstar.uswm.setnewday.managedbean.SetNewDayBean</managed-bean-class>
    <managed-bean-scope>request</managed-bean-scope>
    </managed-bean>
    Now i want to access the attribute "isAuthorized" in my managed bean SetNewDayBean.java.
    How to do this?
    Any one help me...........

    The same way, but then using getAttribute() instead of setAttribute().
    Another -more clean- way is to use the ExternalContext#getSessionMap(). It will make your code independent from the session implementation used. You may find this article useful as well: http://balusc.blogspot.com/2006/06/communication-in-jsf.html

  • How to get iterator values from a managed bean ?

    Due to a bug in selectOneChoice i'm not able to get the label list i want to display directly from an iterator when the value binding is a managed bean.
    To solve the problem i would like to create a managed bean that contains that list and use it as the selectItems to display.

  • Managed bean inheritance best practice

    Hi!
    I'm new to JSF so I would like to apologize if my question is trivial, but I haven't been able to find proper solution.
    I'm using JSF 1.2 on WAS CE. I have a page where user can search for some entities, both person and company, which share some data, but have some different properties. Both inherit from entity class, so search results are displayed in dataTable as base entity objects. Each dataTable row has commandLink which should navigate user to specific (person or company) page for editing data. For example, if user clicks on commandLink in person data row, I would like to show personEdit page with all data set to components. I understand that I can use action to set navigation to proper page, and I have done so (following action() method). I have implemented EntityBean, PersonBean and CompanyBean:
    public class EntityBean {
        protected Entity entity;
        public int getId() {
            return entity.getId();
        public void setId(int id) {
            entity.setId(id);
        public String action() {
            // Some code which defines return value for action invoking.
        public void edit(ActionEvent event) {
            // Get entity data for edit.
    public class PersonBean extends EntityBean {
        public String getFirstName() {
            return ((Person)entity).getFirstName();
    public class CompanyBean extends EntityBean {
        public String getName() {
            return ((Company)entity).getName();
    }I tried combining action with actionListener method (+edit(ActionEvent event)+ method) invoked from commandLink, but if it is invoked on mapped entityBean, I get only entity properties set on any other page which is shown after invoked action. If method is invoked on i.e. personBean (same method, not overriden), I get NullPointerException for trying to access property for base entityBean.
    How should I invoke proper data initialization for bean shown on another page?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you for your quick reply. Beside the code for managed bean classes, here's the rest of the code for this specific problem.
    In faces-config.xml I have the following configuration:
         <managed-bean>
              <managed-bean-name>entitySearchBean</managed-bean-name>
              <managed-bean-class>entities.EntitySearchBean</managed-bean-class>
              <managed-bean-scope>request</managed-bean-scope>
         </managed-bean>
         <managed-bean>
              <managed-bean-name>personBean</managed-bean-name>
              <managed-bean-class>entities.PersonBean</managed-bean-class>
              <managed-bean-scope>request</managed-bean-scope>
         </managed-bean>
         <managed-bean>
              <managed-bean-name>entityBean</managed-bean-name>
              <managed-bean-class>legalentities.EntityBean</managed-bean-class>
              <managed-bean-scope>request</managed-bean-scope>
         </managed-bean>On my JSP, I have a dataTable loaded with entityBean objects, and the following code for showing editPage:
         <h:column>
              <h:commandLink id="editLink" action="#{entitySearchBean.editEntity}" actionListener="#{entityBean.edit}">
                   <h:outputText value="#{bundle.edit}" />
                   <f:param id="editId" name="editId" value="#{entity.id}" />
              </h:commandLink>
         </h:column>
    </h:dataTable>So, what I'm trying to do is to call entityBean.edit which should initialize EntityBean with entity data, and it sets i.e. person data to entity field of EntityBean class. I also call editEntity method on EntitySearchBean class (bean used just for searching entities with some criteria), and pass id property of selected entity in dataTable.
    What I'm expecting is to get personEdit.jsp with loaded personBean data initialized from actionListener on searchPage.jsp. Is it possible or is there some other way to do this?

  • Managed bean returns null on SetActionListener

    Hi,
    I'm trying to implement a filter for my table (something similar to what's done in the "OracleAS 10g R3: Oracle ADF for Forms/4GL Developers/Volume II" student guide, practice 9-5). The idea is to have a request-scoped managed bean which holds the filter value - the value is set using a SetActionListener, and later bound to a bind variable in a view with a view criteria. I have problem re-creating this in Trinidad (JDev 11 TP3, to be exact).
    I have created a request-scoped bean in adfc-config.xml (called 'ecnStatusBean'), with a managed property (named 'Status'). I am referencing it from my SetActionListener: setting #{'E'} to #{requestScope.ecnStatusBean.Status}. The reference compiles fine in the Expression Builder (it didn't before I created the managed bean), but when running and clicking the CommandLink with the SetActionListener, I get a runtime error:
    oracle.security.jazn.JAZNRuntimeException: Target Unreachable, 'ecnStatusBean' returned null
         at oracle.security.jazn.oc4j.JAZNFilter.doFilter(JAZNFilter.java:480)
    To make things more interesting, I tried changing the scope to session, and got a different error:
    oracle.adf.controller.ControllerException: ADFC-10001: Cannot instantiate class 'pelephone.cdma_ecn.ecn_manager.model.ecnStatusMB'.
         at oracle.adfinternal.controller.util.Utils.createAndLogFacesException(Utils.java:169)
    Am I doing a rookie's mistake? Is this a Trinidad issue? Something else?
    Thanks in advance for any help,
    Boris

    Are you sure about the reference you use here: #{requestScope.ecnStatusBean.Status}.
    Here is a simple sample of what works for me:
    The first page has this:
          <af:form binding="#{backing_start.form1}" id="form1">
            <af:inputText label="Label 1" binding="#{backing_start.inputText1}"
                          id="inputText1"/>
            <af:commandButton text="commandButton 1"
                              binding="#{backing_start.commandButton1}"
                              id="commandButton1" action="go">
              <af:setActionListener from="#{backing_start.inputText1.value}"
                                    to="#{backing_start.paramToPass}"/>
            </af:commandButton>
          </af:form>It references a bean that has this:
        private RichInputText inputText1;
        public void setInputText1(RichInputText inputText1) {

  • Can't set managed bean property:

    Hi,
    I am trying to experiment with JSF and I am extending an example I downloaded from the web. When I added a new secret field and extened the bean. I get the following error. I trying to resolve this problem from two days , cant figure out why I get this exception. I tried changed the property name I still get the same error. It is something to do with the bean, I am not sure why its not able to set the property, I know that the get and set methods exist in the class file. Any help would be greatly appreciated . I have pasted the bean file, faces-config.xml, and the inputname.jsp file below. Thanks a lot.
