Accessing file on USB Drive

I have a requirement that my Air application accesses a file (SQL Lite) that resides on a USB drive.  Is there a way I can resolve the path to a USB drive at runtime?  Since I can't be sure what drive letter the USB device is mapped to (this will be distributed to a couple hundred users),  is there a way to detect this?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
nop the only way is if you are sure  for  one folder or  file name to parse the root of all volumes for find this name and  use the finded volume.

How do I Convert standalone .OVF\VMDK file to VHD, without having a VMWare server.  We have an .OVF file on USB drive.  Running Hyper V 2012 SP1 and need to convert this to run on our system.  Basically a vender of ours has decided
not to house our servers that they used to support one of our environments.  They used VMware and we are a Hyper V shop.  Now they are sending it back in an OVF format and telling us to convert it to VHD.  Only tool I found was Microsoft converter

If the Java application must be stand-alone you must not deploy it on WebLogic, then WebLogic will manage its lifecycle.
In this case you can use the CommonJ API and use the timermanager if it must run on a certain time. More information
of how to do this can be found here: http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=5569
If you keep the Java application stand-only and want to use a cron job you can follow the example presented here: http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=7065
Note that the example runs a WLST script, but you can follow the same steps to run your Java application.

  • [Solved] Delete files from usb drive connected to wireless router

    Hello,
I have a home network with Samba for file sharing.
I have a Netgear router with a Western Digital 2TB external drive attached to the router.
I installed Samba according to the arch wiki and everything works fine but I cannot delete or access some files from the shared USB drive.
I access the file as follows:
    $ cd /mnt/smbnet/WORKGROUP/READYSHARE/USB_Storage/
    Here are the permissions:
    $ ls -l /mnt/smbnet

The USB drive is Western Digital My Book 2 TB drive attached as a NAS to the router that shares it.  I installed Samba on the arch machine so I can access and backup various home computers onto the NAS.
Here is some info I just found on the Western Digital Support site:
The Western Digital units mentioned above use a proprietary file system and cannot be reformatted as FAT32, NTFS, or a Mac File System.
The file system on the WD My Cloud EX2, WD My Cloud EX4, WD My Cloud, WD My Book Live, WD My Book Live Duo, WD ShareSpace, WD ShareSpace, WD TV Live Hub, My Net N900 Central, WD My Book World Edition, WD NetCenter hard drives support access from Windows, Mac and most Linux based computer systems through a SAMBA network sharing connection.
I thought I would mention that I can access the NAS and write, read and execute from the drive.
    $ cd /mnt/smbnet/WORKGROUP/READYSHARE/USB_Storage/
    [edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ mkdir Test
    [edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ ls
    BACKUPS Test WD
    [edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ cd Test
    [edgar@arch Test]$ vim testfile.txt

    -rwxr--r-- 1 edgar users 16 Jul 23 07:47 testfile.txt
    [edgar@arch Test]$ cat testfile.txt
    This is a test.
    [edgar@arch Test]$ rm testfile.txt
    [edgar@arch Test]$ cd ..
    [edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ rm -r Test/
    [edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ ls
    BACKUPS WD
However I want to copy large files with cp -ruv from my arch machine to the NAS.
This is where the trouble lies.  Thanks for your help.

I am trying to pull files off usb port, where do I plug in and how do I access the files?

You connect the drive to any USB port on the computer or keyboard, and then select it from the desktop, Finder's sidebar, or Computer in the Go menu.

  • Can't see files on USB drive on PC side

I'm on an intel mac and I have an USB external hard drive. I can only read and write to the drive on the Mac side. I would love it if i could access files (read and write) on the PC side too. Please help!!! Thanks

If you formatted the drive in an Apple file format Windows won't be able to read it unless you turn on personal file sharing and Windows sharing in the System Preferences and access it through the Mac. Otherwise, you would need to reformat it as FAT 32 to share files directly but that format has a 4 GB file size limit.
If you have an Airport Express Base Station you could connect it to that as a network drive and then you could share files with it, as the AEBS would handle the actual file reads and writes to and from the drive.

  • Can't Delete Files on USB Drive Connected to Airport Extreme

I'm trying to delete some files on a USB drive connected to my Airport Extreme, but I keep getting a error message that I don't have sufficient privileges to do so. I've tried super deletion applications like FileXaminer, without any success. What other methods are there?

    Thanks for the info.
Were you using the drive for Time Machine backups, by chance? Time Machine backups are stored in a different format when the disk is connected directly to a computer. So, you won't be able to continue to use the old backups when the drive location is changed.
You might want to check the drive by connecting directly to your Mac and running Disk Utility to "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" if indicated.
Even if the drive has it's own power supply, a powered USB hub is usually needed on the AirPort Extreme because the power at the USB port is quite limited.

  • Single-user mode: How to mount and access an external USB drive?

My MacBook Pro HD is acting up. Cannot boot normally or into "safe mode". Cannot reinstall OS without wiping out the HD. Need to recover some critical files but DiskUtil First Aid and Restore options cannot successfully complete. Problem traced down to "invalid node structure" which means I either have a hardware problem or my filesystem partition directory structure is corrupted. I need to recover some files that are not backed up (timin issue with my regular backup process).
I can boot into single-user mode, mount the root file system (/sbin/mount -uw /) and can see/navigate the rot filesystem structure via good UNIX command line. Here's what I would like to do (in single-user mode):
    1. Mount an external USB drive (250 GB already formatted as Mac OS X Extended)
    2. Copy various files and/or directories from my HD to the external USB drive (UNIX cp command)
I realize I could go spend $$ for the Disk Warrior or Data Rescue products (or something similar) that SHOULD help me recover my HD or files, but it seems silly to do this when I can see, touch and taste them from within single-user mode....
    Comments? Suggestions?
    TIA --
    Trent
P.S. Once I've recovered my files, I'll try to reformat the HD and then reinstall the OS. And THEN go have Apple look at my machine (thank goodness for AppleCare coverage)!

    Resolution:
    1) Boot system in single-user mode (SUM) with external HD attached.
    2) Execute the following UNIX CLI commands once SUM boot process is completed:
    # fsck -fy
    # mount -uw /
    # mkdir /Volumes/target_directory
    # mount -t hfs -w /dev/diskXXX /Volumes/target_directory
    # cp -RXv /source_directory /Volumes/target_directory
Where XXX is the device-level name for your external HD's data partition. In my case this was /dev/disk1s2. It may take some experimentation to identify this device name if your system has multiple HD's.
    3) Verify contents were successfully copied onto the /Volumes/target_directory.
    Comments and observations:
    - Do NOT use "/" as your source directory - cp will make a second (redundant) copy of /volumes/target_directory
    - I was able to successfully copy ALL files off my HD despite the fsck command's "invalid node structure" error message with this simple procedure. YMMV, depending on the state of your HD.
    - The repeated disk0s2: I/O error warnings displayed during the SUM boot process did not seem to have a negative effect on this procedure. I also received this same error warning intermittently as I navigated the mounted filesystem did not seem to be a problem, either. Again, YMMV.
    Commercial software:
I downloaded ProSoft Engineering's Data Rescue 3 product (trial version) before spending $99 to attempt to recover my "bad" HD's data via mounting to a good system with FW target mode. It could not successfully complete its "QuickScan" process and immediately hung on block 0 of 390M during its "Deep Scan" process. The product did seem to function properly on an operational system. ProSoft's technical support was responsive and helpful but had no answer for my "Deep Scan" error.
I did not attempt to use Alsoft's Disk Warrior 4 product. I could not find any trial software available and was reluctant to spend $100 based upon the mixed reviews and comments on this discussion forum as well as other reviews. Alsoft does claim to address the "invalid node structure" error in their marketing materials. Hindsight being 20/20 - I saved $100 by using this simple procedure.
    Final note:
Neither Leopard nor Snow Leopard's installation DVD could recognize the bad internal HD when trying to do a reinstall. While DiskUtil was able to "see" the bad internal drive it immediately failed when I tried to do an "erase and format". Took the system to my local Apple store and the Genius ran a tool called "SMART Utility" from Volitans Software (www.volitans-software.com). SMART utility confirmed that my HD was bad so it was replaced. AppleCare pays for itself (once again!).

  • After installing OS X Yosemite my USB drive is not working as it was. It does not show any files in USB drive.

After I installed the latest OS X Yosemite my USB drive is not loading any files or folders which is located in it. Sometime it just show a blank window and sometime it shows folders and files but not clickable.

I have same problem but didn't find solution… If I put USB drive no files shown on finder… But If I use ForkLift files are showing but only in Forklift…
Need some clue how to fix it...

  • How to access files in USB stick when installing from it?

I have prepared my installable USB stick (8G) from Arch 2009.02 ISO file, and copied some configuration files to the USB stick. Everything looks well.
After the Arch installation (not reboot yet), I want to access my configuration files on the stick, but I just cannot find them. Where has my USB stick been mounted to, and how can I read the files on it?
    I am confused...

lilsirecho wrote:To mount your USB stick you can mount it as root.  Using sd(x) as an example, mkdir /mnt/sd(x) in /mnt...
Of course I tried this, but failed. Well, maybe what I said above is not explicit enough. I mean:
    1. the USB stick is just the installable USB stick I used to install Arch;
    2. not mounting the USB stick on the system I've installed, but just on the live arch linux OS that the installable USB stick introduced.
After all, I was booting from the USB stick, so it may have been mounted. In fact, I can find it by:
      # cat /proc/mounts
In the output, my USB stick is /dev/sdb1, and the mounted directory is /bootxxx (not remembered, sorry), but I JUST cannot find this directory. So I was confused.
lilsirecho wrote:...Confused here that you used an .iso to generate a USB stick installer when the download archlinux-2009.02 is available in .img format for both i686 and X86_64...
Yes, I know there's an IMG file for USB stick. But I don't want to use it, because after I use "dd" command writing the IMG file to the USB stick, the stick became the same size (about 330Mb) as the IMG file. Then how can I copy some other files into this 8G USB stick?
So, I used archlinux-2009.02 ISO file. I prepared my USB stick by cfdisk, and formated it. I mounted the ISO file to some directory (using abc as an example), and copied all the files in abc to my USB stick, then installed grub on it. Finally, an installable 8G USB stick was made.

  • Can't Convert Lossless Files From USB Drive to AAC?

Hello, I have a conversion problem from some Lossless files that I have put in a USB drive (so I won't have to keep re-importing the CD's). Everytime I try to convert, I get this:
But if I import the CD's into Lossless THEN convert to AAC from the imported file, it works! I don't want to keep importing, but I want to keep the original files on my USB drives ...please help!

Hello ed and thank you for replying!
Well, I did drag the Lossless files from iTunes to the USB and I did check the properties of the file in the USB and well, I see it is an MPEG-4 audio file (like my other song files are in iTunes).
and I'm sorry if I can't exactly find out if there are CDA files or not.
I also did try ripping the CD files and placing them on the USB but I will try again!

  • Lockups when accessing files on other drives

I have 845PE Neo2, with most up to date drives and bios.  Just built.  Have 4 hard drives, 2 of which are on the raid channel.  When accessing files on any other drive aside from C: the system will lock up.  For example, I have mulitple movie files on one drive.  If i look though and watch about 10 or 15 of them, the entire system will lock.  Can't move mouse, no CTRL, ALT, Delete.  Only fix is to reboot.  RAM (2 sticks of 512 DDR 2700), CPU Intel 3.0 800FSB), and hard drives(120gig WD special edition, 120 gig maxtor, 60 gig Maxtor, 80 gig WD, ATI 9800 Pro, 6 system fans.) have all worked before with no problem.  Only thing new is MB.  I have reinstalled windows XP Pro with new MOBO.  Any idea what could be causing this or do i possibly have a bad board.  I have bios set to default settings.

  • How to access Time Capsule USB Drive data remotely via iPad

How can I (with my iPad) remotely access some .xls files stored on a USB Pen Drive attached to my Time Capsule?

This is very difficult.. I have heard there is AFP file app for the ipad but haven't seen if it can work.. the normal file app for ipad is actually SMB based.. TC does not offer SMB to WAN.
If the files are small, cloud is your best choice.
If you really need access to the TC, then use vpn.. I believe there is a vpn function in the ipad.. get a vpn router and bridge the TC.. you should then be able to safely and securely connect and get files.
