[Solved] Delete files from usb drive connected to wireless router

Hello,
I have a home network with Samba for file sharing.
I have a Netgear router with a Western Digital 2TB external drive attached to the router.
I installed Samba according to the arch wiki and everything works fine but I cannot delete or access some files from the shared USB drive.
I access the file as follows:
$ cd /mnt/smbnet/WORKGROUP/READYSHARE/USB_Storage/
Here are the permissions:
$ ls -l /mnt/smbnet
total 0
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 0 Dec 31 1969 DEANSNETWORK
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 0 Dec 31 1969 MYGROUP
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 0 Dec 31 1969 WORKGROUP
$ ls -l /mnt/smbnet/WORKGROUP/
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Dec 31 1969 READYSHARE -> ../READYSHARE
$ ls -l /mnt/smbnet/WORKGROUP/READYSHARE/
total 0
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 0 Dec 31 1969 USB_Storage
$ ls -l /mnt/smbnet/WORKGROUP/READYSHARE/USB_Storage/
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 edgar users 0 Jul 22 21:04 BACKUPS
drwxr-xr-x 2 edgar users 0 Jul 15 10:43 WD
$ ls -l /mnt/smbnet/WORKGROUP/READYSHARE/USB_Storage/BACKUPS/

drwxr-xr-x 2 edgar users 0 Jul 22 21:04 TRASH
drwxr-xr-x 2 edgar users 0 Jul 12 09:50 Work_Laptop
If I try to delete the BACKUPS directory, I get errors:
$ rm -r BACKUPS/
rm: cannot remove ‘BACKUPS/Laurie_Laptop’: Permission denied
rm: cannot remove ‘BACKUPS/TRASH/Documents/C++Prog/2541/BibleTriviaTest’: Permission denied
rm: cannot remove ‘BACKUPS/TRASH/Documents/C++Prog/2541/HouseTest’: Permission denied
rm: cannot remove ‘BACKUPS/TRASH/Documents/C++Prog/Bitmanip’: Directory not empty
rm: cannot remove ‘BACKUPS/TRASH/Documents/C++Prog/CurrentMusicPrograms/Musc110’: Directory not empty
etc...
Attempting to change the mode doesn't work:
$ chmod 777 BACKUPS/
[edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ ls -l
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 edgar users 0 Jul 22 21:04 BACKUPS
drwxr-xr-x 2 edgar users 0 Jul 15 10:43 WD
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Here is the output:
$ mount | grep /mnt
smbnetfs on /mnt/smbnet type fuse.smbnetfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=1000,group_id=100)
The USB drive is Western Digital My Book 2 TB drive attached as a NAS to the router that shares it.  I installed Samba on the arch machine so I can access and backup various home computers onto the NAS.
Here is some info I just found on the Western Digital Support site:
The Western Digital units mentioned above use a proprietary file system and cannot be reformatted as FAT32, NTFS, or a Mac File System.
The file system on the WD My Cloud EX2, WD My Cloud EX4, WD My Cloud, WD My Book Live, WD My Book Live Duo, WD ShareSpace, WD ShareSpace, WD TV Live Hub, My Net N900 Central, WD My Book World Edition, WD NetCenter hard drives support access from Windows, Mac and most Linux based computer systems through a SAMBA network sharing connection.
I thought I would mention that I can access the NAS and write, read and execute from the drive.
$ cd /mnt/smbnet/WORKGROUP/READYSHARE/USB_Storage/
[edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ mkdir Test
[edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ ls
BACKUPS Test WD
[edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ cd Test
[edgar@arch Test]$ vim testfile.txt
[edgar@arch Test]$ ls -l
total 1
-rwxr--r-- 1 edgar users 16 Jul 23 07:47 testfile.txt
[edgar@arch Test]$ cat testfile.txt
This is a test.
[edgar@arch Test]$ rm testfile.txt
[edgar@arch Test]$ cd ..
[edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ rm -r Test/
[edgar@arch USB_Storage]$ ls
BACKUPS WD
However I want to copy large files with cp -ruv from my arch machine to the NAS.
This is where the trouble lies.  Thanks for your help.

  • Cannot Delete Folders from USB drive connected to Airport Extreme

    When I try to delete files from the usb drive connected to my airport I get "cannot remove folder, the directory is not empty.
    This only happens for some of the folders that are empty. No problem deleting any files whether they were created before or after I setup the airport. The folders that won't delete were created after I hooked up the drive to the airport however, I can make new folders and delete them no problem now. The ones that don't delete say "read only" in the properties. when I uncheck read only it reverts back to read only automatically.
    Any ideas what might be causing this?

    Tried what you suggested last night - no change. What is odd, though, is that I can create a new folder on the external USB HDD (through the Hub) and copy a file into it. While I can then close Finder, re-open and see the Folder and file I copied, I still can't see all the data that is currently stored on the drive...Is this a delete and re-copy scenario?
    Thanks!

  • Can't Delete Files on USB Drive Connected to Airport Extreme

    I'm trying to delete some files on a USB drive connected to my Airport Extreme, but I keep getting a error message that I don't have sufficient privileges to do so. I've tried super deletion applications like FileXaminer, without any success. What other methods are there?

    Thanks for the info.
    Were you using the drive for Time Machine backups, by chance? Time Machine backups are stored in a different format when the disk is connected directly to a computer. So, you won't be able to continue to use the old backups when the drive location is changed.
    You might want to check the drive by connecting directly to your Mac and running Disk Utility to "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" if indicated.
    Even if the drive has it's own power supply, a powered USB hub is usually needed on the AirPort Extreme because the power at the USB port is quite limited.

  • Share files from 2 computers connected to same router from remote location

    I can remotely (from external IP) share file from one computer connected to my router but I cannot share with other machines on my home network. Same with ARD access. Is there a way to access multiple machines across my router?

    The only easy way to do this would be to use something like Back To My Mac with a MobileMe subscription or [LogMeIn|https://www.logmein.com].
    The problem with what you're trying to do is that your entire home network only has one IP address to the outside world. How did you get it working in the first place? I'm assuming you've got a wireless router and set up port forwarding on the router to redirect traffic to a specific machine. The problem there is that file sharing uses a specific port (548), and you can only map that port to one machine at a time.
    One possibility would be to use different services for different machines. For example, you could share files normally (port 548) on one machine and via FTP (port 21) on another. Another possibility would be to enable screen sharing on the one you can access from outside your home network, then use screen sharing to make that machine log in to the other machines on the network. Of course, neither of these are ideal solutions.

  • Time machine backup from USB drive connected and backing up to Time Capsule

    Hi all forum virgin here, so be gentle.
    I'll get straight to it. Much net trawling hasn't resulted in a definitive answer on this which surely I'm not alone in
    I have: MBP networked to TC (where TM resides) and USB drive connected.
    A- I simply want to TM backup not only MBP but USB drive on network as well?
    As far as I can see there is no way of selecting this and after TM back has finished the only way I can check is
    to enter TM (fancy space screen view) and obviously idrive doesn't appear in finder view.
    I have tried connecting to MBP and obviously TM backs it up too and I can see in Enter TM. But I need this
    drive on network so a further 2 things here:-
    B- when I remove from MBP and TM backs up again will it see it's not there and delete as a change?
    C- will it keep in previous backups if I cycle back to that particular one?
    Andy help here would be most welcome

    Sooner or later, yes, as LaPastnague says.  It depends on when the backups are done.  The first backup of each day is kept for a month;  all others are deleted after 24 hours.  After a month, the first backup of the week is kept as long as there's room, and the others deleted.
    Obviously not a reliable solution.
    A better method might be to use a different app to back it up to the TC's internal HD, but that presents another problem.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.
    The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSynch can do network backups (others probably can, too).
    So you might be able to "reserve" some space on the TC's HD and use one of those apps.  As LaPastnague says, though, that will be relatively slow.
    If there isn't enough room on the TC's internal HD, you could get another USB drive and connect it to the TC also (via a powered USB hub) and back up to it.  That will be even slower, though.

  • Deleted files from USB Disk attached to Airport Extreme

    I deleted files from a USB disk attached to my airport extreme.  I then needed to recover them  but they are not in the trash can...how can I find and restore these files?  I have not emptied the trash.  I am just looking in the trash in my bar at the bottom bar.  I got the message that asked if I wanted to send them to the trash and I said yes...help, I need the files!
    Thanks,
    Josh

    Unfortunately, as the message clearly states.....the file(s) will be deleted immediately....not moved to the trash.
    If you want to experiment, a utility like Disk Warrior might be able to salvage some of the data on the disk....IF....you have not made any changes on the disk since you deleted the files.
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
    But, it will be much quicker to simply restore a copy of the file(s) from your backups.

  • Moving files from USB drive (iPod in disk mode) stops and hangs Finder

    I’m having trouble trying to copy a load of music files from my iPod to my new MacBook. The iPod is in disk mode so I’m just using it to move a load of MP3 files from my old PC to my MacBook. They copied from the PC fine and are sat in a fold on the iPod (which I boot into disk mode and connect to my MacBook running Leopard 10.5.5).
    The disks mount fine and I can read and playback the files, but when I start to copy them to my MacBook after a minute or too the progress bar stops and it just sits there. I have thousands of file that I need to move and even tried to move say 100 at a time, but after the first few hundred it just stops again.
    I have to force quit the finder, but this then hangs the finder unless I disconnect my iPod and then the finder starts back up but warns me that I have removed a driver without first ejecting it.
    My iPod is a Video model 5.5 80GB which I connect via USB 2.0 to my MacBook. Anyone got any ideas why copying the files isn’t working?

    Thanks for those suggestions. I have tried copying them one by one, but with over 6000 files it’s just not feasible to do this. I don't think adding more memory will help as my MacBook is the new Aluminum model with a 2.0GHz processor and 2GB. I have also tried connecting the same iPod to a Mac Pro with dual 2.8GHz processors, 4GB memory and a set of RAID hard drives and this also has the same problem as my MacBook.
    Also, none of the files have any DRM protection.

  • Can I delete files from Hard Drive (Itunes) without autodeletion from Ipod?

    I have limited hard drive space and from what I can tell Itunes autoupdate will automatically delete music from my IPOD as I delete it off of my computer hard drive. Is this true?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the link. The music I want to delete is for CDs I own and have no need to keep on my hard drive. I'm hoping I can delete the music file and the library file will keep the title on it.

  • Can't Convert Lossless Files From USB Drive to AAC?

    Hello, I have a conversion problem from some Lossless files that I have put in a USB drive (so I won't have to keep re-importing the CD's). Everytime I try to convert, I get this:
    But if I import the CD's into Lossless THEN convert to AAC from the imported file, it works! I don't want to keep importing, but I want to keep the original files on my USB drives ...please help!

    Hello ed and thank you for replying!
    Well, I did drag the Lossless files from iTunes to the USB and I did check the properties of the file in the USB and well, I see it is an MPEG-4 audio file (like my other song files are in iTunes).
    and I'm sorry if I can't exactly find out if there are CDA files or not.
    I also did try ripping the CD files and placing them on the USB but I will try again!

  • Deleting files from hard drive

    How can I delete files without Finder asking for my digital ID? This is annoying

    I thought that was it so I checked. I had downloaded some white papers off the Internet, but I copied some files into a folder on the hard drive that I created and it still asked for my password.  However I have an external drive and it does not ask me for a passward to delete a file on my external drive.

  • Ethernet NAS vs. USB drive connected directly to router

    I Currently stream data on a WD MyBook usb 2.0 hard drive connected to my routers USB port.  This data is streamed wirelessly to my Blu Ray and it has been pretty stable for a few years now.   If I now attach a Seagate NAS (STCT8000100) directly to the router using gigabit Ethernet what practical difference will I see? Will the NAS be as reliable or better (or worse)?  I expect that the streaming will be comparable due to the wireless part of the equation but will there be system overhead due to Ethernet vs. USB 2.0 That mucks with stability vs. my current set up?   Am I overthinking this?

    Why on Earth would anyone need that much bandwidth for home usage?

  • Getting files from a PC via a wireless router?

    I am trying to get files from my room mate's laptop by going to Finder and then Network. I see the computer's name (Toshiba-User) with a light gray network icon and when I double click to connect, it shows me the little white bar with the blue lines through it then it says:
    "SMB/CIFS File System Authentication
    Enter the workgroup or domain and your user name and password to access the server "TOSHIBA-USER."
    Workgroup or Domain:
    WORKGROUP (<-----that's a text box, I can type whatever I want in it but it's filled out like that automatically.)
    Name:
    LUIS (<------------That's another blank text box but it's automatically filled out like so)
    Password:
    (blank text space)
    (box) remember this password in my keychain
    Cancel OK
    My room mate claims to never have set up any kind of "WORKGROUP" and doesn't even know what the password is. I need the assistance of the more mac-experienced!

    Actually, you need someone more PC-experienced.
    The fact is, if the PC user never defined a workgroup, then 'WORKGROUP' is the default, so that's what his machine is.
    Despite how it may look, the Mac doesn't know that, it's just an assumption since it's the default on your Mac, too, unless you've changed it in Directory Access.
    As for the Username, it's defaulting to 'Luis' since that's your username on your machine. The Mac OS assumes that your username is the same on the other machine, but if it isn't you're welcome to change it here.
    As for the password, the account should have a password set on it - note that this is the password for the account on the remote PC and is in no way related to any password set on your machine.
    You'd need to talk to your roommate to find out what username and password you should use to log onto his machine.
    If he's truly never set a password on his machine, then the machine should be blank, but that's a horribly scary situation to be in - a Windows system with no password set? :: shudder :: I'm surprised it's not crawling across the desk with all the bugs, spyware and viruses it must be infected with.

  • Don't see files on USB Drive connected to Airport Extreme

    I just connected an external drive to my Airport Extreme via USB. It appears as a shared device in the finder sidebar. When I select it, none of the files that reside on the drive appear. It is a 1TB drive with 600GB of files on it, but none of the files show up, only a folder with the drive name. I open the folder and it is empty. The folder window shows 300 GB available. How do I make the existing files visible?

    Thanks for the info.
    Were you using the drive for Time Machine backups, by chance? Time Machine backups are stored in a different format when the disk is connected directly to a computer. So, you won't be able to continue to use the old backups when the drive location is changed.
    You might want to check the drive by connecting directly to your Mac and running Disk Utility to "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" if indicated.
    Even if the drive has it's own power supply, a powered USB hub is usually needed on the AirPort Extreme because the power at the USB port is quite limited.

  • Can't drag/delete files from C Drive after moving them into the D Drive

    Like many others, I have depleted my C Drive space and needed to move my iTunes folder into mt D Drive. I got these instructions from iTunes which tell me that after I have moved the files into the D Drive to find the old files in my C Drive and just drag them into the recycle bin. When I try that it tells me it can't be done because of copywrite protection issues. I need to free up that C Drive space by getting rid of those files. Can anyone help with this? I'd preferr an e-mailed answer if you could. Thanks.
