Which Office version are you using?
If it's Office 2013 then Acrobat 10 pdfmaker is not compatible.

I downloaded Adobe Acrobat 11 Pro, dutifully created an Adobe ID and password, and then came the brick wall: Adobe Download Assistant. That was the end of the road. There were no options to get beyond it. Does anyone else out there know the secret way in?

There is no support for trial versions, anyway, so it's a moot point. It says so in the fineprint. If you can't download with the assistant, you might try that:

The system was not my own, it was on a PC belonging to the school where I teach. The error message referred to Acrobat 9.0, so I assume that the problem is to do with the version on which the file was created being more recent than that on which I attempeted to open it.

It sounds like you've enabled the High-Contrast Color option under Edit > Preferences > Accessibility (Win) or Acrobat > Preferences > Accessibility (Mac). Uncheck the 'Replace Document Colors' checkbox, then hit 'OK' to turn this off.

Look for these two files.
AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
AdobePDFViewer.plugin
Right click on those and select “Move To Trash”.
Restart the computer.

If your device is not recognized by iTunes, I would recommend the steps in the article below. Start with the section labeled Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed > For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 > Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver.

Office for Mac, http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products, can open/edit/create Office documents.If your external drive is formatted NTFS then you can copy the Office documents to your computer and work on them. You won't be able to save the files back to your NTFS formatted drive. But you will be able to save the documents to your internal drive. You can move all the external files to your internal drive then format the external drive for Apple. Then you can copy the files back to your external drive for ongoing use.
