thanks to both for the suggestions
You are very welcome.
@dovn
I red the page, the fact is that I'm not able to figure out what's causing the problem
the application freezes in any occasion, even when the mac was just turned on..
could it be that it's somehow in conflict with an other process running in background?!
Sometime conflict occur, but I doubt with Activity Monitor.
I was thinking of maybe I could just insert the OSX application disk that came with the macbook and trying that way reinstalling the app?!
Did your machine come with Snow? Anyway, I would do a repair install of Sno by installing Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Such an install, while usually very safe, still is an install so be appropriated backed up if you proceed. You will need to reinstall 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 after the repair install. Do so using only the [10.6.2 combo updater|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959].This approach might fix any corruption leading to your problem.

  • Activity Monitor Keeps Locking Up

Every time I try to access the activity monitor, I get the SBOD. How do I fix this?

Open the Console application and look for log entries made around the last time you tried to open the Activity Monitor. If the logs tell you that pmTool isn't setuid, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to repair your permissions and try again. If you get another message, post back with the complete text of that message.

  • Active windows keep disconnecting and going to secondary (?), active windows keep disconnecting and going to secondary (?)

Since I installed Lion I cannot keep the active window at the front. After one second it goes back to secondary... Funny thing is that I can scroll, but I cannot write!

    I sorted it out!
In my case it was due to an incomatibility issue with one of my apps.
I only had to uninstall HIPERSPACES and now it is all working smoothly!

  • Ftp activity monitoring on windows and ftp service

    hey guys,
i have several problems configuring the ftp service on my xserve - when creating a user, which will connect to ftp, everything seems to be ok, but when trying to connect - it does not make the LIST command. failed to get the list and that's it.
when trying to connect not in a just simple ftp mode, but in sftp (ssh) - it connects with no problem, fast, but seeing all of the directories in my server. well this is the main problemo i get. i want a user to see only his folder with it's contents. yes, i tried "user can see his home directory only". nothing helps. or i do smthng wrong with the creating of users and their dir's?
another thing. did you guys ever heard of a thing like to monitor ftp activities in the xserve on windows? see, we are a printing house. the clients are uploading their files onto the server via ftp, and a person must see all of the activities, so he can operate with the files later on using the workflow system. well another way or solution would be configuring automator do deliver the files into a certain hotfolder, so the workflow can automatically process them. to tell the truth, i never tried automator:) does it do smthng like this? like, it sees when the file is uploaded to the end and delivers it?
i got the xserve not so long ago. well i thing that was the smartest decision of this year. the thing is, all workstations in the house are pc's. don't ask why:) it's because of the software was bought long ago and was for win, so we have to buy everything new if we want to get mac's in the house. aaaand it costs a bit of fortune in the printing business.
so only the server is xserve, all workstations are pc's, so that is the question: how to monitor ftp activities on the xserve on a pc workstation?
guys, please help. this is a great importance to me.

when trying to connect - it does not make the LIST command. failed to get the list and that's it.
This is a classic passive vs. active FTP problem - the #1 problem with FTP and firewalls. You need to toggle the mode in the client.
another thing. did you guys ever heard of a thing like to monitor ftp activities in the xserve on windows
The only thing I can think of is going to be server-side. Either a Folder Action (or maybe Automator workflow) or a process that watches the FTP logs and takes appropriate action. Either way this is something you want to run on the server rather than on a client system.

  • Activity Monitor, Memory and Freezes

I've had a few Logic freezes recently so I open Activity Monitor to try and find some info. Firstly if the CPU use and threads next to Logic Pro keep changing is there a chance that Logic will unfreeze if it's been stuck for say over 5 minutes?
Also I'm trying to see how near I am to the memory ceiling. I've got 32 GB in my MacPro so it's not a shortage of RAM more hitting the single app limit. I don't understand the relationship between "Real Memory" and "Virtual Memory" as regards the single app limit. Logic has just crashed and the associated readings are Logic Real 2.13GB Virtual 3.88GB, VSL Daemon Real 7.02MB Virtual 867MB, VSL Server 2.35GB Real 3.31 GB Virtual. ousiad (is this East West Play plug-in?) 816kb Real 2.57 GB Virtual, Vienna Ensemble 882MB Real 2.5GB Virtual. Total free memory is 20.11GB.
If someone can help my understanding this would most be welcome!
    Thanks
    Julian

"Virtual 3.88GB" - That's the one that kills your Logic app.
You can read a lot on the forums that Logic has this limit of around 3.5GB of memory that it can allocate. I want to point out two things from my experience.
    1) This limit is about the "Virtual Memory" not the "Real Memory".
    2) When you get close to that limit, Logic just crashes. You would figure that it might give you just an alert box with a memory warning, no - poof - Logic is gone.
    A few more things.
    * Keep your Activity Monitor open and be very careful when you go across the 3GB "Virtual Memory" line. Every additional Plugin could push you over the edge.
    * Besides loading additional instruments, there are other factors that you should be aware of. i.e. Apple Loop Browser. If you have a big Apple Loop library and you make a search on all loops, you can see in the Activity Monitor that such a search could require a few hundred MB of additional Virtual Memory. That's enough to cross the line and crash Logic. Believe me, it took me a while (and a lot of frustration and restarts) until I figured that out.
So why the difference between the "Real Memory" and "Virtual Memory" number. I seems that this leads into hardcore programming voodoo, aka "I have no idea". One observation I made is the impact of the graphic cards. Usually the Virtual Memory number is about 300-500MB bigger thatn the Real Memory number. When I changed my 2 graphic cards to new ones with more VRAM the difference between the Real and Virtual Memory number grew to 1GB . Don't asked me how long it took me to figure out that relation. All I saw was that I couldn't load big Logic Projects that I worked on before with no problem.
    Bottom line:
The more stuff you load into Logic, the closer you have to monitor Activity Monitor and save more frequently.
Think about how often you read forum posts that Logic is completely unstable and crashes all the time. I bet that a high percentage is related to user hitting that Virtual Memory limitation.

  • When I run activity monitor with no programs running my dock shows fluctuating usage...between 4% up to 20%.  Random figures that come and go with corresponding CPU usage.  A little help?

My activity monitor show random and fluctuating CPU usage at the Dock site with absolutelyno programs running.  %'s fluctuate between 3 - 20 and they pretty much come and go.  What might be causing this?

There's a lot of background processes running that aren't documented as Apps as such. And some of them are the Time Machine backups, Spotlight searches, all kinds of small little bits of maintenance caches, there's a lot going on. So it's not completely out of the question that this is 'normal' for a Mac. If it were 50% or more I would be concerned but if it spikes up to 20% for a second or two you are probably not in any trouble of any kind.

  • How do I locate and install Activity Monitor?

I cannot find Activity Monitor on my computer.
When and how it disappeared I do not know, but is there anyway of locating and installing a copy without a complete re-install?

"Activity Monitor" is stored on the Utilities folder, inside the Applications folder. Before reinstalling OS X, I recommend you to search it with Spotlight.
To search it in Spotlight, press Command and Space keys so, if you have a look at the top right of the display, Spotlight will appear. Then, type "Activity Monitor" without quotes, and check if the application appears. If it appears, it hasn't disappeared because you can use it. If it doesn't appear, you have to reinstall Mac OS X. Insert the Mac OS X disc, hold the C key while your computer is starting, and reinstall Mac OS X. You won't lose anything from your computer

  • Dock not showing at startup and the monitor keeps blinking

    Hello,
I've had my macbook pro for about 2 years - it's a late 2011 model. I have all the latest updates installed and the latest operating system (10.9.2).
A couple of months ago I started having some issues with it - like one of the usb's not working (had to reset SMC) and mail suddenly marking mails as unread (this solved it: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24908508#24908508).
Now, for the second time, when I startup the laptop, the dock won't show and the monitor keeps blinking and the system is very slow. When it happened for the first time I decided to shut down the mac and waited some minutes before starting it up again. The problem didn't show up again. Now, a day later, the same thing is happening. Clearly this problem is not going away. Yesterday, after the problem I went and repaired the disc's permissions, hoping it was something caused by it.
Hoping someone here can help me with this issue, please.
    Update:
So I managed to open finder and move a folder that I had previously downloaded away from the downloads folder (I read that tip from someone in a similar thread) and the dock showed up suddenly and the desktop stopped blinking.
Either way, that doesn't mean the problem won't show up again. So if anyway has any clues has to what should I be doing with my mac (do I need to rebbot it?), since lately I keep having a lot of issues with it...

Ok so now I have this problem pratically everytime I startup the laptop. I know I have to move some files around (it doesn't have to be in the downloads folder, now it happens in the desktop as well) for it to stop. But this is pretty anoying. I'm looking for a permanent solution ofr this problem. Can someone help me, please?

  • Activity Monitor not working in Yosimite

Error Message:  You can’t use this version of the application “Activity Monitor.app” with this version of OS X.

How do I get Activity Monitor to run and get the icon picture to display too.

    Heheh revjay, exactly :-D
@ Leinie: When you install any new software or updates, then it's always a good idea to repair permissions, so you will have a "clean" system afterwards.
Repairing permission also solves quite a lot of issuses with applications i.e. if they tend to hang, or crash. So this should always be one of the first things you do when something is not doing as it should on your mac.
    Glad that it works now

  • Print jobs keep starting and then error in print que

I have a HP Photosmart 100D series printer. The print jobs keep freezing up in the que. The jobs start and then after a page or two the error message appears when checking the status.
I uninstalled the printer and reinstalled
    I have download new drivers
I have run the "HP Print Doctor" it gives a message to save work, close and programs and restart the PC and then restart the ulitity. I have done this and still get the message that it cannot fix the que error.
What do you suggest as a solution to this frustrating problem?
I  have Windows 7 Professional OS

Hmm. I have an HP printer that's behaved fine, but I've moved it to my iBook (running Tiger) so I can print wirelessly.
It may be an issue with the driver or the software. I'm guessing the software was written for the PPC machines, and that might be causing the problem.
The way I've checked this is to open up "Activity Monitor" (Applications>Utilities) and find the processes related to your HP printer (usually begin with "hp") under kind what's shown?
You might want to look into the CUPS idea presented earlier as it may give you better results.

  • Activity monitor/CPU

I was just wondering what "user"s listed i should be allowed to run under activity monitor within cpu and how to locate them in a file if i want to rid the usage from my macbook..i know that's kind of vague but i know as much about computers as the next guy..

You really don't need to worry about it unless you get a runaway process and you will see that in CPU %. I normally keep mine showing All Processes to catch anything like this occurring.

  • Mac OS 10.4.11 - where is Activity Monitor?

Sorry if this is a very simple question: I want to use Activity Monitor, and it isn't in Applications/Utilities. Can't find it searching via Spotlight. Do I go to the original Tiger installation disk or does it have a new name in 10.4.11?

There are no simple questions nor answers. Was Activity Monitor there before and now is gone? If the answer is no, it must be downloaded from the disk. I believe that if you do an archive and install the upgrades will have to be done after. Remember to check disks before and after. Re-post if I did not answer, OK.

  • Activity monitor question for experts.

When I open activity monitor it is constantly changing. I have safari open, but it is there and then it isn't and then it is in activity monitor. How do I read this and is that normal?

I entered the thread because it clearly said Activity Monitor for experts and I had an AM problem please tell me where I went wrong I thought we were here to help each other not be picky about threads. If your thread was something different then maybe it should have been more specific I just needed help and there was an opening that seemed to refer to my problem. I don't spend half my life here as you seem to do judging by your posts, let's just be nice to people who need help.
In order to help people, they should understand the purpose of these boards.
Had you read the OP's post, you would see that his Activity Monitor is working and his question was simply why Safari appears and disappears from the AM window.
Your issue is entirely different and that is why I suggested starting a new thread with your particular problem/issue which has nothing to do with Safari in the Activity Monitor.
Perhaps the term "hijacking a thread" seems rash to you, but it is a common expression with no personal attachment to it. It merely means that someone has used another poster's thread to pose a completely different topic.
To best get help on this or any technical board, first search for instances of your particular issue, which may have already been solved, and if you do not find such a topic, start a new thread with the Subject describing your issue.
Once people start responding to other posts in a thread, nobody any longer knows who is answering whom.
It is always preferable to start a new topic if you want a quick solution to a problem, rather than bury it in another person's thread. It's called "Netiquette" and it is not my invention. It's been around as long as the net has been around AFAIK.
