Add Application level Search Capability

Hello All,
Is there any APEX out of the box search capability? I want to be able to create a search box and enter a keyword like kids and it searches all of my tables and brings back the results in a report? I have found Oracle text, but wanted to know if there is any other options? I was thinking about creating a query with all of the tables in it and do it that way, but that will be very complicated and would have to upkeep it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mary

I think you need an index per table. As far as your search is concerned I see the possibility to create some kind of a dynamic query. Let me see if I can make something for you.

  • "Product Search" capability in "Sample Application"

    i have just started reviewing the HTML DB product and its rad capabilities.
    the "Customer Search" capability is were my interest lies at this time and i am really confused...
    as to how it works and how i could go into the "Sample Application" and modify it for a similar...
    "Product Search" capability.
    can you provide any assistance to me on this matter ?
    i had thought that it could be in the user guide somewhere...
    but i am only up to page 75 or so and getting impatient/excited.
    Thanks in advance.

    Note: raj gave me the following info:
    hey robert--
    if you look at the definition for the two pages you've asked about, 1 and 400, you'll see that page 1 just branches to page 400 after the user submits the page. while the page is being submitted, though, page 1 sets the value of G_CUSTOMER_NAME to whatever was entered for P1_SEARCH. the query region on page 400 simply includes that G_CUSTOMER_NAME predicated in its where clause. there's a simpler but similar example of this in our how-to docs...

    ...specifically at...
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/htmldb/howtos/dynamic_report.html
    ...and, you can even simplify that example a little more by using sql instead of a pl/sql function returning that sql. so the sql version could look like...
    select p.category,
    p.product_name,
    i.quantity,
    i.unit_price
    from demo_product_info p,
    demo_order_items i
    where p.product_id = i.product_id
    and p.category = :p600_show or :p600_show = 'ALL'

  • Paging from DB level or Application level .

    Hi All,
    Just wonder if anyone if you guys can give me some ideas no implementation of paging. How would normally paging be done? To be more exact, my question is referring that the paging should be done :
    1. SQL Level
    Here the retrieval of records are queried into block of record. ie: within
    range of 1-10, 11-20. There will be likely multiple hit to DB.
    2. Application level(jsp)
    Here the retrieval of records are queried from one SQL stmt. ie:
    select * from table where name = '';
    Then if it returns more 10 rows, paging is done at application level.
    The first option will reduce the network usage in terms of bandwidth.
    Kindly advice asap.
    And appreciate if u can give me any good links for reading
    Thanks.

    It also depends on whether the data retrieved must be consistent. For example, I issue a search for records. The search completes and I receive the first page of results. I navigate to the second page. A user subsequently adds a new record that would have displayed on the first page.
    So what should happen if I hit 'back'?
    Option 1 is that I use database pagination methods. In this case, I will see the new record when I hit 'back'.
    Option 2 is that I cache the results in memory (if the result set is small) or to the filesystem (if the result set is large). In this case, I will see the same page as before.Neither implementation is 'right'. It depends on the behavior that is required. Reports, for example, probably should not use method 1. However, searches probably do not need the snapshot produced by method 2.
    If you do want to save the snapshot, be sure to consider serializing it to the filesystem. I normally create one file per page and populate the data there directly. The files are named [session_id]-[page number]. However, you have a considerable amount of freedom in how you approach this.

  • How do I clear application level item of the last value it held?

    See next post - I oopsed the first try.
    Edited by: user3034406 on Jul 28, 2009 1:48 PM

    Using oracle 11g, apex version 3.0.
    Ok, so I am developing a survey with questions and their related answers (either radio group or checkbox depending). I have it set up so that when a user clicks a checkbox, an apex_collection is updated. In the pl/sql of my region source, I left outer join to this collection to display the checkbox as checked when its value is found in the collection. Using this same strategy, I can delete a value from the collection when a user uncheckes a box....
    The problem I am having is this: the very last value that a user checks initially (i.e. takes checkbox from unchecked to checked status) is staying in my application level item :ADD_THIS, so when the page is refreshed or whatever, this value gets added to my collection, which means it shows as checked. Well, I think this is what is happenig...!
    I have tried setting the app level item to null in a computation process, but this screwed everything up and nothing would work right....
    So, if someone knows when, how and where to reset an app level item?
    NOTE: I barely know javascript (getting the hang of simple stuff but I have a long way to go!) and am a little shaky on things like session state, before load, after load, etc., etc, when it comes to apex. Please be patient with me! (smile)

  • How to keep an application level object running with SunIDM?

    We are working on intergrate a gmail project with SunIDM. We need an application level object running with SunIDM so it will maintain a token generated from Gmail side. In anther servlet project, I had this object saved in the attribute of the ServletContext, then other session level servlet could share this attribute anytime. Is there a way to store attribute in Servlet Context and have it shared by different user session in SunIDM? I have been reading documents and searched this forum, haven't find any topics related how to maintain an application level object live. Hopefully that I can get some hint here.
    Thank you so much.

    Paul, Thank you so much for the further explaination. I don't think it will work since the token generated from gmail will expire every 24 hours.
    We are using the gdata library published from by gmail people, and I create a new UserService object and have it run in the application level. The UserService object will generate a token and renew it every 24 hours behind the scene. Here is how I implement it in my Servlet project:
    //to have a UserService object running at the application level:
    public class GmailUserService extends HttpServlet {
    public void init(ServletConfig config) throws ServletException{
    super.init();
    userService = new UserService(myApplication);
    config.getServletContext().setAttribute("gmailUserService", userService);
    //to access this UserService object from other servlet in each user session:
    UserService userService = (UserService)servletContext.getAttribute("gmailUserService");
    Gmail will trigger an error if we create a new UserService object for each user. They recommend to have all the user to share one UserService object. I am looking for similar approach in SunIDM.
    Thank you again, Paul, for trying to help.

  • Setting application level item during authentication

    We’re having an issue with an application level item that we set during our custom authentication function to store a role list for authorization. The issue is that the application level item, which should be set using htmldb_util.set_session_state(‘ITEM_NAME’, p_item_value), is not being set.
    On further investigation we realised that this issue was only affecting developers, not users of the application. This seems to be because the home page link, set in Shared Components > Edit Security Attributes, is set to “f?p=&APP_ID.:1:&SESSION.”, which means that the developers session was being passed to the application when the “Run Application” button was pressed. What then happens is that following the successful execution of the authentication function, a new session id is generated and visible on the URL and the Application Level Items are not set correctly.
    Examples:
    I’m developing an application on Apex that has the home page link set to “f?p=&APP_ID.:1:&SESSION.”, here’s the first part of my URL at the Application home page:
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=4000:1:1065658352862710::
    I hit “Run Application” and get to this URL (note the session id is the same)
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=16033:1:1065658352862710:::::
    I log in using any old username and password (the auth scheme on this demo app always returns true) and I get to this URL (note the session id is different):
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=16033:1:1403999736046638
    My application level item is not set and I start to cry. When I recover from my tearful episode I try to log in again, I hit logout and get taken to this URL:
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=16033:1
    I log in again (with the same username or different, it doesn’t matter) and low and behold, my application level item is set ok. This is the URL I can see (note another new session id):
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=16033:1:4917752800353335
    In despair, I close my browser window and go to my other application, this one has got the home page link set to “f?p=&APP_ID.:1” (no session id passed).
    I log back into Apex as a developer and go to the application home page at this URL:
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=4000:1:131988631742187::
    I hit “Run Application” and get to this URL (note the session id is missing):
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=19114:1::::::
    I log in using any old username and password (same deal as before) and I get to this URL (new session id):
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=19114:1:4320851658879093:::::
    Amazingly, this time the application level items are set first time.
    What I’d like to know (there is a purpose to this) is:
    - Why is a different session allocated to the application after login, when a “developer’s” session id is passed to the application?
    - If I remove the session id from the home page url what is the impact? I can’t think of anywhere within the application that this is used (other than between page 101 and the home page), but our thoughts are that this could mean that users end up generating more sessions on the server.
    - Is there any other way around this, perhaps using a different method of setting the application level item? The authentication procedure which sets the item reads as follows and mimics our authentication procedure (which you can assume does a little bit more than just returning true):
    function test_login
      (p_username in varchar2 default null,
      p_password in varchar2 default null) return boolean is
    begin
      htmldb_util.set_session_state('F16929_SYSDATE', to_char(sysdate, 'DAY'));
      return true;
    end;- Has anyone else encountered difficulties with the setting of application level items during login or has anyone come up with a more ingenious plan for passing something back from authentication that can later be used for authorisation?
    Thanks
    matt

    Scott,
    Many thanks for the response.
    We've found a way around this now, by changing the developer's usernames to the same as their NT/ Active Directory signon, which fools APEX into maintaining the session id from their builder session even though when logging into the application they get authenticated by LDAP.
    Using a post authentication process would be ok but I can't see any way of passing a variable retrieved in the authentication process under the first session to the post authentication process so that it can be set in the second session. We'd either therefore have to insert the data into a table and read it back or add an extra LDAP call to retrieve the user role/ group list during the post authentication process.
    Thanks again,
    Matt

  • Tuxedo calls procedure and Application Level Service Failure

    hello ,professors all!
    My Tuxedo Service just call an procedure exists in oracle9i, i am sure that the procedure runs ok in oracle9i individually, when it was called by my tuxedo service , it is not ok by first time ,and runs out tp application level Service failure error .But strangely it is ok by second time!
    who can explan it to me and show me a way to solve the difficult problem?
    i spend a lot time wondering the answer!
    Edited by: user9086437 on 2010-9-29 下午9:57

    There are many possible reasons why a database procedure might fail the first time it is executed and succeed after that.
    You should check the Tuxedo ULOG and Oracle database logs for any messages that may point to the problem.
    If there is a LIBTUX_CAT:6205 or LIBTUX_CAT:6206 message in the userlog file then you need to add a tx_open() call to your server's tpsvrinit() or tpsvrthrinit() function.
    If there is an OPENINFO string for the group where your server is running then you are using XA transaction management and should not be connecting to the database in your application code; if there is not an OPENINFO string for the group where your server is running then you need to connect to the database in your application.
    If you set the environment variable
    TMTRACE=*:ulog:dye
    for the server where the failure is happening then Tuxedo will write a trace record of each Tuxedo call and each XA call to the ULOG file. This can be helpful in determining why the failure is happening on the first call, especially if Tuxedo is handling transaction management using XA.
    I hope some of this is of help in debugging the problem.

  • How to Modify Font Size at Application Level

    There is a requirement to change the font size at the application level for ease of readability. Is there an easy way to accomplish this requirement in APEX 3.0?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.
    ~Phyllis

    Ah, alright so then the font does not have to change size on request?
    You just want to increase the font size of a report or form?
    If you just want to increase the font size of everything, you can add this to your Page's header...
    <style type="text/css">
    * {font-size:20px;}
    </style>If you just want to change the font-size of something in particular, then you'll have to get the CSS it refers to (use Firebug in Firefox).
    For example, to change some headers and data in template 15...
    <style type="text/css">
    .t15RegionHeader
    font-size:12px;
    tr td.t15data
    font-family:verdana;
    font-size:10px;
    white-space:nowrap;
    th.t15header
    font-family:verdana;
    font-size:10px;
    color: #efefef;
    </style>Hope this helps.

    how to get local information ,not global information ?
    thinks!!!
    Edited by: 998527 on 2013-4-7 上午7:27

    See the TA_FLAGS in the docs;
    TA_FLAGS
    Long valued FML32 field identifying generic and component MIB specific flag values. Component MIB specific values that may be set in this attribute are defined within each component MIB reference page. Generic flag values and uses are listed below.
    MIB_LOCAL
    This flag is used to modify retrievals from certain classes defined in this MIB. For a number of classes in this MIB, there exists both global information (available at any site in an active application) and local information (available on the particular site where the object is active). Requests to retrieve information from these classes will by default retrieve only the global information and not the local for efficiency. If the application user is willing to wait for local information to be collected, possibly from multiple sites, this flag should be set on the retrieval request. Classes with local information have local attributes listed last in the attribute table with a subheading indicating that they are local attributes. Classes which have only local information will automatically default to retrieving local information even if this flag value is not set.
    MIB_PREIMAGE
    indicates that a pre-image check must be passed before a SET operation will be performed. A pre-image check insures that occurrence 0 of any MIB specific class attributes match the existing object. If so, the object is updated using occurrence 1 of any MIB specific class attributes. Attributes occurring less than two times are not considered for pre-image checking. Multiply occurring fields are checked if their associated count attribute is specified twice.
    MIB_SELF
    This flag is used as a shorthand to indicate that identification attributes for the client or server originating the request should be added to the request buffer prior to processing. For clients, TA_CLIENTID is added and for servers, TA_GRPNO and TA_SRVID are added.

  • Application Level Function for Conditional Display

    I need to hide a field on Print Preview if it is null. I currently have the following PL/SQL Expression Condition:
    :P305_DEPT IS NOT NULL AND v('PRINTER_FRIENDLY') <> 'YES'
    It works great; now I need to do this for a lot more fields within my application. Is there a way to call a PL/SQL process defined in HTML DB, passing it the current item value, or some other way to save myself some typing?
    I've tried various combinations of shortcuts, substitution strings, application processes, etc. and can't seem to get the right combination.
    I'm hoping you have a cool solution, or some other ideas I can try out.
    Thanks!
    Chaunaci

    Hi Raj,
    All of this came up because we have several data items displayed above each report page, which allow the user to enter filter criteria. When the page is displayed in Print Friendly mode, the Select Lists display as blanks when null, but Text Boxes display as [] when null.
    Our QAs have asked us to make all of the filter fields consistent in appearance in Print Friendly mode. The work-around solution is to hide the filter fields that are null when in Print Friendly mode. Therefore, we came up with the following PL/SQL Expression to use in the Conditional Display:
    :P305_DEPT IS NOT NULL AND v('PRINTER_FRIENDLY') <> 'YES'
    Because I will need to add the above conditional statement to many items, I was hoping to create and call an HTML DB application-level process and pass the current item value in, so my conditional display logic would look something like...
    HIDE_NULL_ON_PRINT(:P305_DEPT).
    When I was doing some additional testing last night, I realized my boolean logic needed to be tweaked, and it would be nice to tweak it in just one place, rather than on every field's conditional display.
    I currently have it working by putting the IS NOT NULL AND v('PRINTER_FRIENDLY') <> 'YES' into an application substitution string, so my conditional logic shows as:
    :P305_DEPT &HIDE_NULL_FOR_PRINT.
    In trying to determine if this was the best solution, I need answers to the following issues:
    1. Is there a way to generically reference the current item in the conditional display logic? I currently type in the specific item name (ex: :P305_DEPT), but it would be nice if instead I could just say &CURRENT_ITEM_NAME. (or something similar).
    2. Can I create an application-level process, pass a parameter into it (the current item), and have it return a value that can be evaluated by my conditional logic display?
    Thanks so much for your quick responses to this and all my previous posts. It is wonderful to be able to post a problem at the end of the day, and come in to a solution in the morning!

  • Managed path for host named site collection is farm level or web application level?

    Hi,
    I would like to get advice.
    I created a webapplication for host named site collections.
    these are my host named site collections (except http://sp2013) under my webapplication
    Root Site Collection: http://sp2013
    Site Collection: portal1.sg
    Site Collection: portal1.sg/research
    Site Collection: portal1.sg/intranet
    research and intranet managed paths are farm level
    all my host named site collection will be accessed by http and https except "intranet" site collection will be only accessed by https
    so I changed the Intranet zone for site collection using Set-SPSiteUrl
    Set-SPSiteUrl (Get-SPSite "http://portal1.sg") -Url "https://portal1.sg" -Zone Intranet
    Set-SPSiteUrl (Get-SPSite "http://portal1.sg/research") -Url "https://portal1.sg" -Zone Intranet
    Set-SPSiteUrl (Get-SPSite "http://portal1.sg/intranet") -Url "https://portal1.sg/intranet" -Zone Intranet
    Now I need to create "search" site collection for "Enterprice Search Center"
    My question is that for the "search" managed path ... should i use farm level or web application level?
    "search" site collection will be will be accessed with both http and https also.
    Thanks a lot!

    managed path for HNSC is farm level and u can have 20 managed path
    while managed path for path based is 20 per web application in your case if you are going to have a a separate web application for search then u will use web app

  • Site Collection level Search Scopes after Upgraded to 2013

    In SharePoint 2010 we have  good amount of site collection level search scopes and it has been heavily used in search scope down.
    Please correct me if any of my below statement is wrong
    1.After migration these scopes cannot be used and it will not appear in search drop down.
    2.Only opition I have is to create Result Source and Configure search navigation at Site Level?
    3.For Result Sources to appear in drop down I need to have individual search page for every custom result source.
    I would really appreciate your inputs
    Thank you
    Vijay

    1. Usually 2010 Search Scopes can be used after migrating to 2013.  What you can't do is edit them or create new ones.  However, I've had mixed luck with them.  About 75% seem to work, with the rest being broken beyond repair.
    2. If the migrated scope doesn't continue to work your only real option is a REsult Source.  To add them to the dropdown you will need to configure the navigation at the Site level.
    3. Result sources can re-use result pages used by other Result sources.  You need a Result source for each entry, but that result source may point to the same page as another result source.
