Add colour background to paragraph styles menus

I find the ability to colour menus on Indesign CS4 really useful - it may have been on previous versions, but I have just discovered it. But what I would really like is the ability to colour paragraph styles. I work on a couple of magazines and have 30+ paragraph styles per magazine. The list of styles in text form is good, but if I could colour code them it would be even better, since I could highlight different sections of the magazine by colour and find them faster.
If this could be done, presumably it would be from the Paragraph Styles Options box.
Of course, it may already be possible and I just haven't found out how, in which case I'm sure someone will let me know.

Hi, Loic!
Why not?
Make a new paragraph style in the UI with your custom bullet and test it yourself in the ESTK:
_paraStyle.bulletChar.properties.toSource();
that will give you (all r/w):
characterValue:
bulletsFont:
bulletsFontStyle:
_paraStyle.bulletChar.characterType //(r/w)
that will give you alternatively:
BulletCharacterType.UNICODE_ONLY
BulletCharacterType.UNICODE_WITH_FONT
BulletCharacterType.GLYPH_WITH_FONT

  • Add an Image in Paragraph style

    Hi all,
    I've a big problem without answer yet:
    I need to add an Image (linked file) as drop cap of a paragraph, or in alternative and maybe more easy, use that linked file as point of a list.
    I've see that i can customize dots of list, but u can use only Gliphs of fonts, insteand i want use a little linked file.
    For example i need something like that:
       Any text any text any text any text
           any text any text any text any text
       Any text any text any text any text
           any text any text any text any text
    I need that if i set the paragraph on "Any text", the linked image must be placed.
    There is a way in InDesign CS5 to make something like that?
    Sorry for my bad english, if u need some explain tell me.
    Thanks to all

    Hi Peter,
    So thx for your answer, it'll be so usefull.
    I think i'll make some experiment with GREP-Find, it's look so usefull too.

  • How to save "Paragraph style" to be default?

    Hi.
    I try to add to my profile Paragraph style, so every time I use this profile, I'll have this style ready to use. but it seems "New document" ignore the styles I added before save..
    Is there any way user can apply style on AI as whole, and not per job?
    Thnx

    Ohh... I saved my profiles at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CC (64 Bit)\Support Files\Required\New Document Profiles\en_US
    and i wondered why its not working
    Thank you!

  • Multiple Paragraph Styles / "Add-On" Styles

    Not exactly sure how to clearly describe what I'm after but I'd love to see if Adobe could incorporate this feature.
    I'd love to have an "add on" style where I could apply a paragraph style and any number of "add on" paragraph styles to it.
    For example, say I have three different styles and I need to have the same styles but with a different size. That would require me creating six styles. I'd love to be able to set a style and then an "add on style" for the size, which would reduce the number of styles I had to define, so in this case, the three styles and a fourth "add on style" for the size.
    In some cases like the one above I can use character styles but in a specific document I'm after I have several different paragraph styles requiring different "space after" amounts and I have to define many styles than I'd ideally like. Also it would be useful to be able to just click into the paragraph and add "add-on" styles to it.
    Your thoughts?
    R

    For me more important would be the user defined grid unit which could be used as the unit in defining interline, space before, space after etc.
    For example You have the layout based on interline baseline grid equal to 14 pt. So every space before, space after etc. you define as the part of you grid, for example 14/2 pt or 14/3 pt ect.
    When you decide to change inteline grid form 14 pt to 13.5 pt you must change every space after, and every interline etc. manually.
    If you will have the a gid unit and ability  to define interline and spacing as a part or as a multiplication of the grid unit it would be only one shot to change all layout.

  • Need to add a carriage return in Paragraph styles

    Hi. I am in a muddle. I have a large amount of data from an xml source. I need to quickly add carriage returns appropriately throughout it so that the paragraph styles can be differentiated.I am using tags manually mapped to styles to do this.
    In order to carriage returns am I right in thinking that I can add a GREP style to each para style, and that it will sense the end of the para through the end marker position of each tag? If this is so, what would the GREP expressionlook like to that I can automate locating the end of a tag/para style so that I can add ~b to it?
    Gratefully!

    Hi @chantal_diva arts,
    It seems to be difficult, because you have much more invinsible character than only the xml markers in your document.
    I think one good way could be @obi-wan Kenobis way.
    Perhaps you can upload an example idml on a file hoster of your choise (e.g. xup.in).
    Regardless, you can try the following:
    1. text search:
    <FEFF>
    replace with:
    2. grep search:
    (?<=\b##)(.)
    replace with:
    \r$1
    3. clean document
    grep search:
    #+
    replace with:
    (nothing)  an empty replace field

  • Defining a background color for a paragraph style

    Hello and please excuse this very basic question, but I am completely stumped.
    How do I simply define a background color for a paragraph style? I cannot use a table etc. because the styles are mapped during an XML conversion. Code lines should receive a gray background box to separate them from the text.
    Also, is there a way to force line breaks whithin words for a specific style? The text, formated in Courier, should just fill the space with a fixed width per character and break wherever the line ends.

    With some drawbacks it's doable using two paragraph tags.
    The first tag, e.g. "Line" is empty (no text), and it has a reference page graphic that's just a rectangle filled 100% with color and set to have a percentage tint so that the text will "show through" it.
    "Line" is also set to have a negative space below it, e.g. -12 points.
    "Code" paratag has the actual code text in it, and it's set to have a negative space above, e.g. -12 points.
    I've done projects where I have multiple Line paratags differing by the number of code lines needing to be shaded, e.g. Line1, Line2, Line3.
    Unfortunately there isn't a way to automatically have the line expand to the correct depth of the Code paragraph, although I believe this would probably be something that could be done as a Framescript, to run through a document and create new "line" paratags of the correct depth depending on how many Code paragraphs or lines are in the following paratag.

  • I cannot find the "Add Paragraph Style" option in the TOC inspector

    The Help Center under "Customize the table of contents" indicates that I can add a paragraph style to the TOC items list. However, when I follow the instructions on the help screen and click the "Add" pop-up menu, I can only add back one of the sections I have already removed. There is no option to add a paragraph style.

    For that choice to show, I believe it depends on which template (with which TOC type) you've selected. Some provide it and some don't.
    Create a new book and choose the 'Modern Type' template, then complete the same steps and you should be able to see what Help is referring to.

    You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • Coloured background behind text area

    Hi all,
    Does anyone know how to make a coloured background behind the text area. For example, like the yellow title "Apple biometric earpods..." in the webpage; Apple biometric Earpods just a hoax, 'simply made up' for fun - Tech2
    I have lots of titles in a document that I want to apply this style to so dont want to do it by drawing lots of boxes.
    I have got a bit of a work around where you use an underline, and go into underline options and make it really wide and give it a negative offset so it is in the middle of the text but this is hard to control the gap so you have to add a space to the star and end of each sentence.
    is there a better way?
    thanks,

    Nope, that's how it's done. Turn on the custom underline as part of the paragraph style.

  • Quick paragraph style application transformation ... or reverse engineering a document the hard way?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm using Indesign 5.5 for Windows and have inherited a technical document with no styling applied (not even text threads or auto-pagination), but all the fonts are in the correct sizes and colours. So it looks ok in print, but trying to actually do anything with it is a nightmare.  For obvious reasons I WANT to apply paragraph styles to the document so I can generate a new auto-updating TOC, maintain and add to it, and all the other good stuff that means.
    My question is this - is my only choice to go through page by page and apply new styles (matching their current appearence) to every different heading and bullet point, or is there a nice easy way (or script) that i can use to whizz through the document for me, neatly applying a new style to each different font variety or element it finds (not altering their appearence) and leaving me with a nice list of styles I can rename (then take all the credit for? ha!) Basically take a document that's already been put together wrong, and make it right? I think this might've been imported into InDesign from something like Quark, hence the state it's in, but I don't have access to anything but this version. Any help you could offer would be great.  Oh, and if (as I suspect) my only option is indeed to apply all the styles manually one line at a time, then feel free to point and laugh, I doubtless deserve it.
    Thanks!
    Phil

    If you need to reproduce the existing page layouts, I'd suggest you read up more on what paragraph styles can do, before annihilating whatever layout and flow behaviors have been stuck on the content. For example, if level "X" headings always start at the top of a text frame, or top of a page, or even top of a right page, or top of a left page, a paragraph style property can do this. So you'd want to create and apply a paragraph that does this to those paragraphs before you thread text frames; the top of <whatever> frame paragraph property will keep the paragraphs in place.
    It is possible to create paragraph styles with properties that behave crazily when they do what you define for them. For example, you can define a paragraph style that sets the style of the paragraph that's created when you press Enter/Return. You can also use the smartness built into the Next Style property. If a paragraph style, say Head1 is defined to create a new paragraph when you press Enter/Return, it can also apply its next style property to the paragraph follows Head1 in the same text selection. So, if you select a paragraph that's supposed to become Head1 (which defines its next style as BodyAfterHead1) and also select the paragraph that follows it,  and then hold down Ctrl+Click on the Head1 style's name in the Paragraph Styles panel, Apply "Head1" then Next Style appears. If BodyAfterHead1 defines Body as its next style, and more than two consecutive paragraphs are selected, Head1 will be applied to the first paragraph, BodyAfterHead1 will be applied to the second paragraph, and Body will be applied to the third and following paragraphs.
    So, you'll be investing in setting up the Next Style property for paragraph styles, and selecting as many consecutive paragraphs as needed for applying a pattern of styles that agrees with your next style definitions. Each time you use this feature, you're collecting benefits from your investment.
    If you need to reproduce the look of the layout on some number of pages, you could export to PDF and use a script to efficiently place each page of a multi-page PDF on a "PDF layer" you create, that appears on every document page in the ID document, lock and move the layer below the active document layer, and use it as a placement underlay.
    Search Google for terms like "InDesign apply style and next style," "InDesign place multipage pdf script," "InDesign installing and using scripts," "InDesign paragraph style keep options," and "InDesign start paragraph options," without quotes, for informative links to anywhere on the Web, as well as on these Adobe forums. To limit the searches to Adobe forums only, include "forums.adobe" without quotes in the search query.

  • JS Accessing the Paragraph Styles Panel Menu?? PLEASE HELP!

    I haven't heard anything yet about this topic, can anyone help me?
    Hi all,
    I'm hoping you can help me with is, I'm about to tear my hair out! I'm using JavaScript in InDesign CS3 (PC). I have three heading scripts that I wrote that go through a series of actions when clicked, and I need to be be attached to the appropriate paragraph styles. This is so the user will receive a certain look and feel when they click the style, but they won't know a script ran at all, they'll think it's just another paragraph style.
    I ran the menu id script from the InDesign Scripting Guide, and it says that the root ID should be "Paragraph Style Panel Menu", however, that is not working. HELP! How can I get InDesign to reference the existing Paragraph Style Panel Menu?
    THANK YOU! Code below:
    myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var setpath = "~/Application Data/Adobe/InDesign/Version 5.0/Scripts/Scripts Panel/";
    var myScript1 = new File(setpath + "Heading 1.jsx");
    var myScriptAction1 = app.scriptMenuActions.add("InD - Heading 1");
    var myEventListener1 = myScriptAction1.eventListeners.add("onInvoke", myScript1, false);
    var myScript2 = new File(setpath + "Heading 2.jsx");
    var myScriptAction2 = app.scriptMenuActions.add("InD - Heading 2");
    var myEventListener2 = myScriptAction2.eventListeners.add("onInvoke", myScript2, false);
    var myScript3 = new File(setpath + "Heading 3.jsx");
    var myScriptAction3 = app.scriptMenuActions.add("InD - Heading 3");
    var myEventListener3 = myScriptAction3.eventListeners.add("onInvoke", myScript3, false);
    try{
    var myScriptMenu = app.menus.item("$ID/Paragraph Style Panel Menu");
    myScriptMenu.title;
    catch (myError){
    var myScriptMenu = app.menus.add("$ID/Paragraph Style Panel Menu");
    var myScriptMenuItem1 = myScriptMenu.menuItems.add(myScriptAction1);
    var myScriptMenuItem2 = myScriptMenu.menuItems.add(myScriptAction2);
    var myScriptMenuItem3 = myScriptMenu.menuItems.add(myScriptAction3);

  • Problem changing and creating paragraph styles in Pages

    When using paragraph styles I come up against several problems that I haven't been able to figure out with the help menu:
    1. When I change a para with the style list it doesn't change the para to the chosen parameters. It changes for instance the font but not the size. How do I make sure that the chosen text gets changed completely?
    2. When I want to create a new style from selection it does not create a style that turns up in future lists. I only get to choose what is already somewhere in the text I am writing and what seems to be a default list that shows up with every new document. To change to something else I have to find a text that has the format I want, copy a piece of it, put it into the text I am working on and then try and change the paragraph style. How can I make sure that I have the styles I want at my disposal whatever I am working on? Can I somehow edit the choices in the style drawer?
    3. When looking at the help menu, this is the beginning of an instruction:
    +To apply a style to one or more paragraphs, select the paragraphs you want to change, or select an entire text box, table, table cell, or shape that contains text. Click the Paragraph Styles button in the format bar, and then choose the style you want to apply+
    Now, where do I find the paragraph styles button and where is the format bar? I clicked my way through numerous drop down menus but haven't found what this is referring to.
    Would be grateful for any hints, and please keep your explanations simple enough. I need instructions for dummies Thanks in advance!

    Double click on the style name in the styles drawer to completely force the style onto the selected text. This will however eliminate any bolding, italics, underlining etc.

    To add a style to the Styles Drawer, format your text, then click on the little red triangle next to the style in the drawer and choose New from selection giving it a name.
    You can also change the name of the style by right clicking on the name and selecting Rename. This is not always available as some names are reserved.
    Each document has its own definitions of the styles. You can import Styles from other documents:
    +Menu > Format > Import Styles… > Browse to a document with the styles and select those you want to copy over+
    3. When looking at the help menu, this is the beginning of an instruction:

    Now, where do I find the paragraph styles button
    It is the reversed blue P on the Toolbar, also +Menu > View > Show Styles Drawer+
    and where is the format bar?
    I assume you are referring to the toolbar at the top of the window.
    I clicked my way through numerous drop down menus but haven't found what this is referring to.

  • CSS in tables - background and paragraphs [was: need help]

    Hi there,
    I'm using Dreamweaver CS3 and i'm trying to add a background image to a cell. I'm using CSS which works, but that also adds parts of the background to other cells. The only way i can do it sucessfully is by going "properties" then "bg", but i would rather use CSS because i want my page valid with W3C. Is there an easy way to do this?
    I also have a problem with paragraph spacing. If i align text to the top of a cell with paragraphs, the area above the whole text moves down one line in a broswer, if i have no paragraphs then it will look exactly the same as in dreamweaver. Is this normal or is there anyway to prevent it happening?.
    Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

    Paragraphs have a default top margin. You need to remove or adjust the margin with your CSS:
    td p {
      margin-top: 0;
    Awesome! Worked right away, this has been driving me nuts for ages, thanks a lot.
    In code view, you can use CSS to style a single table cell like so.
    HTML:
    <table>
         <tr>
              <td style="background: url(some_image.jpg) no-repeat">
              styled table cell here here </td>
              <td>unstyled table cell here </td>
         </tr>
    </table>
    I'm not too sure where to place this code, what does "styled and unstyled table cell" mean?
    I'm not that great when it comes to codes, any help would be grealty appreciated, thanks.
