Add "Open With" program

I want to be able to open a file type (.dspDisc) in two different programs (DVD Studio Pro, and Smultron), however, I don't know how to add Smultron to the "open with" pop up box (when I right click).
I can say "always open with Smultron," and then I can right click and choose DVD Studio Pro, but I want it to "always open with DVD Studio Pro" with the option to "open with Smultron."
Is there a way to add Smultron to the Open With options? Currently, DVD Studio Pro is the only option in the "open with."
Matthew

When the system boots up one of the things it does is take a look at the installed applications and consult the info.plist inside the application to see what file types the application claims to open. This information is then cached and Finder consults this when constructing the "Open with" list. You can over-ride the default by selecting a file and then select the application you want to use to open that file, or even all files of that file type. Your over-ride selection is then stored in your home Library Preferences folder in this file:
"/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist"
Finder consults that list as well as the list generated by the system. You can add an application as the default to your personal list, and it will appear as the default to open the file, even though its own info.plist does not claim to be able to open the file type. It will then appear in the Open With list as the default application, and other applications will appear as alternatives.
It sounds like the source of your problem is that the info.plist inside Smultron does not claim to be able to open files of the type .dspDisc--so while you can assign it open those files and it will then appear as the default, by being added to your personal over-ride list, it won't appear at all if you choose the "normal" application as the default.
If you are good at hacking you could modify the Smultron info.plist to add the file type to its list of things it will open. Otherwise the best course is to just launch it and drag the occasional file you want it to open to the Smultron icon on the Dock.

  • I have been unable to get Photoshop Elements 11 to show in my Open With Programs

I have been unable to get Photoshop Elements 11 to show in my Open With Programs list. The program is installed but will not show in Open With programs.

    Hi,
You don't say which operating system you are using so I'll assume Windows 7 for now - try this.
    1) select the file that you want to open
    2) right click on it and go to the Open With option but select Choose default program at the bottom of the list - the following should open
    3) At the bottom of the list, there is Other Programs, you may need to scroll down. If PSE not in the list, continue with the following.
    4) Use the Browse button to browse to the following (omit x86 if on 32bit system)
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 11\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe"
I'm assuming that you want to open the image in the editor.
    5) Uncheck the Always use... option, otherwise double clicking on the file would cause the editor to open by default.
    6) Click on OK
PSE should now appear on your open with list.
    Good luck

  • Open With Program I Want Grayed Out.

I am a Right Click iMac user and normally I right click on a media file that sits on the desk top I get a selection of what programs I can open the file with.
I like this becuase I don't always want to open it with the default program.  The problem is the program I want to open the file with (Open With...) does not pop up on the list so I have to select "Other". Then I get a much bigger list of which is the one I am looking for which is Grayed Out.
I can select "All Applications" and it does un-gray it for this one time, but I wish to add this program as a permanant one that appears on the list without having to select "Others".

    Hope this helps.

I presume you only want certain individual files to be opened by a particular program? e.g. You don't want all .MP4 audio files to open in iTunes for instance...
Seems when you right click on the file and choose "Open With..." "Other..." you select the program you want to open that file with and select the checkbox to "Always open with..."
That file (and only that file) will now be opened by the program you have selected.
Worked on my iMac running 10.6.8

  • Possible to add "Open With " option to Spotlight?

When I do a search in Spotlight, it brings up a list of files. I do show all, then right click on an item. It shows "open"... "get info"... "reveal in finder"... etc. Is there a way to add an "open with" option, lets say with a plugin or shareware of some sort? Word documents always default to the Microsoft Office Test Drive program, which I do not intend to buy. I want these to default to an older version of Office I have, but it can't be done in Spotlight, and even in "get info", I cannot make a permanent change to have Word documents open with a prior version of Office.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Matt, is there any reason to keep the Test Drive installed on your machine? If you remove that then I'd think the documents would open with the older version once again.
As far as your actual question goes, I don't know of any way to add an 'open with' function, but on the other hand I don't know my way around Spotlight all that well -

  • How to Change Default 'Open with' Program

Right now my default pdf viewer is epdfview. When I click on a downloaded file in the 'Downloads' it opens using epdfview. How can I make AcrobatReader default for this action?
What I am NOT writing about: I don't want to change the Action what happens, when I click on a pdf file, because this Action is 'preview in Firefox' right now. I would like to change the associated DEAFULT program, which opens a DOWNLOADED file.
I know how to choose 'Other...' programs in the 'Open with...' dialogue, I want to see AcrobatReader as a DEAFULT in the 'Open with...' dialogue.

  • Push default open with program to server users

    Hi All,
We have just upgraded to 10.9 server in an effort to speed up file operations to our Synology NAS.
Our users have to fill out some PDF forms and I need to force .pdf's to open with Adobe Reader.
Using profile manager, I have tried to push custom settings into the com.apple.LaunchServices.plist without any success.
I can log into everyones account and change it manually, however I'm sure this will be of value to the community.

  • "Open with Program"

Does anyone know how to delete icons that are no longer in use for “open the program with“?  The usual way of right clicking and deleting the associated icon does not seem to work.  I have several programs I uninstalled are still around whenever I search for a file association.

  • 10.6. - file information window - 'open with' (program) can't be adjusted?

    Hello,
just installed Snow Leopard (German version) , nice overall!
... but I am missing a handy feature. Maybe it has been moved somewhere else?
Usually when you click Cmd-I at a file to display it's information window you can adjust with which program that (and optional) other files of that kind should be opened.
I can only see the set program, but not where I can change it...
Maybe somebody has a hint for me?
    thanks,bye

today, after I had switched off my Mac over night and started it this morning, the 'Open with' dialog offered the pulldown-menu to choose a program as expected (and not only showed one program icon as it did yesterday... (but why didn't it after the installation yesterday/restart?)

  • 10.4.6 Finder forgets "open with program " entry

Working well since 10.2 now in 10.4.6 my selection "open file with <my REALbasic program>" in the Info-window works only once; when I have stored the file again, then the opening program-selection toggles back to the former (wrong) program - in my case to "TextEdit (default)". The same effect appears immediately, if I try to select "change all such files" in the Info-window. What goes wrong? Can anyone help?

Here's a couple of things you can try:
Open the Terminal app (Utilities folder) and paste this command in at the prompt, then press return. Wait for the prompt to return. This clears out the launchservices db.
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/L aunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user

  • Removing "Open With [Program]" from Right-Click menu

I was looking around for Applications that could play .avi files and I found Perian  so decided to install it. After installing it I quickly found that it didn't work with all of my .avi files and after some further reading realized that Perian is no longer supported and apparently does not work with QT 10. I decided to uninstall it and use VLC player instead. After uninstalling Perian and removing it from the "System Properties" it looks like it's still showing up in the right-click menu for .avi files.
My question is how do I remove this from being an option whenever I right-click an .avi file? Perian is no longer installed and I don't want to see it as an option.
    Thanks in advance

This is probably because all the associated files have not been removed and it is still in the LaunchServices cache. To be sure you remove all associated files may require re-installing the app and using AppCleaner  to trash it and it's supporting files.
Then, you may also need to clear LaunchServices caches
Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the prompt to rebuild LaunchServices: (be sure to copy the entire line it's a scroll)
    Code:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know

  • Will EC support setting default file type and Open With from file menu?

The default file types I can live without, but at least allow for Open With on right click from Windows Explorer.
I currently have EC set in the Open With programs list, but EC does not comply for any files I opt to open it with (.css, .php, .html etc).
EC open but not the file I choose.
Also, even though the above use case is not ideal when if I do attempt an Open With when EC is already open, a new application session starts instead of attempting to open in the currently active app frame. It would be ideal to allow for single app frame, multiple files when Open With is employed.
    Darrell

    Hey Darrell,
Thanks for the feedback. How Edge Code treats files is definitely something we know isn't ideal and it's something we're looking at fixing soon. There's currently a story on the Brackets backlog that adresses the Open With issue - https://trello.com/c/GhF1Bgf9
And it based on howit ranks in that priority it looks like we could potentially take that into Edge Code over the next couple of months.
This is definitely a feature that we think is important before we consider ourselves 1.0 so it's high priority.

  • Duplicate items in "open with" dialogue

    Hi -
Since upgrading to Tiger (currently 10.4.5), I've noticed that if I right-click on a pdf or image file and choose "open with", programs are listed twice. Where does this list come from and are there aliases somewhere that I can delete? Obviously this is not crucial to how things are operating, but an annoyance nonetheless. Thanks in advance.
    Darth

    Hi Darth,
Navigate to /library/caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxxx.csstore. You may have more than one with different negative numbers. Delete all of these.
Then navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.launchservices.plist and delete this file also.
Then log out and back in. Or restart. Let us know.

  • Can't change all files to open with CS2 with CS3 installed

I have InDesign CS2 and CS3 installed on my macbook (10.5). CS3 is buggy to the point where its unusable, but I need it installed because once in awhile I receive files saved in that format.
I wanted to change, through any Get Info window, all Indesign files to Open With CS2 instead of CS3. Problem is, whenever I hit "apply to all files" the OS just instantly changes the program back to CS3.
    Anyone else having this problem?

Let me be a bit clearer.
When I installed CS3, it switched the "Open With" program association of all my CS2 files to CS3. This means the icons for all my CS2 files changed to CS3 icons. And when I double click on my CS2 files, they open in CS3, even if I already have CS2 open. If I have CS2 open, the system just starts opening CS3.
Worse yet, upon installing CS3, all of my CS2 files were CHANGED to CS3 files (looking under "kind" in the "info" windows.
I had thought I could just change all INDD files to asssociate with CS2, but when I go to "Get Info" on a file (CS2 or 3, doesn't matter which), and change the "Open with" to CS2, and hit "Change All", the "Open With" Just changes right back to CS3. Augh.
For now, I just use the "Open" dialogue in CS2 or drag and drop the files. Pain in the rear. So I thought I'd post here.
And though I don't want this to be a discussion of whether CS3 is buggy or not, I'll just say that my system was plagued by the CS3/Leopard NavSvcs and Hide bugs, (only a problem in Mac OS 10.5), both of which have been recognized by Apple and Adobe, as well as thoroughly blogged about by Tim Cole and MacFixit, and countless others.
My favorite is this from the InDesign 5.0.2 Readme file:
This update does not address recently identified issues running Adobe InDesign CS3 on Mac OS
X Leopard (v10.5.1). Known issues include the following:
Users are unable to hide InDesign CS3 using the cmd+h keyboard shortcut.
InDesign CS3 may unexpectedly quit when using the Place, Save, Save As or Export
commands using either the OS or Adobe dialog boxes.
Unfortunately, there are no workarounds for these known issues.
Yes, that's right. I'm one of those lucky folks who's experiencing the known bug where InDesign CS3 crashes when you try to open or save a file. I'm not a troll, I just simply can't use it! Haha.
