Add photo to existing catalog

I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times, and if you can just link me to the answer, I would appreciate it.
I am using LR3. How can I import additional photos to an existing gallery of images, or can't it be done?
I want to shoot a football game, import them at half time, then go back and import the rest of the game at the end and have them all in the same gallery.
Thanks.

The only issue was having a way to keep all the images together after the game. Sounds like I need to take a closer look at collections.
And here I am arguing that collections is a waste of time in this scenario, as in: extra work, no benefit. You already have kept the photos together by putting them in the same folder.
These depends, at least partially, on maintaining a specific pattern of Folders.  i.e., one couldn't just easily use a dated folder system because you could go to two matches in a day.
Collections preclude this, and actually make the DAM easier, so not necessarily a waste of time.
I agree there are many possibilities here, but if the goal is to keep football games distinct, and the user does this via folders (subfolder names football, football2, etc.) then I see no benefit to using collections. I would like the Mort3770 to think about these issues, and to help him avoid unnecessary or redundant or inefficient steps in his workflow. Further, although Mort3770 first mentioned "collections", and we described how to use them, I think he may have been using the term generically, rather than using the term "collections" as a specific Lightroom construct, in which case again his folders may be sufficient.
I also agree with you that I would prefer to use the DAM capabilities of LR (keywords, metadata and collections) rather than folders, as I think LR offers more power and flexibility than folders, but there are many ways to do this.

  • Import 2 more photos to existing Catalog

    I thought this would be
easy as pie, but frustration set in...
    Scenario: Lightroom3
Existing Catalog loaded (216 photos) and in Library mode.
I click on import to import 2 more photos, but it appears that LR wants to create either a new catalog folder or place a copy on my C drive.
How do I just 'add' these 2 photos to an existing catalog. Is this some convoluted logic that Adode dreamed up or are there former Microsoft programmers lurking in the parking lot?

select "into one folder" on the right pane and highlight the folder that already exists.

  • Aperture will not add photos to existing Facebook Albums

    I am currently using Aperture 3.4.5 ..
I have a host of over 50 existing albums on my facebook and I regularly add content to them without any issues what-so-ever, however, two days ago, I tried to add 4 photos to an existing alblum using the normal method of: highlight photos, Share/Facebook, pick the album name from drop down menu, publish.  Normally at this stage, at the bottom of the Aperture window, it'd say something like publish or sync with Faceboon ... but not this time.
I then go to check in my Facebook tab under Web, click into the album and found that the photos which I wanted to add are showing a tick on them, suggesting that the photos are already uploaded onto facebook but the photo count does not match, for example, the album had 8 photos in and i tried to add 4 more, .. the photo count still shows 8 but inside the ablum, all 12 photos have ticks onto of them.

What is the source and details of the format of the photo that will not sync?
    Additional Information
Verify that photos are in a compatible format. On a Mac, these file formats will sync from your iPhoto Library to your device: JPG, JPEG, TIFF, PICT, GIF, PNG, JPG2000 or JP2, PSD, SGI, and BMP.
On Windows, these file formats will sync to your device: JPG , JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIF, TIFF, PSD, SGI, and PNG.

  • Can't add photos to regular catalog

Initially I had no problem doing this or in creating smart catalogs but recently I find that after importing and editing a set of new photos..I can not add them (or a picked subset) to a Catalog ?
I must have something dumb set now, because as I try to drag them from a folder or a single or set of photos from the selected grid view to the named Gatalog.. I get a black circle with a line thru it over the catalog name and the images can't be added to thevcatalog..
Any tips on why this issue started occurring would be most appreciated.

P.S,. I have the. Lr5 beta installed and its behaving the same way as Lr4.4 is now too

Yes, I blew it.. I really do mean (regular) Collections not Catalogs.. I have 50K+ images and 3K of videos in similar Catalogs of folders and scanned images and videos in two Folder sets of these same source images with separate libruary files for each LR version ..
One for LR 4.4 and the other LR5 beta..  one library is on a 2TB dive A: and the other libruary and a set of some 500 new RAW files is on my SSD Drive C:.  I can IMPORT from the camera's SD card fine and use the Develop Module to modify them just fine.. but can not add to regurar collections or subsets of these images in these folders. The Smart Collections that came with Adobe LR4 and the LR5 Beta appear to be in place with many images showing in them.  I can create the uniquely named new Collection and Smart Collection titles or Collection Set titles but I can't figure out why I can not add any files at all to these named new Collections.  Any Clue?  Regards, JimS

all I want to do is add a photo from the library to an existing album. I used to be able to simply drag the selected photo to any album. How do i do this?
    Dave

    David:
It's still supposed to work that way. Are you able to drag a photo anywhere in iPhoto? If not it may be a problem with the Helvetica font. Check out this Apple KB document: Helvetica required to drag photos in iPhoto.
What some users found to clear it up was to go in and deactivate the Helvetica font and then reactivate it. That seemed to trigger it or iPhoto.

  • Add photo to existing film roll

    Hi all,
My question relates to adding photos into an existing film roll. I have some motion jpeg movies taken with my still camera that were not imported to iPhoto when the original folder was imported. Don't remember why unless older versions of iphoto did not import .mov files. Anyhow since these movies relate to the other stills in the roll I would like to add them to the existing roll. Forum search and iphoto help didn't turn up any answer. I suppose I could delete the roll and reimport the entire folder, but was hoping for a simpler solution. Thanks for any help.

    G4 Dual 1.25 MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   iLife 6

    Hi Jim,
    After the movies are imported:
Command click on each movie and roll you want combined to one roll
    Go to File>create film roll
    From the iPhoto Help menu:
    Creating a customized film roll
    To create a film roll:
Click Library in the Source list.
Select the photos you want in your new film roll. Command-click to select non-adjacent photos.
Choose File > Create Film Roll.
Your selected photos will be removed from their current film rolls and moved to the new film roll you create.
After you've created a new film roll, you can name it and change its date. Customizing film rolls is one way to better organize your photo library.

I might be more helpful to explain what your problem is here -- that is what difficulties are you having in either overlaying the video with still images; creating a video of stills and "pinning" the extracted audio to the stills; segmenting the video, adding stills, and then pinning the extracted audio; or some other work flow?

  • Add photos to iPhone without deleting existing if original photos are lost

How do I add photos to my iPhone without deleting the existing ones on the phone if the original photos on my desktop PC have been destroyed by hard drive crash?
Basically, I want to insert new photos on to my iPhone. But, if I do a synch, it will delete my old photos, which now exist only on the iPhone itself.
I only see an all-or-nothing option when you synch. I don't see a way to add new photos without deleting the existing ones unless you still have all of the photos in a folder on your desktop computer. Help?

You don't. The iphone is nota storage device.
It simply mirrors the selected content from your computer.
If it is not on the computer, then it is not on the iphone. Sorry.
Your pics should have been included in your regular back up copy of your computer file/docs/pics/music/etc.
If for some reason you did not backup your pics ( not good), then you can e-mail the pics to yourself.

When I upload photos from iphoto or any other folder it overwrites all the existing photos in my ipad. is there a way to add to the existing library without deleting what's already in the library?

No, apart from using the emailing them, to yourself or using a third-party app such as Simple Transfer (in which case the photos will only go into the Saved Photos/Camera Roll album) or the camera connection kit (Imported album). You need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad in one go, as only the contents of the most recent sync remains on the iPad - not including photos in a sync is how you delete them from the iPad

  • Lightroom 3 ~ Move photos from one catalog to another, existing catalog? Not "export as new catalog"

After consulting the interwebs and the Adobe site and a book about Lightroom 3, I remain confused about how to quickly and easily get photos from one existing catalog to a different catalog, since LR doesn't allow one (for its own arcane reasons, I assume) to have more than one catalog open at once.
Say I've got a Quick Collection of stuff I previously imported into "Catalog X" when it really belongs in "Catalog Y." What is the best way to get those photos into Catalog Y? Exporting this Quick Collection as a new catalog; closing down Catalog X; bringing up Catalog Y; running an import dialogue to import that Quick Collection... well, that seems pretty ridiculous. I assume I'm missing something obvious. Anyone know what the command is?
Also, if anyone can direct me to the Lightroom 3 discussions, as the search function here seems pretty rudimentary (e.g. put "lightroom 3" in the search box and it will bring up dozens of hits for "lightroom 4.3"), that'd be awesome... thanks...

    etcetera23 wrote:
it's less confusing for me if i can just dump a whole folder full of stuff onto a drive and know that LR will look for it in that location, and not throw ?'s at me.
You can do exactly that. When the drive is plugged or on a network you have access to there will be no "?".
For offline drives "?" just do not mean anything other than plug it when you want them gone.
the lrcat could live on Dropbox or iCloud.
Yes, it could. But then I would not set Dropbox for continuous updates, as this might slow LR down. Just a triggered update once LR gets closed.
so - cornelia, when you travel, how do you handle bringing images to work on with you? for example, suppose you have 500 images you want to work on. LR believes that these images, along with many others, live in the folder BigHardDrive/prettypictures/Sep2012/ . are you working directly on those previews you mentioned, instead of looking at the originals while you're Developing, etc?
For Developing I need to have the image online, no way around that. Same for print and export. I have the images with me, preferably on my internal laptop drive, or on a USB-3.0-external disk (1-2 TB big).
For rating and other metadata adding the previews are sufficient.
When I travel on holidays to take new pictures I create a brand-new travel catalog on a small laptop and import every day the new shoot into it. I organize per day and import from all cameras into the same folder. I make a 2nd copy on a plugged USB-external drive, and I leave the camera storage card uncleared until the end of the journey. So I have 3 versions of the images.
In the evenings I have the new images completely available on the small laptop and develop them in the travel catalog. Usually I succeed only partially, as the quantity is too big, so I continue later on.
Back home I import the travel catalog into my master catalog on my big laptop, and the images onto its internal hard disk. I prefer this for speed during further development. The backup copies go on 2 different NAS drives, unnoticed by LR. Only then would I format my camera storage cards - 3 versions at any time is my motto.
Then the travel catalog has ended its life for me.
When I am done with my main editing I move the images from my internal hard disk to a 3rd NAS drive by dragging-dropping from within LR, into what I call my "LiveArchives": my master catalog will point to them 'forever'. The other 2 versions on the other NAS drives stay as they are, because I want them for being able to replenish my LiveArchives in case of failure. So LR does not know these safety-versions.
When I travel e.g. to my relatives to show images, I make sure that my master catalog has rendered all previews in the size and quality I want (standard previews 1680px high quality). Then I unplug my big laptop and go for the visit.
When I show the images, there are of course the "?", because I have no access to my NAS-drives.
I need to use the Survey-mode (N) with 1 image at a time in order not to see the black message "images is offline or missing", which would show in normal loupe view (E).
Or I show slideshows, which I have usually prepared as slideshow-collections before with rendered previews.
The biggest challenge for such slideshows is to decide how little to include to entertain your audience well - 400-600 images max, less is more.
Very nice about these visits is that I am able to quickly find almost any image my host might remember ("you know that funny face of cousin X, must have been at the birthday party of uncle Y, but I don't remember if it was Year 2003 or 2004 or possibly 2005?"). My success on this depends of course on my efforts of having added the relevant metadata. For this it is worth while to ask the others how they would search, what bits&pieces they remember - this gives you a valuable clue on how to keyword or what to put into titles/captions. Indispensable if you want to leave a legacy of images to the next generation.
If I had to close a catalog and open another one every now and then, I would not achieve that.
Same need, but very different requirements if you want to sell your images as stock.
thanks for all the suggestions. again, i am a lowly user indeed, and the professional who set me up on this, and taught me some methodologies for organizing, apparently didn't do the greatest job of it.
Well I would probably not consider him as a "professional"... but you also find on this forum some questions from poeple who claim to advise clients, where I think if they would only stop trying that...
I can just tell what works for me and why.
To advise others I need to understand their real needs - mostly there are several ways how to accomodate that - what will work for the poster is for him/her to decide after trial. Thinking in real needs rather than preconceived technical routes.
My own workflow has considerably evolved thanks to 3 years of reading on this forum.

  • Unable to Add Photo/Vid to Existing Album

    Hello,
Racking my brain on this one and didn't find anything on a cursory search.
I am trying to add pics/vids to an existing album on my iPhone 5 w/iOS 7.  When I select the photo or vid from either albums or roll, select "Add to Album" all of my existing albums are grayed out and only the option to add to "New Album" is available.  How can I add a photo/vid to an existing album on my iPhone?  The workound I have used is to sync the iPhone with iTunes and and manually add the pic/vid to the existing album and then re-sync - cumbersome to say the least.
    Thanks!

I have discovered that the problem is that the albums I was trying to add the new photos/vids were created on my computer and one is unable to add photos to such albums.  Creating a new album on my iPhone allowed me to add photos/vids to it on the fly.
    Thanks!

  • When I go to add photos into an existing album the albums won't allow me to select them. How do you fix this problem?

When I go to select the photos then hit the arrow to add to existing album it brings up my albums but they are blacked out and won't allow me to select the album I need the photos to go. How do I make it so the photos can go into an album?

Which albums are you trying to add them to ? You should be able to add them to new albums that you've created directly on the iPad, but you can't add photos to albums that were synced from a computer.

    Shashi,
If you go to the catalog admin tools and search on "*" for example you
should see all the catalog items. Please describe in detail what you are
    doing.
Besides that, what differentiates one catalog for one domain with theother catalog
for another domain?Baring other configuration changes - nothing. The catalog items are loaded
from the RDBMS, so if each domain is using the same sample data you should
    see the same catalog.

  • HT201077 How do I add photos from my windows computer to an existing photostream

I have an iPad 2, and a Windows computer. I would like to use PhotoStream to make the pictures that are now on my windows Vista computer available on the iPad. I have made a photostream and added some pictures to it. Then I tried to add more, by choosing add pictures to photostream. I selected 31 pictures and clicked ready. It takes some time, and then the pictures are NOT available on the photostream! What is going wrong?
(I can not even see them in the photostream on my Windows Vista computer!)
The pictures are made with an Olympus MJU 740 digital camera, partly before I bought the iPad, and partly on the last holiday. I don't like to take the iPad with me on every trip, but I use it as a convenient photo frame to show my pictures to my friends, (and also for other things)

    Hi JoepFr,
Here is an alternate method to add photos to Photo Stream from a PC:
iCloud: Add photos to Photo Stream manually
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2606
    From your Windows desktop
From your Windows desktop, drag any photo to the Photo Stream Uploads folder you chose in the iCloud Control Panel.
Note:   Photos in Photo Stream appear in the order they were originally taken, not in the order they were added to Photo Stream. If you manually add photos, they appear throughout Photo Stream in the appropriate date order.
For a list of file types that can be added to Photo Stream, read “What photo formats does Photo Stream support” in the Photo Stream FAQ on the iCloud Support website.
Additionally, ensure your photos are in the right format:
    iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486
What photo formats does Photo Stream support?
Photo Stream supports JPEG, TIFF, PNG, and most RAW photo formats. Photo Stream does not work with video.

  • Are Virtual Copies saved in Backups? How do I insert a backup into an existing catalog?

Are Virtual Copies saved in Backups? How do I insert a backup into an existing catalog
I deleted a tif image file that I didn't intend to, which had several LR virtual copies created from it. The virtual copies had a lot of important history that document my print preparation edits. Are these virtual copies saved in the LR backups?
If so, how can I insert them into the catalog I am using? I have made a lot of edits in the two days since my last backup and don't want to lose that history either. Do you suggest I make a current backup before retrieving files from my last backup? I know I'm supposed to go to the backup location and open the last backup, but how do I blend that with the current work from the last 2 days?
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, Tom

    Rob,
That was exactly what I was after. However, I'm still having trouble getting the virtual copies imported. The master file was in my trash, I restored it to the original hard drive folder. Before I got your message I re- imported it to LR but of course LR came up with a new name since I was importing from and saving it to the same folder in LR. And of course no copies. This may have been a mistake, but before starting the procedure you described, I re-named the master file (it seemed that the import from backup would re-create it so I didn't want  a conflict).
Then I did what you said and used the 'Import From Another Catalog' feature. I found the virtual copies in the backup and checked them. But when the import completed, the it gave me file names  xxx/Copy1, xxx/Copy2 but there was no image or history or metadata. When I tried to find the folder containing the files, it said it couldn't be found. So I missed something in the settings. When I tried again, there was a warning saying the file(s) exists in the catalog and its settings differ. I went ahead anyway and the message I got was "No Photos in previous import"
Here's what the import from backup shows:
A box with catalog contents and all the folders and files within them, that you can check.
A New Photos section, which gives 2 file handling choices: a)add new photos to the catalog without moving them or b) don't import new photos
A Changed existing photos section with 2 replace options: a) nothing or b) Metadata and develop setting only. If you choose this you can check a box to preserve old settings as a virtual copy.
Not sure what to do. I changed the master file back to its original name, but that didn't make a difference. Suggestions? Thanks, Tom
