Adding a windows printer to Leopard on a mixed platform network.

I have a home network based on a DI-624 wireless router and consisting of 3 desktop PCs running XP, Vista, and 7 together with an Apple Imac running OSX 10.5.8. All 4 systems can see each other and share files with one another, the 3 windows systems can all print to a shared printer attached by USB to the XP system.
I have been trying unsuccessfully to add the printer to OSX and the process almost works in that OSX will find the Workgroup, the Server (XP system) and even the Device by share name but, there is no HP PSC 1200 in the list called "Print Using", and unless a choice is made from that list the ADD button to complete the process remains disabled.
I have the HP driver CD for OSX and have been able to install the printer as local, but can find no way of either including this driver in the "Print Using" list or bypassing the requirement to choose something in that list.
I have searched high and low for a solution and have tried many suggestions but always finish up at the "Print Using" list which never includes the printer I have.
Can anyone out there help?
One other point worth mentioning,
I am relatively new to OSX but have years of windows experience so please make any instructions very basic and detailed like "starting from the desktop...."etc.

That seems to do a better job of advertising Windows' services better... someversions of Windows® may take 45 minutes to advertise a Printer or File Sharing available to Macs.
I assume you enabled Printer Sharing on the PC, & added the Mac User to the PC as a valid user!?

Can no longer print to shared windows printer after leopard upgrade

Hi guys,
I know this is a topic that has come up before, and I have gone through the support forums trying to resolve this on my own, but I am at a roadblock. Printing used to work on Tiger, and now it doesn't, and I simply don't know how to debug the problem any further. Hopefully someone here can help me help myself... In the meantime because of this issue, and several others, I've had to "downgrade" back to Tiger.
Here are the "facts".
1. I have a Epson Stylus R300 printer.
2. Printer is connected to windows XP box.
3. Said xp box is on network at 192.168.1.101
4. Mac ip is 192.168.1.102
5. Windows workgroup name is sutter_wg
6. shared printer name is stylus_pc
I have added the advanced tab to the add printer dialog and thus have access to directly putting the address of the printer. I don't really understand samba - I was only able to get it to work on Tiger by reading through the support forums. I have not been as successful with the Leopard support forums. I'm doing the following from memory as I'm not currently at my mac... anyway, this is the address I used to "add" the printer.
smb://192.168.1.101/stylus_pc
smb://192.168.1.101/sutterwg/styluspc
When I go to print, it is placed in the print queue and nothing happens. No error message, and no print. Looking at the print queue, it's in the stop state. But I don't get any information on why it went to stop that I can use to debug. Did it not resolve the ip? Was there some kind of permissions problem? Is there a printer driver incompatibility? I don't know. I don't know how to find out.
So here's what I've done so far from a debug point of view.
1. I've proved that I can connect to the windows box in Leopard via the "go to server" option in Finder.
2. I've connected the stylus to the mac directly and printed from there. No problems. Interestingly though, it's a different printer driver. When I connect the printer up directly, the printer driver is for Epson Stylus R300, my exact printer. However when I add the printer via the network, the best I can do is a generic "epson stylus" printer driver. I went to epson web page to download the latest driver, and they only have drivers for 10.4. No 10.5. Apparently Leopard has a 10.5 driver built in since it used it when I connected directly, but that driver does not appear to be available when I add the printer via the network. What gives?
So that's where I'm at. If anyone has any help to offer, I'd much appreciate it.

How does one print to enterprise Windows print services in Yosemite? CUPS 2.0 problem?

One of my co-workers upgraded to Yosemite yesterday and it broke his ability to print to our corporate printing services (which are built around a Windows print server). Obviously, the printer discovery in the System Preferences can't find the Windows print server - that's never worked. However, we had previously been able to add a printer through the CUPS web front-end by adding a Windows printer and specifying an SMB URL in the format:
smb://DOMAIN;USER:[email protected]/QUEUE-NAME
... which worked like a charm in Mavericks. However, Yosemite has upgraded to CUPS 2.0.0 and this no longer seems to work. Print jobs enter the CUPS queue, but authentication fails and they are not accepted by the remote server.
I've consulted the CUPS 2.0.0 documentation, and there's not really anything helpful there. In fact, there's no mention of SMB / Windows printing at all in the 2.0.0 documentation. Unfortunately our campus print services does not support IPP, LP, LPR, or JetDirect as options -- just Windows printing.
Does anyone have a suggestion?

Just finished testing 10.10 printing via a Windows 2008 R2 print share. I also found that when trying to add the printer using CUPS I would get an authentication error. But if I added the printer using the Windows section of the Add printer pane, then I was able to print fine.
So with you mentioning that using the Windows section of the Add printer window has never worked (which is interesting because it's always worked for me) I want to suggest another approach to adding the printer, still using the Add printer window. With this window open you can right-click on the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar. You can then drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar. Then when you select this, you can set the Type menu to "Windows via spoolss" and then enter the URL as smb://servername/sharename. Select the supporting driver and click Add to complete.
Then when you select to print for the first time using this printer you will be prompted to authenticate. Enter the account details, set the save to Keychain option and OK to send the print job.
This worked fine for me and creates the same queue as using the Windows add printer setting. Curious to hear if this gets your co-worker printing again.

Windows Printing via Samba

In Mac OS 10.4 there was a feature in the Printer Setup Utility where the option key could be held down while "more printers" was being clicked and an advanced option would be added to the pull down menu for the printing method. This advanced tab allowed one to setup Windows Printing Via Samba. When one holds down the option key while clicking more printers in the printer setup system preference in OS 10.5, there is no longer an advanced option that appears in the pull down menu. Is there way to setup this same feature in OS 10.5?

I was having this issue too. This is a Windows/Apple compatibility thing I think, My company uses Active Directory but won't support my Mac Laptop On it. (They are living in the past).
Anyway, because Active Directory isn't set up you must enter your passwords while setting up the printer and check the box that says save to the Keychains.
SO, to add it on the NT network. Open Printer/Fax in System prefs. Then click the + Button. On top choose Windows Printer and you'll get the entire network. As you follow the network at each server you are going to if it requires a user name and password enter them and make sure you tell it to save in your key chains.When you finally reach your Network Printer it may or may not ask for a password there. My Company it only asks at the server levels.
Now for the unknown part. Depending on how your IT dept. has set things up you may have to enter your USER NAME in the Authorization Box as follows DOMAIN\USERNAME (NOTE the "\" backslash!). Also note that this format wasn't consistent across servers, again, at least at my Company. It all depends on how the servers are set up. To use the printer by my desk I have to go through 3 servers each two needed the domain\username and one did not. It's a guessing game unless you can use Active Directory.
At least in my company this worked and I'm able to print again. I did find if I entered my Authorization information wrong (type-os). I could NOT edit them in Keychain Access and have it work correctly I always has to go back to the whole add Windows and follow the correct path.
I'm sure someone more savvy than I might be able to chime in here and describe how to add a printer by just typing the URL and if you are that person please let us know it would be alot easier!

Printing to a Windows printer

After many many hours searching the web and reading page after page, I'm hopelessly lost.
I'm trying to print from my Apple iMac G5 to a printer which is connected to a Windows laptop.
My setup is:
Canon MP780 multifunction printer connected to a Dell laptop (computer name: sstiglerdell) running Windows XP.
Dell laptop is connected to a linksys router
iMac G5 running OSX 10.4.5 wirelessly connected to an AirPort Extreme Base station (firmware 5.7)
AirPort Extreme Base station connected to the linksys router
Linksys router connect to a cable modem.
I'm able to connect to the internet from both computers and able to access shared folders on the laptop from the mac.
From Finder, if I select Go, Connect to Server and enter smb://192.168.15.100/ashley, I'm able to connect to the shared folder which resides on the Dell laptop. Interestingly enough, if instead I enter smb://sstiglerdell/ashley, I'm not able to connect to the shared folder!
However, from Finder, if I select the Network globe, I don't see the windows laptop.
Now, from the Printer Setup Utility, when I select Add, More Printers, and change the first drop down to "Windows Printing" and the second drop down to "Network Neighborhood", the only network I see is one called "Workgroup". I presume this is the default Apple workgroup. My laptop is in a workgroup called "stiglerhome".
If anyone could provide me any guidance or suggestions I would be really grateful.

Ensure that your AEBS is configured to not distribute IP addresses.
You may still have issues with the Mac drivers for the Canon printer.

OS 10.6 Network Windows Printer Lexmark 3350 keeps Spooling not Printing

I have downloaded the latest driver from Lexmark and Apple. My Macbook Pro sees the network printer and sends the document, it shows up on the windows computer in the queue box put never prints. I jumped the printer to the Mac with a usb cord and it was recognized right away and prints OK.

What you are experiencing is a common symptom when a Mac connects to a Windows share. The cause is often related to the Mac driver, in that it has not been designed to work when the printer is shared by Windows. As you have seen, it works fine when connected directly to the Mac. But it fails when the printer is shared by Windows.
For these types of cross-platform network connections, you often have to use a CUPS-based printer driver, such as those offered by Gutenprint. Looking through the list of supported printers for Gutenprint v5.2.4, your model of Lexmark is not listed. So you may have to look at using one of the models that is listed to see if that works.

Adding Windows Printer Tab in Snow Leopard

Hello,
I have a HP Deskjet F2280 connected Via USB into my Windows XP PC. I have been using this PC as a print server and have had no problems connecting to it through my macbook running leopard through SAMBA.
Now after my upgrade to SL i am unable to connect to the printer. I have tried deleting the printer under the printer system preferences, but i am now unable to add the printer again - I installed the printer in leopard 10.5 previously through the windows tab under add printer in printer preferences.
Now in SL the Windows tab is greyed out. I have doubled checked that my mac is part of my workgroup in the WINS tab in network preferences, and i have checked if file (SMB) and printer sharing are turned on. My firewall is also off. For some reason i cant work out why i cant add a windows printer. Does SL require a new way to register workgroups?
Any help would be appreciated.
P.S: I know HP drivers arent really supported in SL, but usually i could use the generic postscript driver, and this usually works under 10.5

I don't believe you need to do anything different in SL to connect to a Windows shared printer.
On my SL Mac, the Add Printer > Windows icon is still available and that is with both File and Printer sharing disabled on SL. I also don't a Workgroup name entered in WINS, although if you did I don't see this stopping the add Windows printer function.
If you open Finder, do you see the Windows box in the Shared view?
You may be able to work around the Add Printer issue by adding the Advanced menu to the Add Printer toolbar (control-click on the toolbar, select customize and drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar). If you then change the Type to Windows, you can enter the path to the printer in the URL section (smb://Windowsname/printer_sharename) and select the Generic PS in print using menu. Hopefully the Windows menu is available for you in this view...

Printing w/Leopard & AD-based Windows Print Queues:

For those interested, I have written an overview of printing in Leopard 10.5.0 to Windows print servers (published queues Active Directory). Your mileage may vary. This document contains the good the bad and the ugly.
Objective:
Get Leopard based Macs to print to AD published SMB print queues hosted on Windows 2003 print servers. Sounds easy, huh?
Overview:
Print Servers:
Windows 2003 print servers.
Printers:
All the printers in my test were all new HP network b/w printers or network MFP b/w printers. All of them were less than 2 years old. None of them were consumer-grade home USB printers.
Mac Clients:
My test clients were Intel MacBook Pros and Intel iMacs running 10.5.0 Leopard. All of them had user AD accounts and all Macs were bound to AD using Directory Utility (or dsconfigad)
The AD clients have a unique naming convention at my company. In my environment we use the initials of the person for their login name (SAM). Example:
Real “human” Name: “Stephen Paul Jobs”
Long Active Directory Name: “Steve Jobs”
Short Active Directory Name: “spj”
“Legacy” NT Names: “domain\spj”
Full domain name (used for email etc): “[email protected]”
(you get the idea...)
Note: My Mac clients are not in an Open Directory domain. No “Magic Triangle” in this environment. Pure AD for the sake of this example. I am not managing the Mac clients via MCX in this scenario.
Print Protocols:
All the print queues hosted on the print servers were standard SMB/CIFS print queues. The syntax (UNC) looks like this:
smb://print_server.domain/queue
(This syntax is invisible to most users printing to AD-published printers (or any network based printer really) . Most users will have no idea what protocols are being used.)
Procedures:
Part 1: Set up a new printer from an existing AD-published print queue:
From the Apple menu select “System Preferences...” (or launch it from /Applications). The Printer Setup Utility app no longer exists. Apple has discontinued it fro various reasons.
Click on the Printer & Fax pane.
Click the “+” button on the left. This will launch the Apple Printer Browser (called “AddPrinter”, and lives in /System/Library/CoreServices), which looks similar to the previous browser in Tiger. The Printer Browser by default will usually show network printers vai Directory Services (AD/OD etc) as well as Bonjour printers and Mac OS X based shared printers – if they are shared via IPP and LPR under certain circumstances).
Select the desired AD-published print queue you want to print to by highlighting it in the browser list and clicking the “Add” button. (Note: Print queues published via Active Directory will show up as “Open Directory” printers, even though this is not 100% technically correct.)
Before the queue will be added, you will be prompted to authenticate as a local administrator. If you are not an admin you are screwed. Enter your name and password.
Once the print queue is added, it will show up on your Mac in several ways (barring any bugs – see below). Here are the ways to tell if you have added the print queue successfully:
A The new print queue will now be displayed in the Print & Fax system pref pane (but not always – see below).
B You will see a printer proxy application in ~/Library/Printers/ which corresponds to your new print queue. This is the print monitor app that will show up in your Dock when you print to the queue.
C You can see the new print queue via the CUPS admin page at http://localhost:631/printers.
D You can see your new print queue from the Terminal by typing this command: “lpstat –v” (type “man lpstat” for more info on the lpstat and related commands)
E You can also see your printers by launching an print-enabled application such as TextEdit or Safari and printing a page. You will be presented with Leopard’s new print dialog box (which now includes a print preview pane). From the “Printer” drop-down menu you can see all of your printers. You can add a printer from here too (which takes you to the steps listed above)
(of course, most end users will only use option A listed above. The other options are more abstract and complicated)
Now that the AD print queue has been setup on your Mac, you can print to it (maybe).
Part 2: Printing to an AD-published print queue:
Open a document you want to print.
Choose “Page Setup...” from the File menu if you need to configure the job. (Optional)
Choose “Print” from the File menu.
From the Print dialog box, choose the desired print queue from the Printer menu
Click the Print button.
You will need to authenticate with a valid Active Directory username and password. You don’t have to have administrator credentials, but you have to verify that you are a domain member. In my environment, my Windows print server doesn't require authentication, but for some reason Leopard or CUPS makes you authenticate. (See below). Not only is this a major PIA, but the authentication dialog box itself is formatted to include the wrong credentials format for authentication in the first place.
Volia! Done. Easy huh? Not really. Read on for the ugly stuff.
My Complaints and Caveats:
OK, so here’s where I vent, complain and scratch my head. Join in on the fun.
Sometimes shared print queues don’t show up in the Print & Fax system preference pane after they have been added. I have no idea why. The local CUPS admin page (http://localhost:631) on my Mac test clients can see the connected queues, and the queues show up in ~/Library/Printers. The “lpstat –v” command shows the connect queues too. But for some reason, sometimes network print queues that I have previously setup (and use regularly) don’t show up in the Leopard Print & Fax preference pane. Local USB printers always show up fine for me.
2. When challenged to authenticate a print job to a Windows print server (AD), the Mac’s authentication dialog box pre-populates the AD user’s name in the “Name” field incorrectly. Example:
A user named “Joe Is Cool” (short name “JIC”) prints a job to the print server. The print auth dialog box challenges him for a name and password. It is pre-populated already with the name of “Cool, Joe”. When a valid AD password is entered, the job is rejected (it fails authentication and gets put on hold – which is hard to see this unless you explicitly look at the Printer.app proxy tool in the Dock). However, if the user replaces “Cool, Joe” with his official AD short name of “JIC” and then enters his AD password, the print job is accepted and printed. I wish Apple didn’t try and pre-populate the dialog box! Can this be avoided or prevented?
In my environment, my Windows print server doesn't even require authentication, but for some reason Leopard or CUPS makes you authenticate. I’m working with my Windows administrators to figure this out. It will only accept user names with the short name format. It will not accept long (full) names or NT legacy names.
3) The Printer Setup Utility app, which used to live in /Applications/Utilities, no longer exists. Apple has discontinued it for various reasons. Mainly security and simplicity. I wish it was still available, but the system pref pane works fine (well, usually)
4) Active Directory-based print queues will show up in the OS X Printer Browser as “Open Directory” printers, even though this is not 100% technically correct. Why can’t OS X tell the difference between OD queues and AD queues and label them as such?
5) Leopard has locked down the ability to add network printers. You now must be a local administrator in 10.5 or later. I understand the importance of this security measure in certain environments, but why can’t there be an option in the Security preference pane to “Allow non-admins to add printers”? This would make me very happy.
6) Setting the default printer and resetting the CUPS system now require you to right-click in the left side of the Print & Fax pane. There no longer is a button or menu option to do this.
7) Sometimes after a job has printed the printer proxy app (from ~/Library/Printers) stays in the Dock and won’t go away.
Conclusion
Please chime in on your experiences, bugs, opinions and comments.

I have noticed several of the changes in our system when printing to an AD printer from a Leopard client. I have one issue that is pretty odd and I'm not sure what is going on. When printing an Excel worksheet, I get prompted for AD credentials. After submitting the job, the print queue says "Waiting for Authentication", I have to press the Resume button and then the authentication dialog pops up. I successfully authenticate (My auth dialog is populated correctly and the remember to keychain option is selected) and the job prints fine. If I print the same document again (without closing the worksheet or Excel), or any other worksheet, I still have to reauth. I can print just fine to the same printer from Textwriter and I do not need to authenticate. Weird...

Adding a Windows Shared Printer that I cannot see

In 10.4 I was able to add a windows printer that was shared on my network that I couldn't see by hitting alt-More Printers. It would give me an advanced mode. I cannot find how to do this in Leopard. Can someone help me please.

Question about windows printer canon bj5200 can't print or see in Leopard

this has been a problem for me in Tiger as well, I have a windows workgroup network and have a canon bj5200 share on a windows xp machine, I've done some research and can't seem to find the solution on how print from Leopard (previous Tiger) to the shared printer. I choose + to add the printer and then windows it shows my network name but nothing after that. Solutions anyone?

You will either need to enable the Guest account on the Windows computer or create an SMB queue using the account details for the XP PC. In Tiger this was done using the Advanced setting which was available after holding the Option key while pressing More Printers. Not sure if the same process exists for Leopard - will have to check on the MacPro at work or someone with Leopard at home can confirm.
Also, you probably won't be able to use the Canon provided driver as they are usually written to work only with a direct USB connection from the Mac. So you have to find a compatible GIMP-Print (know Gutenprint) driver for the 5200. However the Canon BJ5200 is not listed as a supported device under Gutenprint v5.1.3 nor PrintFab. Are you sure of the model? There is a iP5200...

Airport Extreme Sharing printer to Leopard and Windows 7 via Ethernet port.

My home office is in a mixed environment, 1 iMac with Leopard 10.5.8, and the other iMac running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on bootcamp. Both computers are connected to the Airport Extreme (dual band version, firmware 7.4.2) via Ethernet. I attached the HP LaserJet P1006 to the Airport's usb port in order to share the printer to both platforms.
My problem is that, I got the printer installed on Win 7 by using bonjour print service v2.02 without any problem as it said works in both Ethernet and wireless, I sent a print test from win 7 successfully, then I did another test from leopard ( as I presumed it should works also), however, it says "the printer is in use". and wouldn't print. I tried restart the Airport Extreme and tried print from leopard again and that was fine but then Win 7 couldn't print.
Is there any solution for Mac + Win environment like my description? If I have 2 computers running on OS X they print perfectly well. Thanks all!
My solution for now is to physically plugging the printer to where I need to print from. I use Ethernet wired both computers is because I want to take the advantage of the gigabyte lan port for speedy files transfer between both computers.

If networking isn't working out for you, you may want to try out a swtich. Best Buy sells one by IOGEAR that allows for two USB connections to tie into one computer. So long as windows 7 can either download its own driver for the printer for basic features, or if you want to download canon's driver this solution will work. The only draw back is having to bring the laptop near the printer when you need to print.

Problem Connecting to Shared Printer on Leopard from Windows XP

Hey guys,
Just installed Leopard yesterday, and I have a Canon PIXMA MP160 printer connected via USB.
I have set the printer to be Shared, and enabled Printer Sharing in the Sharing preferences.
However, when I try and connect to the printer from a Windows XP laptop, it says: Access Denied, Unable to Connect.
I imagine that this is because I would have provide a username / password combo in order to access the network resources on my Leopard machine. I just can't figure out how to send the credentials, or disable the login necessity if needs be.
If this isn't the problem, or if it cannot be fixed then the alternative is to connect the printer to my router, which shares it via SMB. Now that's fine when I want to connect to it from Windows, but I can't figure out a way to set it up on Leopard.
The MP160 driver that comes with Leopard isn't marked as "Modern" which, according to the documentation means that it cannot be used to install IP or Windows Shared printers.
So my question is, to sum up, is there a way to fix the access problem when trying to access a shared printer on Leopard from Windows, and is there any way I can install and use the printer from Leopard while its shared from my Router via SMB?

I just thought it would be helpful to say that I'm able to connect and browse through SMB shares from Windows Systems, and I'm able to connect and browse through shared volumes on Leopard from Windows. It's just the printing that's not playing fair.

I had Bonjour for Windows working on two XP machines before I upgraded to Leopard. After that when the Bonjour printer would not work I deleted it from the XP machines and re-ran the Bonjour Setup App. It can find the printer every time, but it will not finish and will give me an error instead.
I've also verified that I have Printer Sharing turned on and the printer is specifically set to be shared. I'm out of ideas.
Has anyone heard reports of Bonjour 1.0.4 not working with Leopard or just being buggy under similar circumstances? If that's not the problem, then I must be missing something. Suggestions welcome.

Cannot find shared windows printer with NEW macbook running leopard HELP!

I just bought a new Macbook this past week. Woo Hoo. I love everything about it with the exception of file sharing and printer sharing. I have a less than one year old pc running vista that is connected to a hp 1300 series all in one printer. I can not even find this printer anywhere on the mac. i have been able to connect to my pc server via the ip address and share files this way. I am at a loss and really have no knowledge of mac. it is really disheartening, as I had way less trouble setting up windows networks for my roommates in college.
Also, as a side helper, how can I setup a shared folder that can be accessed from both the mac and the pc. I would like something that I can set on the desktop of both in order to share files better and more efficiently than connecting to a server everytime I want to do this. Please help, and explain as if I am as stupid as I appear.

Adding a shared Windows printer

I am attempting to add to my iMac G5 a shared Windows printer (a Canon i9900) via the Printer Setup Utility following Apple Support Document # 301397 instructions. The printer is connected to a PC (running Windows XP) via a USB cable. The iMac and PC are networked via a router. One of the last instructions (7) in the Apple Support Document # 301397, "Choose the appropriate PPD or printer driver from the Printer Model pop-up menu" leads me to select "Other" for the Printer Model since there is no i9900 printer in the list of printers offered. This, in turn, leads me to a "Choose a File" window, actually the HD directory where the user (me) is expected (I guess) to find the pertinent driver. I have a driver installer CD that accompanied the i9900 but there are no drivers which can be selected on that CD (only a driver installer). I can install the drivers using the installer program on the CD but that simply installs the i9900 printer as a local printer to the iMac.
So the question is: How do I find the "appropriate PPD or printer driver from the Printer Model pop-up menu" as Apple Support Document # 301397 instructs me to do? Or is there a better way to do this?

Adding to available "Printer Models" for shared Windows printers

I have a MacBook (my first Mac) and I have been able to get it to network with my Windows XP desktop, and it can print to the Canon Pixma iP4000 printer connected to the Windows machine.
However, in Printer Setup, I had to choose a Printer Model, and the closest I could find is "Canon S800 - Gimp Print v.5.0.0 beta 2" -- which allows me to print, but the printouts are all in draft mode.
I would like more control over the printer settings. Is there a way to add to that list of available Printer Models (i.e., is there some way to download an update for that list)??

Thanks, Greg, for the iFelix link. I had found that already, and run through the steps many times last night, and it still did't work on my MacBook.
However, I did find another set of instructions on another web site that helped me get it working. Basically, I set it up as an LPD/LPR printer instead of a Windows Printer, addressing it via the IP address of my WinXP machine. I still have to use the manual sheet feeder (the driver can't deal properly with the paper tray on the bottom of the printer), but at least I was able to print.
Oddly, I just tried again using the iFelix instructions, and now it works! Why it didn't work last night, I don't know. But now I've got two means of accessing this printer.
