Adding Hyper-V features to Windows Server 2012

I have already set up a virtual machine with Windows server 2012, when I try to add Hyper-V features it prompts error:
Hyper-V cannot be installed: The processor does not have required visualization capability.
The VM properties is:
Memory 1GB
Processor 2
Thanks to help me on this,
Zara

Confirmimg brian response, the CPU needs virtualization features for Hyper-V to be enabled.
The following link shows the hyper- V requirement for Hyper-v 2008 R2 (also true for 2012)
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731898.aspx
If you want to test hyper-v inside VMs, you can download VMware workstation. There is an interesting feature (only for test purposes) that can let the vcpu inherit virtualization features, that you can enable via the VM settings. You will however notice
performances hit.

    Hi,
I would like to suggest you first run get-windowsfeature command on the core locally not remotely. And if it works, then try to remote run it.

  • Hyper-V Gen 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 VM cannot define static IP address

    Hi,
I have setup a physical server with Windows Server 2012 R2. It has only the Hyper-V role installed. The physical server has two NICs that I have teamed with Hyper-V port as the load balancer. I have created 1 VM on this Hyper-V server that is a
Generation 2 VM running Windows Server 2012 R2. It has one NIC in the guest OS that is connected to the Hyper-V switch.
Now the Guest OS works fine and network connectivity is great when using DHCP but when I configure a static IP address in the Guest OS all network connectivity is lost even with correct IP configuration. Is this something to do with a Gen 2 VM?
A little more background - We have another Hyper-V server running Windows Server 2012 R2 with the same NIC teaming in the Host OS, on this Hyper-V there is a GEN 1 Windows Server 2012 R2 that has a static IP configured which is working normally.
    Any help is appreciated.

I have resolved the issue. It appeared the hard IP phones were using the same IP range that I was attempting to use so of course the VM could not use the IP Address. Silly mistake.
Elliot, I suggest you mark as Helpful and Answer any responses above that were helpful to you in getting this issue resolved. This is how the forums work.
For example, if a response mentioned "VM generation has no effect on the vNIC." and that pointed you in the direction of troubleshooting networking instead of wasting your time looking into VM generations, that may be considered "Helpful"
If a response mentioned "Make sure you're using valid IPv4 settings" and indeed you ended up having invalid IP settings such as a duplicate IP, this may be considered "Answer"

  • Hyper-v Role in Windows Server 2012 foundation and Essentials

    Hello,
I have seen that the two low cost version of Windows Server 2012 essential and Foundation) will not support hyper-v. Can you please tell me what it means exactly :
Can you please tell me what is possible :
-The server can not be installed as a hyper-v  guest (probably yes)
-The hyper-v role can not be installed on the server (so I have to rely on vmware)?
    - Hyper-v role can be installed but there is no free license included with the server.
    Thank you
    Marc

I suppose then, you would have to install Windows 8 and Hyper-V as your guest or core.
Then run your Server 2012 Foundation under Win8.  which has 512GB Memory Limit.
It seems asinine that you cannot install this role on Foundation, but seemingly you could work around it with Win8.  (Or Sun Virtual Box (free) (or VmWare(Free).
So load up a dozen Win8Pro virutal sessions on that Win8 VirtualBox with up to 512GB Memory and Create your own Ghetto Remote Desktop Server with Foundation and Windows 8.   ;)
What good is it if your can't run Hyper-V and Remote desktop services?  Those are the two apps small business need most.  But Microsoft strips it out, calls it a DEAL  (Essentials and Foundation) , yet if you want the good stuff, you're gonna
have to buy Server 2012 Standard anyhow, + the CALs.
So you are hooked into this "deal" by Microsoft Special Offer.   Its special alright, because you get to buy it twice.  The stripped down version that come with your server, then the full version when you discover Foundatoin and Essentials gives
you AD, and thats it.  Nothing Else.  No "deal"
    Remember:
All you get with Foundation or Essentials is AD and Group Policy.
You cannot load RDP on Foundation or Essentials
You cannot load Exchange on a DC, or Foundation or Essentials
You cannot load Exchange and RDP on the same box.
You cannot have Remote Web Apps if you load RDP on your DC.
You cannot win with Microsoft.  No worthwhile "deal" has ever come out of the city of Redmond.
The internet is a one-way money pipeline to Microsoft.
Its three times the work, three times the cost and requires three servers licenses to do with 2012, what you could do with one 2008R2 license.
Might as well purchase 2 Server 2013 Standard Editions if you want:
    1.) Active Directory
2.) Remote Desktop and Remote Apps
    3.) Your own Exchange Server
You are better off installing a NAS if all you need is a file server.
Why bother with Foundation or Essentials?  Its a "Gimmick-ware"

  • Adding second domain controller in Windows server 2012 R2

Hello, our primary domain controller is currently on a machine that has Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. We are planning to setup a second domain controller as a failover to our primary domain controller. My question is, can we have a secondary domain
controller on a Windows Server 2012 R2 even if our primary domain controller is on a machine that has Windows Server 2008 R2?

I think I found the answer to my question.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd464018(v=ws.10).aspx
"In Windows Server 2012, Adprep.exe is integrated into the AD DS installation process and runs automatically as needed. For example, when you install the first domain controller that runs Windows Server 2012 into an existing domain and forest, then adprep
/forestprep and adprep /domainprep automatically run and report the results of the operations.
Some organizations may prefer to run Adprep.exe separately in advance of an AD DS installation. For this reason, Adprep.exe is also included in the \Support\Adprep folder of the operating system disk.
In Windows Server 2012, there is only one 64-bit version of Adprep.exe. It can be run remotely from any server that runs a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012. The computer where you run it can be either
    domain-joined or in a workgroup.
The version of Adprep.exe in Windows Server 2012 includes new syntax and parameter options in order to run it remotely. For more information, see
    Adprep."
For more information about the objects and containers that are created when the schema is extended to support Windows Server 2012, see

  • Adding non-local NAS to Windows Server 2012 R2 (Essentials Enabled) Server Listing

Okay, I'm new at this, so I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question. In short: I'm running WS 2012 R2 (with the Essentials role installed) and the sever is connected to a network that also has a Linux-based NAS (a D-Link DNS-323) connected
to it. I want to be able to add the NAS server to the server listing (in the server manager) with the ultimate goal of making the NAS files available remotely through the WS Remote Web Access (RWA).
Here's the long description of my problem: I'm trying to set up a remote access point for me and my family so we can access our documents and media when we are not on the local network. The NAS comes with a built in FTP server, but FTP is not secure enough
for my needs. A lot of the people that will be accessing my home network remotely are not very computer savvy, so I need to make it as easy as possible to access and use (ie. I don't want the end user to have to install/code anything on their machine to be
able to get to the home files). Ideally this would be the RWA interface, with its simple login screen and GUI. I have set up the RWA, so now the only problem is making the root of the NAS a visible file on there. I have the NAS as a network (mapped) drive
on the server, so the server can 'see' the NAS, but I don't know how to make it 'seen' in the RWA.
Any ideas? Is setting this up even possible? If so, how would I go about doing it? If not, does anyone know of a good workaround?

    Hi,
In general, if the NAS files are local, you can create shared folder on the server in Remote Web Access and then upload the NAS files to the folder.
However, according to your description, it seems that the NAS files are not local and I am afraid that you may cannot achieve that in Remote Web Access.
    Best regards,
    Susie

What I have done to try to troubleshoot this issue is:
    Reinstalled DPM - No sucess
Restarted the Hyper-v Host - No sucess
I'm at the point where I am out of ideas and google hasn't given me much.
    /Joseph

    i have the same error.
"vssadmin list writers" shows last error unknown for all writers
    disk space is sufficient
ntbackup of systemdrive and systemstate runs fine.
i installed KB940349 which fixes some vss related issues but the problem is still there.
    any ideas?
    Thanks.
When you have vssadmin reporting unknown error the only way to reset the vsswriters (as I understand it please correct me if I'm wrong :) ) is to restart the machine. The Fellenator is correct, make use that the vsswriter is working correctly since this
is the main function DPM is using when taking backup. He's also right in saying that it's outside the scope! Create a new thread on your error, then you will get much better responce!

  • Requirement to have 3 hyper-v in Windows Server 2012 R2 Std

    Hi,
I want to configure three Hyper-V in my Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.
    1. ERP System
    2. Mail Server
    3. AD
What requirement or license do I need to have?
    Thank You.

as per my knowledge if you want to use 3 Application you can run one application on Host and other 2 Application on virtual instances.
    that is not accurate.
As per MS documentation, if you run two virtual instances, the host (hypervisor) may only be used for hypervisor functions, it may not be used for applications.
    http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/briefs/virtual-licensing.aspx
    Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard
All physical processors need to be licensed. Each license covers up to two physical processors.
You may run the server software in one physical OSE and in up to two virtual OSEs for each license you assign. If you run all of the permitted instances the instance in the physical OSE can only be used to manage the virtual OSEs.

Issues that  I have are that when trying to use the Dashboard integration it gives an error that is not finding any exchange server on the network.
And the other one is that the Exchange Service Accounts are all at the Users in the Dashboard this didnt happened on the Essentials R1.
Any patch or update please would be great if not I would have to go back to Essentials R1 with 2012 R2 wich was working perfect!!

  • Is there an application to monitor users who log into Windows Server 2012 R2?

I'm looking at Family Safety Feature in Windows 8 and like what they can do.  I have a request to monitor, track users who log into Windows Server 2012 R2 to see how many users login, how long each login is for each user so a monthly report can be generated.
    1.  I just wonder if Windows Essential 2012 can be used for this purpose or not.  If it can, is Windows Essential 2012 a feature can be added or installed on Windows Server 2012 R2?
    2.  If Window Essential 2012 cannot be used for this purpose, is there any feature in Windows Server 2012 R2 that can be used for this purpose?
    3.  Is there any other suggestions?
    Thank you for your help.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Hien Phan

    Hi Hien,
    Anything updates?
It seems that there is no feature can do that. I agree with Tim that you can check the event logs. In general, the event 4624 would be created when a user was logged on, and the event 4634 would be created when a user account was logged
    off.

  • Problems PXE booting Gen 2 Virtual Machines after Upgrading to Windows Server 2012 R2

    My Current Setup:
I have two virtual machines set up with Hyper V on my Windows Server 2012 Server.
VM1: Configured to boot from an ISO file and runs Clonezilla server.
VM2: Configured to PXE boot using a legacy network adapter, and with a passthrough 250Gb hard disk.
These two VMs are connected to an external Virtual Switch, which allows physical machines to PXE boot to the Clonezilla server.
For the past few months I have been using this setup for two purposes:
    1. To clone physical machines to the Clonezilla virtual server (as a backup).
    2. To restore those image to the second VM if I find that need to get access to the files on the original image..
This has worked perfectly, except for the fact that the speed of the legacy network adapter on the second VM (which is required to PXE boot) is very slow. But I know this is because of the limitations in how the legacy adapter works...
    Now my problem:
I found out that Gen 2 VMs allow you to PXE boot without having use a legacy network adapter, allowing me to image back to the VM faster. So I upgraded the Server to Server 2012 R2 . I then created the same two virtual machines on the R2 server. I can still
PXE boot the Gen 1 VM to the Clonezilla Server but I cannot get the Gen 2 VMs to PXE boot properly. They get an IP address from the Clonezilla Server but then just stop with the following screen. (note: I have disabled the Secure Boot).
Are Gen 2 VMs unable to pull down images from anything other than a WDS Server?

    Hi J,
    >>Unfortunately WDS is not a solution for us as it is dependent on the PC being part of a domain
If you would like to make the client not join to the domain, please check the box before “Do not join the client to a domain after an installation.”  In addition, make sure not to set the client to the domain in the unattend file and do not prestage
    the computer in AD. "

  • Windows Server 2012/2012R2 NIC Teaming Mode

    Hi,
    Question 1:
In Windows Server 2012 the following teaming mode was recommended for Hyper-V NIC teams:
    Teaming mode: Switch Independent
    Load balancing mode: Hyper-V Port
    All Adapers Active
In a session at TechEd 2014 it was stated that Dynamic is the new recommendation for Windows Server 2012 R2. However, a Microsoft PFE stated a few weeks ago that he would still recommend Hyper-V Port for Windows Server 2012 R2. What is your opinions around
    this?
    Question 2:
We have a Hyper-V Failover Cluster which isn`t migrated to 2012 R2 yet, it`s running 2012. In this cluster we use Switch Independent/Hyper-V Port for the team. We also use converged networking, having 2 physical adapters bound to the NIC team, as well as
3 virtual adapters in the management OS for management, CSV and Live Migration. Recently one of the team NICs failed, and this incident also caused the cluster membership on the affected node to go offline even though the other team NIC was
connected. Is this expected behaviour? Would the behaviour be different if 2012 R2 with Dynamic mode was being used?

    Hello,
    As for question number 1:
For Hyper-V workload it's recommended to use Dynamic with
    Switch Independent mode. Why?
This configuration will distribute the load based on the TCP Ports address hash as modified by the Dynamic load balancing algorithm. The Dynamic load balancing algorithm will redistribute flows to optimize team member bandwidth utilization so individual
flow transmissions may move from one active team member to another.  The algorithm takes into account the small possibility that redistributing traffic could cause out-of-order delivery of packets so it takes steps to minimize that possibility.
The receive side, however, will look identical to Hyper-V Port distribution.  Each Hyper-V switch port’s traffic, whether bound for a virtual NIC in a VM (vmNIC) or a virtual NIC in the host (vNIC), will see all its inbound traffic arriving on a single
    NIC.
This mode is best used for teaming in both native and Hyper-V environments except when:
    1) Teaming is being performed in a VM,
    2) Switch dependent teaming (e.g., LACP) is required by policy, or
    3) Operation of a two-member Active/Standby team is required by policy.
    As for question number 2:
The Switch Independent/Hyper-V Port will send packets using all active team members distributing the load based on the Hyper-V switch port number.  Each Hyper-V port will be bandwidth limited to not more than one team member’s bandwidth because the port
is affinitized to exactly one team member at any point in time.
In all cases where this configuration was recommended back in Windows Server 2012 the new configuration in 2012 R2, Switch Independent/Dynamic, will provide better performance.
Microsoft recommend for a clustered Hyper-V deployment
in Windows server 2012 to use Switch Independent/Hyper-V Port as you mentioned and to configure
Hyper-V QoS that applies to the virtual switch. (Configure minimum bandwidth in
weight mode instead of in bits per second and Enable and configure QoS
    for all virtual network adapters
Did you apply QoS on the Converged vSwitch after you
created the team?? However Nodes are considered down if they do not respond to 5 heartbeats. The Switch Independent/Hyper-V Port does not cause the cluster to goes down if one NIC failed. The issue is somewhere else and not in the teaming mode
    that you choose.
    Hope this help.

  • Windows Server 2012 Essential Role

I am running Win2k12 R2, and have available the essential role. Can someone explain what feature would I gain from having this role?

fyi, there is a forum specifically for Essentials:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/home?forum=winserveressentials
And here is a brief explanation of the features gained with Essentials:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2012/07/17/windows-server-2012-essentials-feature-list.aspx
For small networks data protection (pc backup to the Essentials Server) and Anywhere Access are probably the two standouts.  The SKU for Essentials only is limited to 25 users and 50 devices to be backed up.  The Essential Role expands this to
"about" 100 users or devices, although there are seemingly no hard limits.
Here is a third party listing of the "cool" things about the Essentials role in a server domain.
    http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/10-things/10-cool-new-features-in-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials/
A little research will turn up lots of articles to help you form your policies in your network.

  • New Windows Server 2012 unable connect to Netlogon Service or update DNS records

Hi everybody, all of my Windows Servers 2012 decided to collapse after innocuous group policy update that was meant to make user passwords more secure.
The AD and DNS seem to be functioning "normally", I am able to add new Windows7 and Windows Server 2008 machines to the domain, I can see them in listed in the AD and DNS record are update correctly, however, as soon as I try to join Windows Server
    2012 it breaks.
The event log is littered on the new server with:
The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
    with settings:
               Adapter Name : {DB7F73CE-E011-4F3C-BEBC-2CE7A871DF51}
               Host Name : CHEETAH
               Primary Domain Suffix : somedomain.com
               DNS server list :
    192.168.0.5
Sent update to server : <?>
               IP Address(es) :
    192.168.0.15
The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the update request it sent to the DNS server timed out. The most likely cause of this is that the DNS server authoritative for the name it was attempting to register or update is not running
    at this time.
You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its settings by typing 'ipconfig /registerdns' at the command prompt. If problems still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
    and
Name resolution for the name _ldap._tcp.Default-First-Site-Name._sites.dc._msdcs.somedomain.com. timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.
When I try to ping the primary DC (WS2003) it fails, the Secondary DC (WS2012) responds.
The >nltest /sc_query:somedomain.com on Windows Servers 2012 returns:
    Flags: 0
    Trusted DC Name
    Trusted DC Connection Status Status = 1311 0x51f ERROR_NO_LOGON_SERVERS
    The command completed successfully
yet it works on all other machines.
I tried removing 2012 servers from the domain and rejoining - without success. The cookie crumbled when I added two new installations of Windows Server 2012 & 2008 and 2008 worked fine but 2012 showed same symptoms.
There is one peculiar thing that I had noticed on all Windows 2012 machines, it constantly showing "Workplace Connection - Connecting" in the networks pane on the right side of the screen, which I can't say i ever noticed before.
Unfortunately, the secondary DC is a multihoming server with Direct Access role - I am not sure if this may play some part but our existing configuration worked for a year now without any problems. Issue appeared when I changed the password complexity rule,
which boggles the mind. I wonder if there has been some other changes in GPO that did not propagate from years ago and finally comeback to break things.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
    wmin

Hello Ace, i wish you a Happy New Year! I hope your break was enjoyable and filled with cheer.
In the end I had to bite the bullet and reinstall all troublesome servers. Your recommendations from above removed some serious problems with the DA and DNS resolution.
I was able to attach new server to the domain without any problems and begin painful process of rebuild.
I have promoted TIGER to full DC controller role, but having some issues with replication. Although running >repadmid /showrepl gives positive
feedback, the sysvol folder on the secondary DC is empty.
Also there is a couple of warnings in the event log:
    Event ID 4012
    Log Name: DNS Server
    Source: DNS-Server-Service
The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed. The DNS server service cannot start until the initial
synchronization is complete because critical DNS data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller. If events in the AD DS event log indicate that there is a problem with DNS name resolution, consider adding the IP address of another DNS server
for this domain to the DNS server list in the Internet Protocol properties of this computer. This event will be logged every two minutes until AD DS has signaled that the initial synchronization has successfully completed.
    - which has not repeated since 3rd of Jan.
These events occur on the primary DC every few minutes:
    Event ID 1030
    Source: Userenv
    Log Name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Windows cannot query for the list of Group Policy objects. Check the event log for possible messages previously logged by the policy engine that describes the reason for this.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
    Event ID 1058
    Source: Userenv
    Log Name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=somedomain,DC=com. The file must be present at the location <\\somedomain.com\sysvol\somedomain.com\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini>.
(The network name cannot be found. ). Group Policy processing aborted.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Should sysvol folder be shared on the secondary DC? Another interesting thing to point out is that
    \\somedomain.com\sysvol\somedomain.com\Policies\ can be access
from all other machines except the DC1.
    Cheers!
    kind regards,
    wmin

  • Windows Server 2012 enable memory Turbo boost

    Hello guys.
I have a Sony Vaio VPC-F113FX notebook with Quad Core Intel i7 processor with 8GB of RAM.
It is installed a Windows Server 2012 Standard.
I bought an SD card of 64 GB and intended to use the Turbo Boost feature in memory, only this option is not displayed in the properties of the operating system memory card. Can you help me configure or enable this feature in Windows Server 2012.
    Thanks
Obrigado por contactar o fórum Microsoft Technet!

    Hi Hezequias,
Thanks for posting. The Turbo Boost feature is just provide by Intel can cab be obly used on the Intel i5 and Intel i7.
As you mentioned that you used a 64GB SD card and intended to use the Turbo Boost feature, so I guess you might talked about the Ready Boost.
Ready Boost is a feature provide by Microsoft, Ready Boost is a disk caching software component which allows any compatible mass storage device to be used as a hard-drive memory cache for the purpose of increasing random read access
speed to the  hard drive. Potentially compatible ReadyBoost devices include USB flash drives, flash memory,solid-state drivers(SSDs), and SD cards. There is a limitation of 32 GB per ReadyBoost device.
However the Ready Boot feature was just supported by the Microsoft Clients(such as windows 7) but not the server edition.
So the feature can't be used on windows server 2012 standard operation system.
    Hope it helps.
If you have any concerns, feel free to post back.
    Best Regards,
    Elaine
