Address Book freezing with Smart Groups - how to delete them?

Hi guys,
I made some Smart Groups in AB to get ready for iPhone 3G, and one of them has another smart group as a criterion – Address Book really doesn't like this, and freezes every time I try to click on that group. That's fine, I just want to delete, but you have to actually have a group selected in Address Book to get the contextual delete menu, and of course AB freezes before I can get there.
My question: is there a .plist somewhere I can edit to clear out these two groups, or any other ideas on how to delete these two groups that crash Address Book? Thanks!

quit mail and address book and go to the directory homedirectory/Library/Application support/Address Book.
delete the file AddressBook-v22.abcddb. then go to the subfolder Metadata and delete the group cards for the smart groups in question. To quickly find them search for "groups" in that folder. when you start address book, those smart groups should be gone.

I am trying to send an email to my "groups" in hotmail but they no longer appear as they did on mt old laptop. How do I create groups.

To make a regular group, click the add ( + ) button on the bottom of the Groups page.
To make a smart group, hold down the option key and click the same button.
    Or, use the File menu.

  • 10.6 Slow - Adress Book fixed with smart group deletion

10.6 was S...L....O.....W for me. still may be, but likely connected to this issue which i have solved.
address book would take FOREVER to open. Any change would take FOREVER to log and allow to use again. activity monitor showed 100% CPU usage while it was SODing.
    SOLUTION:
deleted "smartgroups" (not all, just 2 of 6) and address book went back to normal.
hopefully this solves ALL my problems.

Well that suggestion from the site referenced above about tearing the OD down, deleting the slapd.conf files and bringing it back up didn't work. 10.5 servers still see changes in OD as they happen and 10.6 servers don't see the change until around 10 minutes later.
Anyone run across this and fixed it?

  • Hundreds of my email addresses that were in my personal address book have disappeared. I did not delete them and I would like to recover them. Help!

Hundreds of email addresses have suddenly disappeared from my personal address book on Thunderbird. Gone. Previously, I would begin to type in a name and the system would complete it, now that is only possible if the email is stored in the address book. Some email addresses remained, but most have been wiped out. What happened? Where did they go and are they recoverable? This happened within the past week. Thanks for your help!

First, don't try to find and reimport or move photos via the My Photos search in the left hand pane of a Finder window.  That's a sure way to further damage a library.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Address Book Freezes

I have a new iMac. My wife recently created a new smart mailbox into which she added multiple addresses. Since then we have had limited function with Address Book. Adding an address or using one for email causes the program to freeze requiring near constant usage of the "Force Quit" function. When the Ad Book is opened with Mail it too freezes requiring "Force Quit". Without the Ad Book the email works well.
Does anyone know the cause and, if so, could you post a solution. Thank you

    Welcome to the discussions, aeraz.
Please explain more clearly "created a new smart mailbox into which she added multiple addresses".
Does this mean: in the Mail program there is a smart mailbox, with multiple parameters such as "any recipient contains [email protected]" or in the Address Book program there is a smart group
with multiple parameters such as "card contains aeraz".
In either case, have you tried deleting the smart box or group?

    AK,
Thank you for your reply. It was nice to wake up and not feel isolated with a problem that reminds me, excuse the comparison, of Windows. In answer to your questions:
    1. I was referring to a group.
    2. The application freezes whether it is launched by itself or through another application (i.e. Mail).
    3. Any application used in conjonction with address book freezes
    4. Any attempt to remove the group provoked a freeze. This has led me to believe (perhaps erroneously) that the creation of this group could be the source of the problem. Why?
    Thank you

  • Address Book and Mail - Using Groups for e-mail

I've noticed something strange about Mail and Address Book in Tiger:
I created a new Group in Address Book. The Group contains people who are involved in a project. I have names, home addresses and phone numbers for eveyone, but a few people do not have e-mail. When a try using this Group to send out an e-mail message, Mail warns me that John Smith does not appear to have a valid e-mail address. I can't send the message unless I select only those in the group who have e-mail addresses and only send to them. This is a pain.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug in Tiger's Address Book and Mail.app? How can I get around this? I have several Groups like this that contain entries with no e-mail.

It's not a bug in Address Book, it's a limitation. Your only way to get around that is to either remove those from the group, or give them all the same email address; i.e., send those to you so you are reminded that they didn't get the email and you have to notify them some other way.
And of course, when sending to more than one person, never put the recipients in the To or CC field; they should always go in the BCC field.

  • Address Book freeze or crash when printing labels/envelopes

I am trying to print mailing labels or envelopes from Address Book. I can print lists but everytime I try to print mailing labels it appears to go into a "sorting" loop and will not respond. When I try to print envelopes and hit print, it crashes. I have read about problems with smart groups but I have no smart groups. The last time I printed mailing labels I had no problem but my operating system at that time was Tiger. Any help?

I created a second entry with the spouse's name, and then to be more selective in who I send them to (so that it isn't sent to both Jones'), I added the word "Christmas" to the notes for one of them only, repeated this process for all the contacts that I needed to. Then create a SmartGroup that is looking for Christmas in the notes and print labels for that group.
Yeah, that zoom feature was completely out of whack when I was doing this too; actually, the preview pane was entirely off at times.
Another useful thing would be to be to able to specify which spot on the sheet of labels to start printing; if I've got a partially used sheet, then its a total pain to be able to start printing on the 8th label down in the 2nd row; I'd have to create bogus entries for Mr. Aaa Aaa and copy that as many times as I need to so that the printing is correctly aligned. Pretty big oversight I must say.

  • Old Address Book syncing with iPad via iTunes!

Forgive me if I'm going over old ground but there seem to be a number of threads to do with Address Book syncing, but I haven't managed to find a definitive answer, so here goes ...
I have an iPad [3] under iOS.5.1and an OSX.6.8 quad-core i7 iMac and I sync them via iTunes.
Everything, absolutley everything, syncs just fine, Calendars, Photos, etc. etc. - except, that is, for Address Book and Contacts.
The iMac Address Book is fully up to date, yet the version on the iPad is not only an old version, but a version which hasn't been current since before the iPad was bought and first sync'd!
    Bizarre!
In an attempt to correct this, I unchecked the iTunes "Info > Sync Contacts button and resync'd.
The ipad Contacts book was empty - which is what I expected.
i then checked the button again and resync'd - and the old Address Book data was resync'd!
What is clear is that the iPad's version reflects that which is in the iTunes "Selected Groups" window and not what is actually in the Address Book, so I presume that the error lies with iTunes and/or my iMac and not the ipad iteself.  The iPad is, after all, only reflecting what iTunes tells it.
So, my friends, why does iTunes not show the current Address Book indiviudal cards and Groups?
From where should it be getting it's information and how can I ensure that it does get the latest version?
If there is a rogue old copy somewhere, what could it be called and how can I find it and delete it and then, perhaps amend the default path to the correct version?
All software and apps on both devices are fully up to date at the time of posting this heartfelt crie de coure!
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Well, eventually I had to go to the Level 2 (or whetver they are called) AppleCare geeks to get this resolved, as the "normal" guys couldn't resolve it.
After much "try this ...", "try that ..." and "try the other ..." they narrowed the problem down to a corrupt Address Book Group header in my iMac's Address Book.
It appears impossible to find out just which of my 55 Group headers was corrupt and the only way around it was to export all Contacts individually as vCards, dlete every Group and individual card entry in the Addreess Book and reimport all the vCards - and then somewhat tediously recreate all my Groups again from scratch.
It took  around two and a half hours on the phone to AppleCare and forever to recreate the Groups, but at least it solved the problem!
Whether this helps anyone else i cannot tell, but if you have a bizarre syncing pronblem it might be worth looking at this as a solution.
But take my tip:  before embarking on this, make an entry in the Notes section of each card so that you know to which Group or Groups a card belongs because it was a feat of memory way beyond me to remeber all of them and I still have the odd orphan in there awaiting a home!

  • Address book freeze

Since upgrading to Lion and iCloud the Address Book freezes on my MacAir.  By freeze I mean that it will not allow me to use search bar and though I can manually scroll to contact, I must double click on contact to open in a separate window as it will not open to that page.
I spent 2-hours on phone with tech support, finally discovered that deleting address book info and then letting iCloud repopulate contacts served to fix the problem.  It happened a few more times and I thought I had the process memorized but then all was well for a while until it just happened again and I cannot recall how to 'fix' it.
The program seems unstable and I would rather not have to 'fix' the same recurrent problem, but I need Address Book to work and will take even the short-term fixes.
Isn't anyone else having this problem?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

my birthday events for only some of my contacts are showing up twice in my iPhone. They are not showing up twice tho on my iMac. No, I do not have duplicate names in my address book either. Any idea how to fix that?

I have uploaded the InDesign file so that you can take a closer look at:
    http://www.hsdesign.comuf.com/downloads/
    The file is called "Template_File.indd"
So, as discussed the main issues are:
    1) The TOC doesn't generate all the listings (only those with the applied paragraph style "Heading 1 - Appendix")
    2) When I try to create a new pargraph style and apply it to existing or new text, it reads the pargraph style in the Paragraph Style menu, but the style doesn't actually apply.
Hopefully you can figure something out from this. I really appreciate your help.
    Thanks!

  • How do i import and sync my icloud / iphone contacts into address book on my macbook pro, how do i import and sync my icloud / iphone contacts into address book on my macbook pro

    HELP
how do i import and sync my icloud / iphone contacts into address book on my macbook pro, how do i import and sync my icloud / iphone contacts into address book on my macbook pro
Runnig 10.6.8 on a MacBook PRO.....

The easiest fix if you're running Snow Leopard is to export all your contacts, then import them into something like google (I already had a gmail account), and then just use google to sync your contacts instead of icloud (via the sync with Google button in the address book settings).
Its a bit sluggish to update, but it works well.  You can then point your iphone, and other iOS devices to use google for contacts too.
If Apple don't want to look after their customers, other companies will gladly do so....

  • Address Book Sync with iPhone

My Address book is not being recognized by iTunes. None of the groups are showing up in the info section of the iTunes, iPhone syncing panel. Because of this, my contacts are not being synced. Also, it is hanging up (or taking along time) to sync my calendars.

I had the same problem. I tried all the typical suggestions, including:
    • resetting sync history in iSync
    • trashing iSync folder in ~/Library/Application Support
    • resetting iPhone to factory defaults
    • exporting Address Book archive and reimporting into Address Book
None of these worked for me. What did finally work was this:
    1. Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes (so you can edit the sync settings in iTunes after the following steps, and before doing another sync.)
    2. Open AddressBook preferences. Click on the vCard tab. Select vCard format 3.0 and tick 'Export notes in vCards'.
    3. Export vCards for each group in Address Book, including the 'All' group. (Make sure you name each vCard file with the name of the group so you know which is which later.)
    4. Quit AddressBook
    5. Trash AddressBook folder from ~/Library/Application Support (or move it to another folder as a backup)
    6. Launch AddressBook. All your old groups and cards should be gone.
    7. Import the 'All' vCard file. (This restores all your cards but not your groups.)
    8. For each of your original groups, create a new empty group and drag the corresponding vCard file from the Finder into the new group. (This just saves you having to remember which cards belong in which groups.) AddressBook will let you know that their are duplicate cards (since the 'All' vCard was previously imported) which is fine — the cards are identical so none of them change.
    9. In iTunes, select your iPhone and click on the Info tab. Scroll down to the 'Advanced' section and tick 'Contacts' (so that all contacts are replaced with the new ones.) If you want to only sync selected groups to your iPhone tick 'Selected groups' in the 'Contacts' section.
    10. Click the 'Apply' button to sync groups and contacts to your iPhone.

  • Address book Sync with Lion Server

    Hello,
I have set up a Mac Mini with Lion Server and have OD users (no local user on the server). When I login "locally" (using the OD user account), I have my full environment, everything seems to work ok. Also the sync from my iPhone seems to work (only some calendar errors, sync doesn't come up with address book errors). But, as I now have noted, there is not really a sync of the address book. I have an old version of my address book on the server.
How do I properly set up that:
    - my iPhone syncs with my OD user's address book only
    whereas
    -  central address book is kept on the OD server as well (without any sync)?
Or did I get something wrong regarding the concept of running an address book on the Lion server ... maybe it's not possible to sync the iPhone to an OD user's address book?
    Best regards,
    Olaf.

Have you tried rebuilding the accounts in SystemPrefs>Mail, Contacts and Calendars?
Are the machines bound to the directory?
Try setting it up in a fresh account on the broken Mac.
Try setting it up on a different Mac.
    Hope this helps,
    Brian

  • Syncing Address Book contacts with iPod

I know some people will think this post should be in the iPod forum but I have realised that it is not my iPod beccasue I tried using a different iPod and the same problem happened. Anyway...the problem is that when I choose to sync Address Book contacts with iPod it comes up with this message:
    No contacts available
Contact syncinig cannot be enabled because there are no contacts available. Do you want to open Address Book and create contacts now?
And gives me the options: Cancel and Open Address Book
I have tried deleting several different preferences for iTunes, Address Book and iSync (just incase).
I don't know what else to do, I know I can manually add my contacts by exporting them all as a vCard but it would be so much easier if iTunes could do it. Please help if you know anything!

I've got Calenders syncing again, not sure how I did it. I deleted the one of the folders in /Users/Alex/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/Local/clientdata/
I found that in each folder there is a clientname.txt file with the name of what data is in the folder e.g. iCal, Safari, Keychain, Mail.
I deleted the iCal one and iTunes seems to be syncing it now. So I looked for a folder with Address Book in the clientname.txt file but there wasn't one. I am wondering whether that's the reason!
