Admin. name invalid on shutdown when another account is logged in

I have no problem logging in or shutting down with my administrator name and password--unless another account (someone else in my family) is also logged in. When I try to shut down from my account my user name is flagged as "invalid"--even though it is correct. I need log out, then go to the other open account and shut down from there. What gives?

I too was vexed with this exact problem. After hours of much hair-pulling and trial and error, I discovered that my other non-administrator user (who was logged in at the same time I was) had iChat set to automatically launch at his start-up. As soon as I turned off this option on his account, I was able to shut down without any password weirdness. So my advice is to see if you or any other user have applications set to launch at start-up, and then turn them all off.

    I like my Mac to shut itself down each evening at 9pm and then switch on at 8.30am - which is easy to set within Energy Saver.
    However, if I have another user account open (which I often has), the computer will not shutdown unless an Administer's name and password is entered. This means that I have to be there to do this - which negates the reason for having a scheduled shutdown.
    I know that no data will be lost if the other account is closed down, so is there any way around this?

    Not that I am aware of. Data could be lost if someone is in the middle of work and the Mac shuts down without giving the user and opportunity to save the work.
    Why do you want to do this? Why not just leave the Mac on all the time? Are you trying to force your kids off the Mac at a predetermined time?

  • I don't recall always having to enter admin. name and p/w when doing updates. Is this req't only for certain software. I am a bit paranoid now with the Mac Defender lurking about.

    When completing the software updates I can't remember always having to enter administrator name and password. Maybe it's just been automatic on my part but now I rethink the process when I am asked to enter this info since the Mac Defender malware became an issue with Mac. Just wanted to know if this procedure occurs with all software updates or is it selective based on the type of update? This time is concerned Airport. Thanks for any insight.

    Are you running as an Admin User or non-Admin? ie. have you set your Mac up with multiple user accounts - one as an Admin and one as a Standard user?
    For security, you are better off having an Admin user account that has Admin privileges and a Standard user account that you use from day to day with standard privileges. When you install system updates you will be required to enter an Admin name and password, and any software that needs access to the system will require an Admin name and password, but anything that you install just for your user account that doesn't require total system access will be able to be dragged and dropped into your Application folder as per usual.
    MacDefender runs in a web browser - that should be a huge red flag! If you see a warning when you are running Safari or another web browser close the browser window or Force Quit it. (under the Apple Menu => Force Quit...) In Safari Preferences untick Open "safe" files after downloading. (It will prevent an installer from automatically launching if something nasty is downloaded to your machine.) MacDefender and its variants attempt to trick people into installing stuff that will compromise their system. If something pops up unannounced on your machine that you didn't download, close it and delete it.

    I'd add, keep your software up to date. Especially Adobe's Flash Plug-in as this is no longer supplied in system updates by Apple and could become an attack vector in the future. Always download software from reputable sources - ie. when downloading the Flash plug-in, get it from Adobe directly - don't follow a link from a website that tells you your version of Flash is out of date.
    Enable your Firewall in System Preferences => Security => Firewall. Click on the Advanced button and Enable Stealth Mode too.
    Also under:
    System Preferences => Security => General.
    Disable Automatic Login. Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane. Use secure virtual memory. Automatically update safe downloads list.
    Educate yourself.

  • How to release audio when another account has control?

    Sometimes I find that there's no audio available when I log in. Invariably, I find it's because another account on the machine has tied up the audio (e.g. if flash player is running with audio in Safari).
    That account is dormant, but still it blocks audio from working in the account I'm in.
    Everything comes right if I log that user out, but then I get complaints later of their apps and work being all shut down when they come back. So I shouldn't have to do this. Doing it is a nuisance for me, too, since there seems to be no good interface to check what each user is running and log them out from within my account. (I wish there were an administrators' account manager that looked a bit like ARD for this.)
    How do I get audio to work for the account that's active, without forcibly logging other users out?

    Thanks for your valuable reply. I tried to do the same as you suggested. But It simply plays the voice over as a stream regardless of the slides.
    Meant before finish to display 1st slide the 2nd voice over starts playing. By the time of displaying 10th slide it plays 15th slides voice over. This doesn't solve the purpose.
    One more point I want to add in, that is I have all the voice over for 20 slides placed in one layer and all slides are placed in one layer at certain intervals.
    Please educate me with some other solutions.

  • IPhone won't sync when any account is logged in iTunes

    As the title states, after I restored my iPhone 3G 8gb because it wouldn't sync with my computer I finally narrowed down the problem after many hours of troubleshooting to an account being logged into iTunes when the iPhone is trying to sync.
    My Desktop is running Windows Vista x64, the iPhone doesn't have any problems connecting to my Macbook Pro regardless if an account is logged into iTunes or not.
    Is there anyway to fix this?

    We have 2 iPhones and two computers, one Mac and a PC. We recently downloaded iTunes v9 and now iTunes cannot “see” either of our phones on either computer. I have contacted Apple by phone and spent over an hour trying to resolve this connection problem. The Apple rep suggested that the issue might be in the “dock” and recommended I take the phones to iPnone supplier. Incidentally I can charge the phones using the “dock” which suggests that the “dock” is not the issue.
    The iPhone supplier connected one one phone to his Mac computer and it immediately connected to and “saw” the phone. Interestingly, the supplier was only running iTunes v8. The supplier suggested there was a “patch” for iPhone to operate with itunes v9. Is this correct and if so how do I get it.
    So my problem is that I cannot ever get to the stage of "syncing".
    I have also noted on several “chat” sites people have had problems with iPhone and iTunes v9 connectivity.

  • Why trash asks admin name and pawword?

    I recently changed my macbook pro hardrive and transfered files from external hardrive to macbook pro. I have two accounts. One admin and another standard. I use daily standard account. Now when I want to trash items from folder I transfered from external drive to macbook pro I am being asked admin name and password. When I trash items which were saved later then I don't get asked admin name and password. Why is that? How can I remove that?
    Also when I want to save pdf files to folder which I transfered from external hardrive to mac I get following message:
    The file may be read-only, or another user may have it open. Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder.

    The most likely fix for this is to reset home folder permissions and ACLs

  • When I use migration assistant it won't let me use my account name that I'm signed in with.  It requires me to select a different user name and then creates a separate account where my files live.  Why can't I select the user name and account name I have?

    I'm trying to migrate my music and pictures over to my new iMac.  When I use the migration assistant it connects to my PC fine but it won't let me use the account name and username that I have created as the admin.  It requires me to create a new user account - so then I have two separate accounts to log in to which i don't want.  How do I get it to let me use the current account that I have to move my files to?

    Migration Assistant creates a new account and migrates all the information you have requested to that new account. There is no way around that. However once migrated you can move the data to the account you want to. Here are some instructions for doing so:

    hi, i'm trying to download the trial for photoshop, and when i wanted to start the set up, it said +'type an administrator's name and password to allow setup to make changes'+, so i typed in the admin name and password that i type in when i'm logging in (when turning on the macbook) and

    You've undoubtedly "lost" you admin account. To make sure open System Preference->Accounts and look at your account in the left corner and it should say "admin" below it. If it doesn't you've lost it. It's a Leopard bug.

    I had accidently changed my home name in the finder window. To fix this (so my files would show) I used NetInfo Manager to change the admin and user values. Now when I have tried to install a new program, the admin name does not show, and when trying both names (new and old) neither work with the password.
    I used the install disc to reset the password, but it didn't help. In NetInfo Manager, the password (asterixs) shows longer than the password I chose...

    To fix this (so my files would show) I used NetInfo Manager to change the admin and user values.
    If you change the name(not home) property of an administrator account without updating the membership of the admin group, that account will lose administrator access to the machine; it is possible to create a situation where there are no administrator accounts on the machine through this method. In this case, follow these instructions on one of the accounts which previously had administrator access.

    'nick' is your nickname which you entered when you set up the IRC chat. You can register your nickname by entering "/msg nickserv register <password> <email address>"
    Then when you start next time enter "/msg nickserv identify <password>"
    You can get a list of nickserv commands by entering "/msg nickserv help"

  • My flickr contact name points to another account

    When attempting to add my Flickr account to my Apple TV, it accesses another account. I enter my contact name, not my username. I tried a workaround by successfully adding one of my mutually contacts and searching their contact list for my account, and then adding that. Still points to another account. I have also tried changing my contact name at flickr.com, but attempting to add that on the Apple TV connects to exactly the same account, which is very strange. Entering the same string into the "People" search on flickr (while I am logged out) returns my account successfully.
    If anyone reading this has an Apple TV and wants to try to replicate this, my Flickr contact name is "Tom & Viv". It returns an account with the contact name "Tom & Viv" but with the additional name "Tom Nguyen", and with a flickr stream that is not mine.
    Can anyone here help? Or should I be referring to flickr for help?

    Also, the Apple TV specifically asks for "contact name" which is what it displays on contact lists too.

    I just asked the same thing and did some research. Some people have said  that the UDID code is like banned from instagram, but your account isn't. I'm able to use it on my phone but not on my iPod.

I have read that I probably should not have skipped migration in the initial set up and the problem would have been avoided but, alas, here I am. Does anyone know how I can 'migrate' all the files from one of the accounts that has been created to the other, so then I can delete it and have a single user on the computer seeing as I am the only person using it? I have read starting again, if this is the way to go, where is the best place to start 'starting again'?

    Yes definitely should see it but its not coming up (I don't think) when I log out of 2nd user and into the main account. Opening finder in the 2nd account, I can obviously find the public folder because thats where I dropped all the files, but when in the main account, it can't be found. The only public folder that comes up is the folder for that account (main account) and it does not display files I'm looking for. Frustrating....
    EDIT: Have found it through a round-about way but all music and photo and movie etc files have a red stop sign disallowing them from being transferred. Can you guess what the next question will be?
