Administrator rights - unable to obtain on new install of leopard

Hi!
I have installed Leopard (10.5) on my new macbook but have been unable to gain administrator rights..... Having contacted Apple, I was advised to use the Install DVD and re-set the password via the Utilities window. Nice idea... but when loading the instal DVD I am asked for the Administrator user name & password..... which I do not have!
Attempts to assign administrator rights to the man user (Me) via System preferences/accounts have also been unsuccessful.
Any advice on the nex steps would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Thanks.
The re-boot does not seem to work.
My macbook reverts to the sign-in options (My user account minus administrator rights) or 'guest'. I am unable to remove the sign-in request at the point of re-start. Would I be right in presuming that the sign-in request is preventing me from accessing the Mac OS install disc? Are you able to advise if the removal of sign-in authentication can be achieved without administrator rights?
thanks again!

  • New Install of Leopard OSX 10.5.6 running bad on 2005 Dual G5 2.3 why ?

Hey all, I have a 2005 Dual G5 2.3 that orig came with OSX 10 on it. I maxed out to 8 gigs of RAM. Well I went to apple and bought (OS X 10.5.6 Leopard Retail) and did a clean install. Ever since then, It crashes more than ever and sometimes when starting takes FOREVER to get to the password page. What is going on here ? I thought that once I did the clean install (erases everything) and installed new OS, it would be like its brand new. However, it kinda seems WORSE than my old OS 10.4 ? On top of that when I use disk utility and try and repair permissions. There's all kinds of code that is never repaired. Whats that about ? What can I do to make this 2005 Dual run smooth again ?
    Any help appreciated

If there are a lot of errors, perhaps the hard drive is physically failing. Perhaps it might be better to simply add a drive to the second slot and install the system on that.

reinstall the original video card to install leopard
That should work fine. In my case, that wasn't an easy option because the Mac arrived from Apple with the upgraded card in place and my client would have had to buy a video card just to install the OS.
It's been years since I had a version of MacOS that required inits for specific machines. It caught me by surprise, but was totally understandable. The machine was made after Leopard was released and it did come with a proper DVD with the required video drivers, but my client had misplaced it. His Family Pack Retail DVD was the version of MacOS that was on the shelf at Amazon at the time and normally this isn't a problem for anyone because they are always out-of-date and require the user to bring up the OS to the latest version.
I suppose Apple replaced the DVD with an newer version because of the special order status of the machine.

  • New install of Leopard 10.5.8 install

    Hi,
    Can anyone answer this question?
I have recently taken over the responsibility of looking after an OS X server that is running Leopard Server v10.5.8. The server was originally set up pretty badly in my eyes, the main problem being DNS, as the server does not respond correctly internally to its domain name. It can only be accessed using a browser via its internal ip, so quite a lot of the services are not working correctly or not at all. The plan is to get all services running properly for all sorts of things like calendaring and web hosting!
Not only is the DNS a BIG problem, but also the server was configured with everything being on one partition, so that if anything major should happen, not only does the OS go, but everything else along with it... my long term plan is to back everything up, erase and start with a fresh install over two partitions on the RAID rather than One, so that if the OS has problems on its own partition, this can be repaired if not reinstalled again without causing a problem to the work data.
After that bit of background information, back to my main question...
I have been working on an example server set-up for the past few weeks, running scenarios of which I am glad to say I have cracked everything from DNS to web hosting (although, virtual web hosting is eluding me at present, but i'll get there in the end!) with everything resolving backwards and forwards with ip names and FQDM names etc, HOWEVER and here is the crunch line..
After everything was working fine I decided to erase and wipe my example server set-up and start again (the scenario of a complete 'melt down") and now no matter how many wipes/erases and reloads of fresh/clean OS Server installs, (even zeroing out the hard drive on format) updating to v10.5.8 with all the relevant security updates, I can not get the Mail to work.... I don't quite understand how a clean set of software can not not work first time of initiation.. I would understand if it was tweaked in some way, then at least I could put it down to me changing some kind of setting, but its just the main details entered. Initial ip configurations, domain names, DNS etc, the basics to just get the Server up and running and resolving itself backwards and forwards and of course the Mail service.
I did find something regarding the fact that if you erase/zero out a drive something has to be reset in terminal, which I did, but that didn't work!
Oh, and after every update to the OS to bring it up to v10.5.8 I have restarted the OS from another drive and repaired the permissions on the drive that is running the Server OS!
I would greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions, especially if anyone else has experienced this kind of thing happened before. Not to mention this does not 'bode' well for what I have to do in the future with our main server!
Oh, and the last reinstall was last night after no matter what I tried the mail kept reporting an error of something to do with the users data storage set lower than the size of the mail messages. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact message... but lets just say that the eMail that it was trying to deliver (sent from an external eMail account) was less than 1K into a users mailbox that had nothing in it, it was completely newly installed!
    Thank you for reading :0)

  • NEW INSTALL OF LEOPARD ON eMac G4 800

    eMac G4 800, 800MHz, 256 MB RAM, 1.0 GB Memory, 60 GB HD
HD zeroed, starting from fresh;  had previously installed successfully from Panther, vets 10.4.9, using Leopard Assist.
Tried many times now using Leopard Assist to adjust the clock speed in Open Firmware, but after it has started to install, I get the "Cannot install on this computer" message.  Or the flashing ? mark/Mac icon.  I tried installing Jaguar / 10.2 but I could not "see" the Leopard disc in the finder.  I could not restart from the disc in the optical drive (holding "C" down).
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Novice, 68 years.

    According to specs:
    Maximum OS
    Mac OS X 10.4.11 (800 MHz) Mac OS X 10.5.8 (1.0 GHz)
So, you need a Tiger installer disc.

  • Outlook Connector 6.0 and Administrator rights

    Hi all!
We want to use the Sun Java System Connector for Microsoft Outlook 6.0 with Windows 2000 with Outlook XP.
To install the generated exe file as an user, he needs admin right. Afterwards we take the administrator rights from the user away. Run the user outlook, it wants to send a problem problem report to Microsoft.
If the user has administrator right, everything functions.
Thanks for your help in advance.

    Hi Jens!
To install the generated exe file as an user, he
needs admin right. Afterwards we take the
administrator rights from the user away. Run the user
outlook, it wants to send a problem problem report to
Microsoft. The solution is, to install connector.exe as local admin
an the machine. You can abort installation without providing
    user information.
After that you can install connector.exe as
    user without administrative rights.
So you need two install turns.

  • After software update and restart, acts like it's a new install?

    Greetings All,
After doing the recent software update on my son's 20" iMac C2D machine, I did the restart and once it reboots I get the "quick start" page as if it were a new install of Leopard and nothing were no user accounts set up. I can restart in target disc mode and connect to the iMac with my MBP, everything is still there, including all the recent files on the desktop. The Time Machine back up is also in tact.
Why can't it see the account and boot up? Any way to boot from the Time Machine back up? Any help is much welcomed at this point as my son needs to do some school work tonight.

By "quick start" do you mean the Setup Assistant that, among other things, lets you setup the first user account? If so, go with it. When you get to setting up that account, ensure that the "short name" exactly matches the name of the lost home folder. The new account will "adopt" that folder & you should be back in business.
FWIW... an alternative would be to setup a temporary account like "test". Once you have access to the system, you'd go to SysPrefs->Accounts and add a new user whose short name, again, matches the name of the home folder you want. In this case, it will say that a folder with that name exists & ask whether you want to use it. This method is useful if you can't remember the exact name of the folder in question - you can open the Users folder and copy the name letter for letter.

  • Moving everthing from emac to XHD b-4 new install

I have an emac 1.25 10.39 and am getting ready to do a new install of Leopard 10.5. Our main priority is moving music and photos to an XHD and bringing them back to the emac intact and in their proper folders. Anything to be aware of or to watch out for? Been putting this off because I'm afraid things won't go back to where they were.
    Thanks.
    Mr. McTev

Better is to put a bootable backup/clone onto the ext HD, ensure that it works like the original, and just upgrade the original or the backup/clone. That guarantees everything is in place, including all of your user information. See these for details:

  • Windows 7 Ultimate isn't installing on my iMac. Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition

I have a 21.5" iMac (Late 2012) running OS X Mavericks. I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate via Bootcamp but whenever i get to the setup part it goes wrong
These are the steps I followed
I selected all the options since I didn't have the drivers or an install disk
it copied the Windows 7 iso image, downloaded the support software, and saved the support software to the flash drive (8GB)
    I selected a partition size - I gave windows roughly 100GB
    and I let it install
Right now I'm at the part where it says " where do you want to install windows? I selected the bootcamp partition and formatted it. It now says
"Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information"
    WHAT DO I DO?

I had to read the apple instructions several times before they started to make sense.  I burned my iso onto a DVD and had the required USB for support software.  Are you trying to use the single USB method?
This article has a lot of info on the single usb method

  • Users with Administrator rights not being allowed to install programs.

I have 3 users in my office that are not able to download and install programs due to a security prompt that says that they are unable to install the program due to not having administrator rights. But in the users menu the user accounts are setup with

    Hi,
Are they domain administrator or local administrator? Is there any group policy restriction?

  • Is there a way to prevent an account with no administrative rights to install firefox to their local profile on Windows XP?

Our users are normally not allowed to install any programs since their user accounts do not have administrative rights to their pc's. Has this been a feature in FireFox before?
We noticed that one user was able to simply download firefox, run the installation setup, and the setup would default to install firefox under their local desktop profile instead of the usual c:\Program Files folder.
    ie. c:\Documents and Settings\userid\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla Firefox\
Is there a way to prevent this from happening? We do not want to allow our users to be able to install any programs without our knowledge.

The Skype add-in was the culprit in my case. Disabling it fixed the problem. As soon as I enable it, the problem comes back.

  • Boot Camp - Setup was unable to create a new system partition....from Windows install

Hi folks.  So I ran the boot camp wizard and made a USB install key for windows from that.  I boot to it and everything works until I get to the install.  I format the Boot Camp partition as indicated in the walkthrough and then I get "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.  See the Setup log files for more information." from the Windows installer.  What do I do?   Thanks.

just to add to the mix. . . i just got a new macbook retina.
Originally used a USB flash drive. Hit the same barrier described here.
Spent a few hours with drive unplugging / replugging silliness. No progress. Went back into OSX to attempt using an external DVD drive. There is no option for that in Bootcamp assistant now - must use USB.
Grabbed a different USB stick and started again. This time I used the other USB port on the macbook (the one on the left). Everything worked fine this time!?
You still have to go into "advanced options" and hit "format" when you get to the partition screen.
Moral of the story: different stick, different port. Sounds random. If that doesn't work, try changing your socks and putting on a hat.
    Good luck!

  • Problems using right click to open in new Tab or Window. Will not work. How do you solve this. Have v5.0 installed.

I have the latest version of Firefox installed. Version 5.0.
When searching on Google and use right-click to open in new tab or window. Keep getting blank tab.
Can somebody advise how to solve this.
    Thank you.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")
