Advantage of Oracle job over Crontab\Control-M?

Is there any advantage of having Job functionality using DBMS_JOBS over Unix crontab\control-M?
Regards,
Bhagat

In what way u need the adv. It depends on what ur application need is.
Is your oracle is installaed on Unix platform, then calling a oracle proc though a small script and putting the same in crontab provides much control over your job. Instead going to DB everytime......
Cheers.......... Bob

  • Problem in deleting backup job in Grid Control

    Hi,
    The topology and versions are as follows:
    1 windows 2003 server with Oracle Grid Control 10.2.0.4.0.
    1 windows 2003 server with Oracle Databases 10.2.0.3.
    1 windows 2003 server with Oracle Databases 10.2.0.3 - Data Guard setup
    I have tried to stop (and delete) some scheduled fullbackup jobs from Grid Control.
    The job has now status SUSPEND. I have tried to stop and delete the job, but I get the message:
    All executions of the job were stopped successfully. Currently running steps will not be stopped.
    I cannot delete the job and the job is not running.
    I have run this procedure in order to delete the job:
    DECLARE
    jguid RAW;
    BEGIN
    SELECT job_id
    INTO jguid
    FROM mgmt_job
    WHERE job_name = '<name of your job>'
    AND job_owner = '<owner of your job>';
    mgmt_job_engine.stop_all_executions_with_id(jguid,TRUE);
    COMMIT;
    END;
    With no effect. The job is still shown in Grid Control with status SUSPEND.
    I have restarted all servers and all the components in Grid Control, but the jobs will not disappear from Grid Control although they have been deleted.
    I am struggling with this for about 2 days now.
    I have search in Metalink and the internet, but I have not found anything that provides a solution.
    Any help will be very much appreciated.

  • How to Schedule Job using Database Control for SQLPLUS script?

    Hi All,
    I am using Database version 10.2. I would like to schedule a SQLPLUS script job using Database control (Not using Grid Control!). The following is the script.
    ========================================================
    define OEM_FRIENDLY=1
    define OWB_BACKGROUND=0
    set serveroutput on
    set verify off
    whenever sqlerror exit failure;
    define REPOS_OWNER='&1.'
    define LOCATION_NAME='&2.'
    define TASK_TYPE='&3.'
    define TASK_NAME='&4.'
    define SYSTEM_PARAMS='&5.'
    define CUSTOM_PARAMS='&6.'
    alter session set current_schema = &REPOS_OWNER.;
    set role owb_d_&REPOS_OWNER., owb_o_&REPOS_OWNER.;
    variable exec_return_code number;
    begin
    -- Initialize Return Code
    :exec_return_code := wb_rt_api_exec.RESULT_FAILURE;
    -- Run Task
    :exec_return_code := wb_rt_api_exec.run_task('&LOCATION_NAME.',
    '&TASK_TYPE.',
    '&TASK_NAME.',
    '&CUSTOM_PARAMS.',
    '&SYSTEM_PARAMS.',
    &OEM_FRIENDLY.,
    &OWB_BACKGROUND.);
    end;
    exit :exec_return_code;
    ===========================================================
    Is it possible to schedule SQLPLUS script with 6 different parameters? If yes then how can I schedule for monday to friday or only for Saturday and sundays.
    Please provide brief steps.
    Thanks for your help in advance.
    - Mehul

    Let me explain to you about scheduler.
    You can schedule a pl/sql stored procedure TEST_S as follows...
    Begin
    dbms_scheduler.create_job(
    job_name=>'MY_JOB',
    Job_Type=>'STORED_PROCEDURE',
    job_action=>'TEST_S',
    start_date=>sysdate,
    repeat_interval=>'freq=monthly;BYDAY=MON,TUE,WED,THU,FRI',
    end_date=>null');
    END;
    You can also also execute o/s script like .bat or .sh. For this job type should be EXECUTABLE.
    Example of converting a .sql script in .bat script...
    insert.sql
    insert into dept values(50,'IT','LONDON');
    exit
    insert.bat
    sqlplus scott/tiger @insert.sql
    Executing now...
    C:\Documents and Settings>insert.bat
    C:\Documents and Settings>sqlplus scott/tiger @insert.sql

  • Need to set a job in crontab

    Hi
    Need to setup a job in crontab to run every 30 min from 8.00 am to 10.pm including both the timings.Any one can suggest it how that can be acheived?

    Hi,
    I have some good examples that describe how to set crontab execution times:
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_crontab_examples.htm
    Take a minute and read the basic rules. At forst it looks cryptic, but it's easy once you understand the columns:
    field allowed values
    minute 0-59
    hour 0-23
    day of month 1-31
    month 1-12
    day of week 0-7 (both 0 and 7 are Sunday)
    user Valid OS user
    command Valid command or script.
    The date fields can contain a number of patterns to form complex schedules, as shown below.
    * - All available values or "first-last".
    3-4 - A single range representing each possible from the
    start to the end of the range inclusive.
    1,2,5,6 - A specific list of values.
    1-3,5-8 - A specific list of ranges.
    0-23/2 - Every other value in the specified range.
    In Red Hat Linux, the month and day names can be used to specify these fields. The following examples show a selection of possible schedules:
    30 * * * * root echo "Runs at 30 minutes past the hour."
    45 6 * * * root echo "Runs at 6:45 am every day."
    45 18 * * * root echo "Runs at 6:45 pm every day."
    00 1 * * 0 root echo "Runs at 1:00 am every Sunday."
    00 1 * * 7 root echo "Runs at 1:00 am every Sunday."
    00 1 * * Sun root echo "Runs at 1:00 am every Sunday."
    30 8 1 * * root echo "Runs at 8:30 am on the first day of every month."
    00 0-23/2 02 07 * root echo "Runs every other hour on the 2nd of July."
    Hope this helps. . .

  • Physical standby database Version 11g Creation over grid control 10g

    We are useing oracale 11g enterprise edition and want to create a physical standby database on another machine:
    On primary host we've installed "standard database" and turned on archive log mode over em.
    On the standby host we've installed only oracle without a database and without a listener.
    On a third machine we've installed grid control and registered the primary and standby hosts. Using EM with Data Grid I'm attempting to create a Physical Standby on standby host. Everything is working except for the last part as noted here:

    What mean's in this case:
    "ORA-01152 file string was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
    Cause: An incomplete recovery session was started, but an insufficient number of redo logs were applied to make the database consistent. This file is still in the future of the last redo log applied. The most likely cause of this message is forgetting to restore the file from backup before doing incomplete recovery.
    Action: Apply additional redo log files until the database is consistent or restore the datafiles from an older backup and repeat recovery."

    Thanks for your immediate reply,
    but there's a problem: We don't create the standby database manually. The creation is done by data guard over grid control. And the "automatic" creation stopps at this point.
    Unfortunatly we don't know, wich steps of a manuall standby database creation are done and wich steps are not done at this point.
    The oracle documentation (for release 11g) to create a manuall standby database is "B28294-02". But there's no step 5 "alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session". Do you mean step 4 of chapter 3.2.6?
    Is there no way, to create a standby database automatically over grid control? Or do we have to do something else before creating the physical standby database? Perhaps we have to create a full backup after switching to archive log mode?

  • Window oracle job scheduler and Oracle server scheduler relationship

    Hi Experts,
    We use oracle 10G R4 in window 2003 server.
    From window server panel,we can see OracleJobSchedulerORCAID server is disable. However, I check oracle Jobs from EM.
    I can saw schedule jobs are running in there.
    What relationship is between window scheduler server and Oracle Schdeler?
    As I know we can stop/start window Oracle database serve,r DBconsle EM server and Listener server in window server to control oracle
    .Why window oracle schedule does not affect Oracle schdule job?
    Thanks Experts to explaining?
    JIm

    10g R4 is not an existing Oracle version. 10.2.0.4 is.
    Oracle EM has three different schedulers:
    - dbms_job
    - dbms_scheduler
    - EM's own scheduler. Jobs submitted in the EM scheduler are spawned by the Management Agent.

  • Advantages / Disadvantages of 10gAS over Forms Server 6i

    Hi gurus,
    Is there any document/ links available related to advantages/disadvantages of Oracle 10gAs over Forms Server 6i. Either it can be functional wise/ performance wise/ feature wise/ configuration wise/ any thing else.
    Thanks in Advance
    Justin

    I don't believe so (we I certainly didn't write one!). If you go to otn.oracle.com/products/forms there are some new papers explaining the new features in each version subsequent to 6i. So in effect you can compare 6i and 10g by looking at the new features. However, support might be the biggest reason. 6i Forms is no longer supported.

    otherthan this three is there any possibility for a process or processes to run in the background i.e., without any human interaction like cronjobs

    you didn't mention if you are also using Oracle but since this is an Oracle forum :) you may prefer to use Oracle's scheduler maybe - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/schedover.htm

    10g is needed for dbms_scheduler, other wise dbms_job can be used.

  • What's the advantage of MainStage 2 over Logic 9?

    What's the advantage of MainStage 2 over Logic 9? Is MS 2 lower latency or quicker to switch 'presets'. I'm wondering what the absolute lowest latency is with a fast new mac running only Amp Designer & a few other Logic plugins, and the quickest switching time/dropout between 'presets' would be?
    If you have any idea, pray tell! :o)
    Thanks

    I don't think there's any particular computer processing advantage of one over the other; the main goal of Mainstage is to provide an interface for Logic's functionality that's useful for live performance (easier to see, easier to manipulate real-time control, easier to set up for an onstage performance with hardware instruments, easier to switch in a live context between instruments or patches, etc.).
    If you've used Ableton Live at all, or read about it, in some ways Mainstage is more comparable to Ableton; however, they're still very different. Ableton is much more heavily loop-based, and as someone knowledgeable has said, is almost a kind of instrument unto itself. Mainstage, in my opinion, is more of an interface reorganization of what Logic offers -- an excellent one at that, but with different goals from Ableton.

    First, this is a forum of volunteers.  There is no "urgent" here.
    "Urgent" means one of two things -
    1) people are dying, or
    2) you have a customer-facing, revenue-producing production system that is down.
    (And to get some perspective on the second case, keep the first in mind.)
    For the first, you call whatever civil emergency service seems appropriate.
    For the second, you open an SR with Oracle - which requires a paid-up support contract. For *them* to consider your problem "urgent", you will need to demonstrate that your problem falls under item #2. I seriously doubt your problem fits that criteria.
    You don't have a support contract?  Now you know the exact dollar figure that your company places on the data.
    That said, you need to understand a few things about your specific problem,
    First, port 1521 is only used by the listener to accept a connection request.  Once it gets that request (and finds that it is for a service (sid) that it knows about, it will fork a server process and tell the requesting client that it can communicate with that server process over some other port .. a randomly chosen port number in the "high" range.  It could be your vpn is blocking that other port, whereas your internal firewall is not.
    But this is just an educated guess since I cannot find "can not connect remote oracle database over VPN" in any error message manual. If you had mentioned the VPN along with an actual oracle error message we could be much more precise in our diagnoses and recommendations.
    ---- edit 22 Sep
    It occurred to me that I just assumed you were using the same client machine in both cases ... a laptop that you use both at work (local network) and home (vpn).  If that assumption is false, there are probably problems with your tns setup on the home (vpn) machine.
    But again, it would be much easier to help if you gave us an actual error message.

    What could be the reason of this script failure ?
    Could it be grants issue or something else ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    But that parameter in the dbms_job.submit procedure is of VARCHAR2 type,
    dbms_job.submit(
    JOB OUT BINARY_INTEGER,
    WHAT IN VARCHAR2,
    NEXT_DATE IN DATE DEFAULT SYSDATE,
    INTERVAL IN VARCHAR2 DEFAULT 'NULL',
    NO_PARSE IN BOOLEAN DEFAULT FALSE,
    INSTANCE IN BINARY_INTEGER DEFAULT 0,
    FORCE IN BOOLEAN DEFAULT FALSE);

  • Advantages of using BO over tools provided in BEx

    Hi,
    I am wanting to know if there is any documentation enlisting the advantages of using BO over the tools provided in BEx.
    Also, what is the advantage of using BO analysing data from cubes in BI 7.0 than accessing data from SAP R/3 directly.
    Thank you.

    Hi
    Advantages of BO (as well as other Query/Reporting) are that they provide robust end users interfaces
    in terms of designing queries, reports and also run on a standalone desktop client. Their user interface is
    easy to use and much easier environment to design manus, drop-down boxes/lists and buttons and also provide wizards to help users guide. These tools can also work against several heterogenous data sources.
    There are several factors one needs to keep in mind when selecting 3rd Party tools for SAP BW. A few are listed below:
    BO uses OLEDB for OLAP API via BEX query. This causes extra overhead because here you have BEX resources and then you add up BO resources to manage infrmation to/from BEX query over the OLEDB interface. Some vendors, like arcplan, use OLAP BAPI to access BW data. This API has somewhat lower overhead because it bypasses the OLEDB for OLAP layer.
    As you know that BEX is MSExcel based. It is not easy to build sophisticatecd user interfaces without doing extensive VBA or Macro programming.
    Thanks & Regards
