Advantages and Disadvantages of Switching off logging and debugging

Hello Experts,
Can you please explain me the Advantages and Disadvantages of Switching off logging and debugging (/SAPAPO/C4)..?
Will switching these off improve the performance...?

Omkar,
Switching off Logging and debugging will improve performance.  However, you will then not have the logs to assist you in troubleshooting problems.  When I am working in a support role on a stable production system, I look at these logs maybe once a week.  When I am developing new functionality, typically in a development client, I look at them many times each day.  You will have to determine if the performance trade-off is worthwhile to you in your business environment.
It is not usually necessary to have detailed logs, nor debugging, turned on in a stable production system.  I typically leave the 'standard' logging activated for "*" userid.
Don't forget to maintain the logs periodically.  Refer to this document for some general guidelines.

  • Firewall - switch off logging

    Hi
Does anyone know how to switch off firewall logging now in Snow Leopard?
I can't seem to find the setting in the security pane anymore.
My system profiler is showing up logging as "no". But it's also saying no stealth mode either, but that is set to yes on my firewall settings pane.
    Firewall Logging: No
    Stealth Mode: No
So I think the system profiler is displaying the wrong info... I would like to switch firewall logging off though!
    Cheers

If you wish to turn off firewall logging while still enabling stealth mode, here is the file and key that must be changed:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist
    <key>loggingenabled</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
You can change it manually after converting the plist to text using plutil, and then change it back to binary. However, it's much easier to use the Property List Editor application, installed with xcode.
See this thread [http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10239354&tstart=0] for more details.
Apparently the System Profiler misreports firewall status. There's an older dormant plist in /usr/libexec/ApplicationFirewall but that proved to not be the culprit. The console app will quickly confirm that the above change has taken effect, in spite of what system profiler says.

  • Implications of Switching off Logging

    Hi All,
As a performance enhancement measure, we are thinking of switching of logging for 2000+ business users who use our OBIEE 11g application. We will be doing it by setting the logging level column to zero in the database. We wanted to understand if there is some negative implication of doing this.
We also wanted to understand the complete impact of setting the logging level to zero. Will this mean that nothing will get recorded in nqserver and nqquery logs? Will that also mean that the SAW logs will also not be populated?
Any pointers will be extremely helpful.
    Thanks in Anticipation,
    Karan

    Hi,
The login level is a parameter which control the number of information that you will retrieve in the log file from nothing (level 0 - no_log_found) to a lot of information (level 5).
Nothing should happen but still you can set to atleast 2 to record the users activity/to capture the queries if they are running very slow.
Many applications set logging level as 2.

I changed my Apple ID, now I can't login to iCloud because it still has my old Apple ID and the password no longer works to log me in. How can I get back into iCloud so that I can switch off Find my iPhone so I can make these changes? Thank you. (iPhone 4s)

Well, you're gonna have to recover the password for that Apple ID:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5787

  • If I change my Apple password as a security precaution because my phone has been lost and switched off, will Find My iPhone still function? That is, will it be able to connect to iCloud, as the password on the phone is still the old one.

My phone is lost – not stolen, and may still be returned. Not long after I lost it, it was switched off, or died (it was at about 6%), so I can't find it using Find My iPhone. I realized I should change all my important passwords, as the passcode can be compromised by various methods. One password I changed was for my Apple account.
Now I'm realizing that I shouldn't have done that. What if the phone comes back online – but my AppleID password has changed; will the phone still be able to connect to Apple with the old credentials so my message is sent?
When I realized this I tried to go back to my old password – but Apple won't let me use one I used in the last year. Any way around this?

when you change your Apple iD it's pretty much changing the visual email, i guess that doesn't really answer your question, yes you keep your purchases, it just changes the log-in email and email where newsletters , etc. go to.

  • What are advantage and disadvantage for Physical Standy and Logical Standby

    HI,
What are advantage and disadvantage for Physical Standy and Logical Standby configuration?
    Thanks
    Ken

    Logical standby database
The key advantage for logical standby databases is that they're opened read/write, even while they're in
applied mode. That is, they can be used to generate reports and the like. It is indeed a fully functional
database. Also, additional indexes, materialized views and so on can be created.
However (this being a disadvantage) not all datatypes are supported.
Oracle (or more exactly the log apply services) uses the primary database's redo log, transforms them into
SQL statements and replays them on the logical standby database.
    Physical standby database
A physical standby database is a byte for byte exact copy of the primary database. This also means that
rowids stay the same in a physical standby database environment.
Oracle (or more exactly the log apply services) uses the primary database's redo log to recover the
    physical database.
A physical standby database might be opened read only; however, the received logs are in this case not
applied. When the logs are applied, the database is not accessible (it is then in a managed recovery state).

  • Word documents have disappeared from my desk top (macbook air) and cannot be found anywhere, happened after switching off and re-bootingk

Saved word documents have dissappeared from the desk top after saving. Problem seems to occur when laptop is switched off and then re-started. they can't be found anywhere e.g tried spotlight, recent documents etc. Help. Joe

First, you might as well address the two apparently-minor issues you found:
Some info on the Epson Scanner Monitor (via searching these forums):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8272208&#8272208
Not sure about the MS Word message, but it looks like you might need an upgrade. I'd check with Microsoft, or perhaps VersionTracker.com.
Ok, back to the original problem. Does the message have any other text (intelligible or not)?
Does it give you any options, especially "report"? If so, take it, then look via Console for a crash log.
What IS in the system log for the sleep/wake time? There should be a System Sleep, followed by a System Wake, and perhaps another line or two. Anything in that area might be helpful.

  • Advantages and disadvantages of SOAP over Http

    Hi!
Can any one explain about advantages and disadvantages of SOAP over HTTP.
    Thanks
    Sreenath

    Hi,
Yes you can use RMI to communicate to your soa suite server allthough i could not get it to work from weblogic 10.3, there is a conflict with certain other libraries. From any other 10.1.3 oracle application server there should not be any problem. The biggest advantage of RMI over SOAP is performance. The soap client also generates lots of logging which can not be disabled, ... i already logged a bug on that. The advantage of SOAP over RMI is its underlying HTTP protocol which is, in some cases, the only protocol allowed by network engineers to pass through firewalls.
    Kind Regards,

  • Advantage and Disadvantags of ActionScript 3

    Hi professionals of ActionScript 3!
I just started flash animation and learning ActionScript. But
I found one thing that there existing ActionScript 1, 2, 3 versions
and ActionScript 2 components is using only ActionScript 2 code.
Please tell me advantages and disadvantages of both ActionScript.
Please advise which is powerful and has more info and sources. What
kind of links between then existing.
    Thanks in advance!
    Said Babanli

    Said,
    > Please tell me advantages and disadvantages of both

ActionScript 1.0 and 2.0 both run on the same virtual
    machine (AVM1)
inside Flash Player. As of Flash Player 9, the player runtime
    features two
virtual machines (AVM1 and AVM2), the second of which runs
    ActionScript 3.0.
Right off the bat, this tells you that Flash Player 9 or
    higher is required
if you want to program with ActionScript 3.0. In one sense,
    that's a
potential "disadvantage" of AS3: if your users have Flash
    Player 8 or lower
installed, you simply can't use that version of the language.
    Instead,
you'll have to use AS2 (as far back as Flash Player 6) or AS1
    (as far back
as Flash Player 5), or slash-notation proto-ActionScript if
    you need to go
even further back than that. Ultimately, then, the version of
    ActionScript
you use depends on the version of Flash Player you expect
    your users to have
    installed.
AS2 is the first version of ActionScript to officially
    support custom
classes (external text files structured in a particular way,
    using folders
for classpaths and the "class" keyword). For more information
    on
classpaths -- written for AS2, but basically applies to AS3
    -- see this URL:
    http://www.quip.net/blog/2006/flash/understanding-classpaths
For many people (myself included), custom classes provide a
    powerful way
to organize code into reusable objects -- just like the given
    objects in
ActionScript's native API. Be aware, however, that custom
    classes are *not
a required workflow* in AS2 or AS3. If you prefer, you may
    place your AS2
or AS3 code into timeline keyframes, just like with AS1.
    Contrarily, even
though true classes are not officially supported by AS1, you
    can mimic many
of the benefits of classes by following the instructions here
    (an incomplete
    resource, but very useful):
    http://www.debreuil.com/docs/
It would take pages and pages of notes to give you a
    thorough list of
the benefits (and disadvantages!) of every version of
    ActionScript. Even
then, it would be difficult to demonstrate that such a list
    was complete, so
to keep things simple: as a general rule, each new version of
    ActionScript
is presumed to be better than its predecessor. AS1 was more
    powerful than
Flash 4-era ActionScript because it provided a considerably
    larger API. AS1
also made it easier to target objects with dot notation than
    with slash
notation and cumbersome getProperty() and setProperty()
    functions. AS2 was
more powerful than AS1 because it provided native support for
    classes. It
introduced variable typing, which helped with code completion
    and
compile-time error checking. (AS2 also coincided with an even
    larger API,
but that's a parallel benefit due to increased functionality
    in subsequent
versions of Flash Player.) AS3 is more powerful than AS2
    because the syntax
of custom classes has become more strict. I personally find
    that stricter
syntax helps a programmer avoid "lazy" or "sloppy" practices,
    encouraging
the programmer to code with purpose.
For more thoughts along these lines, here's a free excerpt
    from a book I
recently co-authored for O'Reilly (bear in mind, these are
    largely
subjective opinions, but they work for me):
    http://www.communitymx.com/abstract.cfm?cid=16D76
I'll probably start repeating myself soon, but to sum up:
    AS2 has
advantages over previous versions because it provides
    numerous options and
improvement in ease of use. AS3 improves even further by
    "cleaning up" the
language by making it more strict and by providing a stronger
    internal
    consistency.
Here are a few quick examples.
In AS2, to create an instance of the Sound class (that is,
    an object you
can use for programming audio), you simply use the "new"
    keyword:
    // AS2
    var mySound:Sound = new Sound();
Most classes can be instantiated in this way, but in AS2,
    there are
notable exceptions, including movie clips and text fields.
    // AS2 -- this does NOT work!
    var myMC:MovieClip = new MovieClip();
    var myTF:TextField = new TextField();
This can be confusing to a newcomer, because it seems so
    arbitrary.
(Someone new might well think, "Why can't instances be made
    the same way
across the board?") In AS3, instantiation is more consistent:
    // AS3
    var mySound:Sound = new Sound();
    var myMC:MovieClip = new MovieClip();
    var myTF:TextField = new TextField();
This is also true for event handling. In AS2, there are four
    or five
ways to do it: the on() and onClipEvent() functions, their
    dot notation
    equivalents, addListener(), and addEventListener(). They're
    all valid in
AS2, but not all interchangeable. Some work for components,
    some for other
sorts of objects. It takes effort to memorize which objects
    work with which
approach. In AS3, outside of a very small number of
    exceptions, most event
handling is done with a single, consistent approach:
    addEventListener().
For a newcomer, this is easier to learn because once the
    technique is
understood, it works in nearly every scenario.
As far as performance is concerned, AS3 trumps AS2
    significantly. AS3
performs better and faster than all previous versions of
    ActionScript -- but
you'll only notice this with complex applications, especially
    those
involving a high volume of number crunching.

You also asked which version of the language has more "info
    and
resources." By that, I assume you mean online resources, such
    as blogs,
tutorials, and so on. That question is hard to answer, but my
    *guess* is
that there are still more resources online about AS2 than AS3
    ... but AS3
    will probably catch up soon.

i lost my phone and it is switched off now...how can i find my phone with find my iphone app active thru icloud?? pls help me.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can only locate your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
Unfortunately, you cannot activate iCloud or 'Find My Phone' remotely.

  • Portege M400 randomly switching off and restarting

    Hi,
I wondered if any one has any suggestions on what's wrong with my laptop? Two days ago it started randomly switching off and restarting. I've checked the following:
    - Run Panda Security online check for viruses etc - all ok.
    - Checked the system logs but all it records is a 'windows stopped unexpectedly' error.
    - Suspecting an overheating problem I took it to pieces, cleaned all the dust from the fan and heat exchanger. Also cleaned all the old thermal compound off the CPU and replaced with new. It is now running much cooler but still randomly shutting down.
    - Run a Suse Linux Live DVD to check it's definitely not an OS problem and it still shuts down.
I'm guessing something is shorting out on the motherboard as it will run ok if it's on a flat surface and not moved and I don't press down too hard whilst typing etc. Though it's a bit hit and miss. Has anyone had this problem before and is there any thing else I could try? Also any ideas on how much a new motherboard is? I'm expecting probably expensive :( Unless there's any kind of fix I can do myself? I'm pretty technically minded and don't have a problem with taking it to bits just don't know much about electronics, engines are more my thing :D
    TIA, Firedrake
Ps Laptop model number is PPM40E running Vista Business.

Had a chat with a mate of mine and took it to bits again and have noticed that the heatsink that connects the CPU to the heat exchanger and fan isn't very well clamped even though the three screws are tight. It can be wiggled from side to side is this normal? Every CPU heatsink I've seen on desktops is very firmly clamped down and can't move at all. I'd have expect this to be the same on a laptop.
I've adjusted the clamp a bit and it's better then it was but still moves slightly. Now when it switches off the fan goes full blast and the DC IN LED is flashing orange but it doesn't reboot. According to the manual this is an overheating power down so I'm back to thinking it's an overheating CPU problem rather then the motherboard.
Has anyone else had this problem and know how to fix it? In the mean time I've ordered another heatsink to see if that solves it.
    Cheers, Firedrake

  • Is there a way to switch off by default the video on FaceTime? I only ever use this app for audio/calls and hate the video being on. I especially hate that if I leave the app open to receive calls it means the camera and green light are on.

My issue is that I can't find a way to have the camera switched off when the app is open and so this means if I want the app open all day to receive calls then the camera is going to be on the whole time. Even if it didn't potentially drain the battery, or add to the CPU usage or whatever else may cause any problems whatsoever (wheel of death!), I just don't want the camera on as I don't see myself ever wanting to use the video call feature but I would use the audio/call multiple times throughout the day to make and receive calls. The camera being on when the app is open is enough to prevent me from using the app. Also ever since seeing that episode of criminal minds where if you saw the green light on above the screen then it meant the killer was watching you!
Basically I just can't believe there isn't a way to disable the camera whilst having the app running. I know when initiating an audio call the camera goes away, but I would like the camera away the whole time. To me it just would make sense that if you click the video option then the camera is on, and if you click the audio option then the camera goes off. It just seems waaaaay to basic a thought for apple to have missed... Let's face it, we're not all as pretty as the people in the apple adverts and don't want to see our ugly mugs staring back as us when we work all day at our macs!

I have exactly the same concern. It seems it would be a simple fix for Apple to allow users to turn off the camera (and even the mic) while keeping FaceTime open -- especially now that it turns out FaceTime must remain open in order to send and receive iPhone calls on a Mac.
I like to think this new functionality of FaceTime will be baked into a future release of Yosemite, as the current setup has that not-quite-finished feel of a work in progress. In the meantime, there's nothing like a little piece of Post-It stuck over the camera to keep the NSA from watching your face as you type a post to the Apple Support Communities.
