Advice for backing up

I need some advice on backing up
I don't want to use time machine because i dont need regular back-ups, i just need a program that will backup everything on my macintosh HD to my external hard drive once every 2 weeks or so

So you're perfectly happy losing as much as two weeks of work when (not if) your HD fails, or some other major failure happens?
As Malcom says, you can still use Time Machine. Another way is to turn it off in TM > Preferences, then when you want to do a backup, use the +Back Up Now+ option from the TM icon in your Menubar, or control-clicking (right-clicking) the TM icon in your Dock.

In need of advice for backing up HD Video

So we returned from a vacation,
where I shot all the video in HD 1080p.
We got back, and I used Final Cut Express to convert the AVCHD files from .mkv to .mov files.
All together, the total files come to a whopping 78.93 GB. Wow.
I need to back these up to DVD's or something
(My wife says she doesnt want them on an external hard drive, her last one died)
is there a way I could compress these?
or should I use quicktime/visualhub to bring down the quality a little?
any advice would be greatly appreciated

Solutions:
1) ignore the wife and backup to a good hard drive such as a LaCie quadra. usb or firewire.
2) Buy Time Capsule and backup to it.
3) what would i do? Use MPEGStreamClip to make mp4 files , to control the file size. The picture will still look very good but it does not do 5.1 channel sound. Handbrake does but since the file is HD probably will crash while encoding so will VisualHub. Another consideration, MPEGStreamClip on a 2 gig HD movie will take 15 hrs on a Mac pro let alone an iMac.
Currently not too many programs will do HD encoding.
4) backup to optical disc, I'd never do that ; too many compatibilty issues with different drives perceived for future usage.
5) back to the wife, user should alway have three backup stategies; ie main drive then backup # 1 then backup #2. I've backup to external and internal hard drives for over a decade without problems.

Advice for backing up media - Blu Ray? Anyone try it?

I am currently using external drives to back up lots of video and was wondering if anyone has tried using a Blu Ray burner to do this? Not sure what the data limitations of the disk are? Are there external ones? Would you recommend it or wait a bit longer?

Absolutely, original tapes, along with a project in which they've been properly logged and captured, are the best form of backup.
But not everyone works with DV sources, and not all of our source material is batch-re-capturable.
For instance, I work with an agency that reps touring bands, and a lot of the source material I get is on DVD video. I have to rip and extract the video (to which the clients hold the rights) and import it. At this point, whiile I could theoretically repeat this procedure and get a file almost identical, it still isn't frame accurate and would require some reworking to rebuild any project if teh media were lost.
I agree Blu-ray isn't cost-effective yet per GB, and DVD-5 requires a lot of time and patience to archive. But it's still a good, safe way to back up material like this, IMHO. To steal Shane's example, drop a DVD and a hard drive from a foot off the ground and see which still works. I do archive to hard drives to keep things accessible, but I know too well how vulnerable that storage medium is to failure.

Seeking advice for backing up Xserve G5 w/ RAID PCI card

Hello all!
I'm a newbie to Macs and server admin, and I have inherited the job of setting up a server at work for file storage. I'll do my best to give a concise description of our set-up - I'm looking for some advice on the last few odds and ends... mainly how we can backup the system.
We bought an Xserve G5 with an option RAID PCI card. We have 3 500GB drives in the Xserve, configured to RAID 5 (giving us effectively 1TB of storage space). We will be using the server for data storage. About 20 computers will access the server over a network; we are using an assortment of Macs and PCS.
I am seeking advice on backup systems for the server. In the event that the RAID5 fails, we don't want to lose our data. We just need a snapshot of the server; we don't need to archive data or to take the HD offsite. Our old server just used Retrospect to run incremental backups every night (with a complete clean backup once a month). Our current thought is to attach large external hard drive to our admin computer (not the server directly) and run nightly backups as before.
The major points I have are:
-Any thoughts on reliable 1 TB external drives?
-Any recommendations on software that can backup from a RAID over a network? I found info for Retrospect Server 6.0 - it seems to do what we want, but is rather pricey.

We all started out as newbies at one time or another-no worries. That is why we are here.
I personally use the Lacie branded drives. They are sturdy and reliable. My only thoughts here are to have at least three external drives-one for today's backup, one for a backup stored securely nearby, and one to be securely stored off-site. Rotate the drives daily so that your worst-case scenario will be a catastrophe that requires you to use a three-day old backup, depending upon how old your off-site backup is. Not ideal but better than the alternative. External drives are cheap enough these days to allow you to do this at a reasonable cost. Plus it is easy enough to throw one in a briefcase and tote it home for safety (just don't lose it!)
I would stay away from Retrospect. If you search these forums you will find several instances of folks having some serious issues with the program. I use a program called Carbon Copy Cloner that does the job nicely for my basement server. There are ways to do the backups via the command line interface as well but I am not so familiar with those commands. You may have to dig a little deeper to find something that works for you.
One of the other advantages of the FW external drive is that you can share it with other users, so perhaps you can set things up to have your network backups to go to that drive. Tis a thought.

Am trying to transfer iTunes library to an external disk for back-up purposes. have followed normal protocol i.e. locating iTunes file in Music folder and dragging across to external disk icon. However, nothing seems to happen. Any advice please?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The external drive must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", exFAT or FAT32, because OS X can't write in NTFS partitions by default.
As you just want the library on the external drive to make a backup of your library, you can format it in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" by using Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html (Note that you won't be able to use the external drive with PCs unless you install a special application in them).

Hi all,
I have been "a Mac" now for over a year and just keep finding cool new things that make me happy I switched. The latest thing is Back to My Mac offered with my Mobile Me account. With a rather convoluted mix of PC/Mac/iOS devices to manage - best $99 I ever spent btw...
I also have a 1TB Time Capsule that I have been using with Time Machine to back up all four of my Mac computers at home. Needless to say, the 1TB is really struggling to handle the amount of data being backed up and certainly leaves no room for anything else.
What I wanted to do was to attach a larger external hard drive via a powered hub to the USB port on the Time Capsule and use it for Time Machine backups while using the internal 1TB drive with Back to My Mac so that I can have remote access to all my data from anywhere without having to leave my computer running at home all the time in order for my laptop to "see" it when I'm away. And, yes, the amount of that data far exceeds what any level of Mobile Me subscription can offer! I should also mention that the hard drive is the only USB device connected through the hub to the Time Capsule at the moment. There are no other devices that might be "getting in the way".
I'm thinking maybe all this is asking too much without the addition of a dedicated file server (Mac Mini, perhaps - not a purchase my budget wants to make).
I understand that the Time Capsule doesn't support partitions, so I bought a Western Digital 2TB Elements drive, connected it to my Macbook Pro and used Disk Utility to reformat the drive from the incompatible NTFS it shipped in to a single, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition. I then made two folders on the drive, one for Time Machine backups and one for Back to My Mac remote storage/access. Great.
However, when I connected the 2TB drive to my Time Capsule I could not see it at all. Time Capsule was reporting problems in the way of a disk error. From within my Airport Utility, I could see the trouble was the external drive. The utility suggested connecting the drive to a Mac and using it's Disk Utility to troubleshoot.
I followed through, checking the disk, etc. and ended up reformatted the drive on my Macbook Pro yet again with the same specifications as before but without the folders and reconnected it to the Time Capsule. Same deal. But now, I can't even remotely connect to the Time Capsule at all. I can see the Time Capsule in the shared area of my Macbook's Finder but can not connect. The connection tries and fails even before it gets to asking me for username and password credentials.
Long story short, first of all, I suppose I would like to know if I'm asking for the impossible?
Second, if what I want to do *is* possible, what steps do I need to take to make it so?

Well, I have now reformatted/partitioned my poor WD Elements 2TB drive about a dozen times as well as restarted my 1TB Time Capsule so many times it's no wonder it's as confused as I am! <G>
Last night, at your suggestion, William, and in respect for your continued support, I tried creating two 1TB Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partitions on the WD external USB drive, both with GUID partition tables. Both volumes mounted to my laptop's desktop flawlessly and without issue.
Once the external drive was connected to the Time Capsule, however, it was a crap shoot as to whether or not the drive was recognized at all, reporting a problem with the disk, or, even at one point, mounting one of the two volumes but not both. <sigh>
I read somewhere on the Internet that you need to restart the Time Capsule for volumes on an external USB drive to be recognized.
So I tried that. I connected the freshly partitioned/formatted disk to the Time Capsule and restarted it. This succeed in removing the issue of reporting a nameless drive with a capacity of 0MB. It then reported the drive with its correct name but would not recognize whatever volumes in whatever partitions that particular crack at it contained with the exception of the once, as I mentioned above, when only one of two volumes mounted correctly and was listed with the right name and capacity on the Time Capusule's Setup's Disk tab.
At this point I have given up on my goal to use the external drive with Time Machine to back up my Macs or to hope I will ever be able to see its contents remotely via Back to My Mac. All I would like to do now is simply find a reason why I can't get it successfully connected and playing nice with my Time Capsule in the first place!
Any further suggestions or advice as to what steps I might take next would be greatly appreciated.

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.

Multiple libraries, Pbook/Pmac, advice for management & updating please.

I travel frequently, and am looking for suggestions to keep all my iPhoto libraries up to date. I currently have a g5, Powerbook, and Mini.
I just upgraded to iPhoto 6 and I have several thousand photos on my Dual g5. I just came back with 1000 more from my diving trip. The problem is, they are on my Powerbook, and taking up alot of space on the relatively small hard drive. I managed to work through the rough upgrade from 5 to 6, and now I need some more help...
1) What is your advice for managing multiple libraries of photos.
2) What is the best way to transfer the iphoto pics (and movies) to my desktop, which of course has the larger storage capacity, after travelling...

There are several different approaches to what you want to do. Let me just throw out a couple that I'm familiar with.
To get the new photos from your PB to your G5 and maintain any keywords, and other organization effort you put into them, you'll need the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. It will allow you to merge libraries or copy between libraries and maintain the metadata, etc. That's the only way currently available to move photos from one library to another and keep the roll, keywords, comments, etc. with those photos. You can connect the two Macs with one in the Target Mode, probably your PB, and then run iPLM to move the photos to the G5 library.
Now there is a way to have a library on your PB that reflects the one on your G5 but is only a fraction of the size. That's to have an alias based library on your PB that uses the Originals folder as its source of source files. (My 25,600 files, 27G, are represented by an iPhoto Library folder of only 1.75G). When the PB is not connected with the G5, say with a LAN, it will have limited capabilities which are in part: you'll only be able to view the thumbnail files, be able to add comments, create, delete or move albums around, add keywords (but with some hassle-but it can be done). You can't do anything that requires moving thumbnails around, work with books, slideshows or calendars. Once the two computers are networked together again the library will act as normal.
Now while on the road you can have a "normal" library to import new full sized files, keyword them, add comments, etc. and then transfer to the G5 library. Once in the G5 library they will be represented in a roll(s) and corresponding folder in the Originals folder. You then fire up the "alias" library, and import those new folders in the G5 Originals folder.
It may be a lot of work but it may be one way of doing it.
I've not done any of the "sharing" with iPhoto so don't know if that's another possible candidate for transferring.
P.S. FWIW I've created this workflow for converting from a conventional library to an alias based one.

Advice for real performance of LV8.5 operate in the XP and Vista

We may install the LV8.5 in these computers but OS are not decided yet. Also, we have the current PC is only XP licensed

The biggest issue I have seen with 8.5 Vista vs. XP is that if you leave Vista in the standard theme, the fonts have changed. I designed several front panels to have them be out of whack with XP. So if you are going to be using code across platforms, you need to keep in mind they will look different unless you use the XP theme in Vista, or customize your fonts to make sure they remain the same between the systems. The dialog font is a different size (13 on Vista vs. 11 on XP), and a different font (can't remember the difference). That was the big one I noticed.
8.5 over 7.1 is mostly going to be the learning curve to learn the new features. Overall, I have appreciated the changes, but there are some things (mostly development related) that I have seen run a little slower in 8.5 than in 7.1, but have not noticed any runtime issues as of yet. One big change between the versions is application building, which is more complex in 8+. I do appreciate the new features, though, but NIs project still hasn't rubbed me the right way yet.
NI doesn't support LV 7.1 with Vista. I have used it and haven't seen any problems, but that doesn't mean one won't pop up. If you're going to stay with 7.1, you better stay with XP. 8.5 is the first version NIs supports as Vista compatible. You will also have to use a relatively new set of device drivers, so if you have old hardware you are trying to use in your new system, make sure it is cimpatible with the latest drivers.
I have actually had more issues with other hardware drivers and software packages than I have with LabVIEW. TestStand is not yet supported in Vista, and i found out the hard way, one of the ways it is incompatible and had to move back to XP for devlopment.

APC Power Backup Advice for Small Office

I wasn't sure where to post this but I was hoping someone would not my pointing me to the right forum or offering some advice.
I am trying to put the finishing touches on a conversion to mac and have been looking at buying a Power Backup in part for the power part (no crashes and safe shutdown) but also for surge protection.
I have a MacPro (and a monitor), a Time Machine (for the MBP), 2 - 1TB WD externals, a 500 GB Iomega External (for the MBP), a 3DConnection spaceball device and 2 printers on the "desktop". And then I have a 1 TB Seagate External that I keep plugged in on another table for backing up the MacBookPro now and then.
A. Is there anything else (other than temporary power and surge protection) I should be looking for when purchasing such a piece of hardware?
B. Should I be getting everything on the "desktop" plugged in to a backup device such as this and if so how do I calculate which device to buy?
C. Is it a crime to leave the 1 TB Seagate that is not conveniently located off this backup/surge protection system? I suppose it would be wise to unplug it and only plug it in when I am running a backup?
TIA for any advice. It's been a long haul and I'd love to make sure I am finishing this with some pro level advice/approval.

A couple of things to consider in that scenario: first, while it's not necessarily true of all external drives, some, such as LaCie, are noted for the early failure of their power bricks. Since I've been using a LaCie power brick for over ten years without a problem, I suspect that's because it's not connected to a power source except when it's in actually in use. Even when an external drive is not actually spinning, the power source is still live and perpetual cooking is probably not good for its health. I follow that rule with all devices that use power bricks, including Seagate and WD external backup drives and no brick has ever quit.
Second, the Seagate external drives I've used tend to run very hot because of poor or nonexistent ventilation. Indeed, the SMART record of one of them showed a heat failure with a 155 degree F. reading "in the past." Especially if leaving the drive plugged in means the drive is actually on, keeping it unplugged except when it's in use is a good idea.

I'm not certain the post I sent was posted correctly, as I added it as a reply to a 3-year old thread. Since this is a recently-active thread, though not specific to the issue at hand, I thought I'd post again:
Three years ago you helped me set up a roaming wireless network in my home. It's been rock-steady and I'm forever grateful to you for the time and guidance you gave me. I'd now like to swap out my AirPort Extreme base station for a time capsule. As I understand it, I should be able to unplug the base station and replace it with the TC without problem, so long as I use all the same settings on my TC... network name, security protocol, password, etc. Given the complexity of my network, I thought I should check with you first for any advice you might have. I don't want to set up a new network or make any changes to the existing one-- with the exception of using the TC in place of the AE. I'm already using Time Machine for backups. As a refresher, my current setup has the AE as base station and 3 expresses hard-wired with Ethernet connections elsewhere in my home. I have a 4th express set up wirelessly to use with my stereo system at the front of the house. All AXs are 'n's and are set up, as per your instructions, in Bridge mode to extend the existing network. I'm running the most updated version of Mavericks on my MBPro. Finding the "best" application for backing up

Any advice for a computer illiterate who needs to find the best app to use for backing up to a portable external drive.
I have seen many mentioned. I need a user-friendly, cheap, reliable one (for tiger). I am computer dumb, so please understand if I have to look up computer terms.

I use SuperDuper on our home systems, and my kids use it on their systems, too. I would recommend it as a top notch backup program. As it's preparing to backup or restore, It explains what the program is going to do in non-technical terms. While you can use it for free, paying the fee unlocks features that make it an even better program. For example, the free version backs up the entire disk. The 'unlocked' version gives you options, for example, to back up only those files that have changed since the last backup, which makes for a much quicker backup.

Best for Backing Up

Ok, I am guilty of usually not backing up my computer and I feel I have been lucky so far. I was going to wait for Time Machine but maybe I should just start taking care of things now instead of waiting. I need some advice on the best way to make a backup system to fit my needs.
I have a C2D MBP with a 160gb hard drive and I don't keep tons of information on my machine. 10-12gb of music maybe 10gb photos. Office and CS2 apps along with the iLife suite. I have a .mac account but I would rather back up to a hard drive if needed. I am a graphic designer and most of my design files are usually backed up to CD/DVD but I do keep current projects on the HD. I currently don't have an external drive so I would need to purchase one. Preferably USB 2 and FW800 to suite any needs I would have.
The bottom line is I want to make sure my system and applications are always backed up every week or so to be prepared in case my hard drive goes bad and I can just plug it and have everything back if the hard drive gets damaged or replaced due to damage. I don't know if I need a bootable disk image or not and would like advice for a simple and effective solution. I'm not super technical when it comes to backup utilites so be gentle. I suggest that you need to have a bootable backup so that when your system hard drive fails, you have some way of restarting your computer after it's been replaced. I find SuperDuper! to be the easiest way to back up the Mac HD and be bootable when you're done.
Specifically, to make the best use of your external HD space, check the Macintosh HD to see how much space you presently use. Say it's 80 Gigabytes. Using Disk Utilities, partition your new 300 GB external HD with two partitions of 85 GB and 200 GB. Install SuperDuper! and backup your Mac HD to the first partition and make it bootable. Check to make sure this works by going into System Preferences and changing you boot disk to the first partition of your external HD.
If that all works, reboot from your Mac HD again and back up the Mac HD to the second HD partition as an image (it will be one large file).
Why go to all this trouble, you ask? You first backup that you confirmed you can boot from is a known good back up that you will never back up to again! That protects you from having a potentially corrupted backup if the Mac HD is corrupted or damaged and you do a backup before you realize it. You may want to update this first partition backup sometime in the future if you update the OS and find it has new functionally that you always want access to. But you may find that you will have to resize the partition to make room for a larger back up which would destroy all the data on the drive.
The second hard drive back up which is an image file on your second partition allows you to make further use of your external HD's second partition. In the first back up, you made a back up that has all of the thousands of separate individual files that make your original HD. If you look at it using the Finder, you will see it looks just like your Mac HD.
On the second partition, the back up image allows you to have MULTIPLE back up images all encapsulated so they can exist side by side on a single drive. You can't do that on the first partition unless you created a folder to drop it into. Also, the rest of that partition is available to store other folders and files that you don't want to clutter your main HD up with. Just remember that those files are not backed up unless you also store them else ware.
This isn't a perfect solution to your back up problem as all your files (eggs) are in one basket. You could add more external HDs but this is a good first step to protecting your data.
I hope this helps getting you started and post further questions if you're not sure what this all means.

External Hard Drive Options for Back Up - USB 2.0 or FireWire

Needing some advice on this one. Looking to purchase an external hard drive for back up through Time Machine - also running Win XP via Parallels. Should I go USB 2.0 or FireWire or have both options? Is there any difference in speed? I will be also using the external hard drive as needed for other manual back ups and data transfers eg movie projects. (and yes the Macbook has Firewire).
Would appreciate some comment / recommendations.

Firewire is faster overall for data transfers especially large or lengthy ones. With this in mind, I would use an external enclosure that has both Firewire and USB.
I'm not sure if this was part of your question or not but I would not include your virtual machine (xp) in your Time Machine backup. The reason is it will fill up your backup drive quickly because your TM backup copies hourly every file that has changes made to it. Your VM file is both large (the size of the virtual drive) and has changes even if you just have it open and not really using it. You should include your VM file in your manual backup instead.

Any advice for teacher struggling with scratch disk problems?

Just wondering if anyone out there has advice for me. I am a Media Teacher with very little technical expertise. We use Premiere Elements 4.0 in my school. This is accessible to students on the school network but is located on a separate drive. I am experienceing a lot of problems at the moment which I suspect may be to do with having multiple users. The students work in groups. Some of them do not seem to be able to access their current coursework - a scratch disk error message comes up and they are asked if they want to locate the scratch disks into their own area of the school network. As personal space is very limited, they always say no, and then cannot access the projects. Other students do not have this problem. The scratch disks are located by default to the same drive as the main work.
A further problem is that in one project, the clips in the second half of the project seem to be 'offline'. I have seen this before and have been able to fix it by locating the clip in the project menu and using 'locate media' to reconnect it. However, this time round, the clip can be seen and runs perfectly in the project menu. It also looks as normal on the timeline. It is only in the viewing window that it comes up as offline. The locate media option isn't available. If I save as an avi, the offline message appears, so the project burns as it appears in the viewing window. If I drag the clips down from the project area and reconstruct, everything plays normally until I close the project down and open it again, when the clips are back offline. I can tell something strange is going on because the project is loading very quickly - it was taking a couple of minutes previously.

Is Premiere Elements installed on your network or on the C drives of each computer? The program must be installed on the C drive in order to work properly. You can't run the program from a network installation, and that could explain why you're having the problems you're having.
If you've got Premiere Elements installed on your C drive, you should be able to access your video files if they're stored on the network. But this depends on how your network is set up. It may not be possible for all of your students to access material out on your network drive and remain connected to it the same way every time you open your project.
In other words, you're using the program in ways it's not designed to be used. This is why you may need to contact Tech Suport and see if they can recommend a solution, short of each student having their own complete installation on each computer.
