AE CC and Maya

Can someone update me on the Maya -> AE CC workflow? I know the AE CC has a Cinema 4d function, but if I don't wish to learn Cinema and keep using Maya… How can I bring my work into AE CC?
I have read about a couple of softwares you have to buy to make Maya work in AE? That sounds crazy as I have already bought Maya and AE cc. Can I bring Maya into C4D and then use the new function in AE cc?

There is no specific support for Maya in AE. All there ever was was the Maya camera importer and of course support for the rendered output. I'm sure there is some scripts or plug-ins out there that can extract more scene data as Nulls and such, but otherwise there's really not much. Even if you were to export a Maya FBX and import it into Cinema 4D you'd still need to tweak and polish it to produce an acceptable result. such is the nature of the whole affair...

  • Qmaster and Maya... "How to's"

    I am attempting to set up Qmaster to network render my modeler's Maya projects. We've been using mentalray's network renderer, but we need to submit AE and FCP files to the same Xservers as well, so Qmaster seems like the easiest way to manage multiple network renders from a single location. We have 3 Xservers that we render to and our shared resources are on a PC (smb) server (that's where our department's "GraphicArts" production server is). I'm new at this network admin thing (really I'm just a designer, our IT guys don't want to have anything to do with the "new" Xservers).
    It seems like I've gotten most of the Qmaster setup working. I have the servers with Qmaster installed and they are listening... My cluster seems fine with my G5 as the controller; it reads all my Xservers and the Controller itself... The Maya files render fine to the Xservers from Maya with the mentalray satellites BUT NOT FROM QMASTER! Qmaster will send the render out but it only renders on my G5 controller, not on any of the Xservers, none the less, only to .iff! The submitted Renders all show up in the Batch Monitor but jump to 100% complete as soon as the render starts. When I use the Maya bin file standards to change the file type to .psd, the render fails. Bogus!
    So...
    Question 1) Is there a problem with, say, sharing source files from a smb server when the Qmaster Cluster itself is connected via afp? (I don't think so since my controller will render fine and it's connected to both servers [afp and smb] in the same manner as my Xservers)
    Question 2) Do I need Maya (the app itself) installed on all my Nodes with the same file path as my executable Qmaster setting ON EACH NODE? (i.e. We have 8 mentalray licenses but only 3 for Maya, thus I have the mentalray on the servers; I use the Maya.app/bin/Render as the Executable source in Qmaster to send the batch out, but that executable is not on the server Nodes, only the mentalray satellites are)
    Question 3) Does my Controller's Shared Cluster Storage need to be the same file path as the Nodes'? I have a custom Shared Cluster Storage path on my G5 Controller so I can easily see my temp files (no command line necessary, it's in my Documents folder). Do I need that path to be exactly the same on all machines rendering? (It wouldn't seem that way since each Qmaster node is it's own app and has its own temp files folder to reference when rendering)
    I've been really disappointed with the amount of documentation Apple and Autodesk offer for Qmaster setup (as in zero insomuch as troubleshooting goes) and I hope that this thread will document a step-by-step process for anyone else trying to get this seemingly powerful production method to work.
    So, in summary:
    My Cluster setup seems fine, but when I submit a Maya file via Qmaster my Xservers falsely report 100% complete and my G5 Controller takes only 10 frames and begins rendering. I need to render to .tiff or to .psd as opposed to the Maya standard .iff.
    Again, I hope this thread will lead to a bit more effort by Apple and Ali- Autodesk in their product integration documentation.

    I can't answer all your questions but I can try to shed some light on some of them for you. I have not used QMaster with xserves but I have it working on my small LAN at home.
    Regarding question 2) Maya needs to be installed on all the computers that you are using in the cluster. You do not need to license them only install them. This will put the components necessary to complete the render tasks on those nodes. You should also realize how QM splits the Maya jobs up. It simply divides the job into equal numbers of frames for each node and sends it out. So be sure you cache all your particles/dynamics/fluids/hair/cloth etc before you submit the job. It does not use the collective power of the cluster to work on each frame (like MR satellite does). I do not submit Mental Ray jobs to the cluster but choose rather to use the MRsat at a batch from the command line.
    Question 1) Alias (now autodesk) does not recommend using a mixed network for rendering. I am not sure why. I have had mixed results on my end with MRsat.
    Question 3) I am not sure about the paths but, I know that each machine you are sending jobs to needs to have read/write access to the drives that are storing the files and where they are being written. I have to go to each of my machines and manually commect each of them to the file server drive before I can get a job to complete.

  • Installed 10.6.3 and Maya has same issues as in 10.6.1

    The graph editor is no longer usable on a setup with dual monitors when the graph editor window is opened on the secondary monitor. I also found the graph editor redraw glitch to be back as well (even if it is opened on the primary monitor). It worked fine in 10.6.2, and I thought I would pass it along.
    Argh! Looks like I gotta reinstall to factory settings.

    Everything was fine till last week when I installed the latest OSX updates. Maya 2010 was running just fine with 10.6.3, but the new update messed up everything again.
    After this update I cannot animate anything since the graphic editor and trax editor windows are completely out of control. When I try to select a keyframe on both editors the area where I drag the cursor shows ghosts of selection or random bits of images from desktop or other windows. It's totally bugged.
    It seems that the last update tried to fix some opengl issues on third part softwares, however, it seems to have an opposite result to maya 2010.
    Does the mac support read these reports? How can we tell them about these issues. I have report this problem to Autodesk, but as it was working just fine until osx update, it seems to be apple's falt.
    If anyone could somehow solve these problems please report it here!!
    By the way, 2009 is running ok. So, it is not only an apple issue, something on 2010 is not right as well.

  • Qmaster and Maya 7 (almost working?)

    Due to Muster (net-render tool for Maya) being mostly sucky we have decided to try and setup Qmaster for network rendering in our mac labs. Plus with using Qmaster we would have one unified interface for Shake and Compressor net rendering as well. I am able to submit compressor jobs to Qmaster just fine, but when I submit a maya job to Qmaster it just jumps to 100% and says it's successful. I never get any results from this. The status information window gives me this:

    Does anyone have Qmaster up and running and successfully using it for Maya? Submitting a compressor job to Qmaster is freaking easy, but Maya is driving me nuts. I would really appreciate some help. There is little to no documentation on how this works minus the basic setup quide.

    1. Maya is installed and in the same location on all the machines.
    - It wasn't on my Xserve and is now.
    2. The path to the Maya render command is the same path in QMaster batch.
    I copied the command line into terminal and got this:

    When I run this in the terminal it renders to the network drive great and appears to work.
    Looks like that worked. So now that I have maya installed on my server I get a different message in Qmaster after it's done.

    Minimum support specs are at least a 15" and a G5 machine since the window/UI needs that much space. It is still not Universal I believe so you will not see much better performance gains...

  • Using Maya, After Effect and Premier on intel mac

    Hi, am planning into buying an intel iMac and I just wanted to know if anybody has attempted to use After effects and Premier and Maya on the intel mac.
    I basically wanna know how the modeling, editing and rendering speeds would be using those 3 programs under Rosetta.
    Any ideas? Benchmarks? Suggestions?

    Premiere= does not save on Tiger not even on a G5 (last working OS version for Premiere 6.5 is Panther (10.3.9), and that's without QuickTime 7. Does not work on MacIntel.

    can anyone give me advise which graphics card and how much RAM I should get for the latest 2.3 G5? The applications I am going to use are:
    Adobe After FX, Photoshop and Illustrator CS, Logic, Pro Tools, Flash MX2004, and Maya 7 Unlimited (with student reduction) and some other software, which should not be too disturbing.
    I found this information about Maya, and am uncertain now which graphics cards could cause problems.
    "Maya 7.0 IS NOT qualified on systems using an Nvidia GF4Ti graphics cards and higher. A problem exists where the Trax editor and Dopesheet editor do not draw properly and can lead to a kernel panic. DO NOT upgrade to 10.4.3 at this time if you have an Nvidia GF4Ti graphics card or higher. We are working with Apple to get this issue resolved as soon as possible."
    For the rendering with Maya, I would like to aim for a high end graphics card, but would it work on my system? I am also uncertain, if Maya's student version is programmed for dual core processors, I know that the PLE version is not. It would be great, if someone who is using Maya 7 could tell me about their experience.

    The best place to ask is on the Maya forums.
    Maya is always having a problem with new hardware and Mac OS X updates, sometimes it's their fault and sometimes it's Apple's, so it's advised to not to update until they get their bugs worked out and you get the all clear sign from fellow more advanced Maya users.
    Cloning your boot drive is a excellent way to "go back" in case a OS update breaks Maya.
    I think the best hardware machine is a Quad, not a dual core. Dual cores are going to become standard across all computer lines here next year, from laptops to ordinary desktops just like single processors are now.
    So for $800 more you get twice the amount of processors, triple the hardware life expectancy and you can continue to grow with Maya updates as they tax all four cores eventually. A Quad is cheaper per year than present dual cores so you'll save money not having to upgrade next year or so.
    When you get your machine, I'm almost sure 10.4.3 will not be pre-installed, if it is you can wipe it and install 10.4 from Tiger disk and upgrade to 10.4.2 from Apple downloads page.
    Get some RAM, Tiger overrides Photoshop CS2's RAM limit and gives great performance. The rest of Adobe apps need some work still to optimize for the hardware.

    Except for #8, you're talking about the new entry-level MacBook Pro for $1,799.00 (see at http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MD103LL/A). It's a little less expensive at Amazon and you won't have to pay tax on it until you file next year instead of up-front.
    It will do everything you need and, yes, you can upgrade it yourself when you get more cash. In fact, if you're willing to spend another $160 (still under your $2K limit) you can go ahead and upgrade the RAM to 16 GB. Later, spend $400 and put in a 512GB SSD.

    There are no "cheep (cheap?)" 2G sticks. They are all expensive. Besides, it is most unwise to buy RAM for any Mac based simply on a low price. "Cheep" RAM is one of the most common causes of user problems.

  • Qmaster stopps Maya rendering after the first submitted job

    I tried to render some jobs with qmaster 2 and maya 8. Everything worked fine until the first submitted job is rendered. It seems that qmaster can't quit this first job after rendering and so the batch render stopped. Any ideas?
