af:poll stops polling on bean method call

Using JDev 10.1.3.5.0. Yes, it's archaic.
I've spent the past two days trying to get a <af:poll> component to work with no success. I've gone through tutorials and gotten them to work, but my personal use case will not.
A dialog window opens. When this dialog loads, a poll component begins refreshing a progress indicator every 2 seconds. This works; I can see the refresh happening. Inside this dialog, a user then clicks a "Start" button, triggering an actionEvent method.
    public void startAction(ActionEvent actionEvent) {
        // initialize progress indicator's range model to 0
        this.simpleBoundedRangeModel.start(actionEvent);
        // Begin performing a business process.
        ManagementDashboardExport pbm = (ManagementDashboardExport)EL.get("#{ManagementDashboardExport}");
        pbm.exportDashboard();
    }In that bean, a process runs which then updates the progress indicator's model
    public String exportDashboard(){
        private PollingBackingBean pbm = (PollingBackingBean)EL.get("#{PollingBB}");
        // do a bunch of work and at a certain milestone, set that 20% of the work has been done.
        pbm.getSimpleBoundedRangeModel().setValue(20);
        // continue doing work
     }The problem is that at the point exportDashboard() begins, the polling quits! The program keeps running and eventually finishes, but the progress indicator never refreshes.
How can a file download/upload process work, but my process not? This seems like some kind of threading issue. I'm trying to show the progress of a running process. Any ideas on how I can get this to work?
Thanks,
Will

I am using a recent version but this is a thread that Google took me to when searching "start stop af:poll"
I had my Eureka moment yesterday and have everything working now but maybe for the benefit of others I will describe my case here:
What I want to do is start a background task that performs some long running task taking several minutes.
This task updates a progress number in a DB table while it is progressing.
During this task I want to popup a modal dialog with a progress bar.
In order to update the progress bar I want to client to poll and execute and read to iterator for the VO containing the record with the progress percent.
When the task is complete I want polling to stop.
My solution consists of an jspx page and viewScope Bean
on the jspx page:
I have an af:commandButton to start the task with id="cbstart" and an actionListener in a Bean
an af:popup containing and af:dialog containing an af:progressIndicator  bound to a BoundedRangeModel in the Bean
an af:poll id="poll" pollListener set to a method named poll in the Bean also bind it to a poller object in the Bean.
Set the interval to -1 so it starts off disabled.
Now look at this from the point of view of what initiates work there are only 2 types of actions:
1 The push on the command button
2 The poll events
1. When the command button is pushed
* start the actual task
* start the poller
* popup the dialog
So in the bean this looks like:
    public void onCbStart(ActionEvent actionEvent) {
        startTask(); // kicks of background task
        // popup the popup
        RichPopup.PopupHints hints = new RichPopup.PopupHints();
        popup.show(hints);
        // enable the popup
        poll.setInterval(2000);
This was at first not working for me because I did not really understand PPR. Polling is done by the browser. On the server side the poll object is now has its interval property set to 2000 but in the client it does not know about it yet. We should have made sure we set cbstart as a partialTrigger
of the ad:poll so the client side poll object will update its state after the press of the command button.
2, Now on the poll event ifself in the bean add code like this:
   public void poll(PollEvent pollEvent) {
        // re-execute query so we can get current progress value
        DCBindingContainer bc = (DCBindingContainer)BindingContext.getCurrent().getCurrentBindingsEntry();
        OperationBinding exe = bc.getOperationBinding("ExecuteWithParams");
        exe.execute();
        // get current progress value
        AttributeBinding obj = (AttributeBinding)bc.getControlBinding("Progress");
        BigDecimal iv = (BigDecimal)obj.getInputValue();
       // Update progress in our BoundedRangeModel
       rm.setProgress(iv.intValue());
       // If we reach 100% we are done
        if ( rm.getValue() >= rm.getMaximum() ) {
            // stop polling
            poll.setInterval(-1);
So what client side components may require updates after a poll?
1 - progressIndicator
So we add poll to the partial triggers of the af:progressIndicator
Again I was baffled at first why the polling did not stop. Then I finally figured out that the poll object itself needs to have poll as a partial trigger since in the poll we change its interval to -1 in order to disable it and it need to read to back on the client
So partial triggers for the af:poll need to be "cbstart poll"
Lessons learned:
1 - If you need to have more than 1 thing happen from a button press like for example, start solve, popup, start polling, you need to do this through a bean and not just using bindings.
2 - Think about the 'starting' actions on the page and all the resulting parts of the page that may have their state changed resuling from that initial event and set your partial triggers based on that.

  • Load balancing and bean-to-bean method calls

    Hello!
              Let's assume the following scenario: a clustered environment, and a

    Hi, I am using bounded task flow method call - which is default activity. The outcome of method call will go to a router and that decides which method/page fragment has to be selected. Sankari Kannan

    Hi Sankari,
    Since after the initial method call, your control flow has the router as its next stop, the //method-call/method/outcome/fixed-outcome can be set to a literal value(go to router) instead of an EL.
    And let router decide where to go next(by EL).
    Or you can discard your router activity, let the method-call activity decide where to go directly by setting //method-call/method/outcome/to-string to "true". Then the return value of the method decide the next stop.

  • Start and stop poll

    hey I've tried to stop a poll by setting its interval to -1. But it won't stop! what could be the reason?
    I'm calling poll.setInterval(-1) from the method which is invoked when the poll event takes place..
    any suggestions on this?
    thanx

    I can confirm that the second method does work if the clientComponent attribute is set to true for the af:poll component.
    This seems to be a better method that setRendered(false), as I noticed that even though the pollEvent isn't fired after setting the rendered attribute to false, it does still poll the server at the said interval, and any loss of connection will result in the popup message over and over until the window is closed. When using the second method this does not occur.
    Setup a statusIndicator on the page and you will see it still polling.

    Matthew.

  • Reg: How to Stop Polling of JDBC Adapter without Scheduling the adapter

    Dear Gurus,
    Here I am having one requirement. My clients wants to send data from JDBC adapter (ORcale System table) to R3 system via RFC.
    His Requirement::
    1. He is not telling the time of data flow from Oracle server so that based on that we can schedule the adapter in the Communication Channel monitoring (Availablitiy Time Planning) or Else we can Schedule by deciding the setting of the polling interval time.
    2. He is telling that When ever he waants to send the data he will place one dummy file in the File Adapter FTP location so that it will became an Indication for u to poll the jdbc adapter and to transfer the data to R3.
    3. Untill he keeps the file or gives indication he doesn;t want to communicate with Oracle server due to some security and it s a most important data base he doesn't want to disturb that Oracle Server as so many business are running  on that.....
    We Proposed::
    1. Atleast you need to tell the scheduling time or poll interval time so that we can schedule our adapter.
    but he s not accepting for this
    2. Atleast U need to give access for Data base to enter one more extra field like STATUS CODE so that we will add one number and we keep on Update in the Update table and based on that Update table statement it will poll.
    but he s not even accepting for this
    3. Finally we prposed that to create another table in the Oracle SYstem as Dulplicate Table which is similar to Standard Orginal table when ever he wants to pick the data please keep that data in this Duplicate TABle so that JDBC adapter will pick the data from thsi TABLE instead of picking the data from that standard table so that it will not effect any standard table data in the table.
    but he s not even accepting for this
    We have done some R & D:::
    1. WE approached even through BPM and via switch conditions is one scenario
       FILE RECEIVE >SWITCH CONDITION> RECEIVE AND SEND or else EXIT
    2. Using correlation in anotehr scenario means correlating File adapter and JDBC and based on one dynamica value it will goes to SEND STEP ( RECE IVE --> RECEIVE --> SEND STEPS )
    Even though we know this...concept that...we jsut tried::
    In BPM we can control the flow in XI 3.0 but we cannot Stop the Polling of JDBC adapter at backend because one the data comes from FILE adapter it will keep on HOLD untill it receives the JDBC from Oracle then based on the condition or Correlation it will goes futher SEND step means after that file adapter is picking file or not ...what ever it may be JDBC will polls at backend and brings that data to BPM"
    Hence sugest me How to Stop Polling of JDBC Adapter without Scheduling the adapter or else using STATUS CODE Update statements in JDBC Tables
    Regards:
    Amar Srinivas Eli

    Hi! All,
    Finally I decided to do the scenario in two steps:
    1: FILE REQ --> JDBC REQ -->JDBC RES --> FILE RECV
    2: FILE RECV --> RFC
    But I am getting issue while doing first scenario
    Desgn :
    I have created 2 Synchronous interfaces :
    1) FILE 2 JDBC REQ
    In this a) out put message is FILE  Req
              b) Input msage:; FILE RES
    2} JDBC2FILE RECV
            a) Output mesage;; JDBC REQ
            b) Input Msge :: JDBC Response
    Mappings:
    1) File REQ-->JDBC REQ
    2) JDBC RES-->FILE RES
    Interface mappings:
    1: FILE 2 JDBC REQ--> JDBC 2 FLE RECV
    CONFIGURATION ::
    1: One Seder File CC
    2: Two reciever CC's one is for JDBC RECEIVER and other s FILE RECEIVER
    3; One Sender Agreement
    4: 2 Recver agreements
    5: One Interface Determination and
    6: One RECCV Determination
    My Question;;
    1. First let confirm whether my development steps are right or not ?
    2: Another thing s I am not sure reg Configuration Steps means
    whetehr one interface determination and one Receiver Determinations are required or not as these are synchronous Interfaces
    3: main Issue is::::
    If my scenario s FILE2RFC2FILE then I will get RFC response automatically but here issue is this is JDBC
    My reqquirement is By sending one Field from fILE to JDBC REQ it needs to send entire TAbLE records as a Response to file as XML
    without having Sender JDBC how can I send the JDBC Res to FILE and If that is the case then again JDBC adapter is polling which is contradict to the client requuirement which i explained above.
    pleas suggest me the Detailed steps mainly Colloboration agreements and logical routings and
    also explain in detail if i can  go for BPM
    Also give cleear blogs but before giving make sure that it contains detailed screen shots because aIready gone thorugh
    Scenario File-JDBC-RFC
    File<-->JDBC Sync coomunication.

  • How to call a bean method from javascript event

    Hi,
    I could not find material on how to call a bean method from javascript, any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    Basically, I would like to call a method that I have written in the page java bean, or in the session bean, or application bean, or an external bean, from the javascript events (mouseover, on click, etc...) of a ui jsf component. • How to call a bean method through a javascript function

    I dont discover any problems calling the bean method in this maner:
    <%= helpdesk.data() %>
    But, when I use a Button Onclick= to call the script function and which then is going call my bean method
    an error on the page is reported!
    I have include som code which gives you the idea of what Iam searching for. And is it possible to call
    the bean method without doing from a new jsp page?
    If you have any suggestions to why it doesnt work, please let me know.
    I use Apache Tomcat 4.0
    Best regards Micah.

    </head>
    <body>
    <input type="button" value="Broadcast" onclick= broadcast()>

    It's actually quite simple:
    Beans run server-side
    Javascript runs client-side
    So you will never be able to run server-side-code thru the client...

    Thank you and merry christmas !

    Hi,
    a managed property only gives you a anlde to a bean or property, it doesn't execute it. To execute a bean, you can use a custom JSF PhaseListener that calls a bean method. The reference to the bean is achieve through value binding
    ValueBinding vb = FacesContect.getCurrentInstance().getApplication().createValueBinding("Name of Managed Bean);
    TypeOfBean theBean =(TypeOfBean) vb.getValue(FacesContext.getCurrentInstance());
    .... theBean.theMethod() ...

  • Calling a bean method on select of Combo box item

    Hi
    On select of Combo box item in a form, text fields in the same form should be populated
    dynamically.Is it possible to call a bean method which does this,by calling onSelect() method
    of combo box ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sridevi

    Uff, sorry!
    I ment that you write some code for the "onSelect" event which sends a request to the server with the selected value: onSelect="self.location.href='<%= request.getRequestURI()%>?selectedVal= ' + this.selectedIndex;"

  • Calling a backing bean method after load of fragment in adf

    I needed to call a backing bean method after page load of fragment in adf.
    I used the method suggested in:
    https://community.oracle.com/message/11044570
    only difference is im giving the if clause as:
    if (refreshFlag == RegionBinding.RENDER_MODEL ) {
    instead of
    if (refreshFlag == RegionBinding.PREPARE_MODEL)
    It was working fine, but page was not getting refreshed so used the code as mentioned in example:
    public void refresh() {
              FacesContext facesContext = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
              String refreshpage = facesContext.getViewRoot().getViewId();
              ViewHandler  viewHandler =facesContext.getApplication().getViewHandler();
              UIViewRoot viewroot =  viewHandler.createView( facesContext, refreshpage);
              viewroot.setViewId(refreshpage);
              facesContext.setViewRoot(viewroot);
    Now issue is once page is loaded and backing bean method is called, the refresh code refreshes the page and upon page load, refresh method is called again in recursive fashion.
    please advise what to do in such scenario?
    I tried to do selective refresh using some variable(also with static) but it does not help as page wont be refresh at all or page will keep refreshing recursively.

    Use clientListener on the page load event
    <af:document id=”d1″>
        <af:serverListener type=”onloadEvent”
                           method=”#{<managedbean name>.<method name>}”/>
        <af:clientListener method=”onLoadClient” type=”load”/>
        <af:resource type=”javascript”>
        function onLoadClient(event) {
          AdfCustomEvent.queue(event.getSource(),”onloadEvent”,{},false);
          return true;
        </af:resource>

  • NoSuchMethodException calling a session bean method from a web service

    I am running on NetWeaver 6.40 SP10 on Windows.
    I have a Java class (not a SessionBean) exposed as a web service where I invoke a session bean method with an argument that is another Java class (basically, just a JavaBean with some getters and setters).  I am getting a strange reflection-related error when I invoke a session bean method.  The exception I see is a 'java.lang.reflect.UndeclaredThrowableException', and if I unwrap it with 'ex.getCause()', I see 'java.lang.NoSuchMethodException: com.xx.ejb.PersistentObjectSBObjectImpl0.createR3Config(com.xx.common.R3Config)'
    I have spent several days trying to come up with a testcase for this, but to no avail.  The calling class is:
    --- snip R3UpdateTest.java ---
    package com.xx.server.webse;
    import com.xx.ejb.*;
    import com.xx.common.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.ejb.*;
    import java.rmi.*;
    import javax.naming.*;

              try {
                   PersistentObjectSB poSB = getPersistentObjectSB();
                   R3Config r3cfg = new R3Config();
                   r3cfg.setR3HostName(a);
                   r3cfg.setR3SystemNumber(b);
                   r3cfg.setRfcUserName(c);
                   r3cfg.setRfcPassword(d);

                   r3cfg.setRfcLanguage(f);
                   poSB.createR3Config(r3cfg);
              } catch (Exception ex) {
                   retval = "Exception: " + ex + ", Causing Exception : " + ex.getCause();
              return retval;
          * Private methods
         private PersistentObjectSB getPersistentObjectSB() throws RemoteException, CreateException, NamingException {
              Properties props = new Properties();
              props.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sap.engine.services.jndi.InitialContextFactoryImpl");
              props.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "localhost:50004");
              InitialContext ctx;
              ctx = new InitialContext(props);
              PersistentObjectSBHome poSBHome =
                   (PersistentObjectSBHome) javax.rmi.PortableRemoteObject.narrow(
                        ctx.lookup("xx.com/CMPOBEAR/PersistentObjectSBBean"),
                        PersistentObjectSBHome.class);
              return poSBHome.create();
    --- end R3UpdateTest.java ---
    If I change the createR3Config() method to take an argument of class 'Object' instead of an argument of class 'R3Config', and then cast the object back into an R3Config in the method body, it all works fine.
    Any clues, anyone?
    Thanks,

    Sure, I can show them to you.  They are very similar to a couple of non-DC classes/projects I put together to try and duplicate the problem.
    First, the interface, PersistentObjectSB.java:
    package com.xx.ejb;
    import javax.ejb.EJBObject;
    import com.xx.common.R3Config;
    import java.rmi.RemoteException;
    public interface PersistentObjectSB extends EJBObject {
          * Business Method.
         public void updateR3Config(R3Config r3Config) throws RemoteException;
          * Business Method.
         public void createR3Config(R3Config r3Config) throws RemoteException;
    And the implementation, PersistentObjectSBBean.java:
    package com.xx.ejb;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.ejb.*;
    import javax.naming.*;
    import com.xx.common.*;
    import com.xx.interfaces.*;
    * @ejbHome <{com.xx.ejb.PersistentObjectSBHome}>
    * @ejbLocal <{com.xx.ejb.PersistentObjectSBLocal}>
    * @ejbLocalHome <{com.xx.ejb.PersistentObjectSBLocalHome}>
    * @ejbRemote <{com.xx.ejb.PersistentObjectSB}>
    * @stateless
    public class PersistentObjectSBBean implements SessionBean {
         private R3ConfigEJBLocalHome _r3ConfigEJBLocalHomeIf = null;

  • Problem Calling Remote Session Bean Method

    Need help. I am trying to call a method in a remote stateless session bean in an EJB in my web application from a stateless session bean in a different EJB in the web application. I am getting a run-time error that says,
    "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: dtpitb.common.sb.reports.CommonReportsHome"
    ref = ctx.lookup( jndiName );
    // Cast to Local Home Interface using RMI-IIOP
    commonReportsHome = (CommonReportsHome)
    PortableRemoteObject.narrow(ref, CommonReportsHome.class);
    If while in a session bean of an EJB, I want to call a public method in the session bean of a totally different EJB, is there something in particular I am missing. I can make the call from the web application code. I can make a remote call from this session bean to itself in the exact same fashion. I just can't call a session bean in another EJB. All thoughts are welcome.
    Thanks,
    Pete

    Thanks for replying. That could very well be the case I suppose. I'm using JBuilder and WebLogic, and JBuilder pretty much does all of the deployment descriptor code for me. However, maybe this is something I need to incorporate manually.
    One EJB is in the same project as the web application code. The other EJB (common_ejb) is in another project. The calling session bean is in the project with the web app, and the remote session bean method that I'm targeting is in the common EJB session bean. Both EJBs are included in the web app's WEB-INF\lib dir and in the war file.
    So theoretically, this isn't an unconventional practice I assume?
    Thanks,
    Pete
