Afp server-files won't erase

Hello.
I have some files on my afp server that will not delete. When I try to delete them, I am told that they are "in use". After I restart all the computers in the mac lab (to make sure that they "can't use" the file), I still get the issue. The files are not "locked" and I have full read/write/edit privledges.
Strangley, I can delete some files, but some will not.
Any ideas?
Leonard

Hi, I work with Joseph and I thought maybe I could help fill out a little of the picture here. We noticed that we had full access rights to the files (permissions were ok and there were no fs flags and no acls) and that if we used terminal level commands to access the files we could read/edit/delete them no problem but any of the machines accessing the files through AFP would give us this "file in use" error. Logging the affected users out of the AFP server and then back in didn't seem to have any effect, but after playing around for a while I noticed that if I deleted the metadata component of the file (easy to do since its on an XSan FS - I just deleted the ._ file of the same name) and then logged out any user that had trouble with the file and then logged back in I could edit the file again. Yet to determine if the problem comes back and I'd like to test on more than just a handful of files. So, I'd have your IT guys try and do that and see if it helps. For us at least, it doesn't appear to be a file locking issue, but rather an AFP server issue. Anyway, hope this is somewhat helpful.

  • Pdf file won't erase

Good day all, I received a file via email for tax. It wont open via save, quick look or putting it on the desk top. Message is, Adobe cannot open tax-file.pdf as it might have been damaged etc. I also can't get rid of it by putting it in trash. How do I print it or just throw it away? [ I'll get another via fax]. Thanks Duncan

If it's in the Trash can, hold your Option key down when selecting Empty Trash. The file may be locked.

  • Problem saving a Photoshop file from an AFP server

    Hi All,
Just want to know if some of you guys are experiencing this and how you solved it.
Basically we have an AFP server and OD services. All mac clients are bound to OD and are using the OD account for logging in. Most of the user are using photoshop. However when one edits a file and wanted to save/replace it, photoshop generates an error saying its locked forcing phothsop users to do file SaveAs and rename the file. We have been doing the AFP server and editing photoshop directly through the network for almost 1 and 1/2 years but not experienced this issues until later that we added more users/employees in our network and this issue came up
    The error is
Could not save "Photoshop File.psd" because the file is locked. Use the 'Get Info' command in the finder to unlock the file.
We are able to create folders/files to where the photoshop is saving and other applications seems to save/replace files fine except for photoshop.
Has anyone encounter this and how did you solve it?

I found the solution here, http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4644850#4644850 and the steps are as follows,
In Workgroup Manager (OS X Server) select the group you want to apply the setting to, the choose Preferences.
Choose the "Details" tab and add .GlobalPreferences.plist
Clear all the settings, and add a new key called NSUmask, then choose "integer" with a value of 2
Next time your users for that group log in and they save a file it will be rw-rw-r
The default umask for Macs is 022 (rw-r--r--), this changes it to 002.  I didn't try manually changing the default umask on the individual workstations, but I assume that would work also.

I am using 10.5.1 on iMac.
    I guess this shouldn't be a problem.
I download a file from university's afp server, but fails when if has downloaded 2GB (the file is larger than 2GB) with error code 1309.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Thank you.

  • Indesign CS3 & 10.6.2 server: file corruption

    Hi All,
I'm having problems with one of our customer's setup. They're experiencing some sort of file corruption on Indesign CS3 files. These files are worked on by students in classrooms. At random, files won't open anymore in Indesign CS3 (or in CS4),so they need to start all over again. At first, file corruption occured seldom, but in the last few days I get too many reports. So I definately think something is at hand here.
The students log in to their network home folders. Client and server(s) are mac os x 10.6.2.
Clients / servers are fresh installed last x-mas. 2 fileservers (1 classroom, 1 homedirectory), 1 dedicated od server, 700 students, 45 classes. Both fileservers are new iron.
Before this, I had the same setup in 10.4.11, and this worked flawlessly for almost two years. So I know I can work with this setup over a network.
Before I start suspecting (and swapping) hardware, does anyone have pointers where to look or tests I could do?
    Much appreciated.
    Edgar

Well, going back to 10.4 is not an option. The previous servers (PPC G5 xserves) running the 10.4 setup have been sold. Current hardware was delivered with only 10.6 software so that rules out switching back to 10.5 as well.
You mention ACL's. I could dive into that. Since 10.5 Apple introduced default ACL's for the spotlight indexing process. The share is rather simple, it uses mainly posix permissions because it contains the homedirectories. In that perspective, the only change (besides a new afp stack) is the spotlight ACL. I could remove it, spotlight isn't running on that share.
I don't think I can switch to SMB for the user homedir stuff. If it was a normal data share it wouldn't be a problem.
Seems I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place..

  • ITunes library file won't load

*iTunes won't open my library file.*
The library is about five years old. I started it on a WinXP computer then moved it to my Mac, and it now lives on a USB/FireWire external drive formatted as FAT32.
I've been accessing the drive over the network via AFP, with the drive physically connected to my home server via USB.
Last week I connected it to my Mac via FireWire last week for faster access. iTunes reported most but not all of the songs as on a missing network share with the same drive name. All the MP3s are there.
*Now, iTunes won't open the library at all -- it's greyed out when I try to select it.*
Opening the default iTunes library on my Mac works fine, and I'm still using iTunes 7 so it's not a compatibility issue.
*Rebuilding the library from the XML file won't work* either, because only about 3K of my 20K+ songs show up if I do that.
Now what? I need the iTunes library for a DJ gig coming up. Please help.

This issue persists whether the drive is accessed via AFP network or FireWire.

  • Can connect via VPN, but can't access AFP server on same Xserve

    Hi:
I've set up our XServe with MacOS X Server 10.5.2 to do AFP and VPN (L2TP only; PPTP is disabled). The XServe is a standalone server, not connected to any other direstory server.
I can connect to the XServe's AFP server from my Mac over our wired and wireless network. The AFP server shows up in the sidebar of Finder windows. So far, so good.
I am able to successfully connect to our network via the VPN with Mac OS X 10.5.2 client (on two different machines) using L2TP through our network's firewall (on a Netopia T1 router; UDF ports 500 and 4500 and IP Protocol 50 and 51 are open) using a shared secret.
But I cannot connect to the XServe itself to use Server Admin or AFP (using afp://server.company.com or afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx via the Go > Connect to Server command).
The error I get while connecting to the 10.5.2 AFP server is Some data in apf://server.mycompany.com could not be read or written (Error Code -36 ). I saw this error associated with a SMB problem in 10.4.x, but SMB is not running.
Other iChat users in my office also do not automatically show up in the Bonjour list when I connect to the network. Other computers on our network do not appear in the sidebar of a Finder window. (I'm told these are to be expected, as Bonjour isn't supported (in the "local area Bonjour" over a WAN link - it's purely a multicast feature on the network in the office, and won't be routed across the VPN link. True?)
Now, here's the odd part. There is a second server (v10.4.11) on our network running AFP. I can connect to it (using afp://server.company.com via the Go > Connect to Server command) and mount its various sharepoints via the VPN.
The only thing I see in the VPN log that seems amiss is this (but I have no idea what it means):
    Tue Mar 11 23:09:27 2008 : Unsupported protocol 0x8057 received
--Both the 10.5.2 and the 10.4.11 servers have DNS properly configured (though our ISP; we're not running our own DNS).
--Both servers and the client have public IP addresses and have the same subnet mask. Network Utility confirms this while connected to the VPN.
--NAT is not running. The ISP is responding with public IPs for the servers.
--The firewall for the 10.5.2 server is not running (but will be once I get this all working).
--The IP address range for the VPN server doesn't overlap our DHCP pool (which also currently uses public IP addresses).
--Any user can access any service.
--No network routing definitions have been set up.
--In essence, I've followed the steps on Pages 141-142 of the Network Services Admin Guide.
One other note: After I connect, the Network Preferences > VPN > Advanced > TCP/IP window shows the IP address for the client just fine (assigned from the VPN pool), but lists the router as having the IP address of the XServe (rather than the router on the network). Is that normal?
I'm hoping I don't need to have the XServe run DNS as an internal LAN DNS server.... And I'm not sure why I would have to if I can already successfully connect to the 10.4.11 AFP server .
What simple step am I missing?
    TIA,
    mm

"I am able to successfully connect to our network via the VPN with Mac OS X 10.5.2 client (on two different machines) using L2TP through our network's firewall (on a Netopia T1 router; UDF ports 500 and 4500 and IP Protocol 50 and 51 are open) using a shared secret."
I suspect you mean UDP ports and you might need UDP port 1701 open too.
You only need IP protocol 50 (ESP), protocol 51 (AH) isn't used. And ESP is only used when client and server isn't behind NAT (when NAT is used only the UDP ports are used).
    "Unsupported protocol 0x8057 received"
This is usually seen when you can't get GRE through but since you don't use PPTP I can't be sure why this is registered in the logs. Sometimes when connecting using PPTP you have to disconnect and then reconnect for everything to work - you might try this for L2TP too.
But if you already can reach services on any LAN nodes through the VPN I wouldn't bother with it.
As you have a firewall in front of the server you need a second alias IP on the server that you can use to get at the services running on the server through the VPN. The firewall blocks all ports protocols not opened - that's why you can't use the server main IP even if the VPN is up.
The netmask is used by all nodes to determine how big your subnet is: what part of the IP number is the network number and what range the node number is in => really: should traffic be directed to a node on the same LAN or sent directly to the gw/router for forwarding.
What you can't do is connect from a NATed network to another NATed network that both are using the same network number. (That's why people should stay away from using the "default" 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 networks for VPN server LANs).
Try your settings at http://www.jodies.de/ipcalc to see what I mean.
"...lists the router as having the IP address of the XServe (rather than the router on the network). Is that normal?"
Yes. The VPN server is the VPN gw/router.
"The firewall for the 10.5.2 server is not running (but will be once I get this all working)."
If you already have a firewall in front of your servers that is a bit redundant.
"--No network routing definitions have been set up."
"I'm hoping I don't need to have the XServe run DNS as an internal LAN DNS server"
You need routing definitions if you want to setup a split tunnel VPN or all traffic is routed through the VPN when connected. The VPN becomes the default gw.
Without ipforwarding ON in the server you can only reach nodes on the server LAN - not Internet.
DNS is needed for your servers forward and reverse names/IPs for advanced services but doesn't need to run in any of your own servers.
If you decide to do a split tunnel VPN config (adding public and private routing definitions) a reachable DNS IP for VPN clients (in VPN config on server) is needed for VPN clients or they can't use names to find anything. To reach this DNS IP if public/not on your server LAN, you need your server to forward IP DNS lookups and have a routing definition for it.
A split tunnel VPN only send traffic for your server LAN through the VPN and all other traffic directly to the local gw/router (Internet).

  • External hard drive not showing up on AFP server

    hi
i have successfully connected a couple of times to a firewire external hard drive connected to my dad's iMac over the internet (AFP server) for the purpose of backing up some files, but now it doesn't show up at all as a volume when i connect to his iMac through finder/go/connect to server. i don't believe that any settings were changed, so don't understand why it isn't showing up. currently when i get info on the drive 'shared folder' is checked, everyone has permission to read and write and 'ignore ownership on this volume' is checked, and file sharing is enabled in system preferences/sharing.
does anyone have any ideas of what i can do to get the drive to show up again?
    thanks
    nick

OK, I figured it out (in case anyone else needs to know) with this information from the Western Digital site:
Macintosh Operating System 10.3.x or earlier will only recognize FAT32 partitions that are smaller than 128-gigabytes. Multiple FAT32 partitions smaller than 128-gigabytes will need to be created in order for Macintosh Operating System 10.3.x or earlier to recognize the partitions. You will need to use a Windows based computer to create FAT32 partitions, as Macintosh does not have the ability to create them.
Macintosh Operating System 10.4.x or later can recognize FAT32 partitions over 128-gigabytes.

  • Issue with AFP server dropping connections on 10.8.5 server 2.2.2

We are having issues with users getting dropped from their AFP server shares.
These issues did not start happening until we upgraded to 10.8.5 and server 2.2.2
the first symptoms were an occasional user would lose his / her active connection while copying files. They were unable to disconnect from the network shares without physically disconnecting the LAN or disabling the network on their system. Once the connection was removed they could reconnect to the network and establish their AFP shares again.
However this his escalated to every user losing connections to their AFP shares at the same time.
The server has no AFP error in the AFP error log however we are getting diskutil crash reports at around the same time. (See Below)
    The server has
smalltree 1x6 8254 with latest drivers supporting a LACP bonded 6 pair connecting to an edgecore (LACP configured)switch.
small tree 10Gb card directly connected to an edit station.
onboard ethernet connected to switch in support of DHCP & DNS. (previous version of server would not see the bonded pair)
    Two Accusys A12S2's
(we did not have this dropping connection issue before the upgrade to server 2.2.2 and OSX 10.8.5)
Users connected to any network connection to the server appear to be affected when the AFP shares are disconnected. Direcet connect, onboard ethernet port and Bonded pair connections)
diskutil verifies all shared drives appear to be ok. (All Green)

  • Premiere Pro 4 File Won't Open

    Hi all
I have an adobe premiere pro file that won't open. When I double click on it, the load project bar gets to about four fiths of the way, then it just stops. The last time I saved the file, I saved it to my computer, then I saved it to a portable hard drive to back it up (around four minutes later). Both versions of the file won't open. The previous file will open, but I have done 30 hours more work since then (on the new file). I thought it was enough to be saving every few minutes, saving back ups to a portable hard drive... I also have a raid 1 configuration! I was never expecting this. When I leave the Premiere Pro on the Load Project screen, it stays there for hours.
If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

    Hi John
Thanks for getting back to me. I just looked in autosave. The file that won't open was last saved at 11:02pm on the 16th. There was an autosave project at 10.25pm on the 16th, and that wouldn't open either (it crashes at exactly the same place as the other one). However, there was an autosave file at 6:17pm on the 16th that would open. Curious though, it doesn't seem to have a lot of the changes I thought I had made by this time. It seems to be earlier than this (although perhaps my memory isn't serving me correctly). Should there be more autosaves that this? I had the program open pretty much that whole time, and nothing between 6:17 and 10:25.
Anyway, that's a start! Something must have happened between 6.17pm and 10.25pm that'd made the file go kaput. I would love to know what, so I can avoid this happening again. First things first though, it'd be fantastic to get the file that isn't opening working.
Thanks for your swift response too, Jim. I opened PP and tried to open the file from the interface. The load project bar stopped at the same place. I can open other projects fine. As to your last suggestion, I created a new project, and went to File/Import then clicked on the file in question. It started importing, then the progress bar froze at exactly the same place. I'm not sure if I did this correctly. Is there another way to import a PP file into an existing PP?
Thanks again for your time. It's just nice to speak to someone about this because I really freaked out when it happened.

  • AFP log files not rotating

Wen I enable logging on my AFP server the log files aren't being rotated correctly. Does anyone know the location of the script Apple uses to rotate the log files in /Library/Logs/AppleFileService. There must be a bug.
The AFP service seems to ignore the interval you set for rotating the AppleFileServiceAccess.log. I had it set to 1 day but its only rotating the log files every 7 days. What's worse. when it does try to rotate the log it doesn't work completely. It doesn't remove the old uncompressed log and stops writing new new entries tot he log file. The only way to get the AFP service to log entries again is to stop the AFP service, rename the log file, then start the service again.

I'm observing this same bug on a 10.5.6 server. Is this a known issue?

  • Px6-300d really slow... is it capable of serving files?

Hi, trying to wrap my head around what my IT guy did... i WAS running OS XServe w/ XRaid connected thru fiberoptic. the Raid drives died (it was about 10yrs old w/ daily usage) ... so we decided to replace. My IT guy replaced that configuration with JUST px6-300d, the i/o speed are horrible. IT guy is MIA, so i'm trying to figure this out.
    My first question is:
Is this NAS capable of serving files at a good speed like my previous config?
does the NAS need to be connected to the XServe? it currently isn't.....
example... just a copy of an 81meg file TO another mac on the network takes 1 minute 14 seconds.
the same file to the NAS takes 1minute 42 seconds.
    any suggestions appreciated

dianneszm, what made your IT guy think the PX6 would be the equivalent a 4Gb FC connection?  This is a 1GbE connnection.
If this is to MACs what protocol are you using?  You may need to experiment as AFP can be poor with some NAS, have you tried NFS?

  • Is AFP for file sharing secure

I have a G4 on my Home LAN as a file server. In setting up Sharing under System Preferences is there a "right way" of ensuring security. My concern is not as much about users on the LAN/WiLan but I have a AirPort on the LAN also which is used as an access to the Internet. So my concern is unauthorized access to the G4-server via the Internet.

When you say you have "Airport on the LAN", do you mean an Airport Extreme router base station/router (or Airport Express base station/router, or Time Capsule/router).
If you do have any router between your home network and the internet, then that router is acting as a hardware firewall and will block any unsolicited requests from the internet. That is to say, your AFP shared file systems will NOT be seen by the internet in general.
The exception would be is if you configure your router to allow port 548 to be forwarded from the internet to the Mac offering the AFP volume.
Another exception would be if you put your AFP Mac server in the router's DMZ (not all routers support a DMZ concept, and you have to intentionally configure the router to allow this to happen).
If you are using WiFi, it is suggested you have a good WPA password enabled on your WiFi base station. This will keep neighbors and people driving by your home from accessing your WiFi and those your home network.
The bottom line is that as long as you have a router between your Macs and the ISP broadband connection, no one on the internet is going to see your AFP shared volumes.

  • Connection to AFP server unreliable

When my users edit files on our AFP server running 10.4.9 server they report intermittent network errors when they try to save files that they have created and are editing on the server. There is nothing in the AFP logs that suggests the cause. This has been happening roughly since the last security update, around April 19.
    Any suggestions?

Suggestions...not yet, but does this happen with any particular app, or with all apps. Are they using network homes, portable homes, or just connecting to the file server and using local homes? Have you checked the client logs?
Not that I can necessarily help, but this would be helpful info
