After Effects + OpenGL
I know that this subject was already touched upon here a couple of years ago but I want to refresh it.
I'm interested in implementing OpenGL in After Effects' plugin. Is is possible yet? If yes - how?
This is my simple example code I would like to use in After Effects plugin:
int size = 500;
glColor4f(1, 0, 0, 1);
glBegin(GL_POLYGON);
glVertex2f(-size, -size);
glVertex2f(-size, size);
glVertex2f(size, size);
glVertex2f(size, -size);
glEnd();
Any help would be appreciated.
Hello everybody.
I managed to make opengl work within AE. I'm creating an offset window with nsopenglview, grab all the pixels and add them to the footage. That works ok.
But I have some quetsions about opengl in AE.
1. I have an Edit button to change some opengl shapes.
When I click Edit, AE waits till I change for example the color of the shapes.
After applying the changes I use the following commands in UserChangedParam to force render in AE:
params[slider_rerender_id]->u.sd.value += 1;
params[slider_rerender_id]->uu.change_flags |= PF_ChangeFlag_CHANGED_VALUE;
params[slider_rerender_id]->uu.change_flags |= PF_OutFlag_FORCE_RERENDER;
For this I use this reRender slider:
After these lines of code, AE increments reRender slider's value but nothing changes in the scene. I have to change parameter manually to force render...
Is there any way to force render in AE? I know that AE remembers frames but in that situation I want AE to force render every time I change something in opengl.
2. I don't know why opengl commands tend to crash Premiere. In AE opengl works ok, but in Premiere it crashes or even hangs my Mac every time I load my plugin. Is there any solution for that?
3. Is there a way to put an uneditable/hidden text field within the plugin? I know that there's nothing like textfield parameter. How can I create my textfield parameter or save my text in some of the available parameters?
Thanks for your answer!
Dave

After Effects OpenGL error on a Satellite A200-1M7
I am engaged in video development. Earlier I worked on an old computer (1.7Mhz, 256RAM, 64mb video).
I work in program Adobe After Effect, but today at work on Toshiba satellite A200-1m7
(It is very powerful computer Core 2 duo 1.8Mhz, 1024Ram 256mb Video), the program
gives out a mistake: After Effects error: OpenGL: Failed to share context - monitor color depth must be 32. (5044::0)
what is that means and as it can be corrected. Thanks!Hi,
I am not sure if it helps but try the following:
Right-click somewhere in your desktop (the contextmenu opens), then click on "properties" and go to the tab "settings" where you can set the depth of the "Color Quality". Set it to the highest (32 Bit) and check if the error appears again.
It would be good if you give a short reply if it worked..

OpenGL, nVidia 8600M GT 128mb and After Effects CS3 8.0.2
I've just sold my one year old macbook and bought a new (not so new now, revision C), 2.2 ghz nVidia 128 mb macbook pro.
I did that cause I work with After Effects and thought a bigger screen and dedicated graphics with OpenGL would improve my performance. Sure it did, mainly because I jumped from 1g RAM to 2g in the new computer.
But I'm experiencing a irritating bug that makes AE crash. I've searched in forums, adobe website itself, upgrade to 8.0.1, 8.0.2, made the Nvidia update via Software Update from Apple, and the problems keeps going.
It is mentioned in this document from Adobe: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/view...2244&sliceId=1
"After Effects error: AE_OpenGL: Create texture error. (5065 :: 0)"
In the solutions proposed in the document it says: "Disable OpenGL", "remove OpenGL plugin" and "Optimize the Texture Memory preference", among other things.
Disabling OpenGL wouldn't make my new graphic card useless in this case ? In the document, Adobe says I wouldn't have problems setting the Texture Memory preference because OSX makes it automatically. But at the same time says that the ideal should be 80% from my memory. If I have 128, 80% is 102.4, right ? My config is set to 114. Have OSX failed calculating ?
Thanks, and sorry for the long thread.There is a lot of conflicting and/or otherwise terrible info being posted as workarounds to getting the ae cs3 801 and 802 update to actually install. I have read everything from reinstalling the entire creative suite, to writing a custom script that disables the app running list in the config.xml. Hahaha what?! Tech support seems to need a week off...
Ok here's how to get it to install:
#1: go here and delete everything in it--> **user>appdata>local>temp>patcher** (this is in Vista...xp users will get there via c:\docs and settings...)
#2: install the update (it will fail
#3: go to **user>appdata>local>temp>patcher** again and you will see 2 new folders named PATCHER[some number here; ex: Patcher470]. Look in these for a folder named INSTALLER. Once you find it, double click on:
PatcherApplication
Voila- ae cs3 will now update to 8.0.2.
It's as easy as that. -
I've just installed After Effects CS6 from the cloud. I run Photoshop, & Illustrator CS5.5 with no problems.
Here are the full errors it gives me on startup. I have never been able to successfully get After Effects to load.
"After Effects error: After Effects crashed previously attempting to initialize OpenGL. Consult the manufacturer of your graphics card for a compatiable OpenGL driver."
"After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was: <6632> <GPUManager> <2> Sniffer Result Code: 1"
I have an ATI Radeon 7850 card. Tried uninstalling the drivers completely and re-installing latest Catalyst drivers. Then tried uninstalling completely again and installing the beta 13.3 drivers. Still same crash error.
Running Windows 7 64 bit.

Also, Noel Carboni over at the PS forum might have to say a word or two on the drivers... He recommends to not use 13.3 at all and his list of "safe" versions only includes 12.8... You also have an awful lot of CoDecs in your list, so you might consider uninstalling some of them/ the apps that introduced them. This may also help....

After Effects Warning: A problem occurred when processing OpenGL commands
Hi There Fellow Adobe After Effects Users.
Please could some one help assist me with the following error i am getting.
I bought a template and needed to do a logo animation reveal. It was done using After Effects CC for PC.
AE had to then convert it to Mac which did so successfully. I was able to modify, add my logo and render out.
The following day i opened the file again and it gave me the follwoing error:
"After Effects Warning: A problem occurred when processing OpenGL commands"
What is confusing to me is that this issue would normally appear if my graphics cards did not support OpenGL, and it would not have opened in the first place if it was not supported.
My graphics card is a - ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB - running Mavericks OS. So i know that this card does support GPU acceleration.
Please could someone point me in a direction that will fix this.
Thank you so muchThank you for the update Mylenium.
If I look at my display info, the card says OpenGL engine. Does this mean anything?
If it's not supported, then what's the point in purchasing a Mac If you cannot use AE's full capacity. Mac doesn't put Nvidia cards in there machines and on the Adobe website, ATI cards ate not listed; but in the same breath it says that most ATI cards that have come out in the past 5 years are supported. Surely Adobe and their technicians must have spoken with Mac technitions.
I am considering to buy the new Mac Pro; but am definitely going to change my mind if I cannot use AE's full compatibility. I don't see why spend so much cash if the cards aren't great.
Please could you then tell me what functions to switch off in the project file. I'll get the guy whom I bought the template from to switch of those functions.
Thank you.
Have a great day -
OpenGL crash error when opening after effects
When I try to load up After Effects it crashes and says "After effects crashed previously attempting to initialize OpenGL". I have updated my graphics card drivers etc. What do I do
This should help you guys hopefully. I am using the After effects cs6 and it crashes on startup with the error "After effects crahses previously attempting to initialize OpenGL. Consult the manufacturer of your graphics card for a compatible OpenGL driver". I have been using the same GPU for ages now and this has never happened.

Adobe After Effects CC showing incorrect OpenGL version on New Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013
Hey Guys, Quick question here. I'm attempting to work on a project on After effects. I keep getting Out of Memory error upon loading the project. i went in and tweaked the settings and i noticed on my GPU page, it says my OpenGL version is 2.1. On Apple's website it says the OpenGL version of My Macbook (Late 2013 15" Retina, Geforce 750M 2048MB) is 4.1
Any reason why it shows the incorrect version? i dont think the OpenGL is whats causing my Out of Memory error, but i just want to make sure im not over looking anything in attempt to resolve the issue.
Thanks!

After Effects CC - Won't open due to OpenGL crash.
I can't for the life of me get After Effects to work. It crashes when I try to start it. Premiere Pro works, |'ve tried restarting and reinstalling to no avail. I've also tried running CS6 but that also crashes. There's no way to disable OpenGL in CS6-CC.
I'm desperate for some suggestions on how to make this work.

Gateway computer not able to activate opengl in after effects?
i got a gateway computer (bad, bad idea..) and it came with an "ATI Radion HD 4650" with 1GB of VRAM, an AMD Phenom quad 9750, 8GB of DDR2 RAM, yet after effects won't let me use my card to render in opengl, i have the latest opengl drivers, and the latest drivers gateway has published (the normal drivers can't finish installing because of something im sure gateway is behind), on PS it wouldnt allow it either, but i did the registry hack, and it runs fine on there now, but i kinda want it for after effects so i can do a faster render than 10 minutes for 10 seconds of preview
but it should be a one-time render, then just composites, right?
Sure, AE will only read the frame from the source file once, but if the comp is used 30 times, 30 individual comp buffers need to be calculated, possibly involving complex blending operations with other layers or the footage itself if used as nested comp. Furthermore, since you mention 100fps, there may be temporal operations involved when time-stretching/ time-remapping, resulting in look-up of multiple source frames per any single comp frame which for all intents and purposes can take a while, especially with compressed sources that require to decode larger parts since they are GOP based. Could be perfectly normal, if you ask me, but there may be room to improve performance by checking your comps and optimizing things here and there.

OpenGL 3.0 in After Effects
Is it worth trying to get OpenGL 3.0 in After Effects? My card is the GTX 780 that supports OpenGL 4.3. But After Effects shows me at 2.1.2 version.
I've read many threads that say OpenGL in After Effects is worthless. These threads were a few years old and I was wondering if it still holds true.
Plus, if users are getting OpenGL 3.0, how? Of course I have the latest updates for the software, drivers, cuda, etc...
If I understand what Ive read, OpenGL will not do anything for rendering, but I thought it would help out in the Fast Preview area.Dave is half correct.
We did throw away our old, terrible OpenGL renderer several versions ago.
But we also do still use OpenGL in various places where it makes sense, as described here:
GPU (CUDA, OpenGL) features in After Effects
The reason that After Effects shows OpenGL 2 in the GPU information box is because that is the version that is being used for these features. When the application starts, it tells the OpenGL system what level of features it needs. We're not using any of the more advanced features of OpenGL 3 and later yet. -
How to disable openGL in after effects cs6?
I have posted a previous discussion, but I don't know why, no one is answering me and it's really annoying. Please, please, please, I can't wait anymore, tell me how to disable openGL in after effects cs6
windows 7 SP1 64 bit, ati radeon 5570, 6 Go ram, 4 core processor 2.8 GHz, creative x fi sound blaster.This is the other discussion: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4518765#4518765
I've tried to lower the quality, and with pure magic, it now works, even when I put highest quality. I don't understand what happened. I asked you how to disable openGL because they told me to in the last discussion. So, thank you for repairing my problem (I think you repaired it, i'll make tests to see). Just in case, could you verify if it's posible to disable openGL like the other person told me? -
Hi Everyone,
After upgrading to CC, I now have no RAM preview. When I want to preview, I hit the 0 key on the numbers keyboard, the green line builds along the comp, then it only plays on my external monitor. The Comp window just freezes on the frame the Time Indicator is sitting, and the bounding box,(action safe lines etc) flickers like crazy. I have a HP x820, with an Nvidia Maximus set-up, Quadro 6000 + Tesla C2075 with 64 gig ram. I thought it might be an nvidia driver problem, so I checked and downloaded the latest driver package (320).
After I installed it, After Effects still wouldn't play. I thought it looked like a possible OpenGL problem, so checked the nvidia website, and the latest OpenGL driver for my card is version 4.1. But in the GPU Info box in the preferences, it tells me OPenGL driver version is 3.0.0. I contacted Nvidia support, who told me that the OpenGL driver should be automatically updated with the new driver package, and it must be a problem with the application. How can I get Open GL to use the latest driver? How can I get my RAM preview to work again? Can any adobe experts here help?
Thanks
Simon.Yeah, that was me with the blackmagic card...
I have got it sorted out. I needed to check the "Mirror in Computer Monitor" in the video preview sttings for the black magic card.
Now all is good with the world again. Or would be, if I could get the External Monitor working with premiere CC... -
After Effects Crashes and Can't Find My OpenGL Card?
I have After Effects CS5 (latest version) and it crashes whenever I try to add the "Knoll Light Factory" effect into my composition. Sometimes it will let me add the effect only to crash after I move or mask the layer. It tells me: , , and
when it crashes. This didn't happen about a month ago. Anyways, after looking at some websites online, I tried to disable/enable OpenGL in the preferences window. When I clicked on "OpenGL info", it tells me that I don't have a compatible OpenGL video card. I know this isn't true because I remember turning off OpenGL a month or 2 ago. Does anyone know what I can do? Please help.Make sure that you have the most recent version of Knoll Light Fatory.
If this plug-in is causing After Effects to crash, then contact Red Giant Support for help with their problematic software.
Regarding OpenGL, go through the troubleshooting steps here:

But note that you aren't missing musch if you don't use OpenGL in After Effects. -
After Effect warning: A problem occurred when processing OpenGL commands
I have After Effects CS6 in a computer where also CS5.5 is installed. 64bit windows 7 Ultimate 20GB memory and two AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series Display adapters with drivers updated an hour ago (Driver date 27.7.2012, version 8.982.0.0).
When trying to use After Ecffects, I get error message "After Effect warning: A problem occurred when processing OpenGL commands" immediately when clicking Composition window.
What could be done?Not much, I'm afraid. You probably need an older graphics driver. Other than that you could always disable the second card or play with the configuration. Unfortunately some not so smart person decided that CS6 would no longer need manual OpenGL control for the user, so there's no way to suppress it from within the program to force-revert to software-only modes in case of such issues...

Hi!
After a ram preview the software warns me about an error with OpenGL commands.
When I press "Ok" After Effects become unusable
I've already read about this issue with Adobe After Effects CS4 / CS5 / CS6 but I can't find a discussion about Adobe CC…
Sorry my bad english, I really hope that you can help me!
I'm working on a Macbook Pro 2.9GHZ Intel Core i7 (8GB Ram)> After a ram preview the software warns me about an error with OpenGL commands.
Am I correct in my guess that you are using a third-party plug-in that uses OpenGL, like Element 3D?
